I think that there should be something similar to the VDR (sp?) except with characters instead of vehicles, allowing people to make up their own special characters. Or perhaps there should be some other way to add special abilities to their leaders.

Make up an ability and fairly attribute it a points cost to add to the overall total.

How does that sound?

Not nearly complicated enough?

After all, the value of an attribute can't really be determined individually - just as a ranged weapon is worth more or less based on BS, and value of an extra Attack would be determined by WS and S, and the whole kit and kaboodle would be marked up or down by the model's Init.

So, y'know... math. crying

"They're not in my Codex, but I heard that there'll be a new model and rules for him in the Dark Angel Codex."

They sure as hell aren't in the new dark angels codex (I just read it), but he IS mentioned. So, with any luck he'll return rules-wise in the new chaos codex that's coming out.

He is in a white darf I have... not sure which one I think 181 or 281... not sure but he can shoot both

There's always the Hero Creation rules. Do a search online. They were used for a GW mini-campaign before Medusa V. I'm not at home right now, but I can put them up for everyone when I get home, since I've got a nice, cleaned up version. The options were limited, but it had the desired effect.

The main problem with a complex VDR type system is that the same upgrade for two different armies can be worth wildly different points. Upgrading Tau to have better Initiative isn't the same as upgrading Necrons in the same way.

Yes, but that magazines information/rules is since out of print-- they are on magazine 300+ and all the rules from around the time that rules for cypher are no longer valid nowadays.

The only thing I found on it was at Games Workshop's site, and it was a contest like event for people to create the rules and model for their own hero and the winner of each store was able to use that model for a few months or so. The employees came up with the point cost. sad

I figure that once I get to that point I'll just add some to their statistics and point cost, then ask for my opponents consent before I use them.

Took me a while, but here we go. The Hero Creation Rules are up for download. These didn't see much circulation and they aren't entirely balanced, but they're interesting. I've even done you guys the favor of cleaning up the file for you; it was a real mess when I first got it.

Rockin'. I looked all over for 'em to no avail.

Tau have the worst special characters as they have so many flaws...
But Farsight would have to be my favourite...

I Like Sammael - Master Of The Ravenwing the best probably, mainly cause Ravenwing armies kick major a**, and they don't take no s**t! If There's a Fallen around then they'll get that! Screw the battle! And plus he can ride the only known Imperium Jetbike!

Secondly would have to be (And i know he's not really a special character, but i wish he was) Gregor Eisenhorn... come on he would rule all as a special character!!!

personally, i like the models and the background, but they seem to me like the creators charecters, i can't see ways in which to make them my own, which is something very important to me in the hobby.

Agreed, Id rather just take the standard HQ option, and make them my own individual thing through wargear options, modeling and painting. Though I do own me a Xavier, as I think itd be odd not to own the only special character the Salamanders have, even if I never use him.

Recently, I've come to an understanding with special characters. For a long, long time, I hated them to no end. Why would this guy show up in your army - much less both your army AND this other one... A thread on Warseer really helped me to come to terms with the possibilities, though. For a guy who is a modeler first and a player second, I was really missing out on some phenomenal possibilities.

The trick is to treat them as just an exceptional unit. Want to field Nazdreg for his sweet, sweet army composition alterations? Build your own model to WYSIWYG, paint him and your Bad Moons yellow, call him Flash Cyboss Dregnaz Tingubbinz, and voila: you get to use a special character for the extra flavor they bring to your army list - but you got the pick the flavor yourself instead of taking what was handed to you!

I'm particularly fond of characters that AREN'T HQ choices this way.

Unfortunately, a lot of people seem to have trouble understanding the "this represents" idea, (I believe it was you who said people claimed your winged marines were not representative of demonic flight). So considering people being unable to comprehend that for base models, theyd probably flip over special characters. At the same time though I hadnt thought of that, and Im going to have to read some of my codicies and see what I can abuse. Especially the new eldar one.

interestingly, new codex biggrin A endorses policy of "count as" with special characters for DA successor chapters... so you can have e.g. "Azirafal, master of Librarians of Angels of Vengeance" counting as Ezekiel...
