Her family isn't rich, so, like Haruhi, she got into the school because of her fairly high intelligence on a scholarship.

Mizuki is the only child of her parents, Daniel and Kimako Amane. She is half American, from her father, and half Japanese, from her mother (Daniel took Kimako's last name instead of the other way). Both her parents are still married and currently have no ideas of having another child. Both parents work late into the evening or night, so they are rarely home when she is.

Being his only child, Daniel still looks at Mizuki as his 'little girl' and sees her more as a seven year old than the sixteen year old she is. He believes she should be more interested in her studies than boys, and rejects any ideas of her getting a boyfriend. When he gets extremely angry he gets abusive and one several accounts had physically abused both Mizuki and Kimako. Upon cooling down from his anger he claims that he doesn't recall hitting either of the females. Kimako has tried several times to get him into Anger Management, but the idea only enrages him. Despite the abuse, Kimako refuses to get a divorce because she still loves him, knows he doesn't mean to hurt them, and feels that it would in the long run, hurt Mizuki more than help her. The abuse does leave Mizuki with a lot of bruises and cuts, but when asks, she usually lies about how she got them, so very few, to no people know of what goes on in her household.

Kimako, on the other hand, completely supports her daughter in her choices and tries to help her as much as she can. Unfortunately , Kimako spends more time at work than at home, so Mizuki sees her mother less than her father.

Mizuki loves both parents, but because she sees them very rarely, she had a distant relationship with them and is more of an independent person because of it. This is why she is keeps to herself and has very few friends. At home, she pretty much supports herself, for if she didn't clean the house, wash her clothes, feed herself, no one else would. Multiple times, she attempted to run away from home because her mother was out of the city or the county due to business and she was home alone with her father who abused her several times worse since her mother was gone, but she had nowhere to run to so she ended up returning home.

When Mizuki was very young, about the age of two or three, she showed signs of being depressed and she was officially said to be depressed. No one is sure why she developed this disorder. The disorder is so bad that she's been to several therapists and had to take anti-depressants.

Personality:
Her personality seems to contradict itself. She is both loud and shy, smart and stupid (but only when she's with her friends), nice but has an inner evil, mature but still childish. She also has very little or low self esteem, and despite her cheerful nature most of the time she suffers from depression. And despite the fact that she is intelligent, at times she lacks common sense.
Anything else?:
-She despises the ugly bright yellow female uniform, so she wears the male uniform instead.
-She wears glasses, but now she usually wears contacts.
-It may take her a minute, but she does have crocodile tears.
-Her her host of choice is Kaoru
-Her reason for attending Ouran is because her father wants her to obtain a high paying job and marry into a rich family for future benefits
