Chapter 3-...I hate you.

It took about ten minutes, but Rai finally stirred and opened his eyes. Hovering over him were two faces, one he knew, and one he didn't.
"I'm fine, Mina." the boy said on instinct.
"Are you sure?" the cat-girl asked nervously.
"I just blacked out for a bit." Rai said, stretching his arms as he sat up. He then looked at the other face. "So who are you?"
"Um... My name's Artemis." the girl from last chapter said. "I heard that you had fallen unconscious, and I was a bit worried."
"...Oh." Rai said, jumping off the bed. "You're not related to me, are you?"
"No." Artemis said, blinking. "Why?"
"Nothing." Rai replied, sighing. "How long was I out?"
"About ten or eleven minutes." Mina said, bounding over to Rai. "Are you sure you should be up already?"
"Yes, I'm sure." Rai replied. "I just need to talk to my mom about something."
"Oh... Okay..." Mina muttered, following Rai out of the room. After a moment's uncertainty, Artemis followed.

Downstairs, Rai quickly found his mother.
"No." The boy said promptly.
"Oh, you're up!! What do you mean, 'no'?" Rai's mother asked, frowning.
"No, I'm not agreeing to it." Rai stated flatly. "I refuse to allow you to decide my fate."
"It is not your choice to make. This is traditional, boy, and you have no say in the matter. Have you found somebody else, perhaps?" Rai's mom asked, frowning.
"Well... No... But that's not the point." Rai countered. "I am not marrying her, whoever she is." The boy said that with a very fierce glare at his mother, implying in a very thinly concealed way that he was determined to have his way, and would not let his mother decide otherwise. So, naturally, she did.
"Listen, Rai. There are a grand total of about five girls it is proper for you to wed upon coming of age. We picked the one that would be best for you, understand? You should be thanking me, not arguing with me." the boy's mother replied. "She's here in this house right now, as a guest, so you had best watch your tongue."
"Does she know?" Rai asked bluntly.
"No." Rai's mother replied. "We're announcing it later officially."
"...I hate you." Rai said, turning around. Mina walked sadly next to him, feeling sad for both him and herself. By now, she had admitted to herself that she'd been hoping to have a shot at winning Rai's heart.
"You need to stay down here, Rai." the boy's mom said, her left eye twitching. "The announcement requires you to be present."
"Does that mean if I'm not present you can't announce it?" Rai asked, trying to find a loophole.
"No, it means we go get you by any means necessary." Rai's mom replied, seeing right through Rai's plan.
"Dangit." the boy muttered, heading to one of the couches. He flopped down on it in an angry way, but relaxed as Mina curled up next to him. There was just something about her that made him feel better, and the boy was working hard to try and place it. So far, no luck.

Several minutes later, the lights dimmed as Rai's father stood up in front of everybody.
"Your attention, please!" he called. People quieted down very, very quickly. "It has long been the tradition of the Noble Houses to arrange marriages. And I have no intention of breaking that tradition. So tonight, I would like to officially announce the engagement of my own son Rai Aquarius to Artemis Helio." Several lights flashed as newscasters took their pictures. Exactly what they were doing in the house, nobody was sure, but they were the news, so nobody argued. Besides, this was sort of a big event. "You two, up here, please! Come on!" Wearing a look that suggested he might destroy something irreplacable, Rai walked up to his father and faced Artemis, who got there about two seconds after he did.
"Just so you know, I hate this." Rai said quietly.
"Do... You hate me, too?" Artemis asked.
"Take a guess." Rai replied, leaving it up to the girl to decide whether that was a 'Yes' or a 'No'. His tone didn't side with either.
"May these two have long and happy lives together." Rai's father finished. He then leaned down to his son and whispered something.
"No. No no no no no." Rai replied, going into his 'stubborn' mindset. "No. I'm not doing it. No way. Nuh-uh. Not happening. End of story. No."
"Why not?" the boy's father asked.
"Because it's mushy, I don't know her, and I don't want to do it. My answer is no." Rai told his father. "Try again in four years or something." There was some laughter among the spectators at this, while Mina watched worridly.
"Just. Do. It." Rai's father said. "On the cheek if you must. Or I'll boot that feline girl out of the house."
"...That is just plain DIRTY." Rai said, glaring at his father as he pecked Artemis on the cheek. "Happy?"
"Very." Rai's dad said, grinning. Rai gave his dad a dirty look and headed to his room, jumping onto the bed in a grumpy way. Mina came in a minute later, and closed the door softly.
"Are you okay?" the cat-girl asked, jumping onto her beanbag chair.
"I'll be fine." Rai muttered. "I just wanted to be able to choose my own wife."
"Well, at least you'll be able to get to know her before you have to marry her." Mina said sadly, flicking her tail around. This sentence sparked a small degree of curiosity in Rai.
"What do you mean?" he asked, staring at Mina.
"I heard your mom say something about Artemis staying here." Mina replied moodily. "But I hope we can all be friends, or we'll probably just be miserable."
"Mmm..." Rai replied. "I guess I'll give her a chance, then..." A moment later, his computer beeped, signaling the arrival of new mail. Sighing, Rai went and opened it, and quickly read the contents. "Dang, he's good." the boy muttered.
"What?" Mina asked, her ears perking up. "Is it from Tor?"
"Yeah." Rai said, sighing. "The newscasters are already broadcasting, apparently. 'Rai. I JUST saw it on the news. I can't believe it!! You are so lucky!!! That girl Artemis is freaking hot!!! And you're living with Mina, too. I'm jealous now. You had just better be faithful to your commitment to Artemis, got it? Tor.'" Rai quickly typed out a response and sent it, then returned to the bed. "Tor's an idiot. I know I have responsibilities and all."
"Oh..." Mina said quietly. She pulled her beanbag chair, her pillow, and her blankets over to the bed, so she was right next to Rai. "I hope it won't be as bad later as it seems like right now. I like it when you're happy a lot more."
"Thanks." Rai said, petting Mina. The girl purred and let Rai massage her head.
"Um... Can I ask you something?" Mina asked.
"You just did. But go ahead." Rai replied, grinning fondly.
"...Why are there newscasters inside your home?" Mina asked. The question did indeed make sense, no normal people had a small army of reporters inside their home for an announcement.
"Well... My family's one of what're called the Noble Houses." Rai explained. "There's a lot of them, and each has one vote in our government. So a marriage between two of them is an important political event, since the 2 Houses are bound to support each other because of the marriage. It's a bit complicated, but you get used to it."
"Oh." Mina said, not really understanding anything more then something about the government and voting. "It sounds like you wouldn't get much privacy, then."
"Nope." Rai replied. "Not on a night like this one. But I hope that I can go to sleep, wake up, and find that the second half of today never happened."
"What about the first half?" Mina asked, her tail swishing back and forth.
"The first half is when I met you, of course. I want that to still have happened." Rai replied. Mina smiled happily and pounced on a small toy laying on the floor.
"Got it!" Mina said. Rai laughed at this momentary taking-over by the cat side of Mina. "What's so funny?" Mina asked curiously.
"Well... It's just that you looked so funny when you did that." Rai said, attempting to stop laughing. He didn't succeed. Mina took it in good humor, leaving the toy so she could jump up onto the bed. "Thanks."
"For what?" Mina asked, confused.
"For making me laugh. I needed that." Rai said, smiling.
"Oh."

About an hour later, most of the guests were leaving, and Rai headed downstairs to see them off. Mina was downstairs, too, but she was sniffing around the pantry, looking for where the Tuna was kept.
"'Bye, Rai!" the Anime-fanatic cousins said, waving.
"See ya, squirts." Rai replied. He then handed each of the kids a picture.
"T-this... How'd you get it!?" the older one asked, staring at his. Both of them were identical copies of a snoozing Mina, who looked extremely cute in the pictures.
"She said that since you liked her so much, you should have a picture." Rai replied, shrugging. Whooping in delight, the two cousins ran off. "Heh. Lucky little kids..."
"Rai." the boy's mother said in a warning tone.
"Sorry." the boy replied, not sorry at all. He didn't understand why he should have been, after all. Such things were to be expected from weirdos like Rai.
"Another year, another reunion." Rai's dad said. "At least it's a good excuse for a break from work. The others are almost fanatical about tradition. I just remind them that we do this every year, and it's been going on for so long it pretty much IS a tradition, and not a peep of complaint afterwards!!"
"Uh-huh." Rai said, mostly ignoring his father. After the last guests who were leaving left, Rai returned to his room. Mina was still finding out the location of the Tuna.

Several minutes later, there was a knock on Rai's door.
"Come in." The boy replied from his spot on the computer's chair, which was facing away from the door. The door itself creaked open, and was shut a moment later.
"I... Uh..." Artemis began.
"Just say it." Rai advised, swiveling to face the girl.
"I just wanted to say that I'm very thankful to you, since I don't think you hate me after all. At first I thought you did, and that my time here would be horrible, but I don't think that's the case anymore." Artemis said, bowing. Rai raised an eyebrow at that and shrugged.
"No reason for me to NOT like you." Rai said. "Besides, Mina thinks we can all be friends."
"...Mina?" Artemis asked, blinking.
"The cat-girl." Rai replied.
"Me!" Mina countered, padding in. Artemis quickly turned to look at Mina.
"Y-you can talk?" Artemis asked.
"Of course I can talk!" Mina said, a bit indignantly. "I'm me!!"
"Oh. I'm sorry." Artemis said. "I... Um... Thought you were Rai's pet."
"...Understandable, I guess." Mina said, jumping onto her beanbag chair. "Cheer up, I think things will be fine for you here. They have been for me, and I only officially moved in this morning."
"True." Rai said, nodding. "Mina's a very lucky person, she wound up here instead of some research lab. Life here isn't very boring, either. Especially not when you take into account what happens when school starts. Both of you have to be enrolled, if I remember correctly."
"School? Um..." Mina began.
"Don't worry, you'll be fine. Just pretend like you'll use your claws if somebody bugs you." Rai replied. "Remember, THEY don't know that you got declawed."
"Right!" Mina said, laughing.
"Oh. Um... I guess I'll see you in the morning, then." Artemis said, leaving the room.
"Sure. 'Night, people." Rai said, grinning to himself.

Chapter 004-School

Monday morning rolled around, finally, and Rai woke up like he did every morning, by falling out of bed. Mina just twitched an ear at the thump, from her spot near the computer.
"Ugh..." Rai muttered. "Sunday was so boring. I didn't even SEE Artemis, for crying out loud. Nothing at all happened."
"Why're you up so early?" Mina asked, yawning widely.
"School." Rai replied. "You and Artemis have to come with me."
"School!? I don't need any schooling!!" Mina protested. "I'm smart as I am!!"
"And you think that sort of thing actually MATTERS to the high-ups in the government and stuff? It's the law, you have to come with me." Rai replied, shrugging. "Don't worry, I'll make sure nobody bothers you."
"Thanks." Mina muttered, yawning. She got some clean clothes and went to the bathroom to change, while Rai put on some clean clothes in the room itself. Several moments after they were finished, both went down to the breakfast table. Artemis was already there, eating.
"O-oh!" the girl said, looking up. "Um... G-good morning, Rai. Mina."
"Morning!" Mina said. "I want some tuna now."
"Again?" Rai asked, taking a can from the cupboard to toss to Mina. The catgirl easily caught it and opened it with her teeth, which were very hard and strong.
"Thank you!" Mina said, her full attention now on the Tuna. Rai watched the catgirl for several moments, then shrugged and sat down at the table, pouring himself a bowl of cereal. It didn't take him long to eat it. Rai was a very speedy eater, after all, and liked it very much.
"So, um..." Artemis began.
"Hm?" Rai asked, looking over.
"W-what's this school we're going to like?" Artemis asked curiously. The girl was secretly hoping that it was a very nice place, not full of loud, obnoxious idiots.
"Well... Most of it's full of loud, obnoxious idiots, but there's a good amount of decent people there." Rai said, thinking. "The lessons tend to be interesting, and the teachers are okay. But if I were you, I'd stay away from the jocks. They're a little... Aggressive... sometimes."
"Oh." Artemis said, nibbling on some toast.
"Girls, I got your schedules!" Rai's mom said, coming down the stairs. She handed both Mina and Artemis a piece of paper each, their schedules printed on them.
"Let's see..." Mina muttered, looking at it shrewedly. "Hmm... Doesn't look so hard. I can do it just fine."
"Can I see your schedule?" Rai asked. Mina handed it to him, and a grin tugged at the edges of Rai's mouth.
"What is it?" Mina asked.
"Your schedule... It's exactly the same as mine." Rai explained. "I would bet anything my dad pulled a few strings to get that to happen. I would bet everything I own Artemis has the same."
"Let's check." Artemis said, taking Mina's schedule. "...Yup. Identical, except for different names at the top. That's good, right?"
"Oh yeah." Rai said. "The people in my classes... Well, let's just say they've learned to leave me alone."
"How'd you do that?" Mina asked curiously.
"Well... First week of school, I got somebody else suspended when he picked a fight with me. I don't think his arm's really healed yet, but that was mostly his fault. He was charging at me, and I sidestepped, and he fell straight down the stairs. It was pretty funny, really, if you saw the look on his face." Rai said, with a look on his face suggesting that he enjoyed that memory very much. "Anyways, people left me alone after that, since almost nobody saw the fight. All they knew was that I had broken his arm without touching it."
"Was he okay?" Artemis asked.
"Of course. Except for his arm." Rai said, shrugging. "But he was the sort of guy who deserved a lot worse. You done yet, Mina?"
"Yup." Mina said, putting the spotless tuna can onto the counter.
"Good. Grab a bag and let's go." Rai said.

About ten minutes later, the kids arrived at school, pretty early. Rai quickly showed them around, taking care to point out all of their classes. More then a few of the boys they passed in the halls shot Rai a jealous look, the girlfriends they'd managed to get weren't half as good-looking as the two girls Rai was walking around with. Not to mention he was doing it with an air suggesting he actually knew them.
"Okay... And that's everywhere of importance." Rai said, looking at his watch. "Class starts in about five minutes--" 'BBBBBRRRRRIIIIINNNNNGGGGG!!!!' went the bell, "--So we should head to class now."
"Okay." Mina said, proving she had remembered the location of at least one class by leading them to it, drawing many glances, mostly at her tail. A few of the other people kept their eyes on her ears, though, which were also pretty interesting. Rai found two more desks set up by his normal single place in the back of the room. With a shrewd glance at the teacher, who Rai was SURE of by now had gotten information that his two new students were friends of Rai's, Rai sat down. Predictably enough, Artemis and Mina sat next to him, Artemis a little closer then one might consider normal. The rest of the class came in by ones and twos, many of them staring at Mina until the next person in line nudged them alone. "I'm a little nervous... So many people're staring at me..."
"You'll be fine." Rai said consolingly. "Just introduce yourself to the class when the teacher tells you to. Be bright and cheerful, try and get them to approve of you. It'll be fine."
"'Kay." Mina muttered, trying to see if she could roll up her ears by sheer force of will alone. The bell rang again a minute or so later, and the teacher promptly moved to the front of the room.
"Class, as many of you will have noticed, we have two new students joining our class. They will be with us for at least the rest of the year. I expect all of you to be very polite. Well, girls, come introduce yourselves."
"R-right." Mina aid, moving up. Artemis followed after a nudge from Rai prompted her into action.
"Well?" the teacher asked. Mina thought for several moments.
"Um... I'm Mina, and I like eating Tuna. I really hate chicken, and Anime is good to watch." Mina said. Several people started to snicker, but were silenced by those sitting next to them.
"My name's Artemis." Artemis said, nervous."And, um... That's about it, I guess."
"Good enough." the teacher said, sighing. Mina and Artemis quickly sat down, and the teacher began to explain what they were learning today.

At lunch, Rai and the two girls who were now a part of his life sat down at a table towards the entrance of the room. And it's not like their lunch was completely peaceful. Not by far.
"And so yesterday I was playing something Rai calls an RPG, and I found a character who looked sort of like me." Mina was saying. "It was a little shocking at first."
"Mmm..." Artemis said, quietly munching on her sandwich. The girl swallowed a moment later. If I saw a character who looked like me in a game, I'd probably freak out."
"Hey." another boy said, standing behind Artemis. The girl quickly turned to look at him. "I'm--"
"Tak, head of the basketball team, the football team, the baseball team, the men's volleyball team, the breakdancing club, and under the impression I'm going to get this girl to go out with me." Rai finished, earning a laugh from Mina.
"Rai, shut up!" Tak said fiercely. "You've never had a girlfriend, so you're not one to talk!"
"I don't need one." Rai replied, shrugging. "Haven't you read the newspaper recently? Oh, wait. I forgot... You can't read. Tsk tsk, such a shame."
"Shut up already!" Tak snapped at Rai. "Anyways, girl... You're new here, right? Rai may be important in the government, but he's got no real life. I'd be glad to introduce you to people who are REAL people."
"Um... T-that's all right." Artemis said. "You don't need to bother."
"Oh, it's no problem." Tak said, while Rai looked on in annoyance.
"Hey, Mina." he whispered to the girl.
"Hm?" the catgirl asked.
"Here's a prime chance to show that you aren't to be messed with." Rai said. Mina understood that as Rai's way of asking her to drive off Tak, and get her some practice.
"Okay." the girl whispered back. She tapped Tak on the shoulder.
"What?" Tak asked, without turning around.
"I want you to leave my friend alone. My claws are really sharp, and I've been itching for a chance to use them. So scram before I hurt you." Mina said, glaring at Tak. The sports enthusiast looked at Mina, eyeing the spots on her hands where the claws would supposedly pop out. "They're an inch and a half long." Mina said, smiling evilly. Tak took the hint and left. "How was I?"
"Excellent." Artemis said. "I-I'm not so good with dealing with people like him. Thanks."
"No problem." Mina said, grinning. Rai chuckled and proceeded with eating his lunch. A thought occured to him while he was eating, which was wondering why people hadn't been crowding Mina. The answer provided itself a moment later in the form of a teacher saying that he and the other teachers had been instructed to tell their classes to not bother Mina. Rai was very thankful for this, and suspected Mina was far more so.
"So, what did you think of the classes so far?" Rai asked the two girls.
"Geometry was kind of easy, Health was boring, Info Tech was interesting, and Science was out of control." Mina said.
"Yeah... What do we have after lunch?" Artemis asked, not remembering.
"Well... That would be English 1 and then Tech Theatre. Then we get to go home." Rai said.
"Er... What is Tech Theatre anyways?" Mina asked.
"We paint the sets for plays and stuff. It's a very easy class." Rai said. "That's why you don't want to wear especially formal stuff on school days."
"Oh." Mina said. "Makes sense, I guess."
"Yeah." Rai said. "It's a fun class."

Some time later, school ended for the day, and the three kids were on their way home, chatting animatedly. Even Artemis, who was obviously a pretty shy girl, was talking a bit openly.
"Hmm..." Rai muttered, rounding the bend towards his admittedly large house. "So, what now?"
"We can eat Tuna." Mina said, sniffing the air. "Fish!!" With that, the girl was off like a bullet, streaking towards the house.
"Um... Rai?" Artemis asked, watching Mina jump onto the porch.
"Yeah?" the boy asked.
"I.. Um... D-do you like her more then me?" Artemis asked.
"Nah, you're equal." Rai said, shrugging.

Several minutes later, the two entered the house, and found Mina devouring a large bowl of Tuna that somebody had made, obviously for her.
"There's got to be five cans in there." Rai said, looking at the bowl, then the counter. "...Wow."
"I'm hungry." Mina replied, her face in the bowl.
"...Obviously." Rai said, staring at aforementioned bowl.
"I guess... I'll go read now." Artemis said. She gave Rai a quick hug and dashed away. Mina didn't even notice. Fish was, after all, a whole lot more important. After a great amount of eating, Mina pronounced herself satisfied, put the bowl in the dishwasher, and followed Rai to their room. Rai instantly turned on his computer and checked his e-mail, finding a message from Tor, which the boy quickly opened.
"To Rai. Knowing your father, Mina has already had her first day of school. Anyways, I have some advice for her, and that's to pretend like she still has her claws if somebody bothers her. Also, I found some information. Check out this website. Tor." Ra said, clicking on a link.
"Hey, Rai, can I go play a game?" Mina asked.
"Sure." Rai replied, scanning the website.
"Thank you!" Mina said, bounding into the closet. Rai grinned, until he heard a crash from inside the closet.
"What did you do!?" Rai called.
"Something fell on me!" Mina said, coming out of the closet covered in soot.
"...Oh. Somebody must have decided to play a trick on the next person who went in there." Rai said. "You should probably wash that off."
"Okay." Mina said, heading out of the room. Rai quickly checked the rest of the closet for any other buckets or whatever, then resumed working on the computer.
