Nik's reprimand died on his lips when Dan turned to face him.
"It's hard to know witch the the nobles would be more angry at," Dan said, a smile teasing his lips, "The ruined robes or the swearing."

"Probbaly the the robes" Nik replied. Then sat down on his four-posted bed. "I can't control it anymore" He said. "Magic is starting to escape me; I don't know what to do."

"You're not alone," Dan said glumly. Dan could use magic without the rituals, but it often ended up back firing.

"I think we need to tell some one" Nik said. "Magic is exposed to be controled, not wild like this" Wild magic, He thought. It wouldn't be pretty, and quite possibly scary. He sighed audibly, and shook his head in distress.
He din't need to wave wands or recite word when doing magic, but every other Wizard besides Dan did, and, though he was he best and only friend, Danylrein was not the best at conducting magic. Nik wasn't either.
No Wizard would do the rituals unless copleatly nessisary, He thought. They're boring, complex, and...useless.

"But who would would we tell? The other students would just think we were crazy, and you know how the teachers would react if we even suggested using magic without the rituals. They'd probably chew our head off. No, not chew it off, rip it off." Dan had a particularly unpleasant memory of what had happened when he'd suggested using magic without the rituals to a teacher.

"What if we indirectly told them" Nik suggested. "Something like, um, 'Lord Callanburg, was there ever a kind of magic without rituals?', Or 'Lady Dannette, could you explain the properties of non-moving magic?' It might work"

"Well... as long as we don't imply we'd be doing it ourselves, it might just work." Dan was willing to endure a teacher's wrath if there was a chance he could learn to control his magic.

Dan paused for a moment, then said, "Let's check the library first."

Dan and Nik both sat rigid in their chairs, afraid to make the smallest peep. Right across from them was the head of the university, the High Mistress. Tapping her fingers on the desk, she finally spoke, her eyebrows snapping down. "A situation has come to my attention. Both of your were caught in the restricted section of the library. Would you care to explain your actions?"

Nik gulped. "No, thank you, High Mistress. I--we--would like if this issue was not addressed" He knew it was stupid to say something like this in this sort of situation. "Meaning no disrespect, but, High Mistress, we just suddenly found ourselves there; we wern't searching for forbidden books, but..." His voice trailed off.
"But what?" The High Mistress's voice was as cold as ice, dripping in intence dislike, or at least, Nik thought that it was.
Nik nearly shivered. Please, he wanted to beg. Don't kill me; I'm too young to die! He knew that it was agnist Wizarding laws to kill people without a reason, but that was hard to believe sitting in front of this angry woman who looked more than capable of murder.

Strangely enough, they hadn't been looking for forbidden books. One moment, they had been looking among the normal shelves when a strange humming noise began, and the next they where in the restricted section. Dan remembered them stepping on a pentagram when they had found the shelves that they needed. But why had the pentagram been there? Dan swallowed, then began shakily, "High Mistress, we really didn't mean to be there. I think we stepped on a teleportation pentagram by mistake." When Dan said this the High Mistress' eyes widened.

Nik kicked Dan under the table, then braced himself for the verbal lashing about to come. It didn't. He nearly breathed a sigh of relief. "We didn't mean to, but it just..." He struggle for the right word. "happened." He finished lamely.

The High Mistress sat there with a thoughtful expression on her face, and after a few moments she finally stood up and took something out of a drawer. It was a pair of unadorned wax candles, and she set them down in front of them. "I want you to light these candles with magic. Not with rituals, but with your mind. Dan, you do the first candle."
Dan stared a the candle with dismay. Swallowing his fears, he sent out his magic, hoping for once it wouldn't backfire.
The candle exploded with a muffled WUMP, spraying everything with bits of molten wax. But above the desk were the candle wick use to be, a tiny purple flame flickered.

Nik looked nervosly at his candle. As always, his magic strained to feel this object. Nik willed the wick to light, picturing a fire in his head. Unfortunitly, the theory didn't work, and what had prevously been a candle was ingulfed by a pillar of blue flame. Unlike other fire, it made no heat, and if he touched it, Nik suspected that it was cold.
A puddle of wax covered the High Mistress's desk. Nik would have appoligized if he could have found his tounge.

The High Mistress just sat there for a few moments. "I certainly have my work cut out for me..." she muttered, then stood up. "Get all your things together. You're both moving into my suites by tonight. You are my new apprentices."
