I have to say probably the shoulder cannons, and for people who don't call them that, they are the tubas that you carry on your shoulder like abazooka. They just look clumsy and odd.... I have to say though, that baritone is not that bad, i play that in marching band, and once you get used to it, it's really no different than any other horn...but that's just me.

I actually marched with my bass guitar for one song at my senior year homecoming game. It was...awkward, to say the least. Always having to shift how I held it when I passed people. But I made it through alright, I think. sweatdrop

I'd have to say baritone sax, because of its weight, and also a double bass drum. Zero visibility, plus it's heavy!

Not what I play; trumpet's way too easy compared to everything else (unless you're a wimp like me who can't hold their trumpet at the right angle the entire time).

Pretty much any of the battery stuff:
bass drums tip me over(the small ones especially...imagine the huge ones then!) snares hurt my ears an shoulders tenors are just plain evil, and weigh about 40 lbs...
Pit isn't that bad, except in this year's show...we need Hartmetz's cloning machine! Now where'd he put it...?

i think the shoulder propped tubas would be the hardest but also the flutes because you have to hold it up evenly with the ground.

ok, for all of you people who complain about flutes that kill your arms, or clarinets/saxs that kill are hard to manuver, stop whinning! A flute isn't bad because its light. A clarinet/sax isn't bad because its around your neck. A trumpet isn't bad because its light. A french horn isn't bad because its easy to manuver (although hard to see around, i'll give ya that). A tuba isn't all that bad because its around your neck and shoulders. All percussion is strapped onto your shoulders and you get your own style to march, so it shouldn't be that bad. If you wanna talk about bad, try a BARITONE! To march, horns down, we hold it in front of our faces. Flutes, try it before you complain. Then, in horns up, we can literally not see to our left side (we have shoulder mounted), and to move fast enough, we have to literally dent the horn. Don't complain about your arms until you march with a shoulder mounted baritone in the horns down position!

quads are actually worse than bass drums- sure basses are bigger, but the quads are heavier. so i'd say quads. that and tuba/baritone. those gotta suck to hold with the arms. and i kinda admire the flutes for keeping it up straight, but hey, if that's the worse of their problems it can't be too bad.

Baritone...it is like a big heavy trumpet....and it hurts to hold at the "above paralell" angle...(being a fish sucks...)

i would say tubas and drums...snares w/ the hooks are murder on ur shoulders and every christmas wen we practice for the parade we collapse on the ground in a pile w/ our snares still on 4 we're too tired to take em off biggrin

Elanchana I wouldn't know the hardest, but I do know that flutes are very hard to march with, even though they're not heavy and cumbersome. You have to keep a flute perpendicular to the ground in playing position, which kills your arm if it's done too long, and it's the only instrument that's held sideways, meaning that a right slide is extra hard. i totally agree!!! flutes are a pain to play sometimes especially if youre doing a right lateral slide!!!!

I'd have to say quints. They don't look it, but they weigh 75 pounds. Yes it's distributed well. But it's still all on your upper body, not to mentino having to walk around for hours on end with the extra poundage weighing you down.

Yeah, um... flute!
Every year at band camp, when we're learning slides, I have to explain to the new freshmen who play flute than yes, it's going to be a pain in the rear-end, and that yes, we have to do it that way. Especially with the right slides.
People say that we have it so easy because they're so light (it's worse with me, because I play piccolo), but just try having to hold it parallel to the ground, perpendicular to the sideline for a whole show and then see who's talking!
Just like the fact that flutes are easiest to play, because there isn't a mouthpiece to buzz against.... At least all of their air goes into the instrument! *sigh* I could go on about this for awhile...
