"Y'go' a copy wit' y'here?" Billy was liking this old man more and more the more he heard.

"Back in my duplex," Sid said. "The freebie copy they always give the writer. It's awfully beat up."

That, and he had a lot of photos and scraps stuck between the pages that he wasn't sure he wanted anyone seeing. He'd kept them like that for so long he didn't even think of taking them out before lending the copy out. He couldn't really even think of lending the copy out, for that matter.

"Maybe I'll make y'read it t'me sometime. Bu' y'gotta' be drunk an' do it dinamically. Wit' all th'voices an' sechlike."

The request to read it outloud caught Sid offguard. He looked over, and as the mental image of that hit him he laughed. "You might be on to something there..."

Billy gave a lopsided, crooked, mutated-toothed grin, chuckling again, "We coul' star' a theater. Y'doin' dramatic readin's, people givin' us crap t'be entertained... I 'tink we're ont'somet'in' here."

"Never tried writing a play before..." Sid said. Judging by his tone the idea intrigued him.

Suddenly, Billy laughed even louder, "I know th'perfect subject matter if'n y'ever wanna' try!"

"Oh yeah?" Sid scooted a little closer. "What's that?"

"Th'labs. Th'island. It's communal, an' th'community'll pay t'hear stories aboo' themselves, especially if it's makin' fun o' them insane bastards," He chuckled, shrugging out of the labcoat of his costume, letting it float wetly in the river behind him.

"You probably know more about what to write than I would," Sid said. Given he hadn't seen a collar like that on anyone else, Billy must have done something interesting to earn it. He didn't go so far as to ask. Not just yet.

"Back when I lived in LA-" he couldn't even say for certain when he had, or for how long. "I wrote columns for this freelance rag... Current affairs, random s**t, whatever, they didn't care. It just filled space. I could fall back on that, too..." He rubbed his increasingly scruffy beard. "But that would require keeping up."

He shook his head. "Play's probably better."

"Well, if y'need any inspiration sometime, do I go' stories," Billy laughed again, but felt it was time to crawl back towards his waiting rusted wheelchair.

"I'd like to hear them sometime," Sid said. He stayed seated for the moment, knowing getting up was going to be just as much of a problem as walking. He should have brought extra pills, maybe grabbed a bottle of something on his way out of the tent. He should have done a lot of things...

"Some party."

"A'least... th'cops... won'... be bustin' in on us...?" He panted, his head spinning as he clung to his chair. He still wasn't completley himself yet- and his weeks of starvation had left him weak, and he squished into a boneless pile. "Fer'... carryin'... narcotics, I mean," He giggled.

"There's that," Sid said, ever reluctant to acknowledge a bright side. Billy making it to the wheelchair was his cue to stop holding off and get back up. The rock was almost the height of a normal chair, but there was still the dread of what straightening up might do. His fears were justified by another jolt of pain. There were better, safer ways of getting around, he knew, but he'd never paid much attention to the physical therapists back home.

Pain kept his mind from possible psychos in the jungle or future painful deaths, but he was so preoccupied with it to notice that was, in a warped way, a good thing.

Billy, thankfully or not was too wrapped up in his own greivances to notice the other man's discomfort. He was tired and wanted to sleep off the remaining effects of the collar befor someone decided to turn it back on again. "Water's goin' tha' way. Which.. way was th'beach? Th'lake shoul' be.. upstream, righ'?"
