Feathers remained puffed out as Tybalt took measure of Vidya. She was nearly as tall as he was! Though he couldn't really tell much else through all the clothes she was wearing--what WAS she wearing? It looked like a bathrobe over something...something foreign. He didn't know what it was, other than a very loud orange. Somehow, it went well with the blue and white of Vidya's hair and skin, like a fire to counter all that water.

His wings lowered to settle against his back, and he smirked as she revealed that he was the first aside from her family to see her like this. Well, that was as it should be! He should know of any changes in his crew, especially if they include growing out of babyhood! His cocky grin only grew as she clarified her "soft" comment. Of course she meant soft like that--he was soft in no other way, certainly.

"I've been well, Viddy...better now, o' course. I must say 'm rather...pleased ye've grown. 'Twas gettin' a bit borin' totin' a toddler 'round, ye know? An' the faintin', could've lived without that, too. A sign that ye were about t' grow, most likely." He vaguely remembered odd things happening to him as well before he had grown, though he had never fainted. Even if he had, he wouldn't have admitted to it--it was such a girly thing to do! "I must say, ye look rather good now." A compliment, from Tybalt? She must have looked fabulous to warrant such a thing--and to him, she pretty much did.

While she watched him take measure of her, she particularily watched his expressions. Though she came off as completely oblivious, she actually enjoyed watching a lot of the subtle things in life; especially expressions. And Tybalt's cocky grin made her smile inwardly; a grin like that from him was ALWAYS a good sign!

"Thats good! I'm glad!" She gave him another smile, though her smile was a little sheepish, if not shy from the fainting comment. "I didn't mean to faint!" She quietly protested. She didn't remember actually fainting, but she remembered how hard she tried to avoid it. "I really did try not to." She stubbornly added. "But I did kinda figure it'd be boring having a baby as a first mate." But what she wouldn't tell him was that she was worried about being replaced, since it looked like she was going to be a toddler forever. She wanted to stay a pirate! It was fun.

"Kyaah...Thank you, Cap'n." She giggled softly at his compliment and raised her hands to rest her fingers against her cheekbones, a motion that made her haori sleeves cover the rest of her face. She knew how rare his compliments were; and receiving one from him, well...she'd move her hands once she felt the blush go away!

"Oh...I've never been in your backyard before!" Yay, subject change! But it was true, nonetheless. She knew his basement pretty well, but as a toddler, she didn't even know they had a backyard. Giving up trying to understand what he was drawing (she understood it had something to do with a ship, but that was about it), she ended up looking around her, peering at the trees and anything else that caught her interest. "Its very pretty out here...!"

"Aye, 'twas. An' I know ye didn' mean to," he admitted, grin falling to be replaced by seriousness. He had worried the same thing--why would he want to be captain to a crew of babies?--so this was a most welcome sight indeed. Now if only Donny and...what'shisname, Sylvester? They needed to grow too! And they needed a ship, which was part of what Tybalt had been working on. He chanced a sidelong glance at his pad of paper, unfurling a wing a little in order to hide his nudging it to the side. He didn't want to have to explain to Vidya what he was doing...not yet, anyway. It would be a surprise, should he choose to do it.

He moved to stand beside her as she turned to survey the backyard, looking it over himself with disinterest. It was vast, dotted with trees here and there and covered with lush green grass--it was fall, but no one had told it that. It would wither and die when it was damn good and ready to, screw this "seasons" crap. The yard wasn't fenced in in any way, but it was clear where the House deemed the property ended and the wilds began: the neatly-trimmed, healthy grass turned yellowish and unkempt, and the trees were larger and wilder, growing in number further back. Tybalt had never really cared before, but he supposed it did have a hint of beauty. Of course, wherever Vidya was...he gave a mental shake of his head, extending his wing to encompass his first mate.

"'S not bad, I 'spose," he replied halfheartedly. "So how's it feel t' be grown?" he asked, interested. He hadn't asked any of the other Tales his age about the difference between infancy and childhood, and Vidya's transition was new enough that he thought she would have answers. "Are ya adjustin' well?"

Naturally, Vidya didn't see him nudge the paper aside; in fact, the pad itself was long forgotten the longer she surveyed the backyard. This one reminded her a lot of her own yard, though naturally, this one was unfamilliar to her; she could navigate fairly well through the forest behind her own house, though not very far, or she'd get lost again like she had when she was younger (and she was STILL mentally thanking Nalira for being there to help her back home!). She heard Tybalt move beside her, so when he appeared suddenly into her pheripheral vision as she looked around, it didn't scare her this time. "Aw, your backyard's still green! Ours is changing a whole bunch of colours really fast; its actually very, very pretty." She idly commented, feeling the need to tell him this.

"How does it feel?" She repeated, turning her head so she could actually see him; and she sounded as if she were in deep thought. "Well.." She started, this time turning her head to look at the wing that encompassed her, giving up any self restraint to play idly with his feathers; naturally, she was very careful. She knew how it felt to get a feather pulled. Though she was supposed to be thinking how she felt to have grown, she couldn't help wondering if his feathers were as ticklish as hers. When he asked her if she were adjusting to it, well, she remembered what she was supposed to be thinking about.

"Oh! Well...I am adjusting well, I guess..." She seemed proud of this, and she should be! "Other than that...well...its kind of hard to judge where I'm going or how far down or apart steps are...I've uh...been tripping up AND falling down the stairs and stuff...walking into walls..." She gave a nervous giggle, scratching at her neck. "I was so used to navigating with only half my sight when I was smaller...I have to learn all over again now that I'm bigger." She pointed at her blind eye, confirming that it was a pain in the butt, but she'd naturally get over it. "Oh, and nothing fits me anymore...so I have to get new clothes soon." Her fingers idly ran through his feathers again, still considering how she felt.

"All and All...Its really hard, but I welcome the challenge!" She pumped a fist into the air, making sure it wasn't her left, incase she accidentally punched him. "Do you remember how you felt, when you grew?" Again, she turned her head to actually look at him. Damn being half blind!

Tybalt was not a person who cared about such things as beauty beyond the realm of jewels and other such shinies--the bounty of such that nature provided was lost on him. He didn't think he would ever understand why people would care so much about such temporary things. Flowers would wither and die and the turning of the leaves came only once a year; why not have something pretty AND permanent? Vidya was a girl, however, so it was forgiveable. His head tilted to look at her as she faced him. The beauty she had walked the fine edge of his somewhat unrefined tastes, teetering between pointless and priceless...although he didn't exactly know that's what it was yet.

His feathers ruffled instinctively as she toyed with them, the outstretched limb tensing as if it meant to withdraw. Tybalt didn't think he'd ever quite get used to people touching him, not after a long-ago encounter had spoiled him to it. He had learned then that people couldn't hurt him if they couldn't touch him, so he had gone out of his way to avoid physical contact, going so far as to lash out at those who dared to touch him uninvited. He hadn't meant to bring on Vidya's touch with his gesture, but...he found he didn't mind so much. It felt almost pleasant, and...he could trust Vidya. More than anyone else, he could trust her.

Tybalt almost didn't hear her words, so lost was he in thought. He smiled at her a bit as he listened to what she'd had to endure so far. "I'm sure ye'll get th' hang of it, sooner than later. It didn' take that much time th' first time 'round, did it?" He forgot, sometimes, about her disability. The signifigance of Vidya's blind left eye hit him then, harder than it ever had before, and his smile turned a bit grim. Some things never change...

"Thatta girl, don't let anythin' get ya down. 'Specially not somethin' ya can't help." He nodded as if in approval before reaching a red-covered hand up to brush ever-growing locks of multi-colored hair out of his face. Where was his hat? "How it felt?" Tybalt paused as he considered his answer. "It felt...awkward." It was as much of a concession to the discomfort as he would voice. He would never admit to anyone, even Vidya, that the sudden and rapid growth of his body was excruciating, far worse than any pain he had yet lived through.

Vidya's fingers paused as she noticed, by chance, that his wing tensed as if about to withdraw; it would be unfortunate to get a feather pulled if he were to suddenly retract the limb. When it became obvious he wasn't going to remove the wing, her fingers resumed playing idly with his feathers, harmlessly brushing her fingers near the tips of them; she liked the feel of feathers, she had to admit. A soft smile formed on her lips; she knew how he hated to be touched, and since he was letting her toy with his feathers...well, that meant he trusted her, right? That, to her, was definately priceless...it was nice to be trusted by someone you admired, even if you didn't agree with everything they did.

Naturally, she returned his smile. He should smile more often, she thought, it looks good on him. She fought off a giggle at this thought. "I'm really hoping its sooner, though! I'd have less bruises that way." Vidya chuckled softly, lifting her right hand to pull the bangs on the right side away from her face, tucking them between her pointed ear and her headwings. "And No, it didn't take long the first time...so I'll be alright." The last part of her sentence was added as a bit of an afterthought after noticing his smile turned grim.

She watched him quietly as he ran his hand through his hair; as a toddler, she'd started to believe that his hat was as much a part of his head like her wings were to hers, mainly because she'd only seen it off of him once, and that was only for a brief few seconds...so seeing him without his hat was a big surprise, but a pleasant one...though she couldn't quite understand why. "Awkward?" She repeated curiously, then looked down at her own hands, her slender fingers. "Mine tickled, when I actually grew...but I didn't start feeling awkward until I woke up this morning." As she wondered why his would feel awkward from the start, her gaze drifted towards his wings. Her wings would never be anywhere remotely close to being as big as his were...so maybe that was the reason his was awkward? "But I think I understand why yours would be." She mused quietly.

"Anyway!" She turned her head once more to face her Captain, giving him an eyeless smile. "Whattcha wanna do now?" Merely talking was always nice, and even through her disability, she was eager to go on some sort of adventure with him!

Tybalt sighed quietly as Vidya's sky-colored fingers toyed with his feathers. Surely this must be how housepets felt when rubbed behind the ears! Why didn't he like this again? Though his distaste of physical contact was always prominent, the event that had caused it was often buried under more important thoughts. Far be it from him to ruin a relaxing moment by thinking too much, in any case. This would be an act reserved solely for Vidya, he decided--he certainly couldn't trust anyone else this much. She knew what it was like to have feathers, and she was loyal and harmless besides, so he figured he was safe.

Putting faith in anyone, or more to the point, a girl? Tybalt had certainly come a long way; no longer was he an island of one, not as long as he could call Vidya "friend."

He was drawn out of his thoughts by Vidya's reply. "Ye best be," he mock-growled, sapphire eyes almost warm as they fixed upon her. "I've plans fer us now that ye're no longer a babe." Well, not in the toddler sense, anyway. Oh, the trouble they could get into! Their options doubled--Tybalt certainly couldn't accomplish much with a baby--and he was already contemplating their first act of piracy. Inle would kill him should he get caught, he knew that, and he also knew that Enoh and Nio wouldn't be too happy either (he didn't care about them; was he worried for Vidya's sake?) so they had to start small. Tybalt had been successfully picking pockets since he had been allowed out on his own, but he didn't think such things were neccessarily right for Vidya. Hmm, this would certainly bear more thought.

"Oi, you try bumbling 'long with these big feet, eh?" he teased gently, raising a foot. The long, talon-tipped toes flexed and curled before settling upon the deck once more. At Vidya's question his gaze turned towards the yard. What to do, what to do...oh! He had a great idea! Gently, he pulled his wing away, beckoning with a sneaky grin and a wiggling finger for her to follow him as he hopped off the deck, foregoing the stairs. "C'mon. Hope yer not afraid o' heights!"

Vidya playfully stuck out her tongue when he mock-growled at her. Captain or not, if he was gonna play like that, she had every right to retaliate! With a giggle, her tongue returned to her mouth, and she folded her arms behind her head, leaving his pretty feathers alone. "Oh yay! Plans like what?" She inquiried, her headwings perking a bit in curiousity. For some reason, going back into the basement came to mind. Now that they both were bigger, she figured it'd be easier to take on that Chupacabra! But then again...it wouldn't be as fun to go back to something they've already accomplished, with or without their Mother's help.

"No thanks, you can keep them." She teasingly replied, a playful grin on her lips again. Vidya knew that he had an idea once he retracted his wing, and once more her gaze was on him curiously. Once beckoned, she gave a gleeful gasp and jumped off of the deck herself, following after him excitedly. Oh yay, their first adventure without being toddlers! This was gonna be fun!

"Don't worry, I'm not afraid of heights!" I think, she added mentally. This was a learning experience! Giggling at the thought, she continued to trail him.

Tybalt turned his head to glance back rogueishly at her as he started walking away, towards the unseen barrier that divided the property from the wild yard behind it. "Plans like ye'll see. That knowledge'll do ye no good now; I'll tell ye when there's a need ta." Multi-colored feathers ruffled and smoothed in a rippling wave with impending excitement. He wanted to put off telling her as long as he could--he knew her good nature might very well overshadow the pirate within her, and he didn't want to risk it if he didn't have to.

"Good, 'm glad. What I've got t' show ye wouldn't be hardly as nice if ye were," he replied mysteriously. As he crossed the invisible threshold his wings folded tightly to his back. There were more trees here; many of the branches were bare at this point in the season, and he didn't want to snag a wing on any of them.

"...Okay?" Vidya blinked at his back, he was being so mysterious about this! Where could they be going that not only made him mysterious like this, but also had to do with heights? A cliff? A plane? The crow's nest of a ship? ....A ladder, at least? She squeed softly in excitement, bringing her closed fists to rest against her cheeks, a rather girlish motion.

"Nice?" She repeated. Where they were going was nice? Then again, saying 'nice' was a very vague comment. Whining a bit, she scampered forward to walk a little closer to him, figuring she'd be less likely to get lost or hurt by trees the closer she stayed to him. The girl chewed on her lip, curiousity over where they were going was about to absolutely kill her at this point!

Naked branches bobbed in a sudden gust of wind, shaking dead leaves from their perches to rain down upon them as they walked. The trees thickened into small stands before thinning as they had close to the property, and luckily, Vidya's curiosity was about to be sated.

It was neither cliff, nor plane, nor crow's nest of any ship that Tybalt was heading towards, but a huge tree that stood in a bare circle of field, as if the other trees didn't dare to come near it. It towered over the rest of the trees in the area, easily several times larger in height and width than much of anything outside of the cities. The wood looked smooth, as if the bark had been stripped, but in reality that was just the way the tree grew--one would get no splinters from this monster.

Tybalt smiled as he strode towards it, bending at its base to pick up a long length of thick, coiled rope. It was obvious from that and the various scars and scrapes in the side of the tree that he had been here before--usually he flew, but he had tied a rope to a high branch, a tool for when he needed to push himself physically. It was no easy climb with those wings of his, but it was all part of the challenge. With a smile and a flourish, he held the rope out to Vidya. "Ladies first."
PostPosted: Thu Nov 03, 2005 9:38 pm

Vidya brushed some dead leaves off of her bandana and picking some out of her hair, briefly noticing that the trees were thinning out, and eventually noticing that there weren't any trees at all.

Well...accept for that really large one in the centre.

"Oh my.." She breathed out, pausing on the edge of the clearing. Stepping back a bit, she tilted her head upwards in an attempt to fully see the height of the tree, marvelling at how even from this distance, she had no chance of that. Never before had she seen a tree this big...and it was so cool! Breathing out in wonder, she quickly shook her head and shuffled to catch up again, staring at the smooth bark and scars the tree possessed.

"Eh? Oh, thank you." When the rope was offered to her, she gave him a curious look and accepted it, before turning her gaze to the tree itself. She had to climb this monster? Oh well, no fighting it! Grasping the rope securely, she pulled herself up the rope a little bit by her arms only at first, then enlisting the help of her feet and sandals for the rest of the climb. It seemed tough for her, since she never had to climb up a tree using a rope...but she pushed on, gritting her teeth to ignore the way her arms protested this climb. She was gonna win this! A couple times her hand missed the rope, thanks to her disability, but she always managed to grasp it the second time, before she slid down.

After a while, she stopped climbing and gripped the rope tightly, glancing towards Tybalt. "All the way up?" She questioned. Vidya was at the first branch that seemed strong enough to hold a persons weight, but she also didn't know how far he wanted her to climb.

Tybalt wouldn't have even considered asking a normal girl to climb this tree, this haven of havens--but Vidya, he had learned early on, was no normal girl. What normal girl was a pirate, or blue, or...or put up with him? No, Vidya was something else. Different. She wouldn't have been his first mate otherwise, and he was confident that she could handle the climb.

Well, not completely confident. That was why he was a mere yard or so below her, to catch her should she fall. His wings flared every time it seemed she might fall. Though he knew that if he caught her, he'd fall too, there was no way he wouldn't try to prevent it. Climbing the beast was signifigantly easier for him, he realized, not just from experience, but because of the talons that dug into the tree's bark. That and he had two good eyes.

"Nah, just till ya run outta rope! Not far left now," he called up. The branch the rope was secured to would easily hold both their weights, and why shouldn't it? It was easily as thick around as one of them!
PostPosted: Thu Nov 03, 2005 10:13 pm

" 'Till I run outta rope...Okay!" She called down again, looking back up and trying to judge the distance she had left...easier said than done, naturally...but at least she tried! It wasn't long before she continued moving, and by the time she ran out of rope, she looked around for the nearest branch she could safely get on. Finding none within leg's reach, she sighed and looked up at the branch the rope was tied to...it was her only hope. Moving one hand at a time to grab that branch, she pulled herself upwards with a grunt, lifting her leg to rest on it, and to give her added leverage. Hanging there for a moment to catch her breath, she then pulled herself fully onto it, shuffling closer to the tree trunk for safety, as well as to give him room. Vidya made herself comfortable there, straddling the tree branch, both hands pressed against the bark infront of her.

Curiously she looked down to see how far she'd climbed...and in that same second, she instantly regretted it. Gasping a bit, she shot up to sit straight again, her white eyes wide. Okay, maybe she was afraid of heights! Shuddering a bit, she closed her eyes and willed herself to calm down, murmuring something along the lines of 'just don't look down' and 'you're not gonna fall! Its just a stupid test' to herself a couple times. After all, it could very well be her disability making the distance seem longer than it really was!

"Do you come up here a lot, Cap'n?" Ah yes, distracting herself was a most wonderful idea!

Tybalt felt somewhat proud that his newly-grown first mate had managed to make it all the way up the tree, but it was certainly no surprise. Her gasp was lost on him as he too levered himself onto the branch, electing to sit on it rather than straddle it--anything else would mean sitting on his tailfeathers, or at least parting them, and that was never comfortable. His wings settled tightly to his back to insure that they wouldn't disrupt his balance too much, and he nodded, smiling slightly.

"Aye, I do." The tense set to her body and widened eyes were not lost on him, and he chuckled internally. "But not fer th' thrill o' th' climb--fer th' view, instead. Look," he said, reaching out to turn her face to the side. Tybalt had learned early on that this particular spot afforded a wonderful view of Gambino's bay, and today was no exception; the sky was clear and there was no humidity to cloud the air. Instead, an uninterrupted view lay below them, full of ships and buildings made tiny by height and distance and the bay that turned into the endless sea, made into a liquid gem by the light of the sun.

Tybalt may not have had much fondness for nature's beauty, but he loved the sight of ships and the sea for what should have been obvious reasons.
