“But you are, my dear,” the sarcastic heir drawled. “Your pride is weak. You see. . . we live in the desert for a reason. It keeps us in top physical condition. Because we’re always in danger, always living on the edge, we become better hunters and scavengers, quicker, smarter, stronger, less dependant on things like water and food. This way. . . “ he grinned, “if we ever did fight with the Pridelands, we would easily win. Do you not see this? We live in a harsh environment to toughen our bodies and minds. That way, we’re the best. We are, after all, descended from the gods.” He looked absently at the slightly reddish coat of the lioness. “Maybe you are part Firekin. . .” he mused. “You do have a reddish hint in your coat. Red is a proud color, the color of fire. My name means drought. An honorable name, where I come from. Any name relating to lack of water is a blessed one in the Firekin lands. And what, may I ask, is your name? Does it mean something foolish, like flower or tree? Or even. . . rain?”

This last comment ended on a sour note. Any names relating to water were cursed in the Firekin pride. Water was, if anything, almost taboo if taken in large quantities. It was NEVER used in names. . . well, not in good names. Only in the names of those pathetic Mistweavers. The great fools. . .

"Unless either of my parents were descendents of Firekin I know I am not one. I was born and raised here in the Pridelands." She watched him with interest as he continued to ramble on about his pride. Then when he turned to names she grew intrigued.

"What is your name by the way? I am Kimondo, which means Shooting Star." She spoke proudly, her head held high. She was quite fond of her name, whether he approved of it or not, even though she hoped he would.

“Shooting Star. . . not a name of fire, but not one of dishonor. A Firekin cub could speak that name with pride.” He nodded his vague approval before she asked about his own name. “My name, as I said before, means drought. It is an ancient name, one that only the royal family has been permitted to use. . . Kiu.” He smiled as his own name was spoken, whispering out from his maw in a mocking tone, a teasing word. Kimondo. . . the rust colored lion thought to himself. It was, dare he think it, a pretty name. Kiu was instantly snapped back into reality. This lioness was effectively keeping him interested. The two were talking in a teasing way now. Almost. . . no, not that. She was a pridelander, a weakling. However, she did look vaguely Firekin. . . or was it his imagination that was playing tricks on him? The lion quickly dismissed all of these shameful thoughts, that he could speak kindly with a Pridelander, and tried to forget.

He rolled his eyes. “Both of our names are better than this dishonorable names of the Mistweavers. . . it is not the overall sound of the name that causes such a repugnance in our pride, but the meanings themselves. . . water, who needs it? And they name themselves after rain and lakes and such. . . lack of water is what makes the Firekin strong, and they HONOR it?”

Kimondo felt relieved that Kiu had approved of her names meaning. A gentle smile formed as she tilted her head slightly to the side. "Hhhmm... I must admit, I do like your name." She spoke honestly.

"I know you Firekin think of water as weak, but it is the source of life. If you didn't drink at all you would surely die, that is why the Mistweavers honor it. Without it there couldn't be life, no matter what you say."

She couldn't understand it, but she knew that she had fallen for this Firekin lion and wanted to be with him as long as she possibly could. It seemed he has also taken interest in her, but it was near impossible to tell with his arrogant talk. She could only hope he felt the same about here, even if she wasn't of the blood he keeps talking about.

Kiu was extremely scared. He was, after all, one of the Blood. He was slowly being drawn in by this lioness’s strange charms, and he knew that any relationship between them (even a friendly conversation like they were having now) was forbidden. Kiu could have nothing good to do with her. Their conversation was becoming slightly TOO friendly. The heir was slightly regretful about leaving her, but. . . he would not end up like Jua. He would not fall into the same trap that she had. What if this was a goddess in disguise to test him? Well, not likely, but it was possible. No ordinary pridelander could captivate him in the slightest. And so, he had to get out of this trap before he got in deeper. He had almost, as Kimondo had said, bitten off more than he could chew.

“I fear, Kimondo, that I must go,” he said, glancing at the sky. “Fine. You win. Don’t tell anyone.” He glared at her. “I can’t have it spreading around that you distracted me with talk. I have important things to do before the morrow. Running a kingdom is tiring work, you know. Wait no, you wouldn’t know. Neither would Mufasa, for that matter. Goodbye. . . It might have been a pleasure, had you been a member of my pride.” And with that, the lion padded off, slightly regretful that he had to leave the company of the enchanting pridelander.

Later that night, Kiu curled up to go to sleep, the thoughts of the day running through his head. As he drifted off to sleep, the last word on his lips was ‘Kimondo’. She had certainly given him a lot to think about.

Kimondo didn't really know what to say when Kiu announced he had to leave. She just watched him in silence as he spoke his goodbye and left her sitting there.

She sat there for quite a long time, Kiu's form had dissapeared upon the horizon of sand and dust when the sun was high in the sky, now the yellow ball was setting, dissapearing for the night. She rose from her spot, her kill forgotten, but not wasted. Several creatures had taken advantage of it during her time of thoughtfulness. She was about to turn to head back to the den when she made a decision, not with her head, but with her heart. She turned and headed off through the desert to find Kiu, she just hoped that this adventure wouldn't be her last.

Dusty and exhausted, Kitwana at length caught site of the oasis near the Firekin den, it's lush greenery and fresh scent intoxicating his senses. He had not had a drink since he left it in search of Jua under orders from Makadari. The thought of the King sent a shiver down his spine, the displeasure of the pride would surely not bode well for the slaves that day.
Turning his thoughts back to the cool crystal water now close enough for him to feel the cool of the shadows cast by the foliage send pleasant shockwaves through his body. He had been burning in his journey through the dunes, his pelt catching each scorching ray of the sun.

The oasis now opened before him, the green blotting out the sea of golden sand previously burned into his retinas, and in the middle lay a sparlking pool of water, to which the adolescent hastened, unravelling his parched tongue and dipping it gratefully into the opalescent depths of liquid.

Kimondo had traveled during the night into the desert land and the sun was now high in the sky. No matter where she looked everything looked the same, nothing but bright, dusty, nothingness. She sighed and sat down not sure what to do. The small amount of wind that had blown throughout the night had covered her tracks so she had no way of returning back to the pridelands, and she had no idea where the Firekin stayed in this harsh land. She was tired, but far to hot to sleep, and to top it off, she was hungry and thirsty. She hadn't come across anything that would appease her appetite nor any source of water. Since she had entered the desert she hadn't seen one blade of lush greenery, only small tufts of long yellowed grass that a few reptiles could be found hiding in.

She began to wonder why she had followed Kiu into the desert. True, she did love him, as strange as it was, but she also knew she had no chance to be with him. He had clearly stated that the blood was everything in the Firekin pride and that 'we' Pridelanders were weak. There was no way that he would be with her. She layed down on the hot sand and a few tears ran down her face. Why couldn't things be more simple than what they are?

[;B Hello all, sorry I haven't been on much, I'll try harder ><]

Taka curled her tail tighter around the young ivory cub that lay next to her. Both of them were hidden in a thin amount of tall drained green grass, sleeping peacefully until the sound of soft padding woke the young cub, Teule. Blinking his non existant white eyes the cub looked up and around. He yawned widely and poked his head through the grass, quickly pulling it back in as he made outt he form. A lion. Was it the one that had taken him up to the rocky place?

Looking worridely at Taka, he wanted to tell her, to alert her of another prescence but she was too tired, especially since she came all the way down the rocky mountain. Peeking his head you yet again, he inched out, crawling on his belly toward the lying lioness. The cub, thankfully, kept hidden within the small patches of grass on the way down the small hill on which the cheetah had placed them.

A lone pair of eyes is watching Kimondo's trek across the desert with barely-concealed irony. A black sparrowhawk is soaring delicately over the lands. Her image shimmers every now and again - supposedly from the heat. The thrice-damned Greater seem to be gaining more ground; she thought she could convince Makadari to see eye to eye, for once. But it's in vain, always in vain. Damn Finar-si for ever creating the Firekin, anyways. But perhaps...perhaps there's another way.

She's been watching the twain for awhile, following Kimondo instead of Kiu when the duo separate.

Hestia's sharp cackle rents the air, a sharp, staccato sound that would make most creatures uneasy. She pulls out of a sharp dive to land near the lioness, avian eyes glinting ruthlessly. She preens. A black sparrowhawk, her form is small, but she carries wicked talons and a ruthless beak; a small, but quite able, predatory. And perhaps something more. There's an all-too-knowing look in that gaze. "What's wrong, dear?" She croons, all innocence. "Big lass like yourself shouldnae be crying, it's a beautiful day outside." She jabs her beak towards the sun in emphasis; clearly, her idea of a 'good day' is blistering heat and humidity.

The cub was close to inching forward, right into the sight of the lioness and the hawk but was rouchly pulled back by Taka who had been awaken by the hawk's flapping. The cub would have yelped loudly in surprise had she not covered his mouth with her paw, careful not knick him with her outstretched claws.

They were too close to the two. If she moved they would be sure to hear so the best thing to do would be to wait it out. The cub gace a wide smile now that his 'mother' was with him and took a courageous step forward while Taka tried to catch him swiftly by the tail but his head was already completely visible to the two if they were lucky enough to look at that moment.

Kimondo had hidden her head between her paws to try and protect it from the scorching heat, but only managed to grow hotter from the sand beneath her. A familiar sound reached her ears, one that she heard so often that it never truly had name. Looking up, her blue eyes fell upon a black bird, a hawk to be more precise. She was a bit surprised that such a creature would land in front of her in such a manner, but she didn't mind, not being this lonely.

"I am a bit lost." She sighed as she lifted her head up some more so that she could look at the creature a bit more clearly. How this black hawk could find this weather beautiful she wasn't quite sure. In her opinion it is far too hot and dry. She would much prefer the slightly cooler and more moist enviornment of the pridelands at the moment, or at least have to endure this with Kiu at her side. The thought of Kiu made tears want to well in her eyes again but she forced them away. "Do you know your way around this desert? I must say, all these sand dunes have begun to look the same to me."

"Why, of course, my dear," Hestia drawls, tilting her head to survey the pridelander with one wicked eye. "These lands - this desert - is where I make my humble abode." She's fairly dripping with good nature and helpfulness. If only old Criggo could see her now; he'd probably have a heart attack from the shock. The hawk seems to pause, as if considering. "You look a bit down, my dear. Is anything else the matter, besides you're being so...lost?"

As soon as she shuts her mouth, she spots something out of the corner of her eye. Immediately, predatory instincts kick in, and the hawk's head darts sharply around. Gleaming black orbs fall upon the sight of a little cub in the sand. Hestia's no fool; she immediately knows who the child is. Finar-si's get! she hisses to herself, inwardly, beak tightening, claws twitching, mind racing furiously. The little rat, I'll - But she chokes off the thought as soon as it is born. No. That may mean that one of the Greater may be nearby...and she mustn't have one of them around to witness what she's about to accomplish.

[;B Hey, Dusty are our eh, Gods seperate from our caretakers? They're lions, too yes? o.o; Sorry, I'm just confused and sleepy x3]

The cub mewed softly making Taka's paw muffle the little lion's voice even more. She gritted her teeth, she was in no shape to run or fight, that mountain had torn her down a great deal and now she wasn't even in a position to sneak away. Pulling the cub inwards toward her chest, Taka continued watching, keeping her head and ears low to the ground. Teule was eager to meet these new comers and continued to try and escape, pawing his way out of his mother's grip unsuceedingly.

(Yup, they are, and yes, they're lions. smile Mau-ri is a primarily white lion with strands of black in his mane, for example. Although they can take other forms, the lion is their 'primary' form.)
