Marijuana:
I smoke it, I think it should be legal
I smoke it, I don't think it should be legal
I don't smoke it. I would try it. I think it should be legal.
I don't smoke it, I would never try it, but it should be legal
I don't smoke it, It shouldn't be legal. I'll never try it.
I've smoked it in the past, I quit, It should be legal

But why do you want so badly for it to be legal, if you don't even use it?

On a matter of principle. Just because I choose not to smoke doesn't mean others should have to do the same. That would just make for an awful world =P "I hate this movie, therefore nobody can watch it!" or "I hate brussels sprouts. They are now forbidden!"

We're supposed to live in a free country. I understand that there must be rules to protect people from hurting and killing each other, but what people do in the safety and privacy of their home should be up to them.

That is a good point. However, people have murdered and raped while they were high. So if the laws are to protect people from harming others, isn't this a good law?
More murders and rapes are comitted sober than under the influence of any particular drug. Therefor, sobriety should be illegal.

And there are more accidents involved while drunk or high, especially involving cars, and very often innocent people are killed in this way.

Haha =P Well people have murdered and raped while they were drunk too, but that's legal.

And I speak from experience being around high people and being high when I say that drugs don't make you want to murder or rape people. That's all propaganda.

Back when our grandparents were growing up they were told smoking weed would make you jump out a window. All it does is make you giggle and make you hungry.

I already drink alcohol. No going back there.

But you could quit.

I can't pass up a scotch...

Lmao! =P heart

But what if someone else enjoys a joint like you enjoy your scotch? Why should you be allowed to drink and they not be allowed to smoke?

Drinking doesn't cause cancer, but it does cause liver disease if overdone. I don't over do. Anywho, why anyone would want cancer (yes, it causes cancer) is beyond me.

Everything from cell phones to star light causes cancer. Cigarettes are a leading culprit. Marijuana, less so. It also leaves no tar behind in the lungs, and, unlike alcohol, is unable to poison you to death all in one go.

You're still inhaling smoke, whether you mean to or not.

Okay well, we're both sort of right. Burning anything and inhaling the fumes can cause cancer. But marijuana itself isn't a carcinogen. When baked into cookies or ingested through other means, it's not.

Besides, just because it causes cancer doesn't mean we shouldn't allow people to do it if they enjoy it. People enjoy tanning too but it causes skin cancer. There are tanning salons all over the place.

Yes, but tanning salons warn you of the risks. With pot, most people try to steer you from the warnings, like it's no big deal. I just don't understand how something so dangerous can be so enjoyable to people.

But you drink...

In the year 2001, 13,674 people died in alcohol-related traffic accidents in the US. (Source)

But I'm sure you don't get behind the wheel.

In the same year, 62,032 other people died of non-vehicular, alcohol-related causes. (Same source)

By those statistics, it seems like you have the answer to your own question.

Alcohol is a drug. It shares the same flaws and shortcomings of any other drug. You can't defend one and attack the others.

For so long, authorities blatantly lied to people about the dangers of drugs. They said that smoking weed would make you want to commit suicide and kill your family etc etc, when in reality the worst it does as far as affecting your personality goes is make you a little lazy. It's a natural reaction for the public to go the other way with it when they're so used to being lied to.

If pot was legal, then we would be able to teach people of the dangers in the same way we teach them of the dangers of drinking, and maybe everybody would be more aware of what's truth and what's lies. But the government can't lie to people for four decades about the stuff and then suddenly expect people to heed their warnings.

Hey, hey, hey, don't make it about right and wrong, now. I'm only acknowledging that I came into this blind. I have personal reasons for being against this stuff as well. In fact, that's probably what fuels everything I've said.

Personal feelings are bias. Bias is a flaw to be overcome. I could easily blame my father's death on drugs and alcohol, but the reality is he died because he was selfish and unstable. If he wanted to be selfish and unstable, that's his choice. If other people want to be selfish and unstable, they each make their own choices. By choosing to get by the wheel, he endangered the safety of others, and that's a morally wrong choice, but that's a second, unrelated choice that could have been avoided without forgoing the decision to use drugs. In and of themselves, drugs harm only the user. Self-inflicted harm is not something that should be controlled by the government.

I'll choose to be bias on this subject then. lol
