Anyone doing any chi training?

I would like to start chi training but I would have to wait for these Pai Lum guys to come around in order for me to start.

I've done some Tai Chi, and my wife is a Qi Gong instructor. I occasionally join her to do her form (called Dance of the Phoenix). Other than that, nothing formal, just exercises that I've already learned coupled with insights from reading and my sensei.

Can't help ya Marty, but I do have a question for myself.

For someone being as small as myself (well short, whatever) Do you think it would be good for me to cross train with Judo and Boxing? I mean, I already know Judo, but I mean get more into it...

Okay another one, which one do you think is better to learn, Judo or Wrestling? Because I was thinking about getting on the wrestling team next year, but I'm not too sure about it.

One more! sweatdrop Is a fan a good weapon to use? I've been dying to learn it and So far only played around with my rice paper fan, but is it right for someone in Tae Kwon Do?

Judo and wrestling are both great for short people. Lower centers of gravity give you and advantage. As for which to take, it's up to you. Judo is more throws and submissions. Wrestling is more about positioning and pins. I'm more of a judo fan, but I do love wrestling.

Cross-training in boxing will do nothing but HELP! Great work for striking, strength, foot-work, everything! Go for it.

The fan is a decent weapon, that is of course if you don't have your sword on you. xp The fan is usually used in Chinese fighting styles, not so much with Korean. Still, if it's fun, do it.

I don't think it's good to do boxing at all. XD I find it too limited and too physical. Try karate or jujutsu, they at least CAN blend with judo.

I would go for judo, wrestling limits itself to a mind-numbing sport. Judo, if you are lucky enough to find a good teacher, will also enrich your mind and soul.

As for the fan, it is not one of the most effective weapons. I find it beautiful myself, too, though.
It was primarily used as a clubbing weapon, because unlike weaponry, it was tolerated in court. Therefor tessenjutsu was usually limited to those people who actually needed to attend to court. After a while, counterfeits were produced that were not actual fans but really just maiming weapons that looked like one. From there on it was just a small step to replacing wood with sharp metal and paper with silk to create a weapon of fair effectiveness.

Also note that fans were often used in the battlefield to give signals (you've all seen the Last Samurai. XD)
Some of you may have noted that in this movie, one of the samurai is performing a tessen-kata. Beautiful, though no samurai would think of practicing a tessen-kata before going to the battlefield. XD

Sadly, today, tessen-jutsu has almost died out. It's usefulness on the battlefield exceeded and government buildings now having air conditioning... Only a few schools teach tessen-jutsu in the way it was originally thought. More schools exist, but many are just posers and pretenders.

Bujinkan also has a section for the tessen. The extent in wich these teachings match those of traditional, courtsy schools is however unknown to me.

Ah, cookies.

Nice bit of of showing off there Josh, ol boy. It's rare that you find people who do know about the Japanese fan arts.

Aww, thanks Marty.

Did you know, though, that the fan was also used for giving signals in Spain?
Though the battlefield on wich it was used was quite different...
Spanish women would carry fans to say things without speaking.
Fanning slowly would mean being married, fanning fast would mean being engaged.
Of course, messages such as "I love you", "I hate you", "come see me later" etc. etc. etc. also existed, but I'm no Spanish fan conoisseur. XD

That reminds me of the show the spanish conquistodors... where they were talking to each other in nothing but the signaling of the air plane flags. xd Twas wierd... alright.. enough by me.

My knowledge of the use of the fan is limited to that of blowing away a fart.

I still wanna see a brick flailing kata. Beer-bottle smashing maybe?
