((Rolling... and it's a two. Poor Diacyn))

The owl almost didn't notice that his name was being called. The raven's mouse had died. He'd felt it go, felt something change ever so slightly as the tiny life flickered out of existance. So that's what we can do.

And what a way to go! Coughing and sneezing and... excreting gooey stuff... it didn't seem pleasant, but it was certainly interesting.

"Hey, nice job!" he said happily, and honestly, to Xaxis. He had no personal vendetta against the raven, and was actually kind of glad to see the bird have some success. He'd always felt just a little sorry for the sickly, molting bird. "Now watch this," he added confidently, shooting a meaningful glance at Savius. I'm gonna kill it! Just you watch!

He picked up his mouse by the tail and placed it in the palm of his hand, staring into its beady little eyes. Okay. Time to kill this thing.

...his confidence faltered a little. What was it you were supposed to do, anyway? He didn't know anything about magic. Taylor laughed if he tried to talk about it- apparently it wasn't "scientific" enough. Iamel said he had to get angry, but as agressive as Diacyn was, he couldn't feel anger towards the mouse. Hunger, sure, but not anger.

Hm.

He stared at the mouse for a few long minutes, pondering, but slowly his mind began to quiet. He started to slip into the calm, internal silence that he sometimes felt when he was practicing karate, the calm inner void that helped shut out emotions and worries. But just a little different. A little stronger. He closed his eyes, imagining that he could feel the icy Artic cold of his habitat swirling around the mouse, shutting down its nerves, freezing the whiskers into tiny icicles-

He opened his eyes. Nothing. The mouse squeaked at him cheekily.

"DAMN!" Diacyn burst out angrily. "Dammit! You're supposed to die, you little b*****d!"

Yay for Xaxis. More than a little impressed by his friend's second attempt when it ended in death, Savius managed an actual grin and went over to squeeze the Raven's shoulder in easy affection.

His brief protectiveness of the songbird completely forgotten in the excitement of the moment, and Diacyn's glance, while confusing, was enough to keep his gaze glued to the scene before him.

A scene in which... nothing happened.

Oops.

And the owl didn't look happy about it either! But hey, Xaxis had failed the first time, so had Rascir, and the second time They'd rocked. So it wasn't really a big deal, was it?

"Do it again." He suggested from his place on the sidelines, his gaze fixed on the little mouse. He wanted to see something freeze.

Rascir watched on, feeling bad and somewhat secretly relieved that the small rodent didn't meet the explosive demise as the other one did. That was about as much gruesome as he wanted to deal with for one day. But, the empathy he felt was...

"Mister Shanuh...?" he looked up at Shanuh. "Are we all linked?"

((WTF? This is NOT fair...))

"Can it, you," Diacyn snapped at poor Rascir. This was NOT a time for philisophical musings. It was a time for freezing the asses off of tiny defenseless mice and getting it the ******** RIGHT this time. He fumed and glared at the tiny mouse, feeling as angry as he'd ever been before, but if rage powered Iamel it was certainly doing nothing for him.

Zip. Zilch. Nothing. The mouse remained as alive as ever, and infuriatingly calm. It curled in Diacyn's palm, completely naive about the fate that was going to claim it. Was supposed to be claiming it.

"Why the hell won't you die!" He squeezed the mouse in his fist, feeling the tiny claws stratch against his fingers as the panicked rodent struggled. It wouldn't die from this either, but it was no longer happy. "What's wrong with this thing? Iamel, make it blow up or something. Or tell me how to turn it into an ice cube and get it RIGHT!" Scowling, he glared at Shanuh. "This mouse is defective, dammit! You gave me a ******** immortal mouse!"

Oops. Poor Diacyn. Iamel had remained quiet for a while due to the expression he got from Xaxis when he tried to be helpful but now Diacyn was getting... rather violent. That could be potentionally bad.

Anger did nothing for his magic, that much was true.

THe woodpecker winced as his best friend began to snap at Shanuh and squeeze the mouse in his rough little fist. Iamel leaned over his chair to Diacyns to grab the owl, whispering in his ear. He didn't want to get a glare from him too but...

"If you kill the mouse, you won't have another time to practice," He hissed softly, keeping his arms around the owl in an attempt to placate him. "Shanuh wouldn't do that 'cause then we wouldn't learn. Your mouse was raised in Antartica or somethin'. Either way, you gettin' angry is just making you out of control which doesn't help the magic."

The bald skull recieved a bump with his own, "And if I blow it up, you totally owe me a giant ice cream sundae."

Rascir sighed, putting his own mouse onto his desk from off his head.

"I mean, can we help other people do it, but like.... together?"

Xaxis was still immensely pleased that he had destroyed his mouse. Killed it in one fell swoop! Okay, sure, it had taken two tries to accomplish the act but he was STILL the only student to DESTROY THE MOUSE!

Violet eyes bright with delight, the mouses corpse dangling from his fingers, the raven studied the bald headed owl. Not once, but twice the owl had trouble getting the mouse to do anything.

"Don't be so angry!" He suggested, tiltling his head curiously at the owl. His frustration was obvious and the poor mouse was going to be squeazed to death if something didn't happen soon!

Xaxis couldn't describe what it was like using magic - he only knew the feeling and the pink-banged boy could hardly describe that. A glance from Savius, to Iamel, to Shanuh to Rascir.

Do magic together? What on earth was that about? How could they do magic together when all their magics were different?? And how come Diacyn couldn't get his to work?

And when could they KILL again! He wanted to kill! He wanted to kill! It felt. . . strangely. . . nice!

Wings fluttering, the raven gave an excited hop, his anxiousness at things to come and things to be and things to happen overwhelming him.

((OOC: I'll have Shanuh answer but I fear sleep/exhaustion is overwhelming me. I don't trust myself to post his response under this mindset so . . soon! SOON! I promise. :3 ))

"Shut UP!" Diacyn snapped at Iamel, his eyes wild, as the mouse squealed in his grasp. "Just shut up! I can DO THIS!"

He glared at the mouse a third time, willing it to freeze and shatter into little razor shards of ice-solid fur. But he couldn't concentrate, couldn't get it to work, he was too angry-

He looked at his friend again, felt Iamel's arms around his shoulders and, for once, didn't flinch away. He'd yelled at Iamel. He'd actually yelled at his best friend. He couldn't do that. If he made Iamel upset then it wouldn't matter if the mouse died or not.

"Sorry," he muttered to Iamel, feeling his anger ebb away. "I didn't mean it." Now what had the woodpecker said? Anger wasn't going to work, obviously. He had to be calm, forget his emotions, just focus on the mouse and shut the rest of the world out for a minute-

And then he felt it. A faint tingling, like falling snow, but in the back of his mind-

His grip loosened, but the mouse continued to squeak for a minute, then went quiet. For a few inches around its body the air went bitterly cold. Desperately, it curled into a ball, fluffing its fur, trying to stay warm, but its motions were slow and clumsy and the tips of its toes and fingers were turning blue, then the dark ugly purple of frostbite, and the creature finally went still as its heart slowed, spasmed, shuddered to a freezing halt-

Diacyn's eyes were wide golden ovals. "I- I did it?"

Diacyns words and tone made the little woodpecker freeze up, hurt writing over his expression. He hadn't said anything stupid, like he did to Xaxis! He hadn't been mean! He was encouraging and... he got yelled at. Little wings drooped while the rest of his body stayed where it was, too shocked and upset to try to pull away.

The apology made Iamel nod, fingers loosening and body leaning back to his own desk to allow the other to work. He was still hurt but Diacyn was at least starting to concetrate, starting to--

Holy s**t, the little b***h froze.

Iamel gawked at the frozen thing in his friends hand, frozen and stiff with death, blue under its white fur. Its toes were different colors too.

This, he decided, was a very cool way to kill things.

"Yeah," The tri-haired boy grinned, faintly, "You did it. Congrats."

Shanuh had his his smile from the owl as the frustrated creature continued to fight with his abilities. Magic wasn't easy. He'd been surprised that the children were doing as well as they were. It was a good thing, really, to see them tapping in to their natural talants - it was a habit Shanuh hoped each and every one of them would become addicted to.

Some, more than others, were still a bit rusty with the magic. Some spells would be easier to accomplish than others, and some children would have an easier time learning their skills.

It would just take time and a whole hell of a lot of practice.

As Diacyn finally managed to get his skills under control, Shanuh clapped at the display. "Wonderfully done, Diacyn! It may not come easy, but if you keep practicing, you'll be sure to see results!"

He glanced from guardian to guardian, incredibly pleased by their efforts. "As you see, each of you has a special ability that no other can control. It is up to each of you as individuals to continue to practice your magic, to really get a feel of how death works." Shanuh's two-toned gaze landed gently upon Rascir.

He had an interesting take on death, and life in general, but his questions were GOOD questions.

"Death shouldn't change who you are, because death and dying is something you already were. It's another facet of your life," he reasured, hoping that ALL the children were listening, "and how much importance you put upon it is completely up to you.

"You don't have to kill if you don't want to. You don't have to come to lessons, you don't have to embrace the paths offered you. Just because you kill doesn't mean you have to become a monster from out of this world, not at all! Just know that life and death will happen whether or not you take part in it." Shanuh didn't add that their purpose was to return to the beings they once were - he didn't need to confuse the children further!

That would come with further lessons.

"As for having a link - in a way, each of you does. Do any of you remember going somewhere and knowing there was Kin around without seeing them? Or knowing that a certain Bird wasn't an average avian?

"You all are kin, you all are of the same extraordinary species. Bonds will form between each of you, and those bonds can effect your abilities. On some occassions, you will all work together and may be able to enchance each others skills.

"But ultimately, each of you are your own. Energy can rarely be shared, though it can be influenced. The more of you that work on projects together may find that death is easier to inflict. But that doesn't compare to really getting involved in your own, personal magic. You'll gain far more experience destroying a smaller creature by yourself than mutilating a whole city as a group.

Now, are there any more questions? You've all done very well, and must know that I am very, very impressed." And it was true. His words weren't patronizing in the least!

Rascir watched as Diacyn's frustration and fury changed and focused on the rodent, finally leading to its demise.

He understood what Shanuh said. It -shouldn't- change who you are, but he felt that his innocence was taken from him this day. It was bound to happen, he knew that things died all the time. He just wasn't aware that he'd have to take an active part in all of it. Part of him felt very odd, though another part of him still sung gayly as he always did.

But now he could feel himself breathing, more aware that his own eyes looked on here and now, more in tune with who was Kin and who was not. Part of him felt like his true nature was exposed and meshing with who he thought he was. He's not just a brightly colored little boy with the desire to sing and play in the light. He's not just the adopted child of a lonely, sad man living and working at the pet shop.

The others gave off auras of such unnerving violence and yet strange pangs of compassion. Perhaps it was their human elements conflicting with raw desire. His wings flexed involuntarily as thoughts raced like horses in his mind, toward what goal line he couldn't tell. He looked worried.

"I knew what everyone was before speaking to them," Iamel agreed with their teacher, tone still rather subdued. Small fingers went to the desk top, drumming slightly, wings pulled as close to his back as possible. "Especially when they were birds.. before being a Bird."

It would make no sense to anyone else BUT them. The woodpecker sighed, shifting to face plant his forehead against the desk, his voice was muffled. "What if we fail?" The childs eyes were closed and his head didn't raise to Shanuhs. He was tired and upset but it had been bugging him. "Everything happens for a reason. Like Opedius an' his eye and his mom, or the lady-witch with the pig Island or professor Xaviers legs. I dunno what we have to do or anythin', but what happens if we fail, Shanuh?"

Morbid little ********, wasn't he. Patricks cynicism was rubbing off.
PostPosted: Sun Oct 08, 2006 9:07 am

"Yeah, and you knew what I was thinking when I was a bird," Diacyn offered, just getting over the shock of his first magic kill. "But... I dunno if failing would be that bad. I mean, I did it, right? Even though I screwed up at first."

It was suprisingly optimistic for the owl, but his success had cheered him up a lot. He was still a little bitter about his earlier failures, but he wasn't going to let anyone see that. They could only see his triumphs.

But what was this about mutilating whole cities? "Are we gonna kill people? Like, lots of people?" Diacyn didn't know what he thought about that... mice and kittens were one thing, but you couldn't eat people, so what was the point? And some people were kind of nice, and even the total ******** might not deserve to die.

Oh well. He wasn't one for deep thoughts. "Mousesicle?" he asked, offering his frozen rodent to Iamel as another apology.
