The 3rd lesson is very confusing... You say first that:

Are- that over there
Kore- this

and then in the sentences you already use 'are' as 'this'...

AND in the vocabulary it says:

Kore- that over there
Are- that over there

So as you can see i got really confused on which is what... Because i would take that you wrote it wrong and:

Are is that over there

and

Kore is this

BUT the examples completely confused me....
In this instance, the beginning of "k", "s", and "a" talk about distance.

k = close to the speaker
s = close to the listener
a = far away from both the speaker and the listener

So...

kore/kono = this
sore/sono = that
are/ano = that over there

You use kore/sore/are alone, it being it's own noun.
kore wa ringo desu. = this is an apple.

You use kono/sono/ano before a noun. It is kind of describing the noun and not being the noun itself.

kono ringo wa dare no ringo desu ka? = whose apple is this apple?

Okay, about the 3rd lesson.. here is what confused me.. everything else kinda made sense, because its basic sentence structure..

kore wa tomodatchi no desu [this is my friend's]
Kono kamera wa tomodachi no desu [this camera is my friend's]

Now.. I thought Watashi was [my] or does Wa take over when there is a noun in place of watashi..

Cause if you said
Kore watashi wa tomodatchi no desu [ This is I/am my friend's]
since there is two nouns it would be Kono.. but how would you translate that.. OMG I am confusing myself..

2nd quetions:
to make sure I am getting sentence structure
Could I say:
Dore ichi wa kamera desu ka? [ Which one is the/a camera ]

I asume the particle wa can be either a/an/the?

What if I wanted to say Whose dog is this?

its obvious
Whose = dare no (yes?)
Dog = inu
is = desu
this = kore
? = ka

Would it be
Kono dare no inu desu ka?
or
Dare no kore inu desu ka?

Now.. I thought Watashi was [my] or does Wa take over when there is a noun in place of watashi..

Watashi means "I" or "me". Watashi no would be "my".

"Kore watashi wa tomodachi no desu." makes no sense whatsoever.
Are you trying to say, "This is my friend's."? If so, try: Kore wa watashi no tomodachi no desu.

Dore ga kamera desu ka? would be correct. The "ichi" is unnecessary and incorrect. You always use "ga" after a question word such as dore, doko, dare, etc.
"wa" can be 'the', 'a', 'an' etc.

Kore wa dare no inu desu ka?would be correct.

Forign languages. Tough stuff. Atleast I want to learn this one...

I just joined and apologize for my very late replies.

I'm thinking Japanese is going to be alot easier to learn than German.

just a couple questions.

g, as in ga, is pronounced like a y, right?

No, it's not; it's pronounced like the "g" in "get", "guess", and "go"; never like the g in "gym", "judge" or "Geneva".

No, it's not; you may be thinking of the w in "wo", which is (mostly) silent.

I'm not familiar with "gTranslate", but I've found the Rikaichan extension for Firefox very useful.

yeah, I got those mixed up. Thank you for helping me.

I got the Rikaichan, but it isn't working for me.

I'm glad I got that correct smile It's a good start, IMO.

You have to press to activate it. Did you download and install the dictionary as well?

I googled and found the gtranslate plugin, but it's based on interfacing to google translate, and as such, will likely give you something little better than gibberish when fed Japanese (or asked to produce Japanese.)

After downloading the files, drag them and drop them into a Firefox window to install them.
