I would love to stretch my ears, but I am worried about the holes closing up should I take them out. How far can you stretch your ears before the holes are/may be permanent?

{` K L i M || M i L K `} Does the type of jewelry you use affect it? I use acrylic because it works pretty well. I'm not allergic to anything, but sergical steel is always a good way to go. I would advice staying away from nickle. But acrylic and sergical steel are both good options. Some people use wood or stones [if you do some research you'll know what I'm talking about] But for now I suggest either the acrylic or sergical steel jewelry.

{` K L i M || M i L K `} Surgical Steel is better for newly stretched ears because acrylic jewelry is harder to sanitize as it can absorb things.

It's been explained to me that metalls are the best for fresh stretches, but only really well polished metals. Organics and plastics are porous, and can take in flesh and cause the piercing to heal strangely. Tapers are better than plugs, as they cause less tears. 1/2in is the limit to heal down for many people, but it's a body to body thing, so one might get away with more or screw up with less. One should be careful with substances that are introduced during stretching, as many soaps can just complicate the issue. Really, anything trapped between you and your jewelry is a bad idea.
That's really all I remember from Verno's lecture, and I don't follow all of it by any means. I'm probably gonna go to 00g on friday on my main lobes, and get 12g second lobes. I'm currently wearing the metal parts that hold a pencil eraser on...they make a cool 0g

A general definition of a taper is a long piece of jewelry that starts out smaller and then gradually expands to a larger gauge.
