Chibi Cherry Durza the Shade I want to learn tenor. I don't play a sax yet, though. I play clarinet, and tenor's in the same key, so it will be easy to learn; I'm probably going to play it for pep band this year. It's really hard to go from clarinet to tenor though, I tried that and it was really hard because the tenor is so much lower than the clarinet. It's easier to just go to alto sax, thats what I ended up doing. It's in a different key, but the fingerings are pretty much the same. Yeah, I heard it's difficult too, but it's still possible. One of my best friends started on tenor his freshman year, and he had been a clarinet player beforehand. Now he's a junior and the best tenor player in the band. In fact, he's one of the best musicians in the band period. At least clarinet is a reed instrument - I switched to tenor from flute and it took a bit to get used to the vibration. And don't even get me started on reading the low notes... that took forever. x_x;;

I'm sorry it took me so long to post here after joining. I am a saxophonist turned oboist, and I play the soprano, alto, tenor, and bari saxes. Alto for marching band, Tenor for random occasions when it is needed, and Soprano and Bari for Jazz Band. I play oboe during concert season, so I really don't play concert saxophone, though that style carries over to marching band in most cases. I am now in my 5th year of playing saxophone, and I still love the instrument.

Besides, the school needs tenor saxes, we don't have any in marching band this year, and only one in symphonic band. I don't know about the concert band, but we have no such shortage of alto saxes, so there'd be no point in learning that.

Between the two bands, we have something like six altos, four tenors and a bari during marching season, 'cause we've got three people doubling (me included). During concert season that changes to four altos, three tenors and a bari. What we've mostly got a shortage of is bari - maybe I should've learned that. xd Though I'd probably look ridiculous carrying it....

In my fifth year of playing alto, third of bari. I play alto in marching and concert bands (2nd chair! Woot!) and bari in jazz band and sax quartet. It kind of sucks being the only good bari player because I'd much rather play alto but they always need a bari gonk
I really want to play soprano but our band doesn't have music for concert stuff and I don't have a saxophone. Going to buy one once I get a job...

Trace Keryn It's only places like this that you really see the differences between Canada and America. Here in Canada, we don't do the first chair/ second chair thing. We just grab parts. And we rarely get the same thing twice in a row. Though, I generally fight for seconds. I like them. I'd rather play melody than harmony, but I know harmony is where I can make the biggest difference in our band.
Also, we don't have marching bands here in Canada. Well, that's a lie. We don't have marching bands in SCHOOL. I am in a marching band, but it's through Cadets. 333 Lord Beaverbrook Air Cadet Squadron Band!! w00t!!
At Cadets, we also have a drill team and a guard. The drill team is fun because it's just drill. No instruments, no rifles, just prescision drill. ((Hence the term "prescision drill team")) Our guard rifles weigh like 12 pounds. It's hard to get used to them, but everyone feels that if we get lighter ones it'll wussify the guard. It's pretty much guaranteed that someone will come out of practice with a broken finger and we all get big bruises. Hehehe....fun fun...
I'm in my school's concert band. Senior concert band, that is....*ahem*... Where do you live? I'm in B.C., and I've been thinking, "Chairs... hmmmm.... I'll figure this out eventually, probably... sweatdrop " In our band, though, certain people usually play certain parts all the time, with a few variations. Last year Ms. J said I was only aloud to play 1st, and Jesse only 2nd, but he doesn't even want to be in band. His mom forces him (she's VP of the band parent association). There's a certain prestige to being 1st, but since I switched in from clarinet I decided nt to upsurp the original (and self-proclaimed, I might add) section leader. But since he switched to bari last year, I'm now the almighty one blaugh We're divided into bands by grade, since it's a class, from 8-10. Then it's senior band, which isn't a course. I played clarinet for a year, then sax (3rd year, with no end in the forseeable future), and my (new) sax is a Jupiter, my old rental was a Julius Kielworth (which is just 2 different branches of the same company, but *anywho*), but I'd love to get a black bodied sax with silver keys... *drools* I'll get the pics up sometime soon. Sorry for the bracket thing, I'm in a mood 3nodding

Heya! ^_^
I play teh Alto sax, sometimes. I'm mostly play clarinet... But I like the sax better. It's just a matter of getting a sax of my own heh.. sweatdrop I learned how to play saw the summer of '03. It was so random, then when school went back into session I ended up filling in for a guy who played alto, he eveantually came back, and I got moved back to clarinet. ^_^
My heart lies with the Saxes. (seeing how I'm dating a guy that plays tenor.. ^^ I <3 Father God... he also be head of band Mafia) 3nodding

HEY! I TAKE THAT OFFENSIVELY!! ONLY BAD OBOISTS SOUND LIKE DUCKS!! *laughs* My second chair, (and only other oboist) sounds like one, so I got first after my first year of playing oboe. I had only taken lessons, and not played in actual band. But, anyway, if you are a good oboist with a "dark" sound, you never have to worry about being a duck. I sound more like a snake charmer. *laughs*

The Saxophone was the first instrument I learned besides the piano...since then the quest of learning to play instruments has snoballed to the point i have some knowledge of each and every instrument in the band...with the exception of the double reeds... I picked up a tenor in the seventh grade after playing alto for two years prior...i wanted the biggest baddest instrument in the 8th grade so i picked up a battered and abused bari sax my band teacher(and musical mentor Mr. Jim Cutler) had on hand for us unforgiving middle schoolers...the lows have stayed with me ever since...three years in high school now and I'm his best bari player yet...most his other players couldn't fulfill the sound of the refurbished signet bari the highschool has quite like I do...but I will say one thing negative about it...it sucks when you have to march with the damn thing...luckily NeoTech has a shoulder harness neckstrap thingy just for the Eflat bari...I really wish i had one... sweatdrop

Mwahahaha. It is a nice neck strap. I started Bari in 7th grade, and it is my primary jazz instrument. I wouldn't feel fulfilled if I had to play it in concert band, because our bari music is easy and boring.
