Shoujo Kakumei J-chan Divash Another good reason to avoid pork, even if you're not Jewish or Muslim: Pork tastes salty because pigs don't have sweat glands. All the impurities they absorb throughout their whole lives are still in their meat and fat. For those who have eaten pork, you remember how salty it was, right? Well, that's why. You were eating the sweat that pigs don't sweat out. ... Ugh. That's disgusting, really? My parents eat a lot of ham and my mother always complains about how salty it is. (Don't ask me why they keep eating it, then.) I should tell her that and see what she says. x_X Yep. It's utterly nasty. The more I learn about pigs and about shellfish, the more glad I am that I'm keeping kosher. I've got a friend who just loves lobster. I'm debating showing her the website I saw that explains how closely lobster, shrimp, prawns, and scampi are related to cockroaches and centipedes.

I have always kept kosher. The reason why you are not allowed to eat milk and meat together is because it says that you are not allowed to cook a calf in its mother's milk. you have to slaughter an animal in a certain way because it doesn't hurt the animal.

Donovinhs Knight Divash Pork tastes salty because pigs don't have sweat glands. ... . You were eating the sweat that pigs don't sweat out. Are you sure thats correct? The only pork Ive eaten that has been salty, is pork thats been cured and preserved. Yes, I'm sure. Ask a veterinarian, or any science teacher. Pigs don't sweat. That's one reason they like to roll around in mud: it keeps them from getting overheated.

But I was more wondering about the pigs being salty because their sweat goes into the meat. If they dont have sweat glands how to they produce sweat?

I don't keep kosher, but I try to in the best way I can. I eat shellfish because it's a main food source where I live, and if I stopped eating it, I'd starve. It's all they serve at my school because it's easy to get here.
I do not eat pork, and never will. talk2hand

So with all the pork talk: G-d commanded us not to eat pork because it's unhealthy? I've heard that science is now proving how healthy it is to keep kosher, but I've never heard any actual facts before now.
I try to keep kosher. I'll pick off the pepperoni and replace it with turkey pepperoni. In restaurents, if I'm unsure whether or not it's kosher, I eat it anyway. sweatdrop In my opinion, it's kosher until proven otherwise.

I used to keep Kosher when I was little and lived out in Baltimore, but now I live in Hawaii, and that's just not an option if I want to eat healthy, I can't get any real protein other then fish - unless I want to eat old freezer burned chicken or shoe leather (beef). If you want to keep kosher in Hawaii it's about the same as going vegetarian. I keep only some of the rules of keeping Kosher, I try not to eat milk after meat, or vise versa, and I only eat foods that are considered Kosher but are not actually kosher - like regular grocery store chicken, but I will never eat pork or shellfish. My kitchen is kept Kosher so when I'm at home I eat Kosher all the time, but when I'm at a friends house or at a restaurant I eat non-Kosher because there is nothing else. It's my choice, maybe when I'm older and on the mainland somewhere i'll keep again, but right now I'll just continue eating the way I have.

Donovinhs Knight Ok, I can see pigs not sweating since a lot of animals dont. But I was more wondering about the pigs being salty because their sweat goes into the meat. If they dont have sweat glands how to they produce sweat? The point is that they don't produce sweat. Mammals who produce sweat can rid their bodies of impurities. It's why sweat smells bad, and if you've been sweating and you lick your upper lip, it tastes salty. Kind of gross. Pigs don't sweat, so all the impurities just stay there in their bodies. Bored Summer Girl G-d commanded us not to eat pork because it's unhealthy? I've heard that science is now proving how healthy it is to keep kosher, but I've never heard any actual facts before now. We don't know why G*D commanded us not to eat pork. However, we know that there are many good reasons -- the sweat thing, the fact that it's impossible to slaughter one in a painless way (unlike the animals that are kosher), the fact that they're smarter than most people's children. We can't help but be healthier by obeying G*D's commandments. After all, the Torah itself says "You shall live by it [the Torah]," rather than "You shall live and die by it." But ultimately, we don't know why G*D commanded us not to eat pigs. We just know that G*D did command us. For those who choose to keep kosher, there are many reasons to obey, but we don't know which of them (or another, unknown reason) was Hashem's reason for commanding.

It's also entirely possible there isn't even a reason. "Study and keep my Torah, and merit your reward".
But I think that the point is that everything in life is supposed to be sanctified in G-d's name. By keeping kosher we remember G-d before we eat, because before you eat or choose that food you have to stop and think - "Wait, is this kosher?". Every time we eat we stop and make a blessing over out food, thus reminding ourselves that everything is from G-d. By doing this we sanctify our lives to G-d, and through that we merit reward. By keeping kosher a person is reminded of G-d and of kedusha even in a relatively mundane activity, such as eating - it is made holy by including the laws of Kosher and Blessings.
