I have missed talking in the forum... I had to evacuate for Ivan and I still don't have power. I went to my favorite store to get on the net this little bit. Yeah, we haven't had school since Monday, and we won't be able to go back til Tuesday. I miss my section. =(

Chirpdee Nechama The alto saxes are all by themselves. How high is the high G...an uber G or just a regular G....I know some people who can play the uber G. I, personally, cannot read that many leger lines. Neh, not the uber G. The composers aren't that crazy. razz It's the G sitting so very unlovingly right on top of the bars- not the one in them, and not the one way above them. It's not really super hard to hit normally, but it's evil when you have to hold it out for a measure or so while the trumpets around you have to go slow to get their quarter notes and triplets right while we practice, or when you're having to concentrate on moving forward on the field at 28 million miles per hour to make way for your rookie simultaniously. >_> I can barely get up to the high C above the staff, but I haven't ever tried to squeak past that. (I think my brain would explode. gonk ) I can't read ledger lines that high (or low...) very well, either, although I'm learning the ones on the bottom so I can play in the lower octaves in our songs in concert band. Speaking of ledger lines and stuff like that, french horn + bass clef = evil in a bag. It's okay...I can barely squeak a high C too. I got the Bb over the summer, though!

Okay, and now for horn jokes... b/c you must learn to laugh at yourself! xp
~How do you get your viola section to sound like the horn section? Have them miss every other note.
~How can you make a trombone sound like a french horn? Stick your hand in the bell and play a lot of wrong notes
~What is the difference between a french horn section and a '57 Chevy? You can tune a '57 Chevy.
~What do you get when you cross a French Horn player and a goalpost? A goalpost that can't march.
~How many French horn players does it take to change a lightbulb? Just one, but he'll spend two hours checking the bulb for alignment and leaks.
~Why is the French horn a divine instrument? Because a man blows in it, but only God knows what comes out of it.
~How do horn players traditionally greet each other? 1."Hi. I played that last year." 2."Hi. I did that piece in junior high."
~A girl went out on a date with a trumpet player, and when she came back her roommate asked, "Well, how was it? Did his embouchure make him a great kisser?"
"Nah," the first girl replied. "That dry, tight, tiny little pucker; it was no fun at all."
The next night she went out with a tuba player, and when she came back her roommate asked, "Well, how was his kissing?"
"Ugh!" the first girl exclaimed. "Those huge, rubbery, blubbery, slobbering slabs of meat; oh, it was just gross!"
The next night she went out with a French horn player, and when she came back her roommate asked, "Well, how was his kissing?"
"Well," the first girl replied, "his kissing was just so-so; but I loved the way he held me!"

This page has some rather amusing stuff. It's the kind of stuff that's only funny if you play horn, or at least know a lot about horn playing and history.

well, about horn brands...my french horn teacher likes conn 8ds best...they're conn's professional horns, as opposed to the 6d, which is a student horn. you actually want to buy an older horn...because they were made better around 10 years ago...but they're around 3000 dollars, and that's a bargain. my teacher has 3 conn 8d's, and a new horn made in germany, i'm not sure what make, but it cost her about 5500 dollars. my horn is a conn 8d and is about 5 years old, and it's silver. it was 1500 dollars, since my teacher bought it on ebay and fixed it. now it's the coolest 3nodding

Double horn allowed me to go above a middle friggin' C for the first time, in 8th grade. XD

They thought (at band camp) that it was funny that my own personal horn was a double, and yet I played it as a single. So they taught me how to play a double.

You want to train yourself to get the higher notes on the single horn first so it is easier on the double. Don't use the double all the time; it will ruin your range. Just trying to help smile
