March 13, 2005

Hello, Diary! Magiale signing in for my, umm, monthly report. 3nodding For the month of February! Or maybe March...umm, yeah. It's been a nice, slow, and relatively uneventful year so far, and as far as I'm concerned, that's good! However, I've been swarmed to no end by homework and projects and this and that...But it is kinda nice to have a fairy by you when you're doing your homework. Raphael isn't a genius, but he does seem to learn bookwork pretty quickly. He's like, an awesome student. My teacher's would love him, if simply because he doesn't blurt stuff out all the time, like, err, me. Eh heh.

Yeah. I'll never understand quiet people.

Anyway, since March is here already I figured it's about time Raphael moved back into the basement! I'm sure he'll miss living outside, but it's about to get warm pretty soon. Aramis suggested that I keep him out for just a bit longer (since it's not going to be warm any time soon, and spring technically isn't here yet), but the fact that Aramis was interested in keeping Raphael outside immediately alerted me that RAPHAEL SHOULD GO INSIDE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I just don't trust that snake. >.> I might just consider sleeping in the basement with Raphael as well, just in case, 'cause I don't really trust Simara either.
The main problem with putting him inside so soon is that we'll have to turn off the heat. Or maybe surround him in a block of ice. But that would melt and would leave a mess. Hum.
I'll have to think about this one.

Yeah, well, I have a bunch of ucky homework stuff I have to do for tomorrow, and then tomorrow I have to do all these ucky school things that will probably keep me in school until well after six, after which I must rush home and complete homework possibly well past my "bedtime", after which the cycle must go on and on and on.
But I have Raphael to help me. Maybe I'll take him to school. No one would see him! Right? It's about time he went out and saw the world. heart

RP with Zelda ((The rest of the shop RP can be found here.))
Sundragyn
Zelda flapped into the shop, grumbling to herself. With every passing day she had been getting more and more antsy over that innocent little yellow bloom in the kitchen window. Who knew what would happen when that thing emerged? Nothing good, she was sure.

Good heavens, it was crowded in here. She set her jaw and slipped forward.
"Did something happen?" Zelda asked no one in particular. "Everyone seems so worked up."

Magiale
As things seemed to have calmed down, Raphael uncurled from his spot next to the wall and stood. Odd...he tried to unfurl his wings to take off, but somehow, they seemed stuck.
He reached back and touched them tentatively, slightly confused.

Sundragyn
Zelda spied Raphael and ventured closer. "Do you know what happened? Wait. Are you okay?" While she was certain she would never allow herself to be in such a situation as this fellow, he didn't seem well at all. "Something big did happen, didn't it?"

Magiale
Raphael gave Zelda a meek nod, still confused. His wing felt oddly numb.
"Y-yes...everyone started y-yelling...and stuff.." he answered.

Sundragyn
"Yelling?" Zelda thought this over. "Was there a fight of some sort? Over what?" She glanced around. Everything seemed okay now, if a bit tense. How perplexing. And she just had to miss it, too.

Magiale
Raphael blushed and gave another nod. He wasn't really sure on what happened himself, but he figured answering was the polite thing to do.
Actually...he could vaguely remember something that the lady had said...
"T-there was a lady here...and she was saying something about an ultimate feien. And - and, we would have to leave our bonds...but they would get something better in exchange." Oddly, he found his voice when he said these words.
"A rare feien...saving the feien from extinction?" His brow furrowed.

Sundragyn
Zelda blinked. "Leaving our bonds?" she repeated carefully. Sunny was an idiot, yes, but... "Wouldn't we die if we did that?" On the other hand, if she could only orchestrate some accident in the kitchen, make off with the bloom, and... yes, this lady could have that. And no more worries about younger-sibling-feien that would interfere with her as yet non-existent plans. No, there were those damn pixapets all over and at least one of them would see. Worse than security cameras, since they moved. "She probably doesn't know what she's talking about," she concluded.

Magiale
Raphael paused to consider that.
"Yes...you're right."
The tenseness in his shoulders seemed to relax a bit. Of course! It's impossible to leave your bond. He didn't need to think about leaving at all.
The feeling was ever so slowly beginning to return to his wings. Carefully, the yellow feien tested one of them. It shivered in its place, giving a meek, ineffective flap. Hm.

Sundragyn
"Is your wing all right?" Zelda blinked at Raphael with every pretense of worry. Ugh, imagine losing the use of a wing, even for a little while! Yuck. She thought she'd scream if that happened to her. What little freedom she had in a house designed for people so much larger than her would be cut down to almost nothing. "It doesn't look injured. Was it banged around or something?"

Magiale
He shook his head in response.
"N-no." He pulled at the wing with his hand, partly out of nervousness, and partly in the hopes that stretching it would help.
"I, I must have sat on it," he answered, vaguely remembering something he'd heard from Magiale.
"I-if you sit on your hand for too long, it-it...umm," he struggled to remember, "it'll...go numb."

Sundragyn
"I think I read something about that," Zelda remarked. She tapped her finger against her lips. "Cutting off the circulation? Something like that." She shrugged and folded her hands behind her.

Magiale
"Thats it," he said with a meek smile, grateful that he wouldn't have to explain it. He was terrible at explaining things.
Then his blush deepened as he realized how rude he was being. "I-I'm sorry..." he mumbled, embarassed. "I-I'm, I didn't introduce myself." The yellow feien haltingly held his hand forward for a handshake. "My name is Raphael."

Sundragyn
"I'm Zelda." She took his hand and shook it carefully. The poor guy seemed almost about to run away from her. At least it was nice to know that there were some feien who didn't get horribly under her skin. "But I didn't introduce myself, either."

Magiale
"That's alright," replied the yellow feien quickly. He shook her hand, remembering to let go after three shakes.
"Umm, nice to meet you, Zelda." He said, politely. "Sorry for the trouble."
Nevermind that there hadn't really been any trouble.

Sundragyn
Er? "Don't worry about it," Zelda beamed, waving a hand broadly. She had no idea what this trouble he was talking about was, but never mind, no need to let on her ignorance. "Are you going to be all right to get home?" She thought it was about time she headed home, herself... it got a bit nippy at night.

Magiale

Raphael nodded.
"Y-yes, I can get home."
He stretched his wings out, noting that they could move completely. He gave the other feien an apologetic smile. It certainly was nice of her to be so tolerant of the trouble he'd caused her.
"How about you?"

Sundragyn

"I'll be fine." And even if she wasn't, she would, of course, insist that she was fine anyway. Zelda grinned confidently. "It's a little ways home, but I'll be fine. It was very nice to meet you, Raphael." And she actually meant that, too. Amazing. She grinned and headed out.

Magiale

Raphael waved Zelda good bye, as was the polite thing to do.
He waited, of course, until she was completely gone before taking to the air himself. It'd been a rather long shop visit...well, at least considering how long he usually stayed. He nodded a quiet, unseeable goodbye to the remaining feien before taking off himself. His wings were still a bit sore, but he didn't seem to have any trouble flying. Quietly, he flew through the window and headed for home.

Raphael
I wanted to write on you yesterday, little scraps of paper, but when I got home I was exhausted. I'd decided to visit the shop. Magiale told me to, and said that I should go there more often. When I came back, she had my crate set up in the basement again. It was getting warm outside, but I will miss living in the backyard. It was open and free. Like in that one book.
Anyway, about yesterday. How do I start?
Oh yes. I visited the shop, only to notice a bunch of feien and two humans already there. The woman...she was in black, and she was talking about some kind of ultimate feien. And about bonds getting a feien that they really wanted. When I heard about that I suddenly got this weird feeling in my head. Would, Magiale want to trade me? I can't really think of why she wouldn't. It would make her happier, wouldn't it? Happier to have a better feien. But then later I bothered another feien about it (she'd just arrived). Zelda. I realized that I wouldn't have to leave my bond at all, because doing so is impossible. My mind felt much better after that, though I keep getting this nagging feeling that I'm missing something important. Still, it means I don't have to make a decision about it.
Once again I wish I was more outgoing.
When I came home, like I said, I went into the basement again. It's warmer than it was outside, but Magiale had plenty of icecubes down there with me. When I woke up, they were all melted, and I was in a puddle of water. I'd learned about something like that in one science book. I think after awhile they're supposed to change into air. Just like after awhile this paint will dry.

Raphael sat quietly in his basement crate, surrounded by a fresh batch of ice cubes. His mind, as shallow as it was, had been strangely bothered as of late. He wasn't quite sure why it was as bothered as much as it was. Or maybe he just didn't want to think about it.
Blue eyes fell upon the magical gemstone he'd received not too long ago, where it sat among the myriad of other items. A small hand reached for it, and then proceeded to lift it up to the yellow feien's eye level, where he could examine it mre closely.
Of course, the whole action was just a bit silly, as he'd looked at the gem in this same way many times before. His long moments of alone time were not just spent trying to absorb useless facts from way-too-big books or flying around randomly in speedy little circles. It could be said that the yellow feien had just the tiniest little fondness for his material posessions, even if he didn't realize this fact himself, and as such, when he was tired of reading and flying and couldn't sleep, he would simply glance at his little trinkets. They calmed him down, in the way immaterial concepts could not.
However, Magiale had grown just a bit wary of his horribly untrained and ridiculous use of the rapier- he hadn't really learned much from his first spin with the thing, and had since fainted every time he used it. Well, not quite faint, but he did have a thing for overexerting himself.
The yellow object was turned over carefully in the feien's fingers. It seemed almost to glow.
Gemstones..
A light went off in Raphael's head.
A gemstone! Of course!
He placed the thing carefully on one of the icecubes and gave it a polite smile. Might as well make it comfortable.
"Sorry for staring at you so much." He told it, apologetically. "I've never seen a gemstone so small before! Are you a miniature Feien of some sort?"
Of course, he didn't expect it to answer. Celaien hadn't, after all.
He sighed, and retreated into himself somewhat. That one thing was still bothering him. It bothered him so much, he tried his best to not remember what it was.
"Did you use much paint during your life?" asked the yellow feien in whisper that he himself could barely even hear.
"It changes the colors of things. Even your hands. Maybe I should paint."
He extended from his withdrawn state just far enough to reach for the white paint, which he smeared onto a nearby ice cube with his hand.
A snowflake. How pretty.

You should really consider reading more often...
"GOOD MORNING RAPHAEL!!" shouted an overly enthusiastic Magiale as she danced around his crate. Raphael sat up, bleary eyed and confused.
"Wha..?"
"It's Easter! Easter easter easter..."
Magiale danced around the crate, giggling and all smiley.
"Someone should consider banning your use of chocolate," noted a recently awakened Simara.
Magiale ignored her.
"So! Raphy!" she grinned and peered into the crate. A yellow feien finally crawled out, sopping wet.
She giggled at him.
"We're gonna have to dry you off! Silly Raphy."
Never mind that the surrounding Raphael with melting icecubes thing had been her idea.
"Anyway, time to hunt for eggs! It's what my family always does on easter." She puffed herself up proudly. She liked her family.
"Wh-what's Easter?" asked Raphael timidly. He was embarassed about asking her, but he honestly didn't know.
Magiale sighed. Did that feien know anything? Geez.
She explained it to him.
~~~
"The eggs are hidden in the basement. They might be a bit big for you, though, so if you need me to carry one for you, just find me!" giggling, she left for the kitchen. Breakfast. <3
And so Raphael was left alone. Alone again. In the basement. Simara was snoring. That at least was somewhat soothing.
Taking one of the pieces of the icecube Magiale had left, the yellow feien took off, looking about with his eyes. He remembered vaguely what eggs looked like. They were oval shaped, and a bit hard, perhaps, and white - though Magiale said that these would be colored.
Hidden, though? Where would they be hidden?
Cradling the ice shard carefully in his arms, the yellow feien hovered around the book shelfs. There were all sorts of books here...perhaps the egg would be hidden among them? He frowned, searching for something round and oval...oh!
A bright pink object peeked at him from among the dusty black and brown novels. He quickly landed at a bit of shelf space nearby and headed for it. The eggs were colored, right? Except...
He frowned when he reached it. It wasn't an oval. It was a booklet of papers bound by pink foil.
It wasn't a particularly thick booklet, but it was thick enough to have a title on the binding. And it was at this title that Raphael stared, surprised.
On Feien Fairies, Copied from the shop by Magiale. Personal Copy.
Curiosity overcame him. Come to think of it, he really didn't know much about his race. He knew that there was information in the shop, that there were books there, and a rule board...but he'd never read them.
But that something still nagged at the back of his mind, and he needed to know. To know for sure that he would never have any reason to have to be...traded.
He didn't know why, but the very thought sent shivers down his spine. He wasn't worthy, he didn't do Magiale any good...he was, in a word, worthless.
Perhaps it would say. But...
Half of him wanted to open the booklet, but the other half of him didn't want to know. What if it wasn't as he thought it was?
The booklet he dragged from the shelf, where it fell on the floor with a light flop. He himself dropped down where it lay flat on the ground. Slowly, he pulled the cardboard cover open with the entirety of his bodyweight, and..
"RAPHY!"
A pale hand hastily pulled the startled yellow feien away from the pink foil bound book.
"Raphy!" Magiale repeated, huffing and puffing. A light blush was on her cheeks. "Don't look at that book!!"
Raphael also blushed, embarassed, "I-I'm s-sorry..." he mumbled.
"It's okay," she sighed, relieved that she was in control. Carefully, she placed the yellow feien on the shelf and stole the book from the floor.
"Don't go looking for this again, okay?" she said sternly as she stalked up the stairs. Then, in a more cheerful tone, "Why not find some more of those eggs, eh?"
Raphael shuddered. He needed another icecube.
Dear Diary:
Bleh. I can't believe myself, leaving stuff laying around like that. >.> I was wondering where I had put that little booklet. Honestly, I'd rather not have Raphy see what an obsessive note-taker I am. He might get scared. Really, he can look at the shop things himself.
Anyway, Easter was lots of fun! It took Raphy only an hour or so to find the eggs (Simara helped him carry them) and then we had breakfast. =) I gave Raphy his own egg (colored yellow, of course) and he...umm, kinda almost ate it all on his own. =3 Hehe.
Then we had lots and lots of chocolate and peeps and candy eggs and stuff. Raphy had a bit of trouble eating all of it, though, so I suppose he can finish his share later. That one egg isn't much to me, but to him it's a feast, isn't it?
I always find that kind of interesting. If humans could be as small as feien, and create machines that small...less fuel would be used, less pollution..
I digress. n.n
Anyways. I introduced Raph to his first movie. Gosh, he's been alive for six months, and he hasn't watched TV ONCE. Can you believe it? Unfortunately his first movie ended up being "Ella Enchanted", which doesn't follow the book AT ALL. I was angry, man. The story they came up with wasn't even that good! The prince was kinda hawt, tho.
After that Raphael went back into his crate. It's spring now, so I've turned the heater off. Hopefully Raphael will be able to live without those ice cubes, 'cause heck knows, I'm not handling anymore of them. Icky things.
Raphael
Dear Diary,
I'm not quite sure what to do. I feel confused. But, it's Magiale's business, isn't it? Yes. She knows what's right, and she'd never do anything bad. If it's the wright thing, then I should "go along with it".
Easter was fun. I still had an egg left, but Magiale threw it away because she said it was going to "spoil". I don't know what that means. I'll have to ask Simara.
Simara was scolding Aramis earlier today. I don't know why she was. It was the first time I ever saw her angry. Apparently when she gets angry, whip cream is on her head. Or is it: When whip cream is on her head, she gets angry. I'm not sure. All I know is that she was angry and that she had whip cream on her head, and that Aramis said something like "April Fools". I read about it in one of Magiale's books. I'm not sure what it is exactly.
Then later on (is that how you say that?) Magiale started angry and was yelling, but she didn't have whip cream on her head. Then she told Aramis to stop trying to fool me, because it's really mean, but I don't understand. Aramis wasn't trying to fool me. He was simply telling me about his childhood, and how all faeries have to do everything he tells them to do. I didn't see how he was any different from how he usually is.
For some reason I'm still curious about that book, even though Magiale specificullie(sp?) stated that I shouldn't. She's always right, of course.
I'm still in the basement righte now. It's oddly quiet.
Not much had occurred in the Magiale household over the past few weeks. Raphael had spent much of his time in his little crate, finding himself to have an insatiable curiosity for books, and easily remembering things even if he didn't actually know what any of it actually meant. Magiale seemed to be busier lately, but always remembered to come and spend lots of time with Raphael during the weekends, where she would attempt (and fail) to feed him ice cream, and attempt (but barely succeed) to get him to talk to her.
Raphael honestly did try his best. But whenever he saw that ice cream, the only thing he could think of was that it was poison for him and that Magiale didn't know that it was. But as he was shy, he didn't want to be impolite and tell her so. As such, Magiale just assumed that Raphy just didn't like ice cream that much and brought him blueberries instead. He became attached to these at once, and Magiale was pleased.
This Saturday, the human with bunny ears descended the stairs of the basement, a plate of fruit in her hands. She figured if Raphael loved blueberries, he would love strawberries and watermelon and cataloupe and grapes and peaches and apples and pears and oranges and grapefruit - just as much.
She'd only brought strawberries, though - they didn't actually have any other kinds of fruit besides strawberries at that point. Most of the food in their house right now was canned and could last a long time. She figured they might have canned peaches somewhere.
When she got to Raphael's cluttered room, she stepped carefully to the small clearing surrounding the crate. Near the edge of the crate opening was the yellow Raphael, lying on a human-sized piece of paper, painting blotchy yellow and brown markings all over it. Magiale noted that she should probably buy him some new colors.
The feien looked up from his coloring and sat up. He gave her a polite smile and a wave. The human set the plate down and took a closer look at Raphael, puzzled.
"Raphael...what are those markings on you? Did you get hurt?"
"Huh?" he frowned, and looked down. He blushed.
"I-I'm so-sorry..." he mumbled, barely audible. But Magiale could see what happened. She laughed.
"Raphael! You laid on your own drawing, didn't you!" she stiffled her laugh into a giggle. Raphael, seeing that apparently he didn't do anything wrong, allowed himself to smile too, though he wasn't sure what was so funny.
"Anyway, I'm not going to bother cleaning you up. That paint is impossible to wash off."
Raphael nodded, understanding.
"Oh yeah! I have breakfast!"
Magiale picked up the plate and placed it a few inches away from the paper, where Raphael could get to it. He stood and walked towards the plate hesitantly.
"They're strawberries!" she said eagerly, "they're delicious and good for you! Try them!"
Reassured, the yellow feien flew over the plate and touched one of them. They were awfully big.
To Magiale's surprise, the feien didn't use his hand to scoop and eat. Rather, he picked one of the seeds from the strawberries waxy exterior and ate of it. His eyes brightened, but Magiale looked confused.
"Huh? No, silly! You don't eat the seeds, you eat the red part! Here."
She took out a little plastic knife (her parents didn't trust her with real ones) and cut the strawberry in as little pieces as she could manage.
"I think they're sufficiently feien sized, now! Eat."
She watched with a smile as the yellow feien obediently took a piece in both hands and began to chew it. It did taste good.
At that moment, however, Magiale heard a small beep coming from her hand. She checked her watch.
"Raphael, I have to go, okay? See you later!"
The human bounded up the stairs, leaving Raphael with the strawberries. Boy, there were a lot of them.
Raphael gave the little yellow gemstone a soft smile - he had placed it in the center of the yellow magic dust, and it looked awfully pretty. The yellow feien swirled the dust about with his fingers, admiring it's reflective properties.
It kept getting warmer and warmer outside, so much so that Magiale had turned the air conditioning way up high and wouldn't let him out of the basement between 10am and 5pm. But that was okay. Magiale had his best wishes in mind, after all.
Simara and Aramis also felt the effects of warmer weather. Simara couldn't stand the super-duper air conditioning, so generally, Raphael stayed alone (except on those rare occasions when Aramis ventured downstairs.)
The cold fairy lazily stood and stretched out his wings a bit. Magiale would eventually come downstairs and tell him that the sun had set, in which case he could come upstairs. It was usually cold during the nighttime, and today there was something he kinda wanted to check. If not today, then some other day. And also, oddly enough, he kinda wanted to talk to Magiale. And if he didn't talk to her, then he'd probably just listen quietly.
With a final twist of his lower back, Raphael jumped away from his crate and sped through the air. Though he enjoyed being lazy, sitting around all day didn't really suit him, and he liked suddenly shooting off into the air at fast speeds. He didn't like flying for too long though, and just as quickly shot back to his crate, exhilarated, but out of breath.
More slowly, now, he walked back to where the little gem sat. To an outsider it would seem as if he were contemplating it's scientific properties, or perhaps that he was thinking deep, profound thoughts. In truth, he just had nothing better to do. And it was shiny.
Magiale
It was a quiet, sweaty Raphael that entered the shop that day. Quiet, because he was always quiet, and sweaty because it was a sweaty kind of day. He was unusually slow, too, as he felt a bit too tired to be zooming about.
It wasn't a nice day for him, but he was the foolish sort, and when he'd finally made up his mind to read the announcement boards, he hadn't even thought to wait for a cooler day.
The blonde fairy drifted over to where they were posted on the wall, and began the arduous task of reading them.
Ice Queen
Aleric entered through the door, intent on looking at the information scroll again. Silva hadn't come, saying he needed to think. Somehow he wasn't sure about Aleric's bright idea.
Aleric wondered if he was getting drunk again.
He headed into the store, enjoying the quiet peacefulness of the room. Then something gold caught his eye and he turned, smiling slightly at the sight of a juvenile. A male. Without a thought he flew over to the boy. "Hello."
Magiale
Raphael started slightly. He'd been concentrating just a tad too diligently on the first few words of the board, and hadn't noticed the adult until he'd spoken.
Nevertheless, he turned towards the older feien with his meek, polite smile.
"Hello."
He was just a bit wobbly in his turning, and his face had turned red from the heat, and, as always, from the anxiety that always accompanied his talking to others.
"H-how are you today?"
Ice Queen
"I'm good, actually." Aleric said with a little smile. His tone was calm, as always, his movements smooth. "My name is Aleric. And you are?" The boy was red and stuttering slightly... obviously not very good around others... or maybe just nervous around adults. It would be interesting to see which.
Magiale
"Raphael," he replied, a little reassured by the other's calm demeanor.
Even so, he turned back to the boards, not really wanting to face the other feien/make eye contact. But he tried to make conversation, as it was the polite thing to do.
"Nice to meet you, Aler-um, Aleric. Nice weather today, huh?"
Ice Queen
"It's nice out." Aleric replied, sounding thoughtful. "A good day for a soccer game... or maybe football. I'll have to ask the boys when I get home."
He turned as well, noting his discomfort with others. He was looking for information on breeding, anyways. "How are you doing on this beautiful day?"
Magiale
"I'm also good." Raphael responded, though he was still a shiny red color from the 'nice weather'.
He'd finally started to read the second paragraph, though he hadn't really been paying it as much attention as he appeared to be.
The meaning of Aleric's first few sentences, however, completely breezed past him, and Raphy referred back to them with his next words.
"Soccer? Football? What are those?" he asked with good-natured curiosity.
Ice Queen
Aleric blinked, then reminded himself that not all feien had the same lifestyle as he did. Sports and fighting were like second nature in his household. "Soccer and football are games that groups of people can play together. Where two groups fight over a ball to score points."
He paused, wondering if that made any sense. "It's a... sport." He finished lamely. "My... brother taught me how to play."
Magiale
Raphael nodded in understanding, though as it was, he didn't understand.
"So...people fight over a...ball to score. Okay, alright..." he attempted to paraphrase Aleric's sentence, in the same way he memorized the things he read.
"You have a brother?" he continued, in what he hoped was polite conversation.
Ice Queen
Aleric grinned. "No. I have Silva. He's a rude, arrogant jerk, but we share a bondmate and he teaches me how to fight. So I consider that being my brother." He shrugged. "Not many people know him... or like him... but he's family."
"Do you have any other feien in your home?" He asked, curious.
Magiale
Raphael paused. Did he have any other feien in his family? No, he supposed not.
"No." He finally replied after extensive thought.
"H-having other feien in your house must be nice." he continued. He had noticed, at that point, the information on gemstones and peered at that in interest, though his reading of it consisted mostly of looking at the title.
Ice Queen
Aleric paused, looking thoughtful. "I would think it would depend on the other feien." He said finally. "Dealing with anyone on a daily basis can be hard. Especially if you and he don't get along very well..."
"But in a crisis it comes in handy. There's no one more... stable than someone you consider family." Or maybe it was just Silva. Silva was afraid of nothing, which made him good in a crisis. He wasn't likely to turn into a sniveling weakling... The very idea of Silva panicking made him fight back a laugh.
Magiale
Raphael nodded, absorbing every word he said.
"So, stability is good in a crisis." he stated, "And a person is hard to deal with all the time."
He continued staring at the words on the board, his brain feeling a little numb. Paying attention to two things at once wasn't a very easy task, particularly when he was tired. But he kept his silence on that matter and continued his meek smiling.
Ice Queen
Aleric nodded, sensing the boy's desire to be alone. "I think I'll go see about that soccer game, then. It was nice meeting you, Raphael."
He turned, heading for the edge of the counter to launch off of.
Magiale
Raphy was ever so slightly relieved, but tried his best not to show this fact.
"Goodbye, then, ah, Aleric." he said, finally turning away from the board to wave. "Nice meeting you, too."
Ice Queen
Aleric nodded and took to the air, thinking over what he had read during the conversation. The boy wasn't very good around others, but that was fine. Not everyone could deal with other people. Just look at Silva.
Although the difference between the boy and Silva was vast in many ways. He shook his head, telling himself that he needed to relax. Everything would work out fine.
Magiale
Though it had seemed like Raphael had been diligently reading the entire time, in truth he hadn't absorbed a single word. Now that Aleric was gone, he didn't really have much reason to stay there, besides reading the boards - which clearly he should do on some other day. Yes, another day.
After a few more minutes of peering, the still sweaty feien floated away from the board and clung to the shade as he travelled home.
Dear Diary
The parents are coming back.
Good God. I don't know what to do. Why didn't I think of this? Why didn't I consider this when I went and got Raphael's blossom all those months ago? Ack.
Simara and Aramis can hide easily enough - they always hide when the parents come - but what am I going to do with Raphy? I mean, I suppose he's small enough. But I dunno - how do I explain to him that he's got to hide? And furthermore, where would he hide? He certainly can't hide where Aramis and Simara hide. It's too warm there, from what I hear.
Hmm. I'll have to think on this one. They said they'll be back from the Isle on June 3. Meanwhile, Raphael and I have to have a little chat some time. I really have been withholding information from him.
June 6, 2005
Magiale chewed nervously on her finger tips, checking the clock every so often. It was 5pm, and the parents would be back in exactly one hour. She knew it would be exactly one hour because that was what they had called and told her, and knowing her parents, they wouldn't be even a second late.
She'd placed a confused but compliant Raphael in a dusty old trunk upstairs 15 minutes ago - making sure, of course, to leave the fans on. She realized that the fans would seem rather odd to the parents, considering how high the air conditioning was already. But as horrible as her parent's suspicion might be, the last thing Magiale needed was for the little dear to roast and swelter.
Part of her wanted to go upstairs and check on him, just in case, but another part held her back. She needed to wait. In hopes of finalizing the internal decision, she sat herself down on the stairs that lead upstairs, keeping her eyes on the door.
The two snakes had dissappeared already, thankfully. And it seemed -
Magiale's thoughts were cut short when the doorbell rang.
She sprang to her feet with a jolt. Was it...? No...why would they ring the door to their own house?
Cautiously, Magiale approached the white washed door, attempting to see through the clouded window and screen that hid the entrance hall from intruding eyes. There was a tall, blurred figure standing on the porch, dark, except for a shock of bright red that fuzzed around what appeared to be a face -
She gave a small gasp of recognition and quickly opened the door, wide-eyed at the unexpected appearance of the old friend.
A dark man, covered completely in black except for a shock of frizzy red hair, stared at Magiale from behind his sunglasses and black handkerchief mask. They appraised one another for a few moments before she broke the silence.
"Fuzzy!"
The man visibly winced.
"Magiale, how many times have I told you not to call me that?"
She shrugged in an amused way, leading him inside, and immediately began fussing over him.
"What's with all this heavy clothing? It's almost 90 degrees outside - "
"81, actually."
Magiale waved her hand dismissively at the green snake, who'd just appeared.
"That's still warm enough to..."
She stopped suddenly, looking at Aramis with a horrorstruck look on her face. She glanced quickly at Fuzzy, who'd just removed his black trench coat and was staring at Aramis, who stared back.
"Magiale," stated Fuzzy with a cool edge to his voice, "what are these abominations?"
She noted, with an inward groan, that Simara had also appeared, and was also staring at the stranger from the kitchen doorway.
"That's Aramis - " she pointed at him with a shaky finger, "And the one just arrived is Simara." Neither of them moved when she mentioned them.
"I...see," said Fuzzy, and he tore his eyes from the two snakes (who continued to stare anyway) to glance calmly down at the small teen, who gave a small, nervous smile.
"In those letters - you never mentioned flying snakes." Magiale rubbed at the back of her head.
"I knew how you'd react." she replied quietly.
Fuzzy quickly changed the subject.
"What of the yellow faerie you wrote so much about? Doing well, isn't he?"
Magiale relaxed slightly.
"Yes, yes, he's doing quite well."
"I - ah, wouldn't mind seeing him for myself. I've never seen a real fairy, you see."
Magiale gave a slight laugh.
"You haven't missed much." She moved up the stairs and looked back at Fuzzy expectantly.
"Oh no, you go on ahead," he removed his mask, revealing the bottom of his pale brown face and his rounded nose, "I hope you don't mind if I stay down here."
Magiale frowned, but didn't argue and climbed the stairs, glancing back at the three once she reached the top; they were staring up at her, waiting. She sighed and entered her room.
There was a tiny humming noise reverberating around the pink walls. As her muted footsteps approached the trunk, the humming noise faded and stopped mid note.
Inside the trunk, Raphael clutched at the yellow gemstone that had recently become his new safety blanket, replacing the melt-too-easily ice cubes. It didn't seem to matter to him anymore that the gem could be a dead Feien - what mattered was that it was small and cold, and made him feel safer, somehow. It was almost like a friend, and he had been staring at it when Magiale opened the trunk. He squinted up at her, blinded by the sudden light.
"Come, Raphael," said Magiale with an oddly gentle smile, "we have a guest who wants to meet you."
The idea of meeting a stranger caused Raphael's stomach to twist uncomfortably. However, he nodded and stepped onto Magiale's proferred hand, clutching the little round gem to his chest. She carried him out of the pink room and down the steps, where the quiet forms of Aramis and Fuzzy stared intently at one another. Simara, still stationed near the kitchen doorway, also stared, but seemed more relaxed.
"Ah," smiled Fuzzy as he turned towards Magiale and the small form of Raphael, who had involuntarily panicked and fled behind one of Magiale's pigtails.
"Fear not, small one. I do not harm the gentle-hearted."
Simara gave a small snort, which Fuzzy chose to ignore.
"Gentle hearted?" Raphael peered curiously from behind the gray hair, blue eyes wide.
"It means you are kind and would not hurt a soul. Or so I have heard." He gave Magiale a pointed glance. "You should be proud of your gentle nature, and never deviate from it, or be tempted to commit wicked acts. The easy path is not always the right path, and -"
"Is preaching all you can do?" spoke Simara, who was still staring at Fuzzy with calm consistency.
Raphael, who had been hanging onto Fuzzy's every word, looked confused at the note of hostility in Simara's voice.
Magiale gave a resigned sigh as Fuzzy smartly replied, and gave an offhand glance at the clock. What she saw clearly didn't please her, and what she said next caused Fuzzy to give her a reproving glance.
"Mom and Dad! They're - "
She didn't get a chance to finish. All eyes turned to the door, which had begun toopen.
A short, light-haired man and an only slightly taller dark-haired woman entered their house, the man sunburnt and the woman tanned. Both of them carried a suitcase apiece, the woman also a purse, and both of them had warm smiles which quickly disappeared at the sight that greeted them.
June 6, 2005, continued
"Magiale Plumera Irving! What did I say about having guests to our house while we were gone?" barked the woman, a cold, stern look on her face. Both Magiale and the blond man flinched, though Magiale''s flinch was caused mostly by her mother''s use of her middle name. Magiale hated that name.
Magiale''s father fingered the bridge of his glasses nervously and attempted to act in a civilized fashion, extending his hand to Fuzzy. Fuzzy stared at him for a second, and then turned to Magiale with a raised eyebrow.
"These your parents? They don''t look anything like you."
Magiale shrugged. The movement of her shoulders caused Raphael, who''d so far been hiding, to lose his balance. He fell forward and just managed to catch himself with a swift movement of his yellow wings.
Magiale''s mother shrieked.
"A fairy! A fairy! In our house! Get it out, get it out!" she swung her purse at Raphael, who deftly managed to fly away just in time. She began chasing him, grabbed an old newspaper from the table and swung it about.
"Mom! MOM!" Magiale attempted to control her mother, "Mom, he''s harmless, he''s not one of the mean ones, he''s a feien, he came from a bloom, Mom, Stop!"
Mrs. Irving finally stopped, her chest heaving from the effort. Raphael clung to the ceiling, looking down on Magiale''s mother with a puzzled expression.
"I''m sorry," he finally said, blushing brightly, "I didn''t mean to upset you."
Magiale rolled her eyes.
"It wasn''t your fault, Raphy. Mom just hates fairies, that''s all."
He blinked. "Why?"
Magiale grinned up at him.
"Because fairies gave me these," she pointed at her bunny ears.
"They cursed you to insanity, blindness, and to a lifetime of eating carrots!" her mother fumed.
"Now now, honey," said Magiale''s father soothingly, "this fairy is harmless. And we should unpack."
They hurried up the stairs.
Fuzzy''s other eyebrow shot into his hair.
"I''ll let you deal with this, Magiale," he said. He pulled his hood down tightly, gave the two snakes one last stare, nodded to Raphael, who was still sticking to the ceiling, and exited through the front door. After he''d left, Aramis and Simara slithered off to wherever snakes go when they slither off, and Raphael dropped from the ceiling, landing carefully on Magiale''s head.
There was a pause. Then:
"Raphael," Magiale spoke softly, so only Raphael could hear her, "I think it''s time we took a vacation."
Dear Diary,
We've returned. I didn't take my diary with me on the trip, but I can tell you what happened.
My parents came home on June the 6th, at exactly 6:00pm, just as they said they would. However, they happened to have arrived at a rather...unfortunate time.
Mom overreacted, just as I imagined she would upon seeing a fairy. A normal mom would care more about the fact that I was alone in the house with a large, marriageable man, but nooo, Mom just cares about the fairies. I mean, a fairy is nothing compared to Simara and Aramis, and Mom lets me keep them.
As for Dad, he's a wimp. I mean, he's nice enough, and he lets me get away with stuff, but he's always taking Mom's side and he doesn't ever contradict her or anything. Annoying.
Anyway, unlike last year, I decided life would just be easier for all of us if Raphy and I just left. We went exploring in the mountains and across the Gaian countryside, staying in a myriad of different places, from hotels and motels and college dormitories to tents, department stores, and in pine trees. We met other fairies and unicorns and tiny hand sized dragons and gigantic spiders and strange creatures that looked somewhat like maggots. Yep. Gaia is an interesting place.
Raphael is, thankfully, still in one piece. We met Fuzzy in a tavern down in the valley, and I think he was part of the reason for us still being alive. Eh heh.
As I've said, Raphy and I are back home again. I think the experience might have changed him, but I dunno. He seems a little different somehow, but really, he's not too different at all. Hm.
While I was gone, I heard news that there was some kind of draft going on at the Feien Shop, and last week or so, the news was going on about the Feien shop's termination. Raphy didn't get drafted, though, thank goodness.
Anyway, I'm tired right now so I'm just going to stay at home, but tomorrow I definitely need to go visit and find out just what's going on. Or maybe Raphy can. It's probably best if he stays out of the house as often as possible - Mom's still here for another couple of weeks or so, and I'm afraid to leave him in the house while she and Dad are still lurking about.
The thing Raphael remembered most vividly about his traipse around Gaia under Magiale's unusually large hat was his marked lack of interaction with...well, anyone. At home he had plenty of people...or rather, creatures, to talk to. That is, if Simara and Aramis constituted Plenty.
But, alas, the two winged snakes had not been there to provide company. The only person Raphael had been able to talk to was Magiale, and the only time he actually really talked to her had been to ask for a new ice cube.
It had gone something like this:
"Umm...Meh-Magiale...Could I...I mean to say, do you have, or rather, is it possible that, or maybe, umm - "
Raphael was startled out of speech by the lifting of the hat and the resulting light of the Outside World that filled what had been darkness.
"Here," rumbled Magiale's voice below his feet as a pale hand tossed a cube of ice in the hat and promptly closed it again, shutting out the light and again casting Raphael's form in comfortable darkness.
"Thank - thankyou..."
"Don't mention it, but we're running out, y'know."
Raphael nodded, though obviously Magiale could not see his nod, and cradled the ice cube like it was the most valuable object in the universe.
However, after hours spent trekking under the abominably hot Gaian sun, Raphael found that his ice cube had once again melted, and the comfortable refrigerator that had been Magiale's hat had turned in to an uncomfortable oven. Even the little yellow gemstone he carried with him constantly had been robbed of every last bit of coldness it had possessed and turned into the equivalent of a hot cattle brand.
"Magiale..." he said quietly, unable to stand being silent any longer.
"I'm sorry Raphael," panted the rumbling voice beneath him, "just a little longer. There's an oasis town up ahead, we can find a hotel there and get you some ice, okay?"
Raphael nodded and again sat silently, but the heat was unbearable. He squirmed and fiddled with the gemstone, certain that he was going to pass out at any moment...
Anything to stop the heat, anything to make him feel less squirmy and sweaty - he held onto the gemstone, took a deep breath, and attempted to use the power of imagination that Simara had lectured him so adamantly about. The ability to imagine something that wasn't actually there, so that he might be comforted. He imagined that the gem was as cold as it was in the basement - and miraculously, it worked. The imagined cold seemed to flow into him - or did it flow out of him? - from the gem, and Raphael fell asleep, the refreshing cold of the gemstone pressed against his blushing face.
Oddly enough, when he woke up, the gemstone was still cold. When they got into the hotel, finally, and Raphael was allowed out of the hat to witness the cheap, dingy, room with air that smelled like tobacco, the gemstone was still cold. And when Magiale turned the lights out that night, Raphael cradled the gem against his face again, fell asleep, and slowly, the cold disappeared into the night air.
Unknowingly, Raphael had discovered new abilities within himself. Instead of interacting with others, he had interacted with himself, performing feats of introspection that should have been impossible for one with such a lack of wisdom or worldly knowledge.
Now Raphael, who had kept his tongue silent for so long, pondered exercising his rusty voice again. He had heard from Magiale that the Feien Headquarters had moved, and what better time was there to visit?
But as it was, as he sat in his little basement crate, he held onto the little round yellow gemstone, pressed it against his face, and let his fanciful mind wander down different paths of introspection that his lack of worldly knowledge could hardly fathom, much less make sense of.
