Only so many people know wherer to get art supplies that are just awesome for american artist. Well, here is a list of some of the things that most people (especially beginners) need to know about:

You can get all of these supplies from one type of brand: Deleter
Which is the main brand that KNOCK (my manga-ka group) uses.
You can see some of my random artwork using these supplies at:
http://www.jonetsuitamashii.deviantart.com

Manga Paper:
For Proffesional/Commercial Publishing use Size B4
For Doujinshi use A4 or B5
For Color Illustrations, Kent Paper seems to be the best

Pen Nibs:
For fine lines: Maru (great for small details such as hands and hair. I use this nib for most of my work, but they are much more expensive)
For even lines: Saji (I use these for illustrations, but you can use these with pressure if you want uneven and smooth lines)
For thick lines: G-Nib (great for action scenes and manga realism)

Pencils:
I use Zebra mechanical pencils, but for large drawings, use standard pencils (maybe F, HB, or 2B)

Ink:
I use Sumi (indian ink) But there is a large variety of inks. For color illustrations, make sure that you use water proof and non-water solluable (if that is spelled right xD)

Screentone:
There is a LARGE amount of different types of tone you can use. But if you want to save your money... use digital tones. I use Deleter ComicWorks. There are also many different brands, but that all comes from experience.

Coloring:
I just started using Prismacolor pencils, but pencils are harder to use than markers. But if you are going to use pencils, make sure that you add LIGHT layers, for that can be a hassle to erase. And blend every now and then. With markers, they are softer, and tend to be expensive, but DON'T get Prismacolor makers. You may be better off with Neopiko or Copic. I am trying to get some Neopiko markers, but McDonalds doesn't pay too much xD;!!

Well, this is just BASIC, so I hope this helps the inspired artist in you!

alright if anybody is a filipino or been in the philippines or lives in the philippines... PLEASE tell me where to get these things... i ve been saving enough cash to buy a Nintendo DS and i want to get these things hehehe... yeah i may know some stuff to get but these well i would like to get my hands dirty with these things!!! Aha, I still use mechanical pencils and ink with ball point pens... XDD

Since it's not going to be reproduced and printed I don't think it really matters if you're not a professional.

Oh. And getting to the center of a tootsie pop takes an average of 500 licks, I've counted several times in my lifetime in order to get an accurate number. XD

Just a response to the first post. I'd like to share the type of supplies I use for my art works. I hope to get a scanner soon so I can show you how my drawings come out.

Paper: As I am a huge marker user, I use "Beinfang" marker papers. It's great for anyone who uses marker, because it reduces the tendencies of sucking the marker dry and because it's so thin, you can color on the back or the front. Most people don't like it because it wrinkles really easily, but I'm in search for methods to ironing it out. Another kind of paper I've tried using is ink sketch books. Can't remember the name for it, but it's not my favorite.

Pencil: I use Faber-Castell pencils (4H) because the lead is very hard, hence it's easier for me to erase things. I have very messy sketches, which I will go over with ink to define the lines I want.

Ink: Rapidographs are probably the best pens that I recommend using. They're great for inking because they come in various sizes and are reuseable. Sure, they're a bit expensive, but if you're into line quality like I am, they're worth investing on. I also don't like using eight different brands of ink on my work, mostly because they might age at different points.

For the actual Ink, Rapidographs generally work best with Koh-I-Noor. The black ink is very black and it flows wonderfully.

Coloring: I'm a person who likes to mix different media, but my main medium is marker. There are two kinds I use and they are Prisma Colors (great skin tones and hair colors) and Shin Han Touch Markers. Yes, I cannot stress enough about how great Shin Han Touch is. They're easy to blend with and since they don't dry as fast as Prisma Colors, you can blend them with your fingers.

Over time, when I start blending with my fingers, my work starts to get messy, so I use the colorless blenders from Prisma Colors. They're great because it works for both Shin Han and the original Prisma Color markers.

Other extra medium I use are Prisma Colored pencils (which I am proud to say are one of the best color pencils I have used in my whole entire life), bleed proof white (excellent for masking up mistakes and creating very shiny surfaces like patent leather or metal), and sometimes tracing paper. I would have used Acrylics, but Bienfang's marker paper doesn't take them very well and ends up getting all wrinkled and blotchy.

Right now the only special items I use for drawing are the pencils and paper. I used to only use mechanical pencils from Bic, but now I use my Graphite Drawing Kit from Kimberly. As far as paper goes I'm using Academie Sketch Pad.

I want some advice though. I'm planning to ask for art supplies for Christmas, but I'm unsure what to ask for. My family is a middle class family so we can't afford some things like copic markers (as much as I want them badly) and manga paper. Other than those really costly items that it seems every artist has (and I can't get at the moment), what are some items I should definitely ask for? If it helps any I'm going to be majoring in animation in the spring. 3nodding Thanks for your help.

I use a 90lb coldpress 9"x12" 100 sheet sketchbook.

Prismacolor and Prismacolor Scholar pencil crayons.

Any sharp 2HB pencil I can get my hands on.

A Bic ball point ink pen for inking ( you know those ones that are clear and you can buy for like 10 cents a peice.)
The reason I use such a cheep pen is that I love they way it wisps at the end of the strokes and how I can shade with it if I wish.

I use Prang, Crayola, and some other brand of Watercolours.

Some random Acrylic brand.

For the computer I use Photoshop CS and OpenCanvas 1.1, I also plan to get a tablet this Christmas.

And I use an Epson scanner.

I can find prisma pencil crayons but I can't find prismacolor markers, does anybody got any ideas where you can buy them? Would anybody know of a place I could buy a graphire tablet and get it delivered to Canada?

To be honest I use anything available.

But my faves are always Sakura Pigma Micron ink pens. I do use Prismacolor markers but that's because I can't afford Copic markers (They are the best I've used before tho.) I am in love with Pilot Colour Eno mechanical pencils, with blue lead. Berol Prismacolor are my choice for pencil crayon. One of the best pencil sharpeners I have is surprisingly Posey the living Dead Doll sharpener, and I am in love with my hello kitty eraser brush and miniature dust pan. xd As for oils, watercolour, and acrylics I have no real preference. I'm poor so, whatever is on sale. xp

I like any paper that doesn't have that weird powdery texture (i hate that >.<) And I unfortunately draw on anything. When my husband is zoned out I tend to paint on his back while he is on his PS2 sweatdrop
