He uses the momentum of the missed swing to spin around bring down his heavy mace and hit the hobgoblin that he had been attacking.

These are kobold attack rolls
The kobold archers send a volley of arrows at the new group townfolk causing havok among the ranks.
The group of kobolds detached to fight the townsfolk are currently breaking the front line.
