Already, Cabhan had spent nearly a week as Rigel. It was bizarre in and of itself. He didn't feel drained from the prolonged existence as the senshi, and even experimented a bit with removing different articles of his uniform to facilitate easier bathing.

It was an experience he hardly ever expected to need to go through, but he was fascinated by it nonetheless. Already he'd gotten used to removing the various bone accents of his uniform to allow himself to sleep easier without the sharp prodding. The small one and a half bedroom house--half because that was the most they could salvage and reenforce of the second bedroom--he and Seraphinite now occupied offered enough sanctuary and privacy to remind him of their normal living situation as housemates. Of course, the addition of the monster that roamed at night, howling and clawing at houses, trying to break through walls and doors, was... new.

Seraphinite usually stayed up at night, keeping watch. He didn't sleep all that much. Always with his swords in hand, waiting. Rigel, on the other hand, stayed up frequently, but he wasn't a bundle of brooding, raging nerves like the Captain. He was excited and perked up each time he realized the creature was around somewhere. Not that Seraphinite would allow him out to see the creature for himself, but...

Well. The Corrupt was already weighing his options for how likely he could get away with unfortunately getting caught outside one evening instead of returning promptly before dark fell. Probably being out in the woods would help his case, claim he got lost...

The ideas swirled in his head as he made his way out of his temporary room. The bed was a tossed together collection of a straw-stuffed mattress and various blankets over it, some including layers from his uniform at the moment. More comfortable than he'd ever figured it could be. The single-story building went from a small hall where the two rooms were, to a large living room, dining room, kitchen mixture all in one. A hearth sat crackling with fire, a surprise given he didn't see Seraphinite in the immediate area. It was still daylight--ah.

He blinked, bright eyes crinkling at the corners as he caught the sound of grumbling and heavy footfalls outside one of the boarded-up windows. So Seraphinite hadn't just left a fire entirely unattended. Good to know. Still, Rigel hummed, poking about the empty, dusty kitchen area. He knew they didn't have any real food there, besides some of the stuff they'd collected and carried back into their temporary abode. Apples, mostly. Water. Nothing substantial. All of that was still outside.

Whoever might have previously owned the place hadn't left any sort of ornamentation around. Or supplies. It was largely blank, minus dust and debris. They'd hobbled together furniture from other houses that were too damaged to offer any real shelter, forming at least their rooms, and the kitchen set. A simple table and chairs. Sturdy. If not super comfortable for extended periods.

He considered his options for if he should approach the forest again when a simple feature on the table snarred his attention. Blue eyes narrowed, brows furrowed. Rigel stepped closer, head tilting this way and that as he observed the odd addition. It'd not been there the night before when he and Seraphinite had stayed up for a while listening for the monster.

A pack of cards.

A simple little box. Rigel reached for it carefully, opening it up slowly to reveal the basic design on the back of the cards. No numbers on the faces, but clear designs to show their values. He marveled at the development. Had Seraphinite found them? Where?

Rigel sat down slowly in one of the chairs, slowly putting out the cards, setting up a simple game of Solitare after he gave them a quick shuffle. It was something to pass the time with, beyond exploring the bleak village. Something that made him crave the companionship of his camera. The place was beautiful in its decay and decrepit nature. He adored it. But their presence there was... unnerving.

What had drawn them in? Why? What was even the purpose?

Rigel continued to play, enjoying the simple activity. He could hear Seraphinite outside chopping wood. Or, well. breaking it, anyway. The sounds of cracking, splitting wood mixed with footfalls and grumbles. Rigel hummed softly, the oddities of the world melting away in his mind.

He flipped a card from the deck, and for a moment, everything went quiet to him.

A figure stared back, and Rigel after a moment realized it to be the approximation of a Joker card. It certainly didn't match any of the other cards or suits.

Large horns, a too slender figure. Humanoid, but warped.

His gloved fingers traced the artwork slowly, a smile spreading across his face as he took in the form before him. The monster they all were so wary of. It was... beautiful. In the brief moments he glimpsed it. It was terrible and wondrous. Leshin, wendigo, the folklore of different regions came to mind each time he stared at the thing. Wondering which was more accurate to call it.

If it was the former, it was potentially something more akin to a guardian of the forest, if still a monster to be feared. If it was the latter... he wondered if they'd all become cannibals, or victims of them. But they had food, so he couldn't see that becoming a reality. The idea was quickly discarded. They weren't wanting for nourishment and starving. It wasn't ideal food, sure, but it was there.

He frowned, staring at the image of the monster. So what was it then? Was it some other creature he'd not heard of, or merely forgot due to a lack of personal information on the beast and its origins? Or maybe it was nothing of their world or folklores. Maybe it was some conglomerate of fears, mashed together and tangled into something new. Something... wonderful.

His gaze flicked up, and Rigel's breath caught in his throat. The beast, monstrous and barely able to fit in the room, having to lean forward towards him to not ram its skull into the ceiling... stood before him. Near him. His hand twitched, wanting to reach for it. He was transfixed. But. He blinked. And it was gone.

Unease chilled him, making shivers race along his spine, the hair standing on end on his nape and forearms. The smile grew on his face though, twisting his lips as he stared at the empty space where the creature's image was seared into his mind. As close an approximation for a camera as he could get. He glanced back to the cards, the Joker with the looming figure upon its face.

...he wondered if he could keep the cards, hm...
