Issos

The memories that surged through Issos' mind were perhaps simpler than most might have been. Rather than a cacophony of convoluted sound and chaos that could have been overwhelming, his thoughts were casual and almost mild. The images were quieter, more collected, less tinged with the hazy frustration of confusion.

And yet there was still one that stood out; one that seemed to surface a little higher than the others. Issos could remember the first time that Otto had come to his blanket, the first time that he had had the other pad curiously over, blue eyes uncertain, wearing a faint scowl that was probably more out of habit than actual irritation, Issos had determined.

He'd gestured to the wares spread out in front of him, not quite sure why he was a little curious about this particular customer. It wasn't as though he didn't have plenty of people coming to and fro; Issos tended to set up shop wherever there was a high volume of people that passed through. Otto should not have been any different.

Except he was. He'd been interested, fascinated with the jewelry, eyes lighting up. And he'd come back again, the next day. And then the next time that Issos had set up shop, and another time after that as well. Not always routine, not always set; sometimes he didn't arrive, and Issos would suppress the disappointment that always rose, but he still came back.

And eventually, Issos had asked his name.

And eventually, they had begun to talk.

Maybe not anything deep or meaningful or even intense, but enough that there was a certain amount of pleasure in everything, until Issos had started thinking of when Otto would show up next, not if he would show up. Looking forward to them, realizing the small wellspring of joy that was in his chest every time that Otto's hesitant smile touched his lips.

And now -

The precious memory was there, inside of his head.

The cracking was ominous, the scattering of fragments even more so. Jian drew his spear out and approached the figure with caution --

-- only to be drawn into a whiteness, a void, a place that waited and called for something, something. It wanted his memories, and he didn't trust that it would return them, but his mind called up his recollections.

The memory that floated into his mind came unbidden, a memory of softness and of laughter, of introducing the foals to his spoiled, indulged favorite minipet, small hands reaching and patting at soft dark fur. Tiny chirped at the small hands, relaxed in his lap, trusting her owner to keep the small creatures who poked and prodded from poking and prodding too roughly.

The trio was curious but cautious, already aware that poking unfamiliar things could be dangerous. But they reached out nonetheless, interestedly finding out what their parent held, listening to the noises the dark furred little thing made and discovering how very soft her fur was. She batted at small fingers, and small hands snatched back and then returned slowly as they found that this was not a hazard. Soon they were petting the little creature's fur, enjoying her pleased sounds.

They grew bored after a time and wandered off to return to their play, but the introduction had gone well. Jian remained where he was for some time, listening to the foals as they played, smiling to himself and stroking his pet's long dark fur.

There was a noise, a crack that rang through the air as the red shards scattered leaving a figure behind, slowly stretching out, filling a space. It started to distort, warp as everything seemed to feel off, strange to Thias as he tried to reach out, grab hold as his stomach started to wrench itself wanting lose whatever contents it still had. There was a voice, words before completely whiteness took over, as if he was consumed completely by nothing and existences was futile in some way. He didn’t like it, more or less he hated it as silence seemed to stretch on forever it was like nothing but something all around, closing in suffocating him. He wanted to get away, get back to color, to noise, to get back to where Rook was, where the others were.

Rook. He thought about him, he thought about how he had swept him up in his arms holding him above the rest of the famine horsemen in the commons. Thias had snapped at him, but mostly due to fear, the sense of losing control much like the whiteness but yet unlike this Rook at least made him feel safe. He wanted to feel safe again, he wanted to see the long brown feathers that easily wrapped around him as Rook held him close. It was as if they were there, the feathers, a small one drifting easily in the air was it made its way down tangling into his braid.

User Image Mukai was dragging his feet. Quite a lot really, if he kept this up he would need new shoes quite soon. It was a waste really, he had only gotten the shoes fairly recently, and already he could feel the rocks through the souls of the shoes. Maybe it was because he had gotten them from the bargain bin, but feeling pessimistic about it was more Mukai's style, so he did. He managed to lift his head up about a centimeter, to look at the guy in front of him, and his eyes grew another few bags underneath them. Was... were those goggles on the guy in front of him? As if being stabbed in the heart, a memory pierced Mukei's glass heart, essentially paralyzing him. Somehow, the boy managed to turn the memory, so after it pierced him he managed to send it hurling at the boss, managing to do a meager smidgen of damage.

There was nothing.

It seemed like there was nothing, at least, but 9 was not so easily fooled. Even if her thoughts were a bit foggy, and all of the visual cues around her were absent, she knew that she was always very close to something. To someone. There was nothing that could keep them apart - even if she could not see, even if her world was a different one - and knowing that meant that she could not be afraid.

She closed her eyes, preferring the darkness she'd made by herself to the expanse of white presented to her by someone without her consent. She thought of the easiest way to find her, until she could get our of here. She smiled, feeling the warmth return to her, the comfort of an embrace, the prickle of a contented chill across her skin.

'Yeah,' she thought, her grin wide and unashamed. 'That's a good one.'

The void.

Zircon regarded his surroundings or lack thereof with dread. He hated silence, he hated emptiness, he hated nothing. It was the worst kind of apocalypse there was.

"H-hello?! Anyone else out there?" he called. "Or... in here I guess--wherever this is?" There was not so much as an echo. The sound died the moment it left his lips. Zircon clenched his fists, riddled with anxiety. His mind darted from place to place, until he forced himself to settle and think of something to calm his nerves... his initiation as a horseman... And his identity...

Thoughtfully, he removed his goggles from his forehead.

Zircon flopped down on the ground with an exasperated sigh. He had no idea how long he'd been waiting in the quiet abyss but already it had begun to take its toll on him. He fell onto his back with a groan. How he would kill for some food or something.

And with that the boss faded away.

Was it defeated?

Was it satisfied?

It was hard to tell, but the memories remained.
