Finally feeling it might be okay to desummon her weapon, Sherry pulled out the tablet again. She hit re-scan once before looking back at the group.

"It can't mean anything good." It was hard not to stare down the tunnel after the horseman. "I think you're right. They have to be planning something."

Sherry sighed. "Okay. Is everyone okay to move? Shall we head back to the stairs? Or..." She tried the headset again. "Mark?"

"Stairs are blocked," Connor confirmed with a deep breath, still using Melvin as a semi-crutch. "If they're going to kill us, they would have done it already. You-you're right we're probably messengers and I don't want to stand around and wait for them to change their minds."

"There's an exit down this way," Myron suddenly spoke up, wiping their nose several times with their sleeve, "I- I saw it."

Sure enough, the tunnel ended quite rapidly, emerging into sands again. They were on a low incline looking downwards, in the distance they could see what was probably the bare makings of the oasis cliff formation. Sherry's tablet began to ping, a blue signal, marking portal online. It was nearby. It was safe.

Jordan rubbed a hand across his eyes to relieve the stinging from the brightness of the outside light as they emerged. "Messengers," he said under his breath. He didn't like the implications, but there wasn't much he could do about it. They would make their reports, and the reports would be three more data points on the relevant graph, whatever that was. They hadn't found anything to indicate where Allan might be.

He looked briefly back into the darkness of the tunnel, then around at the small group. They were all here, an outcome that was never guaranteed. He'd take it. "Let's get back," he said, louder.

Melvin fished into his pocket to offer Myron some wet wipes because O-M-G your sleeve was NOT a Kleenex. He made a note never to touch the hunter's coat.

Offering his support, he helped Connor along down the path Myron showed them, and was surprised that they had been that close to being outside, not that there couldn't be more worms or a mess of other dangers out there.

"I'll help you to the Infirmary for your leg, Connor. You should maybe see if you didn't catch anything too, Myron, from that cut. Just to be safe." He stated.

Sherry simply frowned at the implications of what being messengers could be. Too many possibilities, all bad.

So it was a great relief to see leave that tunnel. Great relief to see the tablet showing blue. "Finally." Things looked clear.

"Let's hurry," she said.

A Hunter, probably a sentry, was waiting for them when the got a little closer to the portal, and it seemed everyone was just ready to go home. Said Hunter turned around-

- And revealed that his entire face had been hollowed out by insects, still writhing at the edges of a gaping hole where his face should have been. He was still moving, twitching, and then Myron was suddenly gasping too, clutching his neck, his face, shouting about how itchy everything was before he began to claw uncontrollably at it, shouting turning into terrible screaming as his skin began to dissolve into insects-

- "Let it happen," soothed a voice, an unfamiliar voice, female. "His path is different from yours."

From behind them emerged a figure, a horseman, head covered in a deep maroon cloak. In her hands was a deep red crystal, deeper than any colour they had ever seen. There was something about her that exuded power, and then it was impossible to tear their eyes away from the crystal she held: the more they gazed at it, the less of themselves they became.

"You are chosen."

OOC

You have been affected by the red crystal! Feel free to make a post writing a "history" of your character, who now believes they are a horseman (their weapon's voice becomes merged with their own voice).

- Your character will return to Deus now, believing they are a horseman/ serve Medea. This will last until they either hit 0 HP (or less) or are neutralized by another legacy (GM only) OR jut wait out the *IC* 5 days.

Melvin helped Connor across the sand dunes down the sloping sands to the oasis, glad to hear a beep that wasn't a prelude to death from Sherry's monitor. It was hard not to be cautiously optimistic when you were classified as messengers and outside. His mind already was thinking of his report and the Infirmary for Connor when he beamed at the other hunter waiting for them.

But the moment they turned to a hollow gapping maw of blood and bugs, small legs crawling over cartilage and sinew, he knew the illusion of safety was just that.
But it was Myron that twisted his heart. The poor boy had escaped, or had been given the belief of rescue and hope of living another day, and as he screamed and tore chunks and rivets of blood, Melvin watched in shock and cold horror as he tore himself beyond repair.

As he moved to grab Myron's hands, he stilled at a voice and turned in time to feel himself go colder. A cloak. Her. That time on the Tower. Was it?

But before he could react, her voice seeping into his mind, paralyzing his senses, she presented a ruby red gemstone. A witch with a tempting apple. Lush red. Dark red. Was it like the skin of a fruit? Of freshly applied lips? Flushed skin? The dripping red from a hollowed face? Dried blood under cracked fingernails?

All if it floated out somewhere like steam pressed out, and he stood as his true self. Not soft skin, but that of sun-bleached bone and sand in his gut. Of the taming chambers where he would watch the worms feed and grow with fondness but was better suited as a warrior and a scout.Appointed for a serious task. Honored by her.

He looked to his friends and back to her before bowing. "We won't let you down."

Sherry was relieved and happy this mission was coming to an end. Each step they took closer to the little base camp was a little lighter, a little more relaxed.

Until the hunter greeted them with a face full of bugs. Cold horror washed over her as her mind registered this was a trap and they were all going to die. She was still processing that when Myron began to - Oh no. No.

Sherry took two steps back, horrified but she had no time for more than that. Someone was speaking, and then all Sherry could see was red. The most beautiful red Sherry had ever seen. It was deep and it was power contained. She couldn't help but stare. She didn't want to look away.

She blinked, her eyes finally looking away from the crystal and into the face of the one who held it.

"We will not," she said in agreement with her friend.

She'd worked so hard for an assignment like this. Study and training and everything. More than that, they'd worked hard, hadn't they? In a regal gesture, she smoothed her clothing, brushing the sand away as she gave a small bow.

"We will succeed in this." It was her word as a horseman of Conquest.

Jordan had let himself begin to relax as they approached the portal. It was a mistake. It was always a mistake. They were never safe. He recoiled in horror from the faceless, hollowed-out shell that greeted them, and couldn't make himself move to even try to help Myron, because it was too late, bugs, bugs --

He turned against his better judgment, almost against his will, leaving his back to the horrible vision of a human being dissolving into Famine bugs, but the voice compelled him, and the red crystal she held drew his eyes irresistibly.

The truth blossomed in him like a flower, easily silencing the two voices that screamed against it. Why had he been so upset just moments ago at the death of a human? Humans were meant to fear and die. That was all they were good for. He had studied and trained for so long to be judged worthy of a mission like this, and to be trusted with such a task ... He drew himself up proudly and bowed, accepting the honor alongside his friend and his sister. "We will succeed."
