Once Angelina had nailed out most of the party details, she said something about being old and tired, and left the kitchen. Miguel dashed over to Justine's side when the older woman was out of the way, and set a hand on her shoulder. "Fabulous as always, Justine! I'm willing to bet your eyes could make a bear do almost anything." He chuckled lightly. She was a wonderful bear to have in your corner.

[so apparently they only make even sided dice, so 1-3 Humbert and 4-6 is James. Drum roll please!!! And... Humbert wins!! ]

James was about to chuckle himself, but he felt himself being pushed back a lot now, and had to put all his focus into keeping his muscles tensed.

[After this fight, were we going to move onto the King and Queen talking with James and Humbert? Another mini-skip? ]

Justine blushed, though she was sure Miguel would think it was because she was embarrassed. Sometimes his words hurt as much as his actions. "Thank you, Miguel," she said before returning to her work. It was tempting to say more, but it would just confuse Miguel. He would always remain her favorite bear, always, yet she knew she needed to move on for the sake of her heart.

[Yays! Go Humbert!]

Humbert felt the change in momentum and knew his vertical superplex would work. And it did. Exhausted, yet satisfied, Hum successfully lifted James off his feet, into the air, and back on the ground, head first. It was not an easy feat, especially when all Hum could grab on to was fur and fat. Not to mention his injured foot. James really put up a great struggle, just like he was taught. However, experience won over youth, and the cheering of his apprentices indicated just how amazing he was.

Plopping himself down beside James, Humbert breathlessly said, "Why don't we go celebrate later with drinks up on the surface in a nearby human town. My treat."

Miguel smiled at Justine at her thanks, thinking a blush looked pretty on her. Though he didn't know why she was blushing, was it what he said?

[Miguel totally loves her, he just doesn't know it.]

James knew he had lost, and the crash on the ground was like the punctuation to end the fight. He breathed heavily, and turned his head towards his mentor. "I'll take you up on that, Sir. That was a good fight." He smiled as he looked at the younger bears cheering around them. "They certainly though so."

"...and that concludes my report. Sir James and the apprentices that were observing our match can attest for its truthfulness and accuracy," Humbert said before his sovereigns. Copies of his written report were before Their Majesties and within the claws of nobles flanking them. Their older cubs and grandcubs were also present. It was eerie how expressionless their cubs and grandcubs looked. It was like all the ambition they had possessed was drained out of them.

Though it wasn't a wonder why. As Humbert stood in his bear form, he could feel the tension in the air, and Queen Bera's boiling anger. The moment was all the more painful because of the wound he received from James, though he didn't blame his former pupil, but shifting from human form to bear form with an injury only made it worse.

Bera had not expected her youngest to become such a disappointment. Had she made the wrong decision not to let him die on the ice? A worthless cub he was, causing trouble for all around him. He was a shame. She had given him her approval to play with the servants in the kitchen, perhaps he could even make himself useful to her and Nanuq, yet he continued to blunder.

As she contemplated whether she could off her weakest cub, Bera decided to seek her mate's thoughts. "Strength enough to crack mountains beneath his paws and Kingdoms beneath his feet, what are your thoughts on this matter, on this cub of ours?" She did not allow her gaze to even land on him. Rather, Humbert and a few of the other guards caught her eye. They looked rather delicious. She'd feast on them later tonight to mend her foul mood set by her worthless son.

Armel stood before his king and queen, his brothers and sisters, and his nephews along with Their Majesties most favored nobles and the royal guards. The unfortunate center of this gathering was himself. Armel considered himself fortunate that he had made himself presentable to Their Majesties. If they had caught sight of his broken paw, they surely would have no more use for him. Though for now, he was safe because he had decided that, despite the agonizing pain, he would be present in his bear form. Their Majesties preferred it, and to disappoint them was to shame them. But my existence is shame enough, isn't it? Armel feared he would be useless no matter how hard he exerted himself.

Annabelle sighed as she waited with her cubs for Melly to return from the throne room. Would Their Majesties unjustly punish Melly, or would they ignore him like always? Did they even remember they had a son as sweet as Melly? No, they wouldn't know the sound of his laughter, let alone the light of his smile. Annabelle still remembered when she found Melly bloody and near death, he was so small. She decided to nurse him because he was so small and needed good nourishment. To her, he was as good as hers. Now, he was a vibrant young bear, like her three cubs.

And now he was facing Their Majesties because Sir Humbert had a vendetta against her little Melly. When she got the chance, Annabelle would break that guard, body, pride, and all.

Justine watched as her mother's claws raked the ice floor, her silent anger boiling over. She didn't know what her mother was thinking, but she was agitated. Ever since Melly sawed off his own cast and shifted into his bear form. Her mother and Dr. Sammi were beyond upset. Melly had been such agony when he returned to his bear form. She wanted to cry watching him writhe in pain.
"He'll be fine, won't he, Mama?" Collette asked.
But their mother just shook her head.
"I do not know, but I pray the First will show mercy upon Melly."

[Miguel may love her, but Justine will give up on him if he doesn't realize it.]

Unlike his wife who was pointedly not looking down on their youngest cub, Nanuq stared pure fury and disgust down at Armel. His voice, however, held none of the fury on his face, if anything it was a bit cold. "I feel as though we must have made a grave error in allowing him to play around with the lesser bears," he replied, one of his big paws raking the ground, speaking as if he son wasn't present in the room. "He is a Prince, whether he behaves it or not, and he is of our blood. When a bear of our bloodline is seen in the company of the common bears, playing around as they allow their cubs to do, it tarnishes our reputation."

He turned his big heads towards his more acceptable children and grandchildren. "This is the way our cubs were meant to be raised, and this is the example I expect any blood of mine to set. We are not common." That was meant for his son, though spoken while still not looking at him. And the next again for his mate. "I think, to teach Armel a lesson he won't forget, to show him how displeased we are, it would perhaps be more of a visual lesson if we punish one of his kitchen friends. What do you say?"

The King smiled, knowing just the cub it would be. A parentless kitchen cub, he had in fact fathered himself, and who's common mother had died in childbirth. He knew for a fact this cub was a friend of Armel's, and they had a similar appearance as well, so the lesson would be more clear, and so the King could vent his angry at his son without laying a paw on him. He wouldn't make a show of hurting his own, unless for a serious reason. The blood must be seen as strong.

Miguel paced back and forth, back and forth, fretting over Melly. He hoped they wouldn't hurt him.

James had to admit the lack of love the King and Queen showed towards their cub was unsettling. But he did agree with their concerns. Prince Armel had never behaved as he should, and when bears didn't fall into the role they were meant to play, kingdoms could fall to ruin. He hoped the Prince would see sense. A royal family member did not belong in the kitchen, making food and serving it to other bears.

Arcadius hoped he would get to see some bloodshed. If that runt had been his own son, especially with so many other older and well trained heirs, he would grab him by the neck with his teeth, and shake him until he snapped.

"My king, I must agree with you." Bera could not have agreed more with Nanuq; it was a mistake to allow their son to dabble among the rabble. In truth, she was surprised Nanuq had the mental capacity to think up such an appropriate punishment for their son, but it was a pleasant surprise. Even males could think if they put effort into it. And Armel had indeed tarnished their reputation with his frolicking among the servants. To think he interfered with the training of the new generation of guards meant to protect her and Nanuq. Only a punishment such as this was appropriate enough for the gravity of Armel's actions.

Now, for the first time, Bera stared down at her cub, irritated that he could only keep his head down while the proceedings occurred. Snapping at him, Bera commanded him to speak. "Do you have any comments you wish to impart on your sovereigns before the punishments proceed?" At best, he could beg for forgiveness and behave like her puppet once more.

Yet this cub of hers was full of surprises, and not the pleasant variety.

Armel lifted his head, his facial expression set as ice and his gaze as cold. As His Majesty spoke, a thousand and one thoughts dashed through his mind. The majority were to break down and cry in front of the court, but the minority, though tiny, pushed through. He needed to prevent harm to himself—No. He needed to protect the servants. They treated him well, but that was due to his social status, right? But what Annabelle did for him, nursing him when he was weak. What they all did, wasn't that beyond servitude? He didn't understand it well, let alone himself, but he feared harm to them. They did not deserve to be punished. It was wrong of Their Majesties to harm the servants—wait, Their Majesties were wrong? No, no, no. They couldn't be wrong, or else he'd be dead. Yet the feeling that he was correct and they were wrong couldn't cease. It kept crawling its way up his throat.

This was his burden to bear. Armel understood it. He would invoke as much anger against him as possible so he could redirect Their Majesties' intentions from the servants to himself. It was dangerous, reckless, and fool-hardy, but it was fine, right? Because, for the entire day, that was how he had acted. It would be fine in the end. The worst thing they could do was completely abandon him. Killing him would be a blessing.

Plus, if Their Majesties saw how reckless he was, they would understand how serious he was about serving them. Armel was willing to sacrifice himself in the name of servitude toward Their Majesties. With this one act of disobedience, he was more than willing to obey and perform every command they gave.

So Armel humbly bowed his head to Their Majesties before once more lifting it to coolly gaze at them and the court. He pretended that his heart wasn't pounding—he even managed to settle it down so he could speak—or that all eyes were with him. He just spoke, as Her Majesty commanded him.
"I will accept whatever punishments Your Majesties' command. However, I wish to correct Your Majesties on one matter concerning the kitchen servants: None of them are my 'friends'.

"Royals and servants cannot be 'friends' by principle. They are simply tools for Your Majesties, just as I am, but they matter far less. Any 'friendliness' exhibited by them is due to their positions as tools for the crown. Any and all interactions with them is a play. We all play our parts, and they pray they will live to see dawn."
Armel watched as Her Majesty's eyebrow twitched.
But it was Dov who spoke first.
"Is this your way of protecting the servants, baby brother? You, who can't even behave as a proper polar bear should?" The disdain on his face was as evident as Gerben and Otso reigning in their mockery of him.
"I'm protecting them just as much as your mistresses protect their cubs by you from your drunkenness, which is to say, not at all." At this retort, Nita had allowed a small snicker escape. Snæbjörn and Sapata just stared at their paws while their husbands stared at him with disapproval that would match his rising anxiety. "Aside from that, what does it mean to behave as a proper polar bear? Kill seals and scavenge the garbage cans of humans? Or do you mean behaving as the son of the strongest king and queen our kingdom has known? Of course, you could mean simply being a tail-chaser such as yourself, First Prince Dov.

"In the end, I am simply playing with the servants as I master a useful skill to be a useful tool."

"Why you insolent little—"
Then Her Majesty finally spoke, cutting off whatever Dov intended to say. "You were playing, Armel? Is that so? Interesting...

"Then what say you, my son, regarding this morning's disaster?"
Her Majesty's gaze burned cold and her words pierced his heart. She wanted him deceased, he could feel it.
Yet he didn't try to save himself. Stupidly, he continued to bury himself in his words.
"I was playing the part of the little prince seeking amusement in all its forms among the servants. Of course, I had not expected to return to the training cavern—not after Sir Humbert expressed his great distress over my presence in it with which to begin.

"However, it was unfortunate that the apprentice who escorted me found himself in harm's way in the kitchen, like myself in the training cavern. He was not used to being in the kitchen and did not know its dangers. The same can be said of myself. I am not used to the training cavern, so it was expected I may slip up, so to speak."
Armel felt his heart slam against his rib cage over and over again. He thought he had a control over its beating, but feeling Her Majesty's hatred of him made him want to disappear. It was a wonder how he remained cold and impassive, even haughty, when he spoke. It took so much effort to speak and to keep his cold expression. It was preferable over the cold anger bubbling over on Her Majesty's face.

Then, to seal his fate, Armel informed Their Majesties of one tiny bit of information that would surely enrage them.
"Aside from all that, regardless of which servant is punished, I intend to finish my training as an apprentice chief. Only the descendant of Your Majesties can ensure your meals are top quality and unique to your individual tastes." At that instance, Her Majesty roared at him, causing his family and some nobles to do a little jump in surprise.

Humbert debated over the prince. Either His Royal Highness was incredibly insane or incredibly brave. Hum doubted he could keep that cold expression on his face when speaking to Their Majesties, yet the prince did it without a hitch. And then came the stubbornness His Highness kept exhibiting. Hum despised the prince even more for it. Where was this daring courage and those arrogant words when His Highness first came to the training grounds? This reckless prince picked his battles in the worst of ways. If Her Majesty didn't order for his immediate execution now, he would be surprised. It would take a miracle to save Prince Armel.

Annabelle and her cubs jumped at the sudden roar from within the walls of the royal court. Queen Bera was furious. Someone must have angered her, and Annabelle feared Melly would pay the price. Quickly, she told her cubs to remain where they were while she tried to gain access into the court, but all the posted guards denied her. Why couldn't she go in to see Melly? He was as much her son as any of her cubs? Annabelle needed to protect him. She was his mother, more so than Queen Bera would ever be. He would not walk out of the court alive.

Justine felt her heart sink further and further into the pit of her stomach once Queen Bera's furious roar resounded down the halls. Melly would surely die. Where was Miguel when she needed him? If he was here, she could calm the wild beating of her heart.

Strolling down the ice halls, flanked by her all-female guards and her two daughters while several servants scattered about, Eden listened to the whispering of her arrival by the servants who were sure to inform her parents of her arrival.

Eden came upon a young male passing back and forth like a human male in old movies waiting to learn the gender of his offspring. It was pathetic, normally. However, one look at this bear, the spitting image of her father, and she knew he was not of her mother. Her sixth sense told her something was amidst in the kingdom. "Male, what troubles you? Speak now and speak quickly. Your princess commands it." Eden wished to address herself as his sister, but she knew such words would only add trouble to them both. To acknowledge an illegitimate cub as her brethren meant inflicting the wrath of her parents upon herself. They were troublesome and irritating, so she tended to avoid them as much as possible while giving them as much trouble as she could.

[Enter Eden, the number one most troublesome cub of the king and queen. You gotta love her.]

Nanuq thought at the very least his son could put on a good show, when he wanted to, and stick his muzzle in the air like noble blood. But directed at himself and Bera, he did not find it amusing in the slightest. His thoughts were punctuated with his mate's loud roar in anger, and rightly so. He was telling them what he was going to do?

"Well either way son," he made the title sound like a sneer, "the kitchen staff should be punished for being too familiar with you. Making an example of one of them should teach the others as well. As for you, perhaps you should be punished as well." He turned to look at Bera. "I leave our unruly child to you, and his punishment, as cub rearing is a female's job." Plus he was counting on Bera's current mood to be creative with the punishment.

Looking to his side, he found the bear he was looking for next. "Arcadius, I have a task for you. Go to the kitchen and fetch for me a young serving boy there by the name if Miguel and bring him here. If he resists, you may use force." He enjoyed watching Arcadius's face twist at being ordered to do a servant's task, but he nodded and vanished from the room.

Miguel paced around the kitchen more until he heard a bear speak to him. With a shock, he quickly bowed to Eden and was about to reply, when a loud grumble called his name. Seeing a Noble he loathed didn't stop him from making a perfect bow of his head. "Lord Arcadius, do you require something to eat?"

"No, come with me. The King wants to see you, and unfortunately Princess Eden, his claim trumps yours." Why was there a creepy grin accompanying those words? Miguel felt chills up his spine, but he nodded again, and with a last look at Arcadius, he accompanied the bear out of the kitchen all the way into the large audience room, filled with nobles and nearly all of the royal family.

James waited with watchful eyes for any orders from the King of Queen. He didn't believe, at least in the case of the kitchen servant, that this was really just. But who was he to question the King?

Arcadius paused as they reached the room. "I brought him, Your Majesties." He didn't mention that their troublesome daughter Eden had been there. No need to flare up their tempers.

Nanuq looked with emotionless eyes at the younger bear that looked so much like Armel and himself, barely any of his mother in him. "You have been called here today to be punished for improper behaviors towards Prince Armel. As you are taking the punishment for everyone in the Kitchens, the punishment will be two Claw lashes. Arcadius will handle the lashes, James hold him down to see he doesn't move." He waved a paw, inviting them to begin.

James moved to hold the younger bear down, surprised by how big he was. Built like a nobel bear, he would have made a good guard when he grew up, and he looked like the king. He pressed down with his paws on Miguel's shoulder and back leg, keeping him in place, as Arcadius circled viciously.

Miguel laid rigid with fear. But he would not cry out, or whimper, or plead. That would frighten Melly more then he was already. He seethed with anger at the same time, for the King and Queen. How they treated their son and their people was despicable. To punish their son for having friends, getting to know his people and learning a skill, and to punish Miguel on behalf of everyone in the kitchen. Though he would rather it be him then anyone else... then Justine.

The first time Arcadius's claws raked down his back, Miguel's stomach lurched with the pain and his eyes bulged, feeling liquid blood running down the fur on his back. He tried to breath through his nose evenly, knowing the neck one would be worse. The second time as much a he had vowed to, he couldn't remain 100% silent, breath hissed through his clamped teeth and his stomach rolled with nausea at the pain.

James got off his quickly, with a look of disgust. Clearly even the Kings guard didn't approve of what they had been ordered to do. He could hear Arcadius lapping the blood from off his claws. As for himself, he couldn't bring himself to move, let alone stand. He could still feel his blood flowing, and even the movement of his breath would sickening.

As all of her mother's attempts at rescuing Melly fizzled, Justine noticed a noble bear, Lord Arcadius, emerge and make his way down one of the halls. She did not know where he was going, and she didn't care to know because Melly was in danger. But try as she might, nothing could be done to help Melly.

Just as she was wallowing in her sorrow, Justine saw Lord Arcadius had returned, with Miguel. "No." Barely a whisper, but it was loud enough for Annabelle to understand Justine's intention. She tried to fight against her mother, but Annabelle was too strong of a bear to resist.

Armel stared up at His Majesty when spoke, his gaze cold and unfeeling despite his rising panic. King Nanuq was the strongest and most powerful bear in the kingdom. He could defeat several enemies without exerting effort.

His Majesty was cruel. He was vicious. He was malicious. He was unyielding. Nothing he did could be challenged.

Yet he was wrong. Miguel and the servants had done nothing wrong. His Majesty just wished to take out his anger on Miguel because Miguel was his spitting image. It was a message to Armel about his behavior.
I'll grow strong and protect them, he thought as two guards suddenly flanked him and forced him to watch as Miguel's punishment began.

Glancing over to Her Majesty—because looking at Miguel was too painful—he saw her icy glare on him.

Humbert had seen Queen Bera's subtle signal to flank Prince Armel when the lashings began. He didn't understand what Her Majesty thought would happen when the lashings began. His Highness couldn't stop the lashings even if he wanted to, and he'd lose his tongue if he spoke any more than he already had.

Besides, who wished to interfere with the lashings when the better option was to turn away from them? Hum could hardly look in the general direction of the kitchen cub, Miguel, when Lord Arcadius racked his claws down the young bear's back. This isn't justice. That cub isn't a threat to them. Not even King Orson or Queen Ursula were so cruel. Compared to their daughter and her mate, they were merciful.

Hum had almost blocked out the scene before him when Queen Bera's voice punctured the silent court.

"Take that cub up to the surface. See if he survives the night," Bera ordered as she took a single step forward, toward her rebellious son. "As for you, my son, you will also spend the night on the surface as the winter storms rage on. In your human form. If you survive the night, I will allow this incident to be forgiven. Now, go." She spared not a single glance behind her before she left the court. Nothing in the room held her interest anymore. She wished to spend the night away from her troublesome cubs and the nobles.

Miguel turned to look at Melly as he heard Queen Bera's orders. In his human form...he'll freeze... He felt himself being dragged along the icy corridors, though he wasn't really aware of what was going on. He just kept praying that he and Melly would at least be put up in the same location. That way Melly could help stop his bleeding, and Miguel could offer his bear body and fur to keep his friend warm from the biting cold. That way, maybe they'd both survive them.

He only knew he had reached the outdoors when the blood running down his back more slowly now felt cold, not warm. He could faintly see someone... he thought it might be James...looking down at him.

"You did not deserve what you got. I hope you survive." James said to Miguel as he lowered him onto the ice. The young bear had looked so big and strong when he had seen him first today. Now he seemed young and small and broken. With proper care, he could survive his wounds, but left bleeding out in the freezing air, James knew he may never see this bear again. "That was not justice."

With a quick look around to see he was the last guard there, he piled some snow up in front of Miguel with his paws. It would at least take the bite of the wind off of him some. Then James followed the others inside.

Nanuq sat back and watched as his wife took her turn at deciding a punishment. He was right to leave her to decide, she had come up with something very pleasing to him. He watched the kitchen servant and his son be taken out with little expression on his face, aside from a chill in his eyes. "I am tired now, council is dismissed." He waved a hand dismissively, and expected they leave.
PostPosted: Tue Mar 22, 2016 6:15 pm

Justine stopped struggling against her mother's grasp when the court doors opened, and it wasn't due to relief. She was frozen in fear when she saw Miguel dragged out of the cavern, his back bloody and still bleeding. Her gaze was glued on the blood trail left from him being dragged away, to where, she did not know until he was gone, out of sight. The nobles were twittering about the punishments King Nanuq and Queen Bera had inflicted upon both Miguel and Melly.

Anger welled up inside her chest, making it painfully obvious to her that she would be doing something rash and irresponsible in a heartbeat and a half if her mother didn't catch her first.

And she didn't.

Justine was practically flying down the hallway, following the blood trail that stained the snow. She followed it up to the surface where a snowstorm bellowed like Queen Bera. Not so far from the entrance, she spotted where the blood trail ended. "Miguel!" She bellowed and charged over to him, her heart pounding in fear. Could he have bled out already? No, it was too soon. "Miguel..." she called his name as she shoved her muzzle into his neck, trying to feel for a pulse. Yes, a pulse. He was alive. "Miguel, stay with me...Miguel..."

Humbert and several guards escorted Prince Armel to the surface, taking a path in the opposite direction of where the kitchen cub was taken. He didn't need an order to understand that Queen Bera wanted the two cubs, half-brothers he was sure, separated. They would survive without the help of the other. Wasn't that entire circus in the court meant to send that message? No one's cubs were safe, especially those begotten by the king with other females.

Hum didn't agree with this punishment. It was cruel and wrong. And, despite how much he hated Prince Armel, he didn't wish for the prince to die in the cold in his human form. It was pathetic. At the very least, he wanted to deliver him to Dr. Sammi first so she could get a cast back on Prince Armel's hand and some warm clothes. At least the prince could survive a little while with those things, at least he wouldn't be in so much pain. However, it would not be possible. He had not included the prince's broken hand in his report, having thought Prince Armel would come in his human form to court, with his cast on, to further emphasize his point about the prince playing servant without having to state it, but Prince Armel didn't.

Now, even if Hum did take him to Dr. Sammi, the guards who flanked the prince would not allow it. They were too loyal to Queen Bera. They either had daughters or sisters who were mistresses to the queen's family, or enjoyed ravaging her body at her command. So, without other options, he took the prince to the surface and forced himself not to grimace as the young prince took on his human shape. Hum could see the prince wanted to cry out, it was impossible to pretend something didn't hurt, but only a small whine escaped.

And so did Humbert, far away from the prince who lied in the snow during the snowstorm, nude and weak.

Armel sat in the cold, watching his toes slowly turn blue and his broken hand turning red, swollen from all the changes done to it. At some point, he did lose consciousness, probably within the first five minutes of his punishment, but he woke up a minute or two later. "I can't die now," he grumbled to himself as he hugged his legs close.

"Of course now," Eden said to her little brother as she and her cubs surrounded him. It had been awhile since she saw a brother of hers turn blue like this. The last time she saw that was when she was being raised on the ice by her mother. Now, that brother did die on the ice because that was how their mother worked. She'd kill off at least one cub because she thought it made her litter stronger. Such foolishness. Eden started out with three brothers in her litter and ended up with the two worst ones by the end.

Though she wouldn't let this brother die. Glancing behind her, Eden signaled to Dr. Sammi to help Miguel as that massive she-bear, Annabelle, called the half-brother she had seen earlier. Eden and her daughters would provide warmth for this brother of hers. "You may not know me, Sunshine, but I'm—"

"Eden. Petal blossoms fall before her paws." Eden stared at her brother, surprised how he could still speak despite his current state.
If it wasn't for how impressed she was, Eden would be mad at her brother. "Yes, and these two are Marigold fields that bloom in the height of summer and Tulip petals in her fur. Their human names are simply Marigold and Tulip. I don't like the human names nobles give their cubs," she said as she and her daughters used themselves as a shield against the snow and harsh winds of the storm for her brother. They would keep him warm as the storm raged on; and Dr. Sammi would patch up Miguel so he could survive the night as well.

Lounging in her chambers and sipping on fine wine, Bera tried to forget her embarrassment of a son. And seeing Nanuq's b*****d son didn't help in lessening Bera's temper. Her husband was allowed to beget as many cubs as he wanted with whomever he wanted, but she did not want to see them. They were an embarrassment to her, especially those who were obviously his cubs.

Downing the last of her wine, Bera called for Sir Humbert and Sir Eetu to be summoned to her chambers. She wished for them to entertain her because they were her favorite and most loyal guards. But, if she did feel like it, she would invite them into her bed.

Miguel opened his eyes, and used his nose to scent who the lovely voice calling out to him belonged to. He was so tired... but that was a voice he knew, and he would come whenever she called. "Justine?" He snuggles against her warmth instinctually, though a momentary worry of getting blood on her pretty fur troubled him before it vanished. "I'll stay for you...Justine...so pretty." Absently he inhaled her scent more deeply, taking comfort from her. If he had even half her strength, this would be nothing. He would survive.

"You-you shouldn't be out here, you'll get in trouble." His face shifted to worry. "We can't have that, if they hurt you- aghhh!" He had tensed his muscles as a reaction to thinking she was in danger, and felt it tear at his wound. He quickly relaxed, and was confused about what he had been doing. Pain was making him delirious. "I'm glad you're here... with me... I need you." He nuzzled her again. "Love you..." He closed his eyes, laying his head on her soft fur.

James paced around, heading back to the guard rounds he had been distracted from. They would keep his mind of the slight thoughts troubling him. What had happened wasn't right. By he was loyal, and would do his job.

Nanuq still sat in his chair, but he was alone now aside from servants, which was as good as alone. He stared angrily at the smear of blood left on the ground, while the servants dutifully cleaned it up, so it wouldn't mar his floors. His son had surely learned now. And even if he had not, his little friends should fear the sight of him now, afraid of being punished further. And as for that cub in particular, he was likely good as dead.

Abigail listened to Arcadius with growing disgust and irritation. She growled every time his voice got too loud or he got too close to her sleeping daughter -she refused to think that Amaya was theirs- as a warning, but stayed where she laid so as to not disturb her.

Arcadius seemed to think it had been justice and a fine joke, what had happened to those poor cubs. Punished for having friends, it was despicable. If she didn't have her Amaya to worry about, she would sneak out onto the ice to see if she could help. But as much as it hurt her to not try to help, but Amaya was her first priority.

So she sat and listened, and cringed inside.

[Look what I found!]

Justine sighed, relieved Miguel was still conscious, though he was speaking nonsense. Not that she minded the nonsense. If he lived to see tomorrow, she'd used his nonsense to tease him for the next several days. Plus, who didn't like being called pretty by the sweetest bear in the kingdom? But she wouldn't tell Miguel that because he wouldn't believe it anyways. He wouldn't understand what she meant by most favorite.

So, instead of arguing with him about things like trouble and punishments, Justine focused on helping Miguel, which began by gently pushing him down so not to aggravate his wounds and shushing him when he tried to protest her presence. If she gave two sticks about getting in trouble, then she would have stayed below the snow and ice, protected from the winter storm. But she didn't. She was here, with him, in this awful blizzard because he was her favorite bear and he needed help. "I love you, too, Miguel. Everyone does, so don't talk like this is your last day on Earth," she said, returning his nuzzle with one of her own. She didn't know how to help him except for cleaning his wounds of blood, but she had no bandages or antiseptics for his injuries either. And then she had Melly to worry about because he was out in the cold, too, and in his human form to boot. "When you survive, we should throw you a party, too. 'Congrats on not dying.' How does that sound?" she said, her muzzle brushing his ear so he could hear her above the roar of the wind.

[ That's really cool! And it mentions Nanuq, that's cool! ]

Miguel shook his head, knowing she was not understanding, but not sure how to say. His head felt like it was full of snow. "No, different then everyone. I love you more." He muttered, crawling closer to her warm fur, and looking into her beautiful eyes. They were full of strength and determination that confronted him. If Justine said he would live, he would. She was always right.

He flinched as she licked his wounds clean, but the icy wind quickly numbed the pain when she was done. "A party. Would you like a party?" He asked her. "If you want it, I want it. You should have everything you want." He could hear her beautiful voice in his ear, and although he knew he was not going to die, he felt he could have died happy. "I want to give you the things you want... I'm in love with you." The last came out as a hushed whisper, but something told him it was important, so he said it louder. "I'm in love with... Justine..." He lost his grip on consciousness, and fell into a deep sleep.

[I thought it tied in nicely to the role play and gave some basis for the polar bear kingdom's history.]

Justine strained her ears to catch Miguel's muttering because he obviously thought she didn't understand him. And he was right, she didn't understand him. She knew Miguel was delirious from his injuries, though she thought it was more so from the blood-loss itself. He was talking nonsense because never had he shown he loved her more than the rest of his adoptive family. He couldn't love her more than everyone else.

So she ignored his deliriousness and continued to groom his injuries. He was talking crazy. Justine just couldn't believe him. She couldn't believe a word he said to her. He wanted whatever she wanted. Where had those words been before? When had those so-called feelings developed? If she wasn't so upset with him, she would have immediately noticed Miguel passing out from his injuries.

But she didn't because she was beyond upset. Justine felt her heart breaking and reforming over and over again. Miguel was in love with her. It only took him a near-death experience to realize it, but he didn't realize her feelings. He never would, would he? After all, he was everyone's brother and son, but no one's special bear. Justine felt her chest squeeze with pain as realization truly dawned on her. Miguel wouldn't remember this moment. To him, it would be a dream, or he just wouldn't remember it ever happened.

Internally, Justined mourned her broken heart. She loved Miguel. He was her most favorite bear in the kingdom, but he never realized her feelings for him and never would. He was too kind and too dense to see what was right in front of him.

Dr. Sammi stared down at the two young bears in front of her, having overheard the conversation, more or less through the roaring blizzard. Love was a pain in the a**. She couldn't remember a time when love even mattered, but still, some cubs continued to love.

Sighing, Sammi wanted to get out of this blizzard as soon as possible. She motioned for the guards Eden had given her and had them form a wall around the two young bears and herself. Their massive forms blocked out most of the wind and some of the snow, giving her ample room to work. She didn't hesitate in shoving the female cub, Justine, away from the male cub, Miguel. She dimly remembered these were Prince Armel's two servant-toys.

Sammi didn't care for friendship, or believed in it. Her feelings on it was similar to that with those on love. It didn't exist. However, she was sure Justine wouldn't agree with her, not by the way she resisted being separated from Miguel, but it didn't matter what the cub wanted. Sammi was the one with the tools to save Miguel's life. She was the one surrounded by the toughest she-bears in the kingdom. She was the one who would get her way. And she did get it. One of the guards expelled Justine from the wall of guards and escorted her back below the snow; Sammi shaved the fur around Miguel's wounds with a battery-powered clippers designed for polar bear fur, then she added antiseptics to his wounds before wrapping them up in bandages. If he lived through the night, she could give him some iron supplements and fluids to help his recovery. Other than that, Miguel was on his own.

Once she was done, Sammi headed below the snow and ice, leaving the guards behind. She hated trudging through the blizzard in her human form. She hated being on the surface to begin with, tending to two fools. If Prince Armel survived the night, she'd have to remake his cast and give him plenty of pain medication. She should have stayed below the ice, but she didn't want Eden wrecking her infirmary like the last time she didn't get her way. All the royals were spoiled. Each and every single one of them. None were an exception.

[Sure, works for me. I hope you liked Dr. Sammi.]

[ I do like her, but I feel sad for her too. ]

[ ~Time Skip~ ]

Miguel opened his eyes, blinking in the brightness. He felt stiff, as though he had been laying still for a long time. He tried to roll over to see his surroundings better, and groaned. Not only were his muscles tight and bunched, but his entire back stung, as did the memories that flooded his mind. He remembered everything up until the first rake with the claws on his back, and then everything was so fuzzy, it was like wading through mud. Had Justine been there when we was hurt?

"Where...where am I?" He muttered. "Is anyone here?"
