With that, the expedition to free Ryuuichi was gone, and Sara was left alone with their guests for the first time since this whole event had begun. In fact, it was the first time she hadn't been in a crowd for...well, for quite some time. It was unnerving now to not be surrounde by angry or excited students. The horrid hybrids had retreated to a table of their own and seemed to have settled down. She didn't trust them at all. Or like them. She really had no trouble with hybrids in general, really--she'd met some quite nice ones since attending school here. There had been precious few at home, but in all, she was pleased with the quality of interactions she'd had with all races. It was mere coincidence that the dissenters here had all been hybrids. Or perhaps it wasn't. She pushed it from her mind--they were dissenters. Whether or not that stemmed from dissatisfaction with their own personal histories was not hers to decide or to determine.
She had stayed behind not because she doubted the veracity of the Grimms, nor because she did not think that Ryuuichi deserve help--she believed, quite solidly, that he did. But she had stayed behind because she thought that Myles and Athena should not be left alone in an environment in which they had no experience or aid. They might need a guide still. And besides, she worried still that Athena might have support.
Myles's request was...strange...but she placed the palm of her hand on the pearl nonetheless.
Her hand jerked away from the pearl almost instantly--an involuntary action, as though she had just touched a hot stove. She turned her trembling fingers towards herself, staring at the palm. There was no mark--not that she had expected one. She reached out again and touched it. This time her hand did not jerk away--but other than that, the experience was the same.
The feeling of her father's arms around her; Saram, her parent, brushing her hair; them holding hands and drawing in tight as another autumn evening crept in. The tremble in Grandpa's voice when he talked about Grandma. Daydreams and fantasies, and they all flashed by in an instant and eternity. She let her hand fall from the pearl, slowly and gently this time. She looked up at Myles through tear-brimmed eyes.
That was why Ryuuichi leaned on the cane so much. Not for the support for his knee, but for the support for his heart...
"Was...was that the, um, pearl that...Ryuuichi gave...his Elena...?" She sniffed and wiped her eyes. "Dumb question, Ah know..."

Hazel eyes watched the Baphomet intently. He knew she wouldn't understand his request, but if he told her why he wanted her to touch it, she might not do it, or the impressions she got would be muddled. He wanted her true, honest, unbiased impression, and the only way to do that was just to let her experience it first hand of what the pearl, or really any pearl given in Nixie courtship was capable of doing.
The sudden initial jerk didn't surprise him and he kept his face neutral while she contemplated what had just happened before she touched the pearl again, and let it linger for a moment before letting it drop away. He already knew from her expression that she understood what she'd just encountered.
He nodded firmly at her question. "Yeah. It is." he shook his head. "The only dumb questions are the ones you never ask." he paused and then cleared his throat. "I know...Athena doesn't know if that's her mom...but maybe...if it is, and she touched the pearl...maybe...maybe she'd remember all the years they were together before she disappeared," he sighed. "It might not change much, but maybe she'd listen to Ryuuichi...Not a great plan but...might work?" he said pathetic puppy eyes, and tail swish.

"Ah lahk that sayin'," she said slowly. "D'you mahnd if Ah repeat it?" She gazed at the pearl. Things were starting to make sense. Pearls could be imbued, then? She wondered if they were involved in the alchemy of soul stones--what did they provide? Did they retain memories, perhaps, or provide strength? For the first time she was wondering about that. Alchemy had never interested her before, and soul stones had always just been soul stones. She pushed the thoughts out of her head. She didn't have time for them today. She already had so much on her mind...
"Ah think it's worth a trah, Mahles," she said quietly. "It could be that the jolt it gives her is way more powerful, too--since it was hers, after all. She musta been able to imbue it with her own feelin's 'bout Ryuuichi when she accepted it from him, rahght? Or...would thata made it a soul stone?" She shook her head. "Just answer me that question later, 'kay? We got work t'do, obviously. Lahk, how do we make Elena take the pearl?"
Inspiration struck her. "We could tell her that Ryuuichi needs his cane, offer it to her pearl first so that she's forced t'touch it in order to take it t'give to him!" Her cheeks flushed and she reached out to grab Myles and Athena's hands. "We should go now, before the other kids completely antagonahz her!"Lady Argentum Draconis My money's on strength. Nacre is some powerful stuff.

Myles hugged Athena, trying to get her to settle a bit more. This might not work if they didn't work together after all.
"It should contain her memories of him, yes. I think after a certain point it becomes a collective for both halves of the couples memories, but I'm not entirely sure, it's kind of one of those things, they tell you more about once you're actually ready to do it." he bit his lower lip, his ear twitched as she offered up her thoughts on how to get Elena to touch the pearl. "That's what I was thinking actually." he said.
He then nodded and bounced to his feet, pulling Athena along with him. "Come on, we gotta go help save your dad." he knew Athena wasn't really in any shape to face her parent, but he couldn't leave her alone, so she'd have to go with them to go test the older Nixie woman.
He took one of Sara's hands, tucked the staff into his shirt and made sure it wouldn't fall, then took Athena's hand and dragged her and the Bapho along. If anyone could find them all, it was him.

Sara nodded. It sounded like a very special thing. She...actually really liked the idea of having a stone imbued with the feelings of young love. "Ah think that sounds lahk a beautiful start to a relationship," she murmured. "Ah wonder if anyone could learn how t' do it. But, um, Ah guess we should get t' work first." She ignored, rather pointedly, the possibility that it didn't work. No, it had to work. If nothing else, they had to make it work. She followed Athena and Myles to their feet, brushed off her jeans and shirt, and marched along behind them, her hooves making loud clacks against the floor.
"Ah'm behand y'all all the way," she said. "Just lead the way." She gave Myles's hand a squeeze and followed along, her heart pounding hard in her chest.
