Chel had moved until Jack's cheek was resting on her chest and she found herself in the odd position of rocking a 6'7 man as though he was an infant.

Yet she found it infinite times more comforting than being held, because it made her feel like it was her job to fix and to console and to be the one to blame.

Her thumbs stroked down his hair along his neck and she kept her palms flat to touch as much of him as she could.

They stayed like that for some time, but every cry ran out of steam and every clinging hug eventually became a weary grasp. "There's one good thing I can think of." But through cracked lips and sniffling it didn't sound all that good.

Unwilling to lift his face completely off yet so fresh from the embarrassing breakdown, Jack merely turned it so that he could breathe easier and sniffled. "Mm," was all he could manage, too tired for even the question mark to be added.

Somehow she was okay letting Jack stay there as long as he needed. They could've never left the house and she would have been okay rotting away here.

"I won the bet," she mumbled into his hair. They both needed a shower, but Chel couldn't be bothered to care about hygiene at the moment.

She also knew her win was hollow; no bet or force on Earth was going to make Jack buy the ring any faster. But it was something to find humor in, a hollow shell to carry their bodies to.

For another stretch of time he rested his head and regulated his breathing and tried not to think too much about the gem embedded in her skin, its smoothness unnatural and cold next to Chel's skin and being. "Lighthouse blew up," he mumbled as a reminder, but it sounded too much like later, like he was trying to excuse himself. In reality, now he wished he had just gone and gotten something before. He should have. He didn't want to be Ian and Shiloh, treating it like some long drawn out process--like this was normal, like they had the guarantee of time.

"As soon as we're back online," he promised. If they even let him. He wondered just how public their fight had been, if they would deny him even leave access just based on suspicion or allow him to move still under that invisible but close watch. Or if at some point he'd have to wear the bracelet.

The urgency should have pleased her, but all it did was bring to mind more ifs. If they made it off the island. If they could find the time to get married. If it even mattered.

"You okay now?" she asked instead. "Not rushin'." The opposite really.

"Mm." He finally straightened up and rubbed at his face, a scowl partially forming at himself for the display this, as if being angry with himself was the solution to getting over this quicker. At least Owain was quiet. "Not gonna cry like a retard anymore, no. You?"

"Probably gonna cry more," she told him, somewhat offput by him moving away. When you cried it never really went away instantly; it always lingered in puffy eyelids and red cheeks for hours afterwards.

They'd been in the house a great deal of time and it prompted her to say, "You work on the rings and your important people clone business." Trying to kick some life back into her words. Trying not to slip into a depression. Her fault, her fault, her fault- "I'm gonna take the house. I'll fix this s**t up by myself f'I have to."

But she had a feeling Chris would be more than willing to fortify the crap out of this place.

Jack rubbed at his eyes again and tugged his shirt up to dry his face quicker, feeling only minutely less gross afterwards. It'd been a long time since he had let himself go that far, and now he remembered why.

"Okay. But I'm doing that tomorrow." Tomorrow when he was less emotional and less tired and more willing to actually face other people at all. "Today I'd rather just go home," he said with a drained but hopeful look that he wouldn't be alone again.

Chel let her fingers curl under his jaw, but she didn't pull it closer. She just held him, close but not too close. Mostly because something intimate didn't feel right. Not when he was a mess, she needed a shower and they were both exhausted.

"My place or yours?" she said quietly, reaching down to her waist and pulling up her goggles. She unclipped them from her belt and offered them to him. "Here. For the walk back so you can cover your s**t up." She had a feeling he wouldn't want to be seen in the post-crying stage. True, her goggles were still see-thru, but they had a light pink tint to them which would make Jack's condition be mostly invisible.

He cupped one side of her face in turn, tapping her cheek with his thumb as he replied, "Yours has the private shower, babe."

Upon taking the goggles, he blearily blinked at them, belatedly remembered something, and pat his chest in search of it. As it turned out, the sunglasses he has worn on the way over had been forgotten in the midst of their conversation, but they weren't far. Jack was able to lean over and snatch them up, checking the lenses and blowing some dust off before offering them to her. He didn't know if Chel cared as much about appearance in this case, but the tradeoff felt more appropriate to him nevertheless.

Chel pulled him and the sunglasses up off the ground. If they were going to get going, they might as well start now.

She took the sunglasses, but instead put them on top of his head and said, "Don't need 'em." Strangers on this island had already seen her near-naked, bleeding and crazed. There wasn't much more of her reputation to salvage; a few tears wouldn't do anything.

With that arranged she started moving towards the door. "C'mon. I'll walk you back then I gotta go find Chris. Abbi too." She gave a tired sigh, hunching over as she dug for her phone. Things to do, things to do.

Jack reached out to stop her. "They're all in the infirmary," he said. "Take the rest of the day for yourself, Chel." He realized saying so for Abbi in particular might raise questions, so he sighed and added, "She got into a fight with one of the traitors, but she's fine. We'll both look in tomorrow, sound good?"

Chel stopped, but only enough to grab the arm that stopped her and tug it towards the exit. "I can't," she said quietly. "I can't. F'I don't see them with my own eyes I'll go crazy."

Maybe she'd come home tired, but it was better to be tired and satiated than well-rested and paranoid. "'Sides, f'I don't look fer Chris he'll give me s**t forever." At this point she didn't even know what had happened to his clone, if he was back on the island, if they had his status ...?

And what was this about Abbi fighting a traitor???

He squinted as the last days of sun hit him through the pink goggle lenses. He knew Chel wouldn't be able to rest at all without looking in, but it had been worth a shot to try and keep her longer. "Okay. Then I'll walk you to the tents, then," Jack told her as he started to lead them there. He neither offered to stay outside or join her; these were things she would want to do on her own anyway, and Jack had no desire to linger around the premises until duty called. Chel had drained him enough as it was.

"I don't know what happened, but I asked around; it's the real a*****e in there," he informed her. "So. Little miracles and all."

Chel wondered if he was pushing so hard to stay with her because he actually cared, or if he simply didn't want her out of his sight. Trust or mistrust.

"I won't be long," she promised him. As they walked (mostly in silence), she tapped out a few messages. Eventually she held up her phone to Jack.

"What's this say?"
