J'nes had always thought the Bonded Obstacle Course was a fun trust activity and was looking forward to giving it a shot. So once he and Hatteth were rested up from their turn in the Wing Relay, he proposed they give it a try. Hatteth agreed, so they headed down to the field set aside for it.

But once they came in sight of the area, Hatteth slowed. I did not realize there would be so many spectators, he told J'nes. Won't we look foolish with you stumbling around?

"No more than anyone else," J'nes answered cheerily. "And if we do well, then it doesn't matter how silly we look." He walked on without slowing, so Hatteth had to accept they were participating now mater how enthusiastic he was about it.

They got to see a few people go through before it was their turn, so they got the idea of how things went. Then it was their turn. J'nes was blindfolded tightly, then lead up to the starting line. OK, buddy, where do I go? J'nes asked.

Hatteth stood a short distance from the obstacle course, craning his neck to get a good view. Start by moving forward, he instructed. J’nes started walking forward at a normal walking pace, but Hatteth quickly said, No, slow down! J’nes stalled at the call, then obediently slowed, instead continuing onward at more of a careful stroll.

Better, Hatteth told him. Now, there is a right turn coming up in two steps…one…turn. J’nes slowed at the count, stoped at the indicated point, then executed a 90-degree turn before continuing onward.

They continued in this fashion, though couple times Hatteth misjudged the distance and J’nes nearly overstepped, but Hatteth barely caught his mistake each time. It did slow them down though, and while The pair got through the obstacle, it was far from the fastest time.

…And you are through, Hatteth finally told his rider. Continue straight forward, the next portion if nor far ahead of you.

J'nes picked up his pace a bit as he headed for the next portion of the obstacle course. OK, what's the next part consist of, so I have an idea what's coming? he asked Hatteth.

You're veering to the left of it, angle slightly right, Hatteth said instead. And this one is a field with things in the way, like poles and fences. I will need to guide you around them to get to the other side.

Sounds reasonable, J'nes said as he continued on. So, map out the quickest path and guide me along it?

I will try, Hatteth answered. Careful, the first block is not far in front of you.

J’nes slowed down to the stroll he’d used in the last portion, alert and ready for the call to turn. He trusted Hatteth to stop him before he ran into anything.

Now, you need to turn… Hatteth began, but not quick enough. J’nes walked straight into a fence and banged his knee on it. He stumbled backward and rubbed his knee, commenting, Well that didn’t go well. Try to be a little quicker next time.

Sorry, Hatteth said contritely. I did not mean for you to get hurt.

J’nes put his hand out, groping until he felt the fence, then ran his hand along it as he circled around it. OK, now where?

Walk forward angling a bit to the left, Hatteth directed. When J’nes complied, Hatteth corrected, no, not that far. Turn back a bit.

J’nes stopped in place and turned slowly until Hatteth said, Good, now forward.
They stumbled through the field, J’nes moving slowly, bumping into things a few more times, and eventually he took to holding his hands out in front of him to try and keep from hitting more. But eventually he got through it.

Let’s hope we do better at the next one, he said as he continued on.

Killakeeth had been watching the shenanigans for a bit now. They had some highly amusing results as dragons and whers tried to direct riders and handlers. Some were clearly better at giving directions and some better at following. With an eager bugle she pushed her way into the dragon stands. From here she'd direct and supposedly guide her rider through the course. How well Vosin followed her directions would remain to be seen. Killa took a moment to observe the course.

'Alright Vosin. Are you ready? Blind fold good and tight?' Without waiting she launch into her orders. 'Turn slightly right from your direction. Ahead of you is a path. It is narrow so listen carefully. We don't want you to mess up.' She tried to direct her rider left, right, and forward, but quickly found it wasn't as easy as it looked.

Vosin was excited for her turn. The blindfold applied and she made sure it was secure. Don't be planning anything too horrible. The goal was to do as best as they could. Although, with the amusement factor she couldn't be sure Killa would fly straight. It was all in good fun anyhow. Ready! She turned slightly as directed and started forward. For a moment she worried about the narrowness of the path. Then she felt Killa inside her head and focused on that. The thoughts were whisper soft.

Left...
tiny left...
go right....
straight ahead....
now right....

It all fell into place easily for her. Vosin grinned as she practically breezed through the winding pathway. They would be able to ace this without any problems! Alright, what am I looking at next? Despite having watched and looked over the course, she couldn't remember what was right in front of her.

Excellently done Vosin. You were light on your feet and quick to respond. Killa warbled in pleasure. So far so good. They were a good team. Here to have fun. To your left slightly. There is another field to pass through. It has many things in it. Watch out or you might trip. This would be harder. Instead of just keeping her rider on the path, she needed to anticipate where she was going and get her out of the way of objects. Focus and we'll be fine. Ready? Go!

I had good directions, she praised her dragon. Vosin tilted her head as she listened. This sounded harder; which was the point of the obstacle course. It only got harder and harder. Well do your best to keep me from tripping eh? I'd rather not end up with a broken ankle today. Inadvisable she took a deep breath and started coughing on the dust. I'm ok! Brushing her face off she stepped out to face the field.

At first she thought things were going swimmingly. Vos felt an object to her right and went around. Suddenly alarm flared in her mind from the gold. Vosin watch out! No go left! "Ooff!" She'd walked straight into a fence. Warn me sooner next time! What are you doing up there? Looking at all the handsome bronzes?

Well now that you mention it... Killa glanced coyly at the bronze sitting nearby. He is quite handsome Vos. I bet his rider matches. The dragon tried to interest her rider.

Focus! Obstacle course you got me into the middle of remember? She brushed herself off. Thankfully nothing was hurt except maybe her pride. They'd do better this time. Killa managed to draw her attention from the muscles on the bronze to focus on directing her rider.

Vosin was tense at first, afraid of crashing into anything else. Soon though she relaxed and began to enjoy it again. First a left, then straight a couple of steps, then an curving zigzag around several fences. Before she knew it, she was out.

You made it past the field Vos. Oh look at what's ahead! Ooops you're blindfolded, sorry. It's a moat. You shouldn't have to worry about knocking your toes or busting your shins here! The dragon sounded cheerful. She studied the moat for a long moment. Ok, I think I see the route you need. Go left a bit until I say stop.

Oh great. So I get wet instead? She felt confusion from her dragon. When she bathed Killa, she most certainly got wet then too. So what was the difference? There I expect to get wet. I wear cloths I can get wet in. She tried to explain. Nevermind about it. Let's just try to keep me dry hm?

As soon as she took a step forward she knew something wasn't right. A dragon laughing in her head let her know she was off the mark by several steps. Luckily she only went in up to her knees, but that was still bad enough.

Ugh! My shoes are going to squish and squeak the rest of the day! She'd go change right after they did this. Squishy shoes were never fun, unless you were a kid and didn't care, and soggy shoes never looked good on a goldrider. The damage done, Vos clambered up onto a platform. Ok, where's my next one? She turned slightly until the dragon told her to stop. Are you sure? I don't want to end up to my hips in water. Maybe it was only a puddle to Killa, but that water was cold!

Despite her worries, her next step saw her safely to the next platform. A few more leaps of faith saw she the rest of the way across the moat. Not too bad.

So what’s next on the agenda? J’nes asked as he picked up his pace to a brisk walk. They’d been slow at the last portion, and he wanted to make up a bit of time if he could.

Hatteth examined the ground ahead of his rider. It looks like a trench filled with water, and several platforms sticking up just above its surface. You will have to cross on those if you want to avoid getting wet.

And that would be uncomfortable. Let’s see if we can keep me dry, J’nes said. He slowed down, not wanting to run straight into the water and start off on the wrong foot.

[3. Cross a 'moat' by navigating across platforms. The moat is as deep as an adult's waist and filled with water.]

Hatteth studied the ground, looking for the best route. If there was a path his rider could take that didn’t involve having to jump, that would be best. After a moment he found a route that looked like J’nes could just step from one platform to the next. OK, turn a bit right and move slowly. The edge is close.

J’nes obediently slowed, turning in a gentle arc until Hatteth said, There. One more step...Now you’re at the edge. One bit step forward to the first platform.

J’nes paused just briefly, then stepped out as far as he could. Thankfully, his foot landed on a solid surface instead of in water, and he quickly brought his other foot over.

Good, now turn to your left and take a small step. There is water beyond, but you need to get closer to the edge.

J’nes followed his instructions to the letter, and he stepped from platform to platform with no difficulty. Before long he was stepping from one hard surface onto grass and heard, You’re across!

Well that wasn’t so bad, J’nes answered. On to the next one!
