He barked a laugh and all but anticipated the launch onto his back, hastily catching her so she didn't just hang off his neck. At least this time neither of them had to worry about dodging another flying projectile: the firework seemed to dip for a moment, but then it flared to life and soared up into an arc, bursting this time into blue sparks that then crackled a second after deployment.
"N' there ya go!" Dawson chirped, tilting his head up and to the side with a big smile. "Easy s'pie."

Watching the firework fly up into the air while hooked on his back gave her a sense of nostalgia for something she'd never experienced, or couldn't remember experiencing if she had. It was like a scene from a movie, with a child watching fireworks on her father's shoulders. The only trouble was, she was only remembering it from movies, and Dawson was definitely not her father.
She looked down at his face while the fading blue tinge in the air lit up his features, and smiled that rare, brilliant smile that she'd kept carefully locked away when she was smart about it. She leaned in, and kissed his forehead, before turning back up to see the last bits of blue fade away.
"Okay." She admitted with a hush. "It was pretty amazing."

His smile broadened until little caves of dimples showed. "Good, good...So, how's 'bout we make that our tradition, yeah? Donuts n' fireworks on the beach for the 4th? Next year I'll try n' get us a grill," he promised. It just wasn't a holiday without grilled meat.

Maebe sucked in a sharp breath, and held it for a few seconds, before finally letting go. "Sure." She agreed to it, despite how every ache in her body warned her against making plans with anyone that extended to a yearly basis. Perhaps that was why she had no traditions. If she'd made any with the people she'd once loved, then whatever she had promised to share would now be ruined.
She decided to endanger fireworks and donuts, by giving them to Dawson in her promise.
"It's our tradition."
