Maia was surprised by Toby's consideration, but maybe she shouldn't have been. He after all had taken her for taffy, helped her out when she'd been oblivious to danger. "Thank you," She said gratefully. She didn't have much at home, just things she had collected over the years, or been given.

"Agates, jasper, glass floats, shells." Maia shrugged. "Pretty things. I love the ocean, it makes everything seem more beautiful." She paused, looking away slightly. "I'm going to miss it here." She picked up a stone and threw it in to the water. "I think you'd freeze if we tried swimming now. Maybe tomorrow? Since I'm posing as human."

Well, he could always change forms and grow some fur himself but it'd likely still be uncomfortably cold. Canines weren't exactly made for living in the ocean.

"I know," he responded with a little nod. You always missed home. "We'll get you somewhere else with a beach, and you can take anything you want with you." His own removal had been less consensual. He had lost everything.all at once. It hadn't been easy. Maia would have it slightly more simply, but that didn't mean it would be any easier. Changing homes was always hard, especially after several decades.

"We'll be taking a private jet back to HQ so you can pack whatever you like. Maybe tomorrow night?" They could use the darkness as a cover. "Sure. We can come to the beach tomorrow." Why not take a little pleasure time? The assignment had been expected to be at least a week long. Plus they'd have to go deal with the kelpie, if it actually existed.

Somewhere with a beach. But it wouldn't be the same. The same seals, the same waters, the home. She sighed and nodded. If she'd been able, She would have uprooted the beach to take with her. "Private jet?" She echoed. Some people came to Oregon by plane, but she'd never seen one up close. And a jet was big, wasn't it? Why would three people need all that room?

"I don't really have that much to bring," she said. She was pleased when he agreed to come to the beach again tomorrow. "Lets go get dinner," she said. "Pizza! Hamburger pizza."

"Mm. Coming in is easy. Going back out is much more complicated."

He tucked the sea glass into his pocket and nodded. "Sure. How far is it?" They could easily return to the hotel and take the rental car if needed, but a walk wouldn't be so bad either. For now Maia was safe. She couldn't transform, and people would want to believe she was eccentric before they believed she was a legendary creature.

"We could always order it to go. Or call from the hotel. They'd bring it to us," she suggested. It seemed she was still nervous about being recognized. And that way, they could convince Dari to eat something. "I'm sure there's a phone number in the hotel," she added.

She decided to answer his question though, point to their left. "Its a long walk. Maybe we can get that car of yours if you want to eat out."

Maia seemed nervous. She hadn't believed him initially and now she was taking his advice a little too close to heart. Without her pelt she was safe, but he wanted her to be comfortable too. Besides, what pizza place didn't make meatball pizza?

"Come on, we'll go keep Dari company. You don't want to look for shells a little longer?"

Toby reminded her why she'd wanted to come to the beach in the first place. She nodded, taking his hand and leading him down a portion of the beach. She stopped a moment, bending to shift through the seaweed. She picked up a sanddollar, rinsing it in the surf. "Probably the best I'm going to find tonight," she said, a little ruefully. She placed the sanddollar into Toby's hand. "For you."

It wasn't worth as much as the taffy had cost, not even close. But She hoped he liked it. "Do you think Dari would like one too?"

This was definitely the most physically affectionate non-child entity Toby had ever encountered. Usually they were afraid and had very little interest in holding hands or conversing much unless it was in their nature to seek human comfort. It was barely appropriate for an agent to be touching an entity anyway. He tried to gently tug his hand away but then Maia released him and crouched to pull something from the risen seaweed. He took it instinctively and smiled. They really weren't supposed to take gifts either, for various reasons from moral code to accidentally falling under curses. Just one wasn't going to hurt him, though. Not from a selkie.

"We don't need anything. We're here for you." He didn't give it back, though, and instead continued the young woman as they continued down the beach. At times he would crouch with her, bringing himself closer to the briny scent of the ocean, until the hunger for pizza started to set in.

"Come on, let's head back," he offered and found that he almost offered his hand for her to take. To avoid such indiscretion, he shoved his free hand into his pocket. He walked with Maia back to the hotel and held the front door open for her, then guided her to their room once more and pulled the door open with use of the key card.

"We're back!" he called, "We're going to order some p--" Suddenly Toby laughed and turned to Maia. "C'mere, c'mere."

On the bed lay a large and especially fat gelatinous black seal. As with any first try at a specific form it was lacking a bit of finesse. The seal's face was a little blunt, and although it had 'nostrils' it lacked whisker or follicles or especially detailed fins. If one knew to look, one might see the usual set of Dari's bones floating in its ample belly. It was a sort of shortcut to make becoming 'human' again simpler. Its glowing white eyes lolled up at the returning visitors and its tail flapped happily. No voice, because trying to fit a human voice box in a seal's mouth would only mean embarrassing vocalizations.

Maia went to Toby's side once she was inside the hotel room. She beamed, hurrying over to Dari. She climbed onto the bed and wrapped her arms around him. "How'd you do that?" she demanded. An alien Selkie? No, he was still slightly transparent. "You're a seal!" She was delighted. She hadn't been able to catch sight of one on the beach. And though Dari's seal lacked details, it was clear Maia was quite pleased with the attempt.

She set a snail shell in front of him. "Toby says you don't need anything, but no one ever needs a seashell except the animal who lived inside. They're nice to look at, though. Its too small for you to hear the ocean in." Those were almost impossible to find. Oregon wasn't known for excellent shell finding areas.

She looked over at Toby. "He's magic, isn't he?"

Dari couldn't respond verbally, but he gave her a pat with a front flipper. Toby thought it was an unnecessary but very enjoyable move. He knew how long it took to change and how much effort. Dari was just trying to amuse the selkie, to offer her a distraction and something just a bit silly. It was in his nature, even as confused as people got about how a bag of fluid could possibly have a personality. Dari looked down to the shell but couldn't do much else. Locomotion was hard when you weren't used to making the motions. Flapping was one thing but actual movement was entirely another.

"Nah, that's all skill," Toby offered with a laugh, moving to the laptop which, as predicted, was turned slightly toward the bed with a Googled image of a little grey seal pulled up. He took down the search and began looking for a menu and phone number. "We're getting a pizza, do you want anything?" Dari flapped.

"Uh, alright, I'm going to assume you're all good."

If distraction was Dari's goal, he had succeeded. The Selkie didn't once look towards where she felt her coat must be. She patted him on the head. "You need more practice," she said, studying him with enthusiasm. "You'll get it." She didn't seem to mind the rubbery feel of him. .

"He's got talent," she said, sitting up and stretching. She normally stayed up until late, swimming under the stars. She wouldn't be able to do that tonight, though. She would have to at least pretend to sleep, until they did. And then work out the combination of the safe. And then escape the hotel room without either of them waking.

It'd be a feat. She was sure she could manage it!

Dari would surely have spoken were he able. He allowed the selkie to pat him, but as Toby put in his pizza order, the pressure began to change. He was most comfortable in his human form these days and it was a rather complicated one. He rarely fooled around with shapes any more for the time it took to get back into them, but this poor dear seemed like she'd needed a bit of cheering-up. The bits and pieces in his belly began to shift and rearrange, skull and throat rising while transparent 'bones' began to fill in the space. It was almost disturbing to watch his shape change ever so slowly. The bare shape of a human head came first, then one arm, and from that point it began to go more easily as the alien used fingers to prod places where the surface needed to dip. Teeth came shortly before lips and Dari moved his face and jaw like an animatronics test before his torso seemed mostly formed.

Toby kept the two company throughout the ordeal. There had been a time when Dari had needed to touch him, to feel his face and chest and hands to perfect his appearance. They actually looked rather similar between them, like the brotherhood they felt rather than actually achieved.

"We should have thrown you in the ocean," Toby said. Dari took a moment to gather his voice and smiled.

"I'd sink," he replied, "and that's not very nice." As it was, the lower half of his body was just a rounded flap. "Did you go swimming?"

"No. The resident selkie was worried for my safety. I found out something new, though."

"Mm?" Dari was watching where his lower body began to split slowly, creating even legs.

"There may or may not be a young kelpie eating children down the road."

Dari's face twisted and he looked to Toby briefly. "and our death counts couldn't catch it?"

"I don't think it's killing that many people."

Maia was rather startled as Dari started to change. It seemed like a slow process, and she hopped of the bed to give him some space. It seemed she had been wrong in her assumption that everyone transformed as easily as she did. It was like changing clothes, easy, fast.

She made a face. "He'd drown," she complained. And she didn't have her pelt to dive in and save anyone. "And you'd freeze. You humans get too cold and you can't move. You drown." Not on her watch. She glanced at Toby as he spoke of the kelpie, frowning slightly.

Did he still doubt it? She was worried he'd go alone, and the kelpie would drag him under the water. "We should go see," she suggested. "I can lure it out if you like."
PostPosted: Sun Jun 21, 2015 5:28 pm

"I only breathe to speak," Dari assured the young woman, pushing himself up on his arms and beginning to form a calves, then ankles and finally toes.

"Me, I might drown," Toby added, looking to Maia as she turned to him. She could probably stay in the hotel room where her pelt was kept without hurting and he certainly didn't want her to put herself in danger dealing with a kelpie, fae or not. "Don't worry, we've met kelpie before. Selkie too. Ghosts, aliens, chupacabra, vampires, werewolves, mermaids, dragons... We're well-trained."

"Then stay here," Maia said. "Stay here where Its safe." He might have met kelpies before, but they we're devious. Dangerous, and not at all polite. But that seemed to be the norm for the unseelie folk. "Dragons?" she echoed, wide eyed. "You'll have to tell me that story. How did you survive?"

Well. If they could survive dragons, maybe they had a chance against a Kelpie.
