The mountain top revealed a chest with a helm made of steady wood, even a few twigs and branches of the Alder tree on it. Hopefully there wouldn't be a need to ride into flames anytime soon.

gaia_crown NEW QUEST - 5/13/13 gaia_crown Alexei - no, Alexandra for the time being he supposed, sat in the great hall with a stare more vacant than the great beyond, ragged and dirty chestnut hair obscures his face. He is somehow considered a Knight now, despite everything that has transpired. Despite the fact that he had killed Morgan, despite the fact that he had fallen right into the ploy of the Sidhe Queen, letting her free, letting the legion of shadows free. This was entirely his fault, and they all knew it. Alexandra should have know she made the mistake when the other apprentices didn't attack Morgan, she should have seen the looks of terror and loss when she struck the killing blow.
It had felt so right. Morgan was the one who had done this to them - Morgan was the one who initiated the clamor for the Mirror and the Gate. Morgan, the illusion, the false one, the interloper, had brought about Gawain's madness by bringing the Green Knight to the room, letting him see his reflection. Alexandra was not sure what Gawain saw in that mirror, but she knew what she saw - and it was certainly maddening. She had not seen much in her short life, but Gawain had seen much, and he spoke of things that, she was sure, did great damage to his soul. Seeing those demons reflected back to him must have been a red cape to his inner bull. She did not blame the man for succumbing to whatever the mirror showed him, nor did she blame Percival for granting the mercy he did.
She blamed only herself and Morgan, The Queen of the Sidhe, and circumstance. She should not have been in that room, she should have left when the infighting began. Alexandra knew how she reacted to heated conflict, yet she stayed. She did something irrational, and she regretted it.
But here they were, and he was a Knight with a sacred weapon. The same energy poured out of Brienne as it had in the cove, as if she were trying to say something. Alexandra didn't know why he'd called the shield Brienne, but he knew it felt right. It was comforting, strangely, to hold her in his hands, to run his hands over the embossed peony. It was almost as if he was around a maternal figure, but said figure was away in another Kingdom.
He examined his armor, smiling faintly as the memories of Gawain handing her each and every piece when he'd brought them back from his journeys. There was always a good word said, some minor praise - Gawain was a fair knight. He wanted to live in that same manner.
There was a fire in his belly, despite the churning and rumbling of a lack of food, despite the nauseous trauma, despite the swimming head and the constant confusion from a lack of mead. The fire burned low now, sputtering and shooting angry sparks now and again.
The fire urged her to redeem herself, to complete what she started. Had she caused this all to happen? Yes. Had Alexandra taken the bait and unlocked a world of misery and turmoil? Yes, she had.
But even the worst of man could turn themselves around. There was no point of terminal morality, no doors barred against him.
He would redeem his mistakes, he would live up to Gawain's title and somehow, somehow he would make things right. He would heal, he would save. This was the only path, this was absolution.
She would conquer herself and her mistakes; she and Brienne together would topple the mountain of her sins.
The fire was growing.

It was time to test Brienne out, Alexandra supposed. The Eagles came down in a hail of talons, and the Knight hid behind her shield, waiting for the opportune moment to pop out and retaliate with a swiping blow of the shield to an eagle's flank, then bashing another one with the embossed peony and chain.
They flew away, and she smiled despite the cuts sustained to her right flank. The victory was small, her actions were clumsy - but she was alive.
