Chance was in the process of searching for a new shirt to wear, his voice coming out slightly muffled due to his head in the closet.
"I know," he said lightly, finally finding one. "And not to get all sappy and s**t, because ******** if I do sappy, but I do owe you one, so I'm gonna keep to that."

Otto shrugged, unseen to the one who was stuffed in a closet. Now he couldn't get his mind off cake. Nothing would taste good until he had it. He licked his teeth, his daydreams getting more detailed and intricate of what sort of cakes and treats existed in the world, and all of them congregating around Otto.

He emerged a few seconds later, shaking his head to get his hair out of his eyes and then immediately regretting this movement, as it made the dizziness rise threateningly again. Chance cast an amused glance at Otto.
"Okay, choice," he said with a laugh. "I can either make you a cake, which would take a bit longer and I'd have to swipe supplies from the kitchen again, or I can take you to get some off island, in which case there are probably more options, but it's up to you."
He smiled winningly. "And don't say neither, because either way you're getting cake."

"Off island." Otto murmured. He'd be in agony watching a cake bake, and likely give up part way and eat the batter. Besides, he needed time away from the tropics now and then. Time to shed the hunter coat and be normal for as few hours.

"Done," said Chance, snapping his fingers together. He grinned.
"Now, go change, since I assume in my drunken stupor I didn't let you leave last night, and I'll meet you at the dorm entrance in a few minutes?"

"Mmkay." Because Chance was right. Otto didn't get to leave, and had sleep in last night's clothes. No chance to even brush his teeth or hair. Though the latter didn't always get the attention it sorely needed. Otto meandered out of Chance's room, and upstairs to his own. After freshening up and getting dressed, he met with Chance at the allotted place. Dressed in a comfy black hoodie and decent pair of jeans (shocker), the blond was ready for the real world.

He took the few minutes he had to splash water on his face and hair in a quick wash, Chance running his fingers through his damp curls to rake them away from his face. He felt a little drained, but surprisingly well-rested, most likely because he'd actually slept for more than a few hours at a time.
At the entrance, he greeted Otto with a smile, sliding his hands into his own jeans, which were artfully ripped in places and a little form-fitting.
"Okay, so I have two places in mind, thanks to a little research," said Chance brightly as they walked to the lighthouse. "Do you want food before cake, or just cake?"

"Just cake." Otto responded promptly, turning to follow alongside Chance. "I got cake on the brain. I can't enjoy nuthin' until I get it." Not even the tastiest burger or sandwich. "Maybe food after."

"Cake it is," said Chance grandly. "I know just the place. Granted, I've never been there myself, but I've heard several rumors that it has one hell of a kickass chocolate cake perfect for our excursion."
The tech on duty was given a light smile, and he waved them through with a bored expression on his face after a few whispered words.
The other side of the portal revealed bright sunlight and a strong smell of the ocean. A cluster of colorful shops were spread down a cheerful looking street filled with a variety of people, and everything was quite lighthearted.
"This way, this way," said Chance, ushering Otto down a less-crowded street purposefully. "We're in Santa Monica, California, by the way, in case you were wondering."

"Santa Monica..." Otto repeated to himself, allowing himself to be led as he looked around curiously. He lightly pulled his hood down, seeing as he really didn't need it in such a nice place. He never needed it on Deus either, but he always felt the need to be coddled in something large like a hoodie. It just wasn't such a great idea in the heat, so he unzipped it and rolled up the sleeves. He liked the lack of a crowd. It made breathing easier. "Where'd you go last night?"

Chance had worn a teeshirt in preparation for the warm weather, which was pleasant and gentle, rather than a scalding heat of elsewhere. The walk would only take a few minutes (though he did hope he was going in the right direction).
He cast a look over at Otto, wincing slightly as they walked.
"Er...a bar back in Michigan," Chance admitted. "Far away from where I'm from, though, since I know we're not supposed to head back to our hometowns. I was several hours west, closer to Chicago. I was only there for a bit, knocked back a few shots before I headed back."
With a now ruined cheesecake for Otto and a now empty bottle of booze that he'd picked up at the store on his way back to Deus.

"You ever miss your hometown? Not the lifestyle, I mean." He knew that wasn't something "Just the atmosphere or whatever."

He considered the question for a moment, a hum escaping past his lips.
"Maybe the atmosphere a little," Chance admitted. "But not really, I suppose it's more just...the familiarity of it that has me wondering about what it's like now."
He smiled faintly at Otto, the smile not quite reaching his eyes. "I suppose that's kind of a drag, but I consider Deus to be where I return to now. What about you? Do you miss yours?"

"Kinda. It's funny. All my life I wished I could get away and live in a city. But now I miss it. Farmland, quiet roads.. bugs at night. Open skies. That kinda stuff." He murmured distantly. "And sometimes I wonder.. what everyone thought after I was gone. Whether or not they actually cared." That was something he ought to ask Ripley. Apparently the poor man had actually been to his funeral. That thought made his heart heavy with a finality and dread.

His eyes shifted to watch Otto, narrowed slightly out of concentration and thought.
"I'm sure there must have been people who cared," said Chance quietly. A small part of him resisted the urge to reach out and hug him, or at least touch is shoulder, but Chance had the feeling he'd done enough grabbiness today. "I mean, obviously I can't speak for whoever you knew, but...you seem like the kind of guy who had friends."
The smile on his face was slightly sardonic. "I didn't make friends, or rather, I just knew people, not really knew them."
