"But you can't go alone-"

"I got it!" Chel hushed Jordan, slapping her on the shoulder. She was already on Jack's toes and she could hear Aly and Serah whispering, but she didn't mind so much.

Once they were out of earshot Chel said, "It okay if I walk with you?" Very casually she took stride with him, which was hard since his legs were so long. "If you wanna be alone I can wait here."

Despite what Jordan said, Chel continued, "I mean buddy system and all, but you ain't gonna die out there." Chel's blabber mouth had been set in motion already. "Just uh ... You okay I guess?"

"Mm," was all he said for a while, focused on putting distance between them at the group. He'd grabbed a flashlight on the way out just in case, but out there the stars did a pretty good job of lighting up the landscape—and forcibly reminding him once again of how high up they were. Eventually Jack slowed so Chel didn't have to work as hard to keep up and sighed.

"Needed to get away," he explained, still a little muted, still forward gazing. "I don't transition well when it's with people." He stopped near a cliff edge, where one of the barrier daggers hummed quietly nearby, and stuffed his hands in his coat pockets to keep them warm. The view was plain (literally and figuratively), but the scope of it was what gave him pause.

"You've been doing alright with those daggers," Jack noted after another moment.

Chel was secretly (or probably not as secretly given how bad she was at hiding her feelings) glad that Jack had allowed her to tag along.

"What happened to Mr. Popular?" Chel taunted, before quickly saying, "Joking, joking." She was grateful he slowed down, because keeping up with Jack was a task in and of itself. She wasn't sure whether or not to leave him alone, so she went with her gut. "Something happen back on the island?"

But he changed the subject for her, and perhaps with a bit more energy in her voice, she responded, "I ******** hate them. It makes me feel real ... small? on the battlefield. I ain't got no reach or nothin'."

"Welcome to the close range melee world, Chel, where there are disappointing limitations all around." Daggers were worse, though; at least his sword had a little reach. "Experience the joy of stabbing things while you still can," he told her with a glance. "At least that's very rewarding.

"But no, nothing happened back at base. Everyone just decided to go out on missions around the same time." He shrugged a little. "It gave me a chance to do things on my own. You forget how to work with a team after a while, that's all." Like he had ever been a real team player to begin with. "Well, that and everyone's annoying."

Chel's nose wrinkled a bit and she said, "Don't forget Tensy's a sword too. Daggers ain't got s**t on swords, but I'm trained in close combat too." Just in case Jack wanted another reminder of Chel's skills.

The second thing worried her much less than what her imagination thought up. "Is this yer roundabout way of sayin' you missed yer friends?" Not "us" or "me" in case that group didn't include her.

"Hmm..." She mused for a moment. "Well s'there anything I could tell you? So ya don't have to interact with the... What do you always call it- the pleebs?" She resisted the urge to scratch at her nose idly, suddenly remembering that dunking in pond water might not have been the smartest idea.

"It's a bow with pointy edges," Jack argued. "Not the same. And no, this is me directly saying I enjoyed the solitude. I got more done this week than I have in a while." The change of solitary work to a big group was just jarring, let alone with strangers and a way too chummy hunter.

He was mildly surprised at the offer and considered it. "Nah," Jack said after a while, starting them at a languid walk again. "We got debriefed by Jordan earlier. I still can't believe you got to meet the demon-ghost Nuba."

< There is a .902084% chance that pushing this male from a nearby cliffside will result in non-injury/death. >

"Tensy's butthurt you insulted him," Chel said with a cracked smile.

< This is why I refrain from commenting in your affairs. >

Chel followed Jack's pace, letting him lead their walk, as always. After a day (of a week) of fighting, Chel actually just wanted to sit for a while, but if walking was what got Jack talking, she didn't mind the exhaustion that would follow the next morning.

"Nuba? Wassat?" Chel asked curiously. "Didn't really ... meet her, more like ... well she met the ground ..." Chel actually blushed thinking back on her ridiculous dramatics that could have easily gotten her killed. "They tell you what happened?"

Jack snorted and said, "It's the truth." Though he called it a small victory as well to cause the otherwise silent weapon to stir.

"Nuba was supposedly the daughter of the Yellow Emperor, one of the major players in the battle here. A drought demon, I believe? Jordan mentioned you broke a bridge taking it down." He side-eyed her as if silently chiding the wanton destruction, but he sounded mildly impressed. "Sounded like fun."

"Broke through the bridge," Chel corrected. "Gravity just seemed like the smartest way to take it down ..." She withheld the fact that her body had been quite damaged aftewards. Best to focus on the "fun" part.

She pulled her jacket closer and said, "Man, worst part of this s**t is how cold it gets." Her nose twisted in annoyance as she pictured Chris with his fuzzy warm winter hunter coat. It was oddly plain conversation- talking about the weather.

"Oh!" she said suddenly, "I have a present for ya when we get back to camp. Or maybe when we get home."

"Yeah, and nearly killing yourself in the process I bet." He could only guess at how her shield was compromised thanks to that bracelet, but even at full strength a plummet was a risk.

Jack stopped them again and for the first time that day (and night), he turned to fully face Chel. A present. So she really didn't seem to be mad at him anymore. But he didn't know how to address what was ultimately a stupid thought, so he said instead, "Nice. Look, go back if you're that cold, Chel, I'll be fine on my own for a few more minutes." Though she couldn't possibly be that cozy with those bloodstained clothes.

"But the moonlight's so romantic," Chel said, putting a hand to her forehead. But Jack looking at her somewhat intensely did make her metaphorically sweat until she covered with a joke. "I'll just have to spend the night in your tent. There's no option for lil frail ol' me."

She pushed her cheek into Jack's arm (not her nose because ow) and said, "Ya can't get rid of me that easy. Gotta try a lot harder than that. I give that attempt a solid three." Finally she had the confidence to loop her arm around his like she always did. "Can I ask ya somethin'?"

He scoffed, but he'd be lying if he said he didn't find a strange and small relief in the contact. It was something familiar and grounding, a reminder not to slip back into a stream of consciousness as he had been doing so much of lately. And while Jack was a little awkward at first on principle, the usual stiffness abated; he was even smiling a little, if that wasn't a trick of the starlight.

"No, that was more like a one. This," he wiggled their arms as if trying to shake her off, "is more like a three. What's the question?"

"Noooo." As Jack wiggled, Chel's hands snaked around his sides until she was standing in front of him with her hands resting on his back through each of his arms. The motion effectively made him have to stop walking.

Owlish eyes looked up at him. "Are you afraid of heights?"

The action gave him pause, but the question didn't.

"I plead the fifth."
