Every Ten Minutes

Finn cocked his head to the side, considering Ripley silently for a moment.

"Deal." He finally answered. "Now eat."

The sarcasm was not missed, and instead taken with a certain amount of amusement. Chance glanced down at his drawing again, analyzing it absentmindedly while he listened to Ripley.

The tip of his pencil broke; he'd pressed down too hard unintentionally, trying extremely hard to conceal the snort of laughter that had threatened to overtake him because Ripley's suggestions were both blunt and terribly amusing, considering what had happened between Chance and Finn already. As it was, Chance let out a soft hum of laughter, shaking his head, as inside of his thoughts Asher was letting out peals of shameless giggles.

"Damn, you're desperate, aren't you?" he said, turning his head to grin at Ripley, but the bluntness hadn't fazed him before and it didn't now. "Well, I'm not sure where I'd get drugs, but I'm sure someone here has something, ******** him could be an option, though it wouldn't last eight hours, unless he has a ridiculous amount of stamina, and going off island could be pretty fun, depending on where we would go."

A pause, and then Chance added, just in case it wasn't clear he was being serious, "But yes, if you seriously want me to try and get Finn off of your back for eight hours, I will do my best."

Every Ten Minutes

Ripley struggled to sit up, and when he failed miserably at that, he instead reached for the button that would allow him to adjust the bed. Once he was up as far as his stomach would allow, he brought the tray closer and, true to his word, ate. It was a slow process, and one he didn't care for, but a deal was a deal.

Eventually, he finished his food, and lightly pushed the tray away from him.

"Happy?"

"You're in a hospital." Ripley reminded him a little bluntly. There were plenty of drugs here, of varying types. There must have been something around here that - "You can even take mine." He gestured towards the IVs at his side, one of which he was sure would knock out the resident pain in his a** for a few hours, at least. Chance mentioned his stamina, but Ripley stayed quiet on the subject, choosing to nonchalantly ignore the comment and carry on with something he felt comfortable answering.

"But yes, I am desperate." He just wanted to sleep, get his shield back up to par, and his wounds healed. That's all he wanted. None of these things were happening with any form of haste with Finn hovering around him, stressing him out. Before he had been sane enough to keep Finn at bay with bets and deals, he had been terribly close to ending the agreement they had; he didn't want to jeopardize it, but it was a very real possibility. So, he turned towards those he considered friends, who were the ones that could put up with either of them long enough.

"Thanks. I'll owe you big time." Ripley gave a heavy, almost relieved sigh. He really did want Finn off his back, at least for a little bit, anyway. "And let me know how much." He reached up to rub his face and pinch his nose, and then turned to take a look at the paper again, the one Chance had been scratching away at.

"Is that...me?" It was hard to tell upside down, but it certainly looked like him.

He had a point. Chance glanced around the infirmary with a mildly curious gaze, as though trying to figure out if it was even possible to sneak some medicinal drugs out without being seen (and without getting in a whole heap of trouble in the process). "Okay, but you need yours, though," he said pointedly, giving Ripley a look. "I can't take yours, taking yours would result in more pain."

He ran his fingers through his hair, contemplating. "I do, however, owe you," said Chance, "So yeah, I'll do what I can and I'll keep him occupied. Maybe I'll drug him, take him off island, and screw him," he added in a deadpan voice. "That's a three for one deal, right? I'll even through in a free drinking session."

Chance flashed Ripley a grin, clearly teasing, but his attention was drawn downward to the notebook in his hand. "Oh, yeah," he said lightly, tilting the page up so that the other man could see it better. "You've got the most interesting hair, and you're pretty good looking, both of which make for a good subject matter. I hope it doesn't bother you; if it does, I can draw something else."

"I'm still willing." Giving up his own pain medication was on the table, even though he knew it would bring his injuries into much sharper focus. But, since Chance was refusing to take it, he decided to let it drop - he let him know it was still an option, and that was the best he could do at this point.

"Sounds good." Though he didn't see how fixing a few friendly spar scratches meant he could unload his not-boyfriend off on someone for a full eight hours, he was relieved enough that it was going to happen. "I appreciate it. Have fun." Chance may have been teasing, but he wasn't. Though, somehow, something about it - perhaps the way Chance said it this time - made him feel somewhat uncomfortable. It was deep down, the sort of off-feeling you get when you can't quite place what's wrong, or even if something was wrong...but it was there. Foreboding, without the fear. As usual, nothing showed on his face, and he was quick to focus on something else - namely, the paper that was being turned for his benefit.

He didn't know what to say to the comments he was sure were compliments, though. Aside from giving Chance a rather unimpressed look which was, sadly, par for the course.

"You clearly suffered brain damage in the fight." He sighed, shaking his head slowly. "What a shame." Chance had so much promise. So much promise. "It's just long hair." He started, systematically doing his best to dismiss every piece of it. "-and you need glasses more than I do. But-" Sadly, there was one thing he couldn't dismiss, because it wasn't about him. "You're very talented, and it doesn't really bother me, no." Not many things did, it seemed. Aside from maybe getting compliments.

Every Ten Minutes

Finn took a seat in the nearby chair, quite clearly unwilling to go anywhere until Ripley ate every last bite of his jello, and drank every last drop of his chicken broth, and...apple juice? It kind of looked like piss, actually, but Finn was going to go ahead and assume that It was apple juice.

It took time, but eventually the other man succeeded, and Finn wasn't sure if he was happy or not, because now, of course, he would have to uphold his end of the bargain and leave, and not come back for another hour.

"Somewhat." He admitted, rising from his seat and glancing towards the nearby monitors, which remained at steady and healthy readings. Face stoic, he gathered up the tray of food. "Enjoy your nap."

He turned to leave, but he would be back, just as promised.

Chance gave Ripley a smile. "You are a man of few words, but a man of good words," he said grandly, reaching out to (gently) pat the other man's shoulder. But as teasing as he might have been, the fact that he considered Ripley to be a friend was unchanged, in spite of only recently meeting. It was easy to be comfortable around Ripley and it was easy to be comfortable around Finn, regardless of their differences, and maybe Chance was just getting complacent; but at present, he didn't want to change that, if it could be helped.

Ripley was given a sidelong glance, Chance raising an eyebrow in amusement. "Okay, fine, maybe I did," he said, and then added mildly, "My brain damaged head still thinks you're pretty good looking anyway, but I promise I'll drop it." His expression shifted a little, Chance glancing at his notebook with a more scrutinizing look in his eyes. "You think? I haven't really taken any classes or anything, but it's always been sort of a hobby of mine."

He shrugged, casting Ripley an easy smile this time. "Thanks, though. Got any suggestions for any drawings you want done?"

Every Two Minutes

He didn't even say bye. The answer had been satisfying enough, so he just settled back down for an hour's rest, and hoped that Finn would continue to be true to his word.

"...Thanks." He said quietly to the brief compliment on words, resisting the urge to flinch at the touch. It was reassuring, really, but it just hurt. Though the subject of his looks made him somewhat uncomfortable - yet still never reached his expression - he continued to watch Chance, especially as he went to scrutinize his sketch.

"Self-taught? Interesting." He looked away finally, this time towards the punny sketch of himself and Finn, scrutinizing it himself, though he had no technical skill of his own. "I can't even draw a stick figure." He admitted, setting the paper back on his lap with a great deal of care. Chance gave him the option for suggestions, and he pondered his options for a moment, which stretched between No, and whatever makes you happy.

"Do you know who Oliver Keeley is?"

Chance drew his hand back away quickly anyway, even if Ripley didn't show any pain, because surely he was still feeling some. It went back to doodling as he added a few more lines to the curve of the other man's shoulder and then again as he began to sketch the hospital gown over it.

"Yeah, mostly," he said lightly, a brief smile touching his lips. "There weren't exactly thriving opportunities for me to take any sort of art classes growing up. This was mostly just something I did to keep myself occupied, and since it was either this or get into fights with the other boys, I thought this was the more rational choice."

Chance's eyes flickered towards Ripley, a hint of amusement in his voice as he said, "Yeah, ran into him on the field one day. Why?"

"If you could go back, would you make the same choice?" Switch the pencil for more fighting experience? He could see where the art route was the more rational choice then, but now, under the circumstances, whether or not it was the right choice was still a question. Plus, he was mildly curious; talking about it wouldn't change the past, but it was still an interesting what if to discuss. When Chance admitted to having met Oliver, Ripley gave a small smile.

"Draw him in a dinosaur costume. He'd love it." The kid was always wearing dinosaur-themed t-shirts, so it didn't seem like much of a stretch to him. "Either that or Finn with a snickers." Ah, that lovely old inside joke was the best. He watched the other man sketch in silence, preferring to listen to nothing but the steady beep of monitors and the constant scratch of pencil to paper.

"You know, you're pretty good looking, yourself." He said quietly - and certainly belatedly - to the other man. It didn't seem right to not compliment him back, especially since it was the truth.

Chance hummed a little, thinking it over for a moment. "Probably not," he said, and smiled over at Ripley. "I'm not really a big regrets person in general, and though I do wish my self-defense was a little less pathetic than it is, I think I like having a quiet hobby like this."

A snort escaped him, Chance shaking his head. He added one more line to Ripley's glasses and then carefully tore the page out and set it on the bedside table beside the other drawing. "I'll do both," Chance said decidedly, and started with the Oliver one first, trying to remember the way the trainee's hair looked from memory.

At the unexpected compliment, however, Chance's eyes flickered briefly up to Ripley, raising his eyebrows. "Thanks," he said mildly, the smallest hint of amusement in his voice as he added, "I was thinking I might do something to my hair eventually, make it less flat colored."

"I see." Ripley mused, finding the choice interesting. Somehow it wasn't surprising, but it was still very interesting as a whole. Someone who lived without many regrets, and who would make the same choices, knowing how it would turn out? That seemed rare to him, but rather delightful.

He glanced down at the finished picture of himself, feeling somewhat odd to see his own likeness back at him. Especially since he wasn't a fan of pictures, which only made it feel worse. It was great work, just strange for him, that was all. He was glad to see someone else as the subject though, and he went right back to watching the sketching process, amused at how seemingly random lines turned into something substantial and rather detailed.

"You're thinking of dying it?" His head tilted a little bit, gaze moving along the curls as if imagining it.

He was unaware of Ripley's inner musings, but the two words offered to him in place of an expression made the corners of Chance's lips quirk upwards in amusement. Bent over his notebook and ignoring the twinge of pain across his stomach, he added a few spikes to the back of the dinosaur costume.

"Maybe," he answered, tilting his head slightly. "I was thinking maybe a dark blue, or shades of blue. Nothing too bright, I'm not a big fan of neon colors," he added with a laugh. "No pink or orange or anything like that. But dark blue could be fun."

"It'd look good on you." It would match his eyes, anyway. At least a little bit. But the excluded colours made him smile a bit, however momentarily sad it might have been.

"Before..." He trailed off, almost uncomfortably, before he rerouted his train of thought. "...I was recruited, we had a fund raiser. The deal was, if we raised a thousand dollars for this sick kid's charity, I'd dye my hair. At two thousand, they could vote for the colour." The thought was as ridiculous now as it was then, and at the time it was a grudging sense of duty that allowed such a childish thing, but now? He'd give almost anything to go back and make good on his promise.

But, alas, to them he was dead, buried, and likely long forgotten.

"They raised three. They chose pink. It was almost unanimous." Guess the community really wanted to see him in pink hair. The memory was a nice one, though it was still quite sad to him. "Never got around to it, though." The fire happened. His dark spiral happened. Deus happened.

Chance's eyes flickered upwards as he lifted his free hand, tugging at a stray curl. "You think?" he asked thoughtfully, tilting his head a little, and then he dropped his fingers away, looking mildly pleased. "Well, maybe I'll go through with it, then."

Ripley's smile - however small and brief - wasn't missed, and it was silently and secretively appreciated, since those were few and far between. Chance let his gaze rest on the other man, slightly surprised by the sudden volunteer of information. He listened silently, every now and then adding a few more details to Oliver's face or the dinosaur suit, and occasionally lifting a hand to brush away a few strands of hair out of his eyes.

"An interesting concept," he said finally, "A good one, I mean. Dying your hair to encourage fundraising is a pretty positive thing. But I will admit that you having pink hair would have changed my entire first opinion of you, not gonna lie."

The last part of it was said with a gentle teasing note to it, Chance adding the finishing touches to the Oliver drawing before he began work on the Finn one. "We weren't allowed to dye our hair at the boy's home; some rule about chemicals and things. Some of the others probably would have abused the privilege somehow. I thought about it after I left and got my own place, but...never got around to that either."

A moment of silence, and then, "I like the white, though. Makes you look sophisticated."
