"You would be wise to watch your tongue girl," Savarah snapped to Vosin, her lips pressing together in a fine line of controlled anger. "Of course times are difficult for us but we wouldn't be here at all if we had continued to bow to the Weyrs and their foolish ways! They believe that riders such as myself should automatically bow to riders such as Anali and A'nos merely because their dragons shine, and that anyone without a dragon is barely worth considering at all! Ha, they even restrict their golds to breeding and domestic management without a thought for other talents they might have, others dreams they might like to chase! How would you feel - bold girl - if you Impressed a gold in a Weyr and learned that you would spend most of your days within the walls of the Weyr counting tithes? Would that life suit you? Would life life of a green rider within a Weyr suit you any better? We took a stand for what is right, for what is just, and if that is screwing ourselves then so be it!"

The Councillor paused there for a moment, scanning the faces of the candidates with hardened eyes.

"Times are hard and we riders of the wherholds are fewer than all of the riders in Trine Weyr but we are stronger than they are. Because of the hardships we face and because we allow people to take the places that suit them best rather than consigning them to a role in life based on only the colour of their bondmate I believe that we have the greatest Thread fighting force on the face of Pern. No matter the squalls and the fall of the Thread we shall prevail and our numbers shall grow not only from clutches but from riders fleeing the oppression of the Weyrwomen and Weyrleaders. Mark my works Vosin, by the time you are my age the ways of the Weyrs will be dying out while ours spread to all corners of the continents."

xxThe girl couldn't help but overhear the dripping venom in the councillor's voice and her head instinctively ducked, her hazel eyes flashing a look towards the one being berated. What did she say? She wondered. Kalendol tilted her head and once more pressed her lips firmly together, her index finger pressed against the full lines as she considered what had been said. Personally, it might be cool to be a crimson rider. She had no high hopes of gaining the privilege of a gold, that would be folly without dragon riders' blood running through her veins. Just keep your ears open, Kalendol. Quite honestly, she was rather moved by the councillor's speech though. Benden Weyr is stronger because of their uprising. Even with fewer dragons, it makes sense, in a strange way. They must be extra happy with these dragons being born then. She thought and then a small smile touched the red-head's face and she remained quiet, calmly waiting for the green rider to acknowledge her apology and question.

Her eyes widened a bit as Savarah jumped down her throat verbally. Maybe it hadn't been the best way to phrase it. Still, Vos straightened and stood her ground. "Your pardon Lady Savarah, but this is a question session. I'd rather be an informed candidate rather than an ignorant rider." Talk about putting the tunnelsnake among the clutch!

Vos approved of the wherhold's theoretical idea that all colors be treated equal and given rank based upon merits and not just dragon color. Maybe the Weyrs weren't right in their traditional ways. However, she didn't see all the other weyrs jumping in over to their ways either. So did that mean neither way was truly right? Vos thought it was perspective. Some held solely to tradition, and others wanted a totally new way, even if it wasn't as good as they might have thought.

The teen tilted her head. The woman was certainly fired up, and Vos wondered if she sensed a hint of a grudge laying under it all. "Easy, I wouldn't let them." Vos hoped it was easy as she'd made it sound. Greens weren't looked on with too much favor, but they were free in their own ways. She had to grin though at the pep talk that followed. Although she wasn't totally convinced that weyrs, weyrleaders, and weyrwomen would be a thing of the past by the time she was that old, Vos didn't say anything. She had some ideas to work on.
