Unfortunately for me, I knew it was going to happen, but I was blown away when it did happen because it sorta caught me off-guard.
I bet that if I didn't know, I would've taken it differently. I will admit that it brought a tear to my eye. That was so unfair, and the music was so perfectly suited for that scene.
A truly powerful and moving scene, dare I say it is still unmatched by any other game to date.

Well, it's kinda odd to say. I was only eight when the game came out, and at the time, I didn't really play video games as much as I watched my brother play them. So I had kept up with the entire storyline, and Aeris was my favorite character, and then suddenly... I think I cried really hard when I first watched that scene. ^_^ Even when I replayed it again recently, I still shed a tear. The fact that we still talk about it now, almost a decade later, speaks volumes about how well the creators gave life to their characters and story.
(PS: I read in an interview once with one of the creators of FFVII, who said he had seen many Final Fantasies kill characters off. Most often it happened with little reaction from the audience. He said that the fact that people complained about Aeris' death, and became indignant about such an important character dying, meant that his mission was accomplished. ^_^)

The first time i played it i had no idea. It was such a great twist, i definatly did not see it comin. It was this plit twist that perhaps made this my favorite game. It really gave u something to angry at Sephiroth for. You could share in Cloud's obsessive hatred of him.
Damn... what a great game

I knew she died before I played the game. My friend told me. Anyways, I glad shes gone. I hated her. When I entered the forest temple, I said 'Bye Aries!'. When I entered the Forgotten Capital, I said 'Damn it Aries, if you don't die now, I will kill you! After I impregnate Yuffie with my sword for taking my Materia, but your on the list too!'

Red XIII is number 1. Vincent is 2nd.

When i first played, I didn't know. But she was way to powerful and i figured something had to happen to her, like she would become evil or something. Then she died and that was a shocker. Now all it does is piss me off and i barly ever use her knowing she is gunna die.

Yup. I knew Aeris died before playing it. I only played it while at my cousins when I was a kid (which wasn't very often since he lived a few hours away from where I lived, and I only had Nintendo game systems when I was a kid). And my cousin told me, since when I first saw Aeris (he was playing at the time) I looked at him and asked him "Doesn't she die in this game?", he answered quickly with a " Yeah, Sephiroth kills her.".
That and the previews I saw before playing the game always showed when Cloud was laying Aeris into the lifestream.

It frustrates the heck outa me, but every single time I get someone to play this game, they find out that Aeris is going to die. No one knows anything else that spoils the game's story, but everyone knows that she is going to die. Even I knew it, I don't remember who told me.

soadshuyin First time through I had no idea. I think I cried. Same here but I still shed a tear when I replay... crying I did not see that coming. I didn't know the most innocent character in the game was gonna get whacked by Sephiroth...he did all that and I still love him, strange. *shrugs* Oh well...

Sadly, I knew...I would have loved not knowing...The 'thrill' of it, so sudden and painful. But even so, it was very emotional...I remember friends, before I played it, saying they cried, one even said they almost had to turn their PS off because it upset them so much. So, I definately KNEW it was going to happen...But Aerith grew on me so much over the game, that even knowing, added a dread to the enjoyment of the game.
Whatever the case, even knowing this huge spoilor, it doesn't ruin the game whatsoever, and continues to be one of the greatest games of all times, imo.

i had no idea but i didnt care to much because she wasnt a character i was gonna use. My cousin was pissed though because she was using her alot and was forced to train a replacement.
