For a narrow cave, there wasn't a lot. He found a small handful of stones on a small hole of sorts in the wall, and he picked them out before pocketing them.
As predicted, the smaller caves didn't have much in the way of materials, and he only managed to collect 2 more stones. He might have wiped out the area in which he was exploring.
Near the end of how far he wanted to really go, he paused, looked to where Noah was still weaving in and out of caves, and went inside the last few caves he was at. After that was a clinging wall of seaweed he really didn't want to go near. The small patches were dangerous enough.
At the last cave, he managed to find a nice handful and once he placed the rocks inside, he closed his bag, adjust the strap and swam back out.
Done with his exploring, he swam back down to see how Noah was doing and to just watch and offer his support. Hopefully the man wasn't too exhausted.

Noah can keep exploring. I'm just done with rolls now. Met my goal.

Noah saw Melvin swimming back up with a heavy bag, and held his bag up to show that he was doing well, even if he hadn't collected as many stones as Melvin seemed to have collected. He should probably keep trying.
The cave was full of a liberal scatter of stones; Noah sorted through them, finding several that were about the right size and shape. Quite a few more were not quite large enough, and two broke as he picked them up. He left those behind and swam back out.

Melvin seemed to be finished, just waiting for Noah now. Noah checked his air gauge and found that the tank was starting to get low. He needed to finish his task so they could get back to the surface. He swam into the cave beside the one he'd just searched.

It proved to be not the best of choices. Only a few stones lay on the cave floor, and only two of them were suitable. Still, two was better than none, and Noah exited the cave with the bag slightly heavier.

One more. Noah ducked into the next cave, determined to find just a couple more stones.

The cave was dim, and Noah blinked as his eyes adjusted. The back of the cave looked kind of weird, and he swam closer to find out why.
Tentacles shot out and grabbed him. They twisted around his arms and legs, and where they touched skin, they stung. He kicked and struggled, but they wouldn't release him until he summoned Laz and chopped at them; after that they let go hurriedly and retreated into the tangled mass that had looked superficially like a rock wall from a distance.
He kept Laz summoned until he had exited the cave safely, then let the weapon return to his unsummoned form. He felt sore and tired and he was starting to be worried about the amount of air left in the tank. He swam back over to where Melvin drifted in the water and pointed up, then drew a question mark in the water. Time to go up?

Find a place where you can reach the most perfect calm and focus possible, and then begin carving Uruz into each of your stones. Think on the purpose of the stone, and meaning of Uruz as you do so. Focus as much of yourself and your actions on the rune and the act of carving. Some people choose to chant out loud or do visual exercises to more perfectly focus on the task, but different methods work best for different people. Once the rune begins to glow, you'll know it's finished. Because this process depends more on people than lab computers and code, it's less consistent and predictable in its results.
Roll 1d10 for each rune stone 1-4: failure! The runestone never glows and eventually breaks. 5-8: Regular Rune! The runestone can power small, battery-operated runic devices for up to a week. 9-10: Superior Rune! The runestone can charge your runic weapons. (In and out of battle. If in battle, it will take 5 turns for the weapon to properly charge.)

Melvin smiled and nodded, pointing up and turning. Luckily there were no creatures on the way up, and as long as they had been diving combined with as much energy they consumed, he really was glad he wasn't going to tango with a angry angler fish today. He was already tired.
Breaking the surface of the water, he took off his mask and watched as Noah popped up from the surface. "Good job. You did well. Let's head back to the base and drop this equipment off."
He headed back to shore. By the time he got back and they dropped their equipment back at the Sun equipment room, he was starving. Swimming for nearly 2 hours used up a lot of energy and he was looking forward to eating. "How about we break for 2 hours and meet back at the greenhouse. I'll bring the tools you need. It will be a nice, quiet place for us to carve."
With that he left Noah. After a shower, a meal, and a brief nap, he went to the greenhouse and set up. He brought the two chairs, once only used by him and Rin to work, and set them side by side. He set a plastic case he used to store his stones and then placed his satchel of rocks on the ground.
He had brought some coffee and set it on the table and when Noah showed up, smiled.
"I've got the small carving tools you need and a simple instruction sheet they give you to carve what you need." He set it down for Noah to look at to give him a guide on how to carve the symbol he needed.
He sat down and grabbed a pile of stones. "It's all about concentration and trying to get the marking as perfect as possible. With these little chisels, it is a little hard. Chipping away at rocks isn't easy. I'll start."
He started to work on one rock but it was a failure. "Uh, well, even with weeks of doing this, it's still hard." He set the failure to the side and tried another, but he only did slightly better but it wasn't a success either.
Then, during the third rock, he managed to make a perfect stone and held it up. It glowed a unnatural blue, one that was familiar with any runiced item. "See. Just needed to warm up. You want something like this." He set the stone and started to work.
"It's good to fine a nice, quiet place to work. The runic department will let you sit there sometimes to carve and they have some nice references there if you can't find a place. You can come here too if you want. Once you get the hang of it, I'd suggest getting a case. Carrying rocks around gets rough, and once you carve them, you don't want them scraping against each other or breaking in some old bag."
Melvin put a few stones he carved into his plastic carrying case and continued. The strong blue glowing from inside the plastic storage case created another light among the table and shined against the glass panes of the greenhouse.
"Some people like to zone out. I like using music. Sometimes the quiet is nice. It's whatever is best for you to concentrate. Also, take breaks." He looked over to Noah.
"Carving and then having these things light up can start hurting your eyes. When you get a big batch like this, you're eyes will start stinging like hell and you'll see blue lights in your sleep. It doesn't help for getting any rest so don't go to bed right after this." He rubbed his eyes under his glasses before putting another rock away.
