Sarras found himself scoffing at Ankh's display, not out of disrespect for the old but tough man, but perhaps because he was feeling a sense of denial swelling within him. Smart thinking on the Uranus' knights had stopped the machine and once Ankh went in, there was no way in hell that they'd convince her to get the machine going again, so fear of the man being crushed were far from his mind. If anything, Sarras was just too insecure to want to see such a sentimental display before someone lunged himself into danger, and that only fed into his denial.

"Don't talk like that," Sarras said, offering a crooked smile and letting others hear his thick, Texan accent, as if that might have helped boost the morale and confidence in their predicament. He watched in silence when Ankh powered down and set his personal effects on the floor, speaking only when he was looking at the Pluto page once more. "You've done a great job leading us thus far and you're gonna come right back out just fine."

He didn't concern himself with the others except Falias and Ankh for the moment- if they'd listen to his command and leave, fine. If they didn't, and things went horribly (heaven forbid), then that was their decision. He wrapped part of the rope around his wrist, determined to fasten it to him in some manner, and then held his ground. "Good luck."

YOU HAVE TRIGGERED A DEADLY TRAP!

The figure's sobs increase in volume as Ankh maneuvered closer, through the gears, over long poles leading deeper into the machine, until he finally finds the figure hunched over on the floor, in a small clear space within the engine. There is an unidentified red liquid leaking slowly from its torso where it had been caught in the machine, and its shoulders shake sharply with the force of its sobs.

At Ankh's words, it falls silent and tips its face up. There are no eyes in that face, no mouth--he might as well be looking at a living doll. A child's toy, maybe.

It sobs again, a little hiccup, the voice of a fourteen-year-old girl echoing strangely in the cramped space. Its body shimmers for a moment, replaced by a pale-haired girl with bright blue eyes, nondescript dark clothes, pale skin. She opens her mouth for a moment, closes it, looks down--and the illusion is gone.

Then it lunges for Ankh's throat, blade-sharp fingers wide and grasping.

Ankh Page has died. Shazari, please post your death solo here, and thank you for playing!

Trigger Warning/Content Warning: Graphic Violence/Gore/Character Death

It was slow going inside the machine. Ankh wasn't the tiniest member of their group, but he managed to squeeze himself, space by space, deeper into the bowels of the contraption, till at last he thought he'd reached the figure and the device piece. The sobs were right in front of him, and he came to a stop, pointing his flashlight beam upward, to find the figure --

-- yes, there it was. Hunched over, sobbing, maybe bleeding.

He spoke, keeping his voice low, hoping to get the device piece -- and then it picked up its head.

It wasn't real. It wasn't human -- it sobbed without eyes to weep, and moaned without mouth to cry out. Then, like a template that was being rewritten to take on a new face, it shimmered into the form of a young girl.

"It ain't real!" he called out to the group, hoping they could still hear him from this far in. "It's a -- "

Before he could finish his sentence, the illusion of the young girl was gone again, leaving him with the figure once more. This close up, he could see that its fingers weren't fingers so much as they were long, bladed things.

And they were reaching for him.

The figure lunged at him, and he stepped back. "RUN!" he yelled at the top of his voice, hoping someone could still hear -- hoping they'd gotten that other door open. In the narrow space, there was nowhere to go -- the inner walls of the machine met his back, and as the figure closed in, he brought up both hands to try and grab its arms, to hold it off --

-- without Ankh's thumb to hold it down, the little flashlight winked off, dropping to the ground --

"RUN!!!" he screamed in the dark, grappling blindly, overpowered. "RUN!!!"

If he couldn't see in the dark, the figure, maybe, could; regardless, it knew where Ankh's throat had gone -- and he felt its smooth fingers cleaving his skin, burying agony deep there, slicing through his vocal chords till he couldn't scream anymore -- then it ripped them back apart, taking his jugular vein with it and severing his head half off.

He fell forward in the small space, slumping against the figure's inhuman shoulder. He tried to cough, once, breathlessly and without success -- then he stopped moving.

Somewhere, a woman was folding laundry and humming to herself. A teakettle was whistling. An old man's rosebushes were growing -- a silly hobby he'd picked up because Carolyn said he was too underfoot all the time since he'd retired. Somewhere, a life went on without him, and the world was wild and beautiful, and grass stains and cigarette ash came out in the wash, and home was the very best place to come back to.

Somewhere.

Not here.

His query about a light source or light-making magic had been met with silence and Falias had taken the silence as an answer in itself, that is that no - none of the others had managed to pick up a light source from the other two rooms.

The sudden blip of one of the Page level auras winking out had him confused, but it was soon back again - and from sound of it, it had been the Pluto Page (Ankh) who had been the one to do it. There was a jangling, clinking sound of something metallic being set down, followed by sudden light - the source that of one of those little 'push down' flash lights.

It wasn't that much light, the little flash light giving off barely enough light to illuminate his immediate surroundings, but he was close enough to the Pluto Page to be able to see the items indicated and to see the nearby red-haired Page (Sarras), to see the other's crooked Page.

"We're all going to come out of this just fine" he agreed, as he added his voice to that of the other man. "We've come this far after all" and much as he'd taken an dislike to the Pluto Page following the other man's 'kid' comment, even Falias had to admit, if only to himself, that it was down to the Pluto Page's leadership.

The red-haired Page was holding the rope and the Pluto Page was starting to disappear into the stopped machine after the sobbing figure so Falias took the opportunity whilst he still had the glow of the light to add "Can a couple of you try to get that other door open and give me a shout if you need a hand." The Pluto Page had directed his comment to the Mars Squire and the Mercury Page by her - but Falias was directing it at whoever was closest. "Maybe with the power off we can get it open that much easier."

After that there was nothing to do but wait and then wait some more and in darkness as the Pluto Page had the only light source.

Then the sobbing sound suddenly stopped and Falias assumed that the Pluto Page had managed to find the figure. It wouldn't be long now... he told himself, knowing how resourceful the older man was and confident that other would make his way back soon with figure and piece in tow.

It was only when he heard the yelling for them to run that Falias realised that something had gone wrong - horribly wrong. "Pull him out!" he yelled at the red-haired Page (Sarras). "Pull him out!"

As another yell came for them all to run, this one more scream than yell and Falias' voice was more than a little panicked as he yelled "Get him out of there now!"

Falias seemed to catch on to his game and was offering the older man, as well as those around them, some confidence despite the grim situation, and if anything, Sarras' respect for the Earth squire grew had doubled. There was no need to be going into this with their spirits already broken, right? Whether Falias was truly confident that Ankh would be alright or if he was like Sarras and hiding his doubt behind a fierce bravado was a mystery to the Cosmos page, but he was truly hoping for the best as they watched him go in.

The crying stopped, and then Ankh started screaming a terrifying, three letter word, a word that Sarras did NOT like.

'Well s**t...'

Not that he was going to run! Even when Ankh was screaming at them, Falias' shouts were by far louder and an easier pill to swallow, and he wasted no time in pulling. "Hang on, we're pulling you back up! Don't you dare be dead, old man!"

Not that it would be very comforting. He began to pull at the ropes, not liking just how dead weight he and Falias were pulling up. The device' whereabouts were lost on him and years stalking and hunting game made him very familiar to the smell that assaulted his nose as he and Falias fished the Pluto page out.

'Oh no... that's blood.'

"Kids, you heard him. Run, get the ******** out of here, now!"

YOU HAVE TRIGGERED A DEADLY TRAP!

GORE WARNING

The rope goes limp abruptly, and then as Sarras pulls, it comes back quickly. Too quickly, too lightly. There is nothing attached, and for a long moment there is nothing but wet, sloppy sounds from inside the engine, and muffled sobbing, and--and silence.

There are unsteady footsteps and harsh breathing. The steps stutter, they slow, they pick up into a run. Whoever it is, they don't speak. Their breathing is coming from everywhere, from all the speakers that the figure's voice had been leaking from.

Burj Khalifa Page feels the caress of soft, small fingers just before she is eviscerated--and then Hogwarts is next, a hand with bladed fingers crunching around his throat.

Then silence, and the sounds of... something... being torn...

You have a reprieve. What do you do?

Burj Khalifa Page and Hogwarts Page have died. Sami-Fire and Ruriska, please post your death solos here, and thank you for playing!

Piggy looked around, trying to keep her breathing even. It was next to pitch dark in the room, but even so, she could see when the pair of pages fell. The squire bit back a swear. At least-- she thought desperately.

At least---

At least the creatures was out of the machine. It was in the room with them, but it was out of the machine. And the device - maybe the device was still in there.

If she went into the machine, she decided, at least she'd be away from the figure and its horrible breathing and the terror.

"I'm going in," said Piggy, pushing ahead to the machine. Working by feel alone, she followed Ankh's path in. God - it was sticky. It was sticky and wet and were those- were those entrails? She felt around in the dark, breathing quickening, and her hands finally connected with the old man's keychain. She got the flashlight working and peered around in search of the device piece.

Knights of Mars were meant to be brave. Knights of Mars had war and dust in their blood. She could do this! "Where is it," she whispered, with rising panic, in hopes that the figure had not come back for her.

Content Warning: the gorey death of Burj Khalifa Page.

Burj Khalifa, who had faithfully followed Ankh's orders up this this point, did not have time to follow his final one.

Her head whipped frantically back and forth, trying to find the source of the sounds but confused by the fact that it was coming from everywhere. After her second look to the right, she felt the touch of fingers on her left...

Only the briefest of gasps escaped her lips before she was carved apart, at which point a scream wrenched its way out of her. She collapsed to the floor on top of her rapidly-pooling blood. Some gurgling noises came out of her, and thus, Burj Khalifa came to an end.

It would only be a matter of time before the very protective Mel that she loved encouraged her estranged family to file a missing person's report... or, rather, filed it herself.

Sarras wasn't sure what he was expecting when he and Falias pulled on the ropes, though he knew by the smell of blood that it couldn't have been good. What he wasn't expecting was the rope to come up so quickly, and he didn't need light to know that there'd be no Ankh on the other end. Ankh was gone, and by the feel of blood... he would not be coming back.

Pigfarts volunteered to go after him, and his first instincts were to grab her and reign her back in, but the heaving breathing that echoed throughout the halls unnerved him, forcing him still and allowing the Mars knight to go.

More blood hit his nose, then the sound of something being torn...

"Sh...s**t... we need lights! Where's that remote control? Burj! You got it, right? We need the lights back on, now!" He shouted, hoping none of his fear could be heard, only anger and authority. What he did know was that he was shouting to a dead woman... nor where Pigfarts had gone. They needed the lights!

Content Warning: This post is a reaction post to a previous character's death (Burj Khalifa). Warning for some gore and for lots of mention of blood

At some point Falias had stumbled forward to give the red-haired Page (Sarras) a hand with the intention of giving the other man a hand with hauling on the rope, whilst ignoring the fact that the Pluto Page's screams had stopped.

He wasn't going there.

One of the Page level auras had winked out too, but Falias wasn't going there either. Instead he reached for the rope...

But he'd needn't have bothered, as the rope was coming back and quickly. Too quickly a part of his mind told him before he could squelch the thought.

Not going there he told himself. I'm NOT going there! Although it was hard to continue to hold on to denial when the rope came back empty and the metallic coppery scent of blood from the blood-slicked end assaulted his nostrils. At the sound of wet sloppy sounds coming from the machine however, even he had to admit the fact that the Pluto Page had gone and that the aura that had winked out had winked out forever.

"We need to get out of here" he managed to get out and then as he heard the footsteps and harsh breathing coming this way he yelled "Get back, all of you and try to get that door open! We need to get out now!"

A voice said something about going into the machine and he yelled "No, go help the others!" And then as someone shouted out something about getting the lights back on changed it to "Actually see if you can help with that remote" before adding in a quieter voice as he stood his ground. "I'll.. I'll buy some time."

Not that he was expecting to be able to do much, but Falias planned to buy all the time he could - as much as possible so the others could get the door open.

Or at least that had been the plan, however he hadn't counted on just how fast the thing coming their way was or calculated in how hard trying to calculate direction was in the darkness.

It was hard to miss the sound of harsh breathing though, but it was not a good pointer of where to go - not with the way it seemed to be coming from all around them.

So in the end he picked a direction and stumbled left through the darkness from where a scream had come from, but hadn't gone far before he stumbled across something warm but yielding and smelt more of that metallic coppery smell.

"Sorry" he shifted backwards and felt out automatically, meaning to give the other a hand and then his hand touched something wet. Felt the jagged tear and his mind went blank.

"s**t!" He scrambled backwards, wasn't even aware of doing so, topmost thought that of putting space between him and the body on the ground.

"s**t!" As Falias moved backwards, the smell moved with him and he realised that it was because it was on his clothes.. On his hands...

He hadn't been paying any attention to the direction he was going in, just on getting away, from the dead woman on the ground and from the fact that two more Page auras had winked out.

Then there was a sudden click as he stepped backwards on 'something', the sound sounding very loud in his ears as the harsh breathing suddenly went unnaturally silent.

Warning: Mistral used Avada Kedavra on Hogwarts. Character death and blood!

Hogwarts was waiting, cautiously hopefully and more than a little bit worried about Ankh going into the machine. At least the older Knight had more strength and experience to rely on. Soon he’d appear, with the strange being in tow and they’d all work on a way to get out…

"RUN!!!"

The Page didn’t move a muscle at first. Instead he stiffened in panic, like a deer caught in headlights, breath caught in his throat. The cries grew ever desperate until there was only an ominous silence.

"N-n-no," Hogwarts gasped, finally spurred into awkward motion. He looked desperately, first at Falias and then at Sarras. "We have to get him out. We have to save him! W-we have to… w-we… uh… Ankh, hang on!"

Then the rope was back and the sounds from the machine were making him want to throw up and it was dark and he was scared and he was only vaguely aware that he had started crying at some point.

"I want to go home now. I have to walk my dog. It’s okay if I just go home now, right? It was great playing but you know, school tomorrow. G-gotta study and the shower is still on and-"

Then Burj Khalifa screamed.

I’m going to die.

The thought came through with perfect clarity and he only had time to pray that it was quick and it wouldn't hurt before he was struck.

The only sound Hogwarts made as his throat was ripped straight through was a wet gargle. He slid to his knees first and then sideways, body numb with shock. He was aware, if only for a brief second, that the creature was starting on the rest of him and he was both dismayed and angry.

But it was so brief because he didn't have time for thoughts anymore.

I don’t want to…

Then there was nothing more.

YOU HAVE TRIGGERED A DEADLY TRAP!

GORE WARNING

A stranger's voice--no, no, not a stranger, it's Mistral's voice, the page from Olympus--shouts, "The lights! You have to turn them back on!" and, for a moment, the wet tearing sounds pause. Something metallic scrapes along the floor for a moment, and then stops. It all stops, and goes completely, eerily silent.

Piggy finds the device piece, a boxy shape with a hinge on the top. It is clean, except for a fine misting of blood. What else is found in the small crawlspace does not bear examination.

Falias steps on the remote, and it splits in two--but not before the lights flicker back on, and there is a terrible, wrenching scream of metal on metal, a terrible dark arterial spray of blood from within the machine. Too, there is a spray of metal, the shards peppering Hollow Bastion Page and severing too many important arteries for him to be saved.

Crouched on the floor among them is a tiny blonde girl with bright, glowing blue eyes. She looks like a Mercury page.

The lights are restored, and there is a stranger among you with no aura. What do you do?

Pigfarts Squire and Hollow Bastion Page have died. Silverah and Poddly Pood, please post your death solos here, and thank you for playing!

Death solo for Pigfarts Page - death and gore warning!

"I've got it!" exclaimed Pigfarts excitedly, her hands closing around the device piece. Moving quickly as she could inside the crawl space, she turned herself around and started back for the exit, her prize clenched triumphantly in her right hand. "Guys! I've got it!"

Above her, the machine groaned. Piggy paused, looking up, shining the tiny flashlight upwards towards the great gears. They had begun to move. "Hey!" she called, moving a little faster now. "I'm still in here! I'm still in here! Stop!"

Something - hard, metallic, heavy - came down on her ankle with tremendous pressure. Pigfarts cried out as she felt bone crack and splinter. Stars exploded in front of her eyes as her flesh ripped. She hobbled forward, faster now. "Stop it!" Piggy screamed. A gear crunched down across her thighs.

The squire screamed again, this time wordlessly. Even if she could escape, she'd be beyond saving. Desperately, the part clasped in her outstretched hand, she scrabbled towards the now-bright exit of the crawl space.

With a great grinding of metal, part of the machine came down on her head, silencing the girl's wails.

A moment later, her gloved hand, still clasping its hard-won prize, severed from the arm just below a slightly mangled bracer with a mars sigil on it, fell to the ground at Falias's feet.

Gore reaction!

Isengard froze when Ankh started climbing through the gears, which seemed like a terrible idea. It was worse since she couldn't see. Eyes staring blankly into the darkness, she clasped her trembling hands together and hoped with everything she had that nothing would go wrong. It didn't work. When he screamed to run, she listened, bolting away from his desperate voice. That didn't work either. She held out her hands and they hit the wall hard, making her pause, breathing hard with fear.

That was when the screams started, real ones this time, combined with footsteps and panicked breathing and curses and other sounds she didn't want to put words to, that she was trying her hardest to ignore, but she couldn't. It was an awful, gross ripping sound, like from a horror movie, and it was very close to her. She felt warm blood splatter on her uniform and pressed herself to the wall, eyes shut, full on sobbing now.

When the lights came on and she turned around, she screamed.

She didn't register the death right away, the fact that these people would never smile at her again or give orders or live the rest of their lives. The bloody mess was enough as much as she could take, and the lights came back on just in time for her to see blood explode from the gears.

"Eww..." she said, not feeling very steady on her feet all of a sudden. It was all she could manage.

"What... What happened?" She sort of stumbled over to the last Mercury page still standing, Menae, trying and failing not to look at the ground. The actual death was starting to register at that point, and she shuttered as she stepped around a pile of bloody remains.

Then, she finally noticed that there was something in the middle of the room. Someone, really- another Mercury page? Isengard was't the best at auras, but she knew there was something off about this. The amount of bodies made her cautious. Actually, terrified, but nobody was dying at this exact second.

"Hello?" She asked, because maybe it could talk, it looked like a girl. "Are you okay? Are you going to kill us?" Obviously, that was the top thing on her mind.

CW: Reaction to character death, mentions of blood and gore

When she heard Ankh's yells from within the machine, Menae rapidly moved away, horror clutching in her chest. Stupid, stupid, stupid, she'd bought into this poor little AI's sobbing and cryin, believed that it might be a good robot that could help them.

She was wrong, and if Ankh's death hadn't proven it, then Burj's and Hogwarts's did. The girl started to shake, tiny little whimpers coming from her lips. Warm blood splattered all over her - from Ankh or Burj or Hogwarts or maybe from poor Piggy, caught in the ears when that monster machine turned back on.

Menae ran for the device piece, scooping it up and throwing it towards Falias.

"Make sure that gets out," the little Page said, her voice firm, and then she turned on the not-Mercury-Page sitting on the ground.

"That - that thing is a monster! It killed Ankh, and Burj, and Hoggy - we need to destroy it while the lights are on, so it can't get the rest of us!" It didn't matter that it looked like a little girl, like a Page of her own planet, like someone her own age she could have been friends with. It was a Weeping Angel, or something like it - and it needed to die to save the rest of them.
