Hmm you know, I read Anne Rice's Lestat a while ago, which I liked. Not loved; liked lol. Kept reminding me of the movie Interview with the Vampire rolleyes But I actually prefer Hamilton's books over all of Anne Rice's. Not just because Rice's books were made into movies--Queen of the Damned, Interview with the Vampire and maybe another one but because I believe Hamilton has more sensual characters and each of the plots somehow nearly revolve around each other. So all in all, Hamilton wins against Rice :]

I got halfway through Interview with a Vampire before I had to stop reading it. It was soo depressing! I don't know if I want to read any more Anne Rice books. I like when I can connect with the main character a bit and when the author seems to have a sense of humor. Laurell K. Hamilton's work is great! Anita Blake's personality makes the book a little more amusing to read.

I actually have to agree with almost everything you said. I can read Anne Rice, but sometimes I feel like it is drawn out enough to make me tired. Laurell K. Hamilton's style always has me on the edge of my seat. I have hard time putting down the books.

I seem to be like the odd one out here. I seriously can't say that I like one more than the other. I love them both for very different reasons.

As people have said, Anne Rice is very detail oriented. But I like that. I want to be immersed in the world and action. I've noticed that sometimes the lack of detail in the surroundings and whatnot that LKH uses leaves me out of sorts as to the exact action going on. I want to see the whole scene and the action in it in my mind. If something is not qute described enough, it can throw me off.

But then, as others have said, LKH's action and humor are wonderful. As well as the way she develops even the smallest characters so that you can imagine them as real people that actually exist. Of course, there's the sex issue. Personally, I love it. I'm tired of movies and tv shows and books being all... "oh, no not sex. we can hint at it but not really show or describe anything." UGH! I wish people weren't so uptight about things like that sometimes.

Anne Rice, as long and sometimes boring as her books tend to be, should be highly respected. You have not heard of Vampires until you have read her work or watched the movies based off of them. I would say, though, if you cannot deal with reading Charles Dickens due to his extreme dedication to literary development, you should skip ever trying to read Anne Rice. But, we as a society, should understand the role which Rice has given the Vampire, that she has made the Vampire into the creature we know today. She is the mother of the modern Vampire, and for that we must admire her.

But that doesn't mean I don't love Laurell K. Hamilton more.

In my opinion it all depends on what writing style and type of characters you prefer.
Laurell K. Hamilton's writing style and characters are more modern.
While Anne Rice's writing style and characters range from modern to 17th century France.

It really all depends what you like.
I personally can not choose who I like more.
If I feel like reading a raunchy, action packed novel I read LKH.
if I feel like reading something dramatic and poetic I read Anne Rice.

Personally I love Anne Rice but I will admit that at times I can't stand how whiny Lestat can be and I haven't been able to read past Queen of the Damned in the series because her novels tend to drag out. I have never read Laurell K. Hamilton so I don't have an opinion on her work yet.

I love them both. If I read one i get sucked into that world and well as the other. I have really only met one particular vampire series I couldn't stand. I love Anne because she puts peices of her life into each book. I love Laurell because she puts peices of her personality into Anita. I never read Merry so I have no opinon about her.

I can honestly say that I cannot compare the two. The reason being is that the only Anne Rice I have read are the Beauty Books and Exit to Eden. twisted

I don't find myself too big of an Anne Rice fan, but I am absolutely obsessed with Laurell K. Hamilton's work. As for comparing them, I find it unfair, though many things aren't. My point is just this, their styles are so different with such a different feel for the story that there just isn't floor space to do it. Though they both do have paranormal running crazy in their pages and have some similar points to it, I find that it just isn't there for comparison. But then again, maybe that's just me...?
