A flashback to the hunter tournament reminded her of just how much Gale like claiming those rewards, and she grinned into her arm self-consciously. "Good! Think happy thoughts too," Stormy reminded him as his fingers swept along her face. "Think them hard enough and maybe you'll get to fly with her! That'd be a real 'welcome home' sight."

She paused again, then tilted her head to the other side, half to imprison Gale's hand as her new pillow, half to add to the coquettish look. "Then again, aren't you supposed to be a kiwi?" she asked teasingly. "Huh, Deathbutt?"

A certain drawing may or may not have been torn out from a certain journal and placed in her room.

"If only I could," Gale said with a sigh, and then, after a slight pause, "Fly, that is. I have a lot of happy thoughts, most of them with you - is that too cheesy?" he added, smiling a little. "If I could, I would have the both of us greet you by taking you flying in the air; wouldn't that be a sight! We could go to Neverneverland - second star to the right, and straight on 'til morning!"

He was laughing now, Stormy's sly expression bringing him great amusement. "I forgot," Gale deadpanned, curling his fingers against the side of her cheek where his hand was squashed against it. "That beautiful masterpiece, how could I have ever neglected to remember my true self in life."

"Maybe just a little on the cheesy side," she replied with a smile. "But you know me, I love that stuff. Bring it on~" Hadn't he said, after all, that she made him feel like he was flying before? It was uber cheesy and thus perfect.

Gigglig at the deadpan response, Stormy nuzzled her new finger pillow happily. "So we're crossing over here. Would you take me to Neverneverland as Deathbutt the Ravenclaw prefect kiwi, or would we fly over Hogwarts on the way over as you, Peter Pan, lead the way? I'm tickled by the idea of a flightless bird doing this, y'know~" she said, lazily reaching out to poke Gale's cheek. "Is it a third year and up student trip? Or is Hook up to his nasty tricks again and we have to stop him? Most importantly, am I me or Wendy or someone else entirely?"

"I love that you love that stuff," said Gale with a laugh. "And I love that you let me be as cheesy as I want and that you appreciate my cheesiness, because there will probably never be an end to it. I am, after all, a sentimental sort of bloke."

He smiled at her, and pressed at the side of her face, gentle and affectionate. "Let's go to Hogwarts, I'd love to learn magic." Her hand tickled his cheek, Gale turning his head to quickly n** at her finger. "I am Peter Pan as a kiwi, or maybe I'm a Ravenclaw Peter Pan, though I think Peter Pan might actually be more suited towards Slytherin, come to think of it..."

Gale reached out with his free hand, lacing his fingers through Stormy's outstretched ones. He wrinkled his nose a bit. "Hook can be Caelius, that's fitting for him, isn't it? And you can be Wendy, because she was always a dreamer and Tiger Lily was rather awful. Tink was snippy, which you are not, so you can be Wendy."

A pause, and then he added slyly, "Because you're darling."

Her face was beginning to hurt from how much she was smiling. "And I love," you, "that you love that I love it~" she said airily, stuck on the word because it was the closest she had come to saying it in months, and maybe saying it enough would make her true meaning plain. Or maybe her giggly state was getting to her. Probably the latter, as Stormy's would-be scandalized face at his n** easily broke into a grin; if Gale hadn't entwined heir fingers, she would have poked him mercilessly just to egg him on.

"Kiwi Pan, did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire?" she asked him quite seriously, about to launch into a bubbly little crossover rant—he would probably be in Slytherin, she agreed—but stopped when Gale landed his magical pun. Stormy stared at him for a moment.

Stared some more.

And then laughter broke her silence, delighted, loud laughter that made her shake. What words she managed were scattered amongst them. "You—oh God—no, I can't—" Stormy, who had risen during her fit, promptly collapsed back down and caught her breath. "No, nope, I'm done, Gale made a good pun, great one really, can't beat it, so proud, goodnight everyone."

Stormy began to roll off of him and threatened to slide onto the ground.

His breath caught on the word love because for a moment Gale had thought that she might actually say it - but then it became something else, and she was looking at him in a very simple sort of way, which made his heart speed up, even with the slight shift in what she had said. Gale smiled at her, his grin matching her own, and then he was laughing, because Kiwi Pan was such a ridiculous name.

But really Gale was just very proud of his "terrible" pun, and was giving Stormy a very cheeky sort of grin as she stared at him.

Her laughter rolled over him, washed over his heart in waves, and it made him happy to hear it as her shoulders shook with giggles and mirth. Stormy had rolled a little, slipping sideways, and now she was about to fall off of both Gale and the couch, and Gale shifted and wrapped his arms around her in an attempt at keeping her from falling -

- except he banged his elbow into the side of the couch, which sent ripples of tingles through his forearm, and he gave a squawk and a gasp as he tumbled off the couch himself, doing everything he could to keep from squashing Stormy beneath him as he fell.

"Ow - yes - thank you, I thought it was a good pun myself - " he wheezed out, breathless with laughter.

Her laughter doubled as they fell off the couch unceremoniously, escalating in to silent shakes and then wheezy gasps, until Stormy's face was as flushed as Gale at his most embarrassed. The small burst of pain from landing on her back was as nothing in comparison to the silly amount of joy she took from this, from the magical pun to Gale's squawk—though it did contribute to her dizziness. She took a few moments to catch her breath, her head tilted back and throbbing gently.

"That wasn't quite falling with style," Stormy said in a breathy voice, grinning, "but I'll take it. Nice catch, Galestorm. Your pun was better, though."

And then, in spite of needing to catch her breath, she pulled him down into a kiss that quickly grew more heated, arms wrapping around whatever she could to keep him there—the clearly logical, deserving reward for being called Darling.

(And the easiest way to keep their heads down in the water, to avoid coming back for air and remembering what waited on the shore.)

Thankfully he hadn't crushed Stormy, Gale propping himself up on his elbows above her. Her face was red as she laughed, shoulders shaking with suppressed giggles, and while she may have hit her head, she wasn't acting as though it hurt, at least, which was reassuring. Gale tried to get some of the air back into his lungs as he looked down at her, a grin on his face.

"Thank you, I do try - " he started to say, but whatever else had been in his mind promptly flew away the moment she pulled him down towards her, Gale exhaling a sigh of contentment against her lips. He smiled happily into the kiss, sliding his own arms around her and shifting a little so that his full weight wasn't squashing her, one hand against her back, between her shoulder blades. The other was on her waist, curling gently against her side.

"I like to think," he said breathlessly, as he drew back just enough to talk, though not far enough to break their connection, "that one day I'll be able to stun the world with my amazing ability at forming puns and it will be a beautiful, beautiful thing - "

Then he promptly stopped talking in favor of much more pleasurable things, like sinking into yet another kiss and trying to forget entirely what was happening in the morning.

Somewhere in the midst of the second kiss, one of her legs had wound about him as her arms did, no ifs, ands, or buts from prior doubts. The more she clung to him and the more he held her, maybe the less likely she'd have to leave at all.

"You would've learned from a master," Stormy murmured some time later, a rare and proud look on her face. "One who could pun-ish you if you didn't do it right." Her game was weak, but her arms were strong, both around his neck and with one lightly combing his hair with her fingers (always fascinated by the gradient, the length, the softness, the smell of tea and paper and sometimes sweat). "But you're already a beautiful, beautiful thing, you know. No need to worry about that."

Stormy paused, then bumped noses. "D'you want to...keep going? Or do you want dinner?"

Gale was perfectly okay with the way things were going, especially the whole snuggling, cuddling and hugging thing. He was flushed and breathless by the time Stormy spoke again, and a smile tugged at his lips, which quirked upwards at the ends. He moved the hand currently on her waist to touch the side of her face, fingers stroking gently down her cheek.

"Was that a threat?" he asked, gently teasing, as her hand slid through his hair. He curled his fingers beneath her ear, leaning to press a soft kiss to Stormy's forehead, lingering before he kissed her cheek and then the corner of her eye, still smiling. "I'm okay with you pun-ishing me, then."

Laughing a little, Gale nuzzled his nose against hers, almost catlike, and breathed out a small sigh as he contemplated this very important question.

"Just a few more minutes," he said decisively, and slid his hand back around her waist, pressing his lips gently to hers as he drew her back against him, wanting to share in Stormy's warmth for just a little longer, for just as long as it took for him to not remember the pain of having to let her go in the morning.

"It's not punishment if you're looking forward to it, silly. Maybe you'll change your tune if your house gets glitterbombed..." It might have been ominous if she hadn't been smiling; or maybe that just made it moreso.

She struggled with the impulse to explain, however, that "keep going" wasn't meant to mean stay like this—though there was absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. It had been a feeble attempt, perhaps too vague also, to ask if he wanted a little more before she left, one or two hesitant steps forward before she got dragged back into the desert, one or two questions she needed to answer to settle it.

But then, what was her rush? She was going to come back. She had to. Pushing things wasn't a good idea today.

So Stormy contented herself with the cuddling and kissing, and she only paused long enough to suggest they at least sit up before claiming his lap and clinging to him once more. The longer they went on, the needier she became, though, until it wasn't just out of affection that she was tethering herself to him. On the descent, her lips strayed over his neck before she tucked her nose into Gale's shoulder, and one of her hands curled into the back of his shirt.

"I don't want to go back."

"You wouldn't dare," said Gale, with a stern look in Stormy's direction that failed completely because, like her, he was smiling too much to make it entirely serious. He stroked the side of her face again, gentle and affectionate, his expression shifting a little.

Maybe he'd misunderstood Stormy's intentions with the keep going; or maybe some part of him had felt like continuing on (as much as he wanted to) would have meant that it was some sort of final goodbye for she left, and it was terrifying to think in that sort of mindset. He kept shoving the unnecessary thoughts from his head, focusing on the positives, the determined fact that she was coming back, but somehow they kept floating back into his mind.

Gale obliged with the suggestion of sitting up, his back against the couch, his arms wrapped around Stormy's waist. It wasn't until, quite some time later, that he became aware that it had grown a little darker outside. Stormy's lips pressed gently against his throat, still faintly bruised from his encounter with Jack, and Gale let out a soft breath of air, tingles running up and down his spine. He slipped his hands just beneath the hemline of her shirt to absently brush his thumbs over her waist in gentle, reassuring movements.

"I don't want you to go back," he whispered softly. "I don't want you to leave."

Then don't let me, she wanted to say, as if it were so simple. It would have been a useless but appreciated gesture. Sighing quietly into his shirt, Stormy closed her eyes and leaned her head against his for a while, soothed (vaguely excited, vaguely anxious at the back of her mind in spite of herself) by his touch. "Maybe it won't be long," she said, lightly scratching his back in return. "The external missions there usually go for three days." Maybe she was making a big deal out of nothing and would be coming back all too soon, sheepish and whole and with a story or two to share. Maybe those steps forward with Gale and that family gathering were closer than she could hope.

(She didn't like to these days, hers was the kind that could either weather the storm or crumble in a breeze and she rarely had control over which it was.)

But a niggling curiosity bothered her peace. Stormy had avoided it since seeing them while he had been on his shirtless high, but now she was drawn to ask—probably because she didn't want to keep thinking about the inevitable again, and because she always wanted to know everything even if it wasn't her business. So she sat up.

She didn't outright ask Gale, but her gaze deliberately fell from his eyes to his neck, and gently, gently, she began sizing up the mark with a few fingers.

His hands were gentle, not possessive or demanding, as they moved along her waist, still just barely touching the skin there, his fingers meant to be reassuring as they smoothed over the small of her back now. Stormy was curled against him and he felt a curious mixture of warmth, relaxation, and an undercurrent of irrepressible anxiety for what lay ahead of them.

"Let's hope for three days, then," said Gale softly, and pressed a kiss to Stormy's brow, sighing a little.

Maybe he could hope for even less than that, but hope was a dangerous thing on Deus Ex Machina, as he had already learned too well.

Stormy sat up, pushing far enough away from him that he could see her face - and, more importantly, her eyes, which had drifted from his own meaningfully down to his neck, and the faint purple and brown bruises that spread from one side of his neck to the other. When they'd first appeared, it had been clear that they were shaped like fingers, grasping, squeezing fingers; but a few days time had meant that they'd faded a little to something less distinctive, but no less obvious.

Her fingers touched the side of his neck and he winced slightly; an involuntary reaction. Gale reached up a hand and covered Stormy's with his own, drawing them gently away from his throat.

"It's..." He couldn't say no big deal, because remember what had happened was still nauseating and horrifying, but what could he tell her that would not make everything screwed up? Sorry I had a bout of inexplicable rage and tried to kill your ex-boyfriend?

What would she think of him if he told her? But he had never lied to her, had never kept the truth from Stormy because he hadn't ever wanted to fall into those traps other couples did, keeping secrets and hiding things until someone found out and it exploded everywhere, shattering relationships. Stormy was too precious to him.

But telling her the truth was a dangerous road as well; she knew how he felt about Jack, and yet...and yet, he'd never before stooped as low as he had. Gale had been fortunate enough that Jordan had found him before someone else had - or before Jack had come back. And that was another problem - if he didn't tell her, there was a chance Jack would, twisting the truth until it was convoluted enough to make himself out to be the victim.

(Which he had been; Gale felt slightly sick to his stomach again.)

So what on earth was he supposed to say?

Gale sighed, and drew Stormy's hand up to his lips, pressing a kiss to her fingers. When he spoke, he couldn't look at her, still holding her hand against his mouth tightly as though trying to use it as an anchor for his sanity; and a part of him was afraid that if he let go, she would fall away from him.

"They're reminders," he said quietly, meaning the bruises. "of a stupid, stupid mistake."

He drew a sharp, slightly shaking breath, and then said, still not looking at her, "I got into a fight with Jack."

Stormy couldn't say she was surprised at the explanation. Who else would Gale fight with that violently? But unlike the last time he had told her they fought—where she had felt a spike of fury and an impulsive need to hurt Jack twice as much—she only felt a thin but white hot line of guilt invade her chest, as if she herself had wrapped her fingers about him so tightly.

(But it always seemed to be that other people left their mark on him.)

It was clear to her that Gale didn't admit this lightly, though, and she didn't want to so much as move her fingers as he held them hostage, only managing a few strokes of her thumb at most. Alongside that growing shame inside was an uncomfortable lump of anxiety from the upcoming mission now mixed in with the concerns about their fight and its repercussions, and Stormy almost wanted to physically rub it away like some bad knot of tensed muscle.

"I'm so sorry...Did it happen on the day all that glass broke?" she asked quietly, pulling her gaze back up to look at him even though he couldn't do the same.
