They only call it pop because in the Metal scene...this is what they would consider to be POP music..bc they are so popular. It just means that most of these people say that they are sell outs and are in it for the glory and recognition...which most bands are...secretly. Why else would they be in this business? If they did it for fun...why would they want to get a record deal? Dimmu just happened to be one of the best and became popular and it pissed off all the people who don't like Dimmu (or all the people who say they hate bands bc they are popular..even though being popular doesn't change the way a band sounds). That is my opinion anyway.

okay. dimmu borgir are good musicians. so they dont suck.
second - they aren't pop because pop is what is popular in the mainstream culture, and the last time i checked, it was nickelback and britney spears being played on the radio, not dimmu borgir. they did develop their own sound which is different than the typical norwegian sound, but that doesnt make them pop.
3rd - i consider anything that is a) metal and b) has a satanic lyrical focus as black metal. dimmu falls under this, as do older, less heavy bands such as mercyful fate.
but seriously...whats with labeling all these genres anyway? cant it all be just metal? who cares if theyre black or death or symphonic or any of the other genres, as long as the music is something you can enjoy? and just because you dont enjoy it doesnt mean it sucks.

yes there are genres and subgenres. but at times people seem to think that just because something falls outside of their favorite genre that it must suck, which isnt necessarily true. all im saying is that a) dimmu doesnt sound like britney so they arent "pop", and b) that, while genres have their uses, they aren't and shouldnt be the only factor in determining if a band is good. id like to think that musicians are evaluated, at least in part, on their musical skill.

I know that. But with 'pop' we meant (as I said before) 'stupidly popular' not pop as in the music genre (crappy)

well if a band becomes popular because they are good musicians, what difference does it make?

MegaTherion777 well if a band becomes popular because they are good musicians, what difference does it make? Not the case for Dimmu Borgir.

they've totally marketed the image of other more extreme black metal artists and they lack creativity.

look, im not saying dimmu is great, all im saying is that they have more talent that britney spears, and so deserve more respect.
and they can certainly play better than the pussies in trivium.
now, read this whole thing before you respond - i dont want to contend with someone who only read half of it and misrepresents my argument.
and how did they sell out? i mean, as i said, selling out implies a change in sound to what is popular in mainstream culture. their sound did not undergo a huge change, and it most definitely doesnt sound like nickelback or hawthorne ******** heights. just cuz they sell merchandise doesnt mean they sold out - in fact, the bands usually get very little revenue from album sales, and if they want to make a living playing music they have to sell merchandise and tour extensively. trust me, good black metal bands like satyricon are not making a living on just album sales
im not saying that they are great. im not even saying theyre good black metal. there are a lot of BM bands that are better than dimmu - gorgoroth and satyricon both come to mind. but there are also bands that are worse than dimmu, bands that are actual sellouts - cradle of filth comes to mind.
you guys are portraying dimmu as if they are the scum of the earth, and all i'm saying is that they aren't. you have the right to not like them, but dont go around saying they have no talent when they have infinitely more talent than you hear on the radio these days.
