Laughing at his own offerings from Mike, she did feel bad for the man. Katrina didn't smoke for various health reasons, reasons she took seriously as a nurse; but she didn't think a lecture was really the way to go on a date. Maybe someday she could get him to kick the habit, but for now she understood how a cheap cigarette wouldn't be much of a payment for his lunch. She supposed it was like the yogurt Mike would bring her, too soupy and full of artificial flavors. Feeling more relaxed as they walked, she was able to avoid any breaches in her ability, although Nicolo's memory was vivid enough to give her the gist in how he was feeling. Clearly amused, she continued to lead the way. His demeanor the entire night had been positive, and so she was feeling better about this date as it went on.

Once they had walked the block, Katrina paused just across from the Linguini's, letting a car pass before crossing the street with Nicolo. Entering the restaurant with him, they were greeted and seated by a host without needing to wait overly long. "Have you been here?" she asked lightly as she picked up her menu.

{ooc: I love the idea of her trying to subtly make him stop smoking xD }

Relieved to receive no comment on his smoking from the nurse, he let out another small laugh;his bad habit was sure to come up eventually, but it was a bit of a heavy topic for a first date. Still, he was glad not to have to discuss the matter now. The date was going rather well, in his opinion, and he was pleased that they had decided to set this whole thing up. There had been plenty of catastrophic first dates in his past, and he was glad that, at least so far, this wouldn't be counted among them. The restaurant was nicer on the inside than he had expected, and the man was pleased with his choice.

Easing into his side of the booth, he picked up his menu and began to look it over. "I haven't." he admitted, eyes scanning the list of food items. "One of my coworkers recommended it." he admitted, glancing over the menu to steal a glance at her. From the dimmed lighting and white tablecloths, he was guessing that one of the restaurant's main draw was as a date spot. "Have you?" he asked, a little curious on the matter. Had she been on a date here before? Not that it was a big deal, of course.

Nodding as it was explained that this restaurant had been recommended, she continued to scan the menu, although she already knew most of their options. After settling on a serving of lasagna, she closed he menu and set it down in front her. "Several times, but I rarely get to enjoy it here." she admitted in response to his question, a small smile on her face as she elaborated, "When I'm hosting a large group of people and I haven't got a lot of time, I order from this place." Between her job and spot in the Council, there were plenty of get-togethers that had to be planned. It seemed to Katrina that even when she wasn't the designated hostess, she always wound up in charge of the food, a reoccurrence that she wasn't sure how had come to be. Although she could cook as well as anyone, she rarely had the time to prepare meals for so many people at one time, so ordering from this place seemed like the best solution. "It's been almost four years now, and I haven't disliked any of their dishes yet." she added, almost certain that Nicolo would enjoy whatever he chose to order.

Scanning his options carefully, he finally settled on a dish of pasta and seafood. While chicken was his usual safe option, if Katrina said that the food was always good, then he would venture into something that he was usually very picky about. Oftentimes his friends would pick on him for eating so much seafood, typical for a cat they said, but it was really all personal preference. At least, he was pretty sure it was just personal preference. "That is quite the vote of confidence." it was good to know that the restaurant did take out, as not all nicer restaurants did so. "Are there any other good places to eat around here?" he questioned, hoping for a positive answer. "I've only had the chance to stop at the cafe in town. Their coffee is pretty good." with plenty of milk, anyway. He took his coffee in almost equal parts coffee and milk, another cat-like habit he supposed, but nothing to get into now.

The arrival of their waiter was almost expertly timed, and if Katrina were to read the boy's mind she was almost certain that he would have been told to approach their table five seconds after both the menus had been put down. Of course, she refrained from doing so, and instead ordered her dish after her date had asked for his. Once their menus were collected and they were able to return to their conversation, she considered Nicolo's question. Discounting the café since he had already been there, she shook her head slowly, knowing that the town had only a few places to eat at. "There's a fast food place, and a bar, but for anything else sit down you'll need to go to Shoreport." The town's beach was technically in the city limit, but the amount of nothingness between the two areas was just great enough to make it feel separated. "There's much more of selection there because it's our tourist spot." Janhall needed to cater to tourists somehow, so having plenty of food choices was a must. "You'd love the seafood place. They only serve what they catch locally." Her tone was light as she mentioned it, although she was well aware of his race and his order hadn't escaped her notice.

Handing over his menu after his order was placed, the man was impressed with the excellent timing of the waiter, and made a note to leave a decent tip. Taking a quick look around the restaurant, he was especially impressed considering the small crowd that had gathered there that night, not especially surprising considering the time of night. His gaze shifted back to his date as she spoke, giving a small nod to accept her answer. He had noticed the sense of divide between the two areas, chalking it up to the separation of the tourists from the townies; many of the cities he had lived in had been set up that way as well, so he wasn't particularly surprised. He explanation confirmed his suspicions, and he gave another nod to confirm he was still listening. He made a face at her reference to seafood, seeing that he had been caught. "Only if they'll serve milk in a saucer." he remarked, taking a sip of his water glass after the waiter wordlessly dropped them off. Nicolo was used to jokes about being a cat, and took them mostly in stride; Katrina hadn't meant the statement with any venom, so he joked back about the matter. As long as she didn't start petting him like a lap cat, it wasn't a big deal.

Smiling at his retort, she shook her head lightly as she told him, "I can think of stranger requests than that. The owner will do anything for business." Her closest friend was a vegetarian, and had once asked if they had any meatless dishes; the owner had been confused, but she was one to make as much money as possible, so a new dish had been invented that day. "Can I ask-" she started after a moment, not wanting to come across as overly inquisitive, but feeling that a new subject would be beneficial. Taking a sip from her own water glass, she asked, "What brought you to Janhall?" Throughout their date, she was only aware that he had wasn't exactly new to the town and that he had a good job, but she was curious why someone who was in such a field would want to live in a small town. Granted, they were the first to remove the Veil, which had brought a new wave of denizens over the past year, but everyone's reasons were different.

Considering the wide array of beings that ran about the town, he couldn't say that he was surprised to hear that stranger requests had been made. Briefly, he wondered what strange sort of things had been requested in the past, but that was a conversation for a different time. His focus shifted back to Katrina, raising a brow as she started and then cut short to take a drink. Hoping it wasn't a dreaded 'can I ask you a question?', which he would always reply to with 'that is a question', he was quietly relieved when she simply asked the question outright. It was a decent question, and he took a drink as he considered. "It seemed like a good middle ground." he admitted, taking a moment to consider further before he continued. "I have a rather large family who like to throw their weight around, so it was a bit of a hassle always being connected back to them. I decided to try the human world for a bit, but that was not exactly what I was hoping for either. A friend passed along word of this little place, and I figured I would try here. With all the ruckus, I assumed they could use the legal assistance." which had turned out to be true, for the most part. "What about you? Any special draw?" he was aware that she had been here much longer, even before the Veil had been taken down.

Listening as Nicolo explained his reasoning, she nodded to show that she understood. His statement of wanting to feel like his own person, apart from his family was something she respected. The fact that he had lived in the human world made sense, since she had figured that the first step to trying something new would mean a drastically different move. She wondered what hadn't worked out for him there, but she could guess that it had been the lack of knowledge among humans of their world. And considering their many new laws and lawbreakers, Nicolo was correct in his assumption of the town needing more legal help. "Well I'm glad your friend mentioned the town. For awhile, I was worried that people would start moving away, rather than in." Her smile faltered for a moment as she recalled the first few months of the Veil's removal. It had been difficult, since the action had been met with immediate resistance. But eventually, the Council had managed to secure the magic holding the Veil at bay, and she had taken a big step forward during that time. Regaining her smile within a second, their waiter returned with the food, instantly giving her another reason to set aside the past's worries and focus on answering Nicolo's question.

"I like the atmosphere." she told him once their waiter had disappeared again. "My family hadn't expected magic to be real, but my brother proved otherwise when he was a toddler." She gave a small laugh, remembering the stories they would tell her of his antics. "So naturally, when I came along, they were a little more prepared. I was educated in magic schools, but my home was in the human world. When I graduated, I traveled until I found this place." she motioned idly around her, reffering to the town as she added, "When I found out about their plans for uniting the two worlds, I knew I could help." Picking up her fork with a smile, she took a bite of her lasagna, fonding that it was just as good as all the other the times she had gotten it.

Nicolo had decided to leave out a few of the other factors for leaving behind bot his family and his life in the human world; he had a bad habit of getting himself into trouble, and it had been due to his extremely poor behavior as a child and teen that he had become so familiar with the law in the first place. Smiling faintly at her comment about people moving away, he gave a small shake of his head."Yes, he ended up here as well. The human world is, ah.... not as accepting as they'd like to think." his expression was almost pained for a moment before vanishing. It was not a pleasant story, and certainly not something to discuss at the moment, especially when it wasn't really his story to tell. Still, he had to agree on the matters of the human world; it had been an odd experience, not all together pleasant, and he had no plans to return any time soon.

The waiter dropped of their food, and he poked at it with his fork as he listened. He smiled again at her story of her family, definitely amused at the tale. He had many brothers back home, and he wondered what it would have been like if his parents hadn't been prepared; considering the number of siblings he had, then it would have been quite a travesty, especially considering the oldest siblings were twins. Being unprepared for two magical kids, especially ones that were turning back and forth between human and cat before they could read, would have been quite the adventure. "That sounds like fun. My family is very big, and we lived on a large compound. I didn't go away for school until I went to college." he had been relieved to get away, and he hadn't been back since.

Allowing a small nod in response to his statement about the human world, she wondered what sort of story was behind those words. It would have been easy enough to pry, but she would never betray the privacy of another being, especially one she was currently on a date with. "I hope he feels welcomed here." she said instead, truly wanting everyone to live in peace and to feel accepted in this little town. Taking another bite of her lasagna, she rose a brow at his admission to living on a compund until he'd left for college. Swallowing the bite, she asked him, "Did you enjoy college?" From the way he had spoken about leaving for school, she had a feeling Nicolo had enjoyed it, but there was no harm in affirming it. Her own experience had been pleasant, although her roommate had been a bother for a few semesters, until Katrina could afford to live on her own. "Liking the food?" she asked after another moment, pointing to his plate with her fork. She was hopeful that he approved of their food, since she had given it such high praise just a few minutes prior.

Continuing to dig his way through the mass of noodles and bits of fish, he gave a nod at her statement. His roommate had only been there about a week, but so far things had been going well for the both of them. His mouth was full of past at her first question, which gave him a moment to think back to his college days. They had been interesting, to say the least. He had a habit of sleeping as a cat, which had been something he'd had to break at college. "It was fun. My roommate and I kept getting accused of having a cat, and nearly got kicked out of the dorms." he looked amused at the memory, remembering the time fondly. He hadn't moved off campus until he had gone to law school, at which point it didn't really matter if he had this disappearing cat or not. Still, college had been a fairly enjoyable experience, if only because there were no little siblings or little cousins running around and getting into his things. His eyes glanced down at the food as she mentioned it, giving a small smile. "It's very good." he answered, honestly enjoying it. The fish was cooked perfectly, and the white sauce they used was an excellent combination of flavour. "How's yours?" he asked, though he had the strong feeling that she had had it before.

Laughing at the idea of Nicolo confusing people by shifting between his two forms, she wondered how exactly he had managed to get away with it all. She knew that it was common practice to prohibit pets in school dorms, so there must have been several close calls that would make for an interesting story. "Did your roommate know the truth?" she asked before taking another sip from her water. She had assumed not, since he'd gone to college with humans, but wasn't completely sure how he would manage to keep such a large secret for that amount of time. Her own abilities had always become obvious when she was younger, but perhaps Nicolo was better at stealth and such.

Pleased that he was enjoying his meal, she turned her attention back to own dish when he returned her question. Answering honestly, she told him, "Perfect, and certainly better than I could ever make it." Cooking was only an average skill of her's, but the few dishes she made really well were all pasta related, simply because her vegetarian friend had been the one to teach her, and he stressed the value in a good Italian dish. Still, this restaurant had chefs far more talented than herself.

Shaking his head at her question, he looked almost amused. Telling your human roommate that you were a creature from old Celtic mythology was a very bad idea, especially when he was sure he had had at least one relative keeping an eye on him. "I told him it was a stray. A very shy stray." it was a shaky story, but he had convinced his roommate that the less he knew, the less likely that he would get in trouble. That, and his roommate hadn't been the brightest crayon in the box. A smile flashed across his features at the memory, and he poked at the slowly decreasing volume of pasta in his bowl.

He laughed lightly at her comment on cooking, giving a nod of acknowledgement. "I know what you mean. I'm a horrible cook." he admitted, mind still on his college days. His school's meal plan had prevented him from starving during the school year, and his breaks were spent eating take out, instant noodles, and cereal. It definitely hadn't been a good diet, but he had made do. Nicolo had attempted to learn how to cook, he'd even taken cooking lessons once over one summer break, but each attempt had ended tragically and in more than one small fire breaking out.

Appearing amused at the excuse he had given his roommate, Katrina almost felt bad for the other man. A whole other world was just beneath his nose, and he hadn't known it. Still, the entire idea was funny, and she told him, "Your biggest lie was telling him the cat was shy." Nicolo didn't seem shy to her, although he did come across as the sneaky sort. Setting her glass back down, she smiled at his statement of cooking, nodding her head in understanding. "I'm no master at it, but I have a friend that's terrific. He's a vegetarian, but I promise that you won't miss the meat when eating one of his master pieces." She could recall several dishes that she thought would be less than satisfying but had actually been terrific under his ability. She had even gone so far as to grant him a wish, but that information she kept to herself. A genie's first rule was to avoid discussing such things.
