"Watch out for herself", he said. The guilt piling commenced.

She immediately regretted bringing the Sahara back up, even though it was an innate need of hers to check up on people after things happened, large or small. It would always be a cycle of either being in the state of wanting to know out of concern and being driven mad not knowing, or the state of being guilty about prying afterwards when asking evokes something negative or only causing more questions to start the dilemma over again: the catch-22 of the curious.

What she had come to learn about Gale was that he was not a flashy person nor one who used grand gestures to convey his meaning; the biggest of these really had been the date to London, and even that had been a calm affair. Rather, he seemed to sway towards one of two methods: concentrated and singular, like a shot from his rifle or an intense look of adoration, or in a series of minute motions that betrayed him like a tell, like a quirk of the mouth while trying to be serious. His hands in particular, she had noticed, conveyed the latter more; Stormy remembered how his hands had trembled in the infirmary as they tip-toed around the abyss after Jake's mission, how he fiddled with Jinhai's ring in idleness or even subconsciously, and how he enjoyed focusing kisses to her hands. Maybe she wouldn't have noticed this too much if she wasn't so often aware of her own, how they curled and kept close to her person out of an introverted need to maintain her space, but which always had the imagination of holding something else while her eyes wandered: fabric, metal, stone, skin. And maybe that was part of the driving force that had drawn them in, Stormy thought with a sudden realization: that it was less about two people who had been unlucky in love before and were trying to start again, and more about two people who were willing to reach out with their hands and feel for themselves exactly what the other was made of.

It was by reflecting on these moments that she could intuit, even with just a slight tremble of Gale's hands, how much he was trying to keep it together at the mere mention of that awful desert, even as he appeared calm otherwise.

In comparison, the bitter laugh cut through the moment like a gunshot in her ears (all loud, bad noises seemed to be compared to those, she noted), and she was startled out of her reverie. Stormy didn't like the sound. It reminded her of sour words demeaning his worth, of dry humor turned inward until it became a critical commentary, and most of all of a certain far-too-tall boy who used to laugh at his problems until they became monsters that roared back. The words weren't aimed at her, but she still felt the jagged cuts as they passed by; after all, Gale had experienced far worse things in the Sahara before she had arrived, and she couldn't help but feel partially responsible for adding to those woes.

It felt so childish now to be antsy about him being shirtless in comparison, to think of how easily spooked she was by bugs and sand while he had literally lost people.

Holding hands in this case wasn't enough. So Stormy slid hers from his and wrapped her arms properly around him, pulling Gale forward until she could rest her head atop his shoulder and against his neck. For a while she could only figure how out to breathe and hold him close, but not what to say. Her expression kept flipping between sympathetic and pained as she fought with herself on how to approach comforting him.

"I'm sorry I brought it up," she murmured at length, squeezing him closer. "But if you ever want to talk about it, I'm right here, okay? I don't want you turning into a desert on the inside because've it, withering and desolate . . ." Stormy didn't want to pressure him either way, but she knew what bottling looked like; she was a fan of it herself. It never led to good decisions in her experience.

". . . Don't make a summer home, though. Make a winter home," she suggested. "Cold outside for good hot cocoa inside. You'll tell me if you're building, right? I want to help make something solid with my own two hands." It was clear she knew it was just a joke, and yet somehow she still sounded earnest in her proposal, as if she had been giving this thought. "Lots of tea and books, too, of course. And tons of barrier daggers everywhere tied in a ring around the place above and below the ground so it won't get hit."

He wished, not for the first time, that he was better at things.

Better at reading the minutiae of facial expressions of people, for one, so that he would be able to read and understand the social cues necessary for proper communication. Better at communicating period, since he had always had this thing about keeping every thought to himself, keeping every problem, every bad feeling, everything negative buried within his mind. A terrible habit, but also not one easily broken. He wished he were better at keeping his annoyance and his temper in check, at least in himself, since even if he didn't show it, he felt it, and that feeling would stay bottled up inside, eating him away from the inside out.

Most of all he wished he were stronger. He'd been made a Hunter at such a young age, and yet he still could hardly even talk about something like the Sahara without growing nauseated and upset. There were those who had said that one day he would "get over it," but none of them had been there when Ben had died, none of them had seen the resolute and resigned look in his eyes just before he'd let go. And it had been that very first cataclysmic event that had set in motion everything else, that one disastrous, terrible thing that had caused a domino effect.

Maybe one day he would be free of the nightmare that plagued him, but today was not that day.

Gale felt Stormy's hands pull away from his, and he made a soft noise in protest at the dissipating warmth. But then her arms wound their way around him, gentle and careful, her face against his shoulder, and he felt, rather than saw, her comfort. Beneath her touch, some of the tension eased away, and Gale tilted his own head sideways, resting it atop Stormy's.

"It's fine," he said softly, and kissed the top of her head, his lips lingering in her hair momentarily before he pulled away. "Really. I'll...be able to get over it soon, hopefully."

He felt bad for saying it, bad for shutting her out on this particular issue, but until he was able to deal with it himself, he could not possibly expect Stormy to handle it for him.

Gale's voice was gentle. "I'll remember that for the future," he replied, and then a smile tugged at his lips at her proposal which, while outlandish and joking, still sounded somehow pleasant. He lifted a hand, gently brushing away some of her hair from her forehead, and then slid his arms around her waist, pulling Stormy over into his lap.

"It's getting cold outside," he said against her hair. "We could build a snow dog again, just like when we first met. Have some hot cocoa, find some candycanes. We can take the portals or use my pendant and we can go and have ourselves a proper date in a proper city - one that's bug free," he added, with a little laugh, his arms wrapped snugly around her because her warmth and her presence was keeping him sane, keeping him from wallowing in misery and anxiety.

She understood all too well the need to tackle something on one's own, even though she was on some level sad she couldn't wrest one more bonding moment from him, one extra dive into his psyche; although considering the emotional rollercoaster they'd gone through already, maybe it was better not to ask him to pile more onto it. Just as long as he knew she would be there to listen if he needed, that was enough.

Shifting with the movement, she accommodated herself on Gale's lap and hummed both in thought and at his doting. "Cold yeah, thank God," she sighed with relief, and then smiled against his shoulder at his suggestions. He received another affectionate squeeze. "All of that sounds so wonderful . . . Let's go someplace that has peppermint bark, huh? It's delicious! And then a proper date in a proper city with proper food . . . Hot cocoa and warm soup, blankets to cuddle in . . ." She sighed again, this time dreamily. "I never used that bonus day from the cruise either . . . We could go out for more than a day."

Letting that idea linger for a moment, Stormy turned her head so she kiss his shoulder before resting once more, trying to hide the light blush (as if somehow kissing a bare shoulder was more daring than anything else she'd done previous). "D'you think it'll snow, though? Last time it only did because Mr. Allan worked his magic. Maybe it needs some convincing, just in case." She cleared her throat and, like a good Disney movie, broke into sudden (if soft) song, swaying a little while still keeping a secure hold on Gale.

"Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow~!"
"

Because that would clearly guarantee the weather conditions.

He liked it when she was wrapped in his arms because he liked her warmth and he liked the way she seemed to just fit against him, curled up in his lap. Gale pressed the side of his face against hers, her face against his shoulder, and he squeezed gently, turning his head to kiss her cheek. "Peppermint bark," he repeated with a small laugh. "I haven't had that in years."

The mention of her bonus day only served to make him feel more happy. "Just think," said Gale, sounding more and more enthused by the idea. "We could take several days off, have them just to ourselves. We could go to anywhere in the world we wanted. We could rent a gondola in Venice and ride through the canals, or go see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. We could go walk along the Grand Canyon, or go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the Louvre to see the Mona Lisa."

He felt tingles along his shoulder at her kiss, Gale's own cheeks flushing slightly, but he kept moving anyway, trying to act casual about the whole thing. "Maybe we can convince him again," he said. "Allan's pretty easy to work over, we'd just need something we can bargain with. We'll tell him having snow builds friendships or something."

Stormy singing made him lapse into silence, however, Gale just sitting there with his arms around her and her soft voice echoing in his ears. It was such a pleasant sound, warm and familiar, and Gale tilted forward, pressing his face into Stormy's shoulder.

"You have the loveliest voice," he mumbled, voice slightly muffled. "It's part of the reason I fell in love with you in the first place, I think. Because you just seem to work magic with it, somehow."

As the last note faded away, she felt the urge to bury her face self-consciously; even around Gale, sometimes singing was hard, especially nowadays when there wasn't much cause to. Music was and forever would be the easiest method of communication for her, next to writing, and without her beloved instrument around she felt silenced or at least partially muted. Not that her rants didn't reveal a part of her, but they were jumbled and confusing and didn't always make sense, and even though he found them charming, it was still a messy way of communicating in her eyes.

"Caroling brings people together and forms close bonding," she suggested with a small chuckle. "And snow sculpting promotes teamwork and trust. Perfect~"

One of her hands began to idly stroke along his spine as he listed of vacation spots. She hummed in thought. "Three days maximum for me if using the bonus day. But I wouldn't be able to pick where with so many places to visit," she admitted sheepishly. "I would've loved to travel more if my family could've afforded it...Maybe we should just spin a globe and point a finger~ Or I'll let you pick again."

And then she paused and blushed at the compliment. Stormy buried her face into his neck, thoroughly pleased but for whatever reason unable to convey it beyond schoolgirl shyness. "Chaos and magic," she offered quietly after a moment. "Like making new worlds, you said." And she got another thrill just by remembering it, a bashful smile brushing against his skin. It was nice to think she had any power at all, for one reason or another. "Does that make me the siren and you the poor sailor about to drown? Because I'll just stop talking if it keeps you alive, you know~

"But you should also know before I go silent, that you have a very pleasant voice, too, Gale. And a much better accent to boot! You could be reading ingredients off a cake mix box and I'd be enchanted . . ."

Her regular speaking voice was one thing, but her singing voice truly was magical. Gale felt Stormy's face redden as she buried it against him, and he held her gently, smiling into her hair. "So we can do both of those things. We'll find more people to carol with us," he added, with a small laugh. "I can't promise I'm a very good singer myself, but we can try."

He could not stop the tingles that shivered up and down his back at her touch, Gale resting his head against Stormy's. "We'll go anywhere," he said. "Anywhere in the world, just the two of us, for three days. We'll have a vacation without any worry, without having to think about monsters or about bugs or about the blasted Sahara. We'll do nothing but beautiful things and see beautiful places and listen to beautiful music."

Gale felt her smile against him, almost felt the shyness, and it was endearing and lovely and warm all at once. He shifted back and then leaned entirely back on the bed, pulling Stormy with him so that he could lie on his back with her curled beside him. He was perhaps being rude, making himself comfortable on her bed, but he wrapped an arm around her shoulders and hugged her, feeling warm and pleasant.

"Not like yours," he said gently. "My voice is average compared to yours. You can just spin tales of beauty and wonder without even trying."

She gave a soft laugh of her own. "That comes with practice. You can sing when you want to, though. Remember?" Stormy tilted her head up enough to reach his ear and half-whispered, half-sang as if it were a secret. "♪ Here comes the sun / Here comes the sun, and I say / It's alright~ That was the first time you sang to me, and that was magical all its own." It was the sort of memory she would fight to keep and was glad had stayed intact after the Tear. "And you told me that story about the turtle and the mountain, too, and your narrative voice was sweet. I think you should give yourself more credit!"

Setting herself back down, her smile turned serene as he described their future vacation. After everything that had happened lately, a break sounded far too sweet to pass up . . . One day was a luxury, three an awaiting paradise--the perfect escape. "And life was more beautiful that week," she murmured, recalling her retelling of their first meeting.

Before Stormy could think to break out further into song, she found herself pulled flat onto the bed. It only struck her then how most of their moments had taken place at his house, or at least in an area he was more familiar with than she was, like London. Maybe that was another reason why she was so sensitive here--on the bed.

Her bed. That part was easy to forget in her haze of thoughts and emotions.

Yet Gale looked so comfortable about it, she couldn't help but follow his lead, curling against his side and sighing; that was the fascinating part about everything, she supposed: Gale looking at home instead of flustered or awkward. It was odd to be embarrassed only now when she had practically ordered him to look asleep on her bed earlier, but that was Stormy for you: conflicting ideas were practically what composed her DNA. "Guess you don't want your shirt back, huh?" she joked as she wiggled it a little; it was partially tucked under her body at the moment. "As your girlfriend, I'm entitled to a few of your things to wear after all . . ."

< < You enjoy another's scent on you? What disgusting territorial marking. > >

And she lightly scoffed, her smile undeterred. "Also, while I have your attention . . . When's your birthday, Gale?" She tilted her head up. "I've known you for almost a year, but it hasn't come up yet . . . Or has it?" Stormy's brow furrowed slightly. "I haven't been keeping up with everyone's birthdays like I should, since we keep getting missions and titans and other bad things, but birthdays are important, you know? One year anniversaries are so important here . . ."

She had remembered him singing to her. Gale's face flushed darker, and he suddenly found himself a great deal more flustered than before, pushing his face away from Stormy's so that she wouldn't see the blush spreading across his cheeks. "That, er, that was," he said lamely, not really an excuse, but he stammered a bit more before letting her have that memory to herself.

He curled an arm around her waist, feeling warm. Grateful for the change of subject away from his singing, he gave a little laugh at her statement, tilting his head to press a kiss to the top of her head, against her hair. "You can wear it if you want. I think you'd be cute."

A slight pause.

"Well, you'd be cute in anything, really, but," his cheeks were a little red. "I like it when you wear my things," Gale admitted, a little shyly. "You've done it once before, when you stayed over, I think, but I maybe that's just a thing."

He blushed, coughed, and changed the subject again. "My birthday?" he repeated, slightly taken aback, but then he relaxed a little, gently brushing his fingers through Stormy's hair, trailing them over her cheek. "It's, ah...well, it's December 6th," he said finally. "I'll...be eighteen."

He disliked having to draw any attention to the fact that he was still young, even Stormy, but eighteen was a pivotal age, apparently; at least, according to Bix and Marcus, both of whom had mercilessly teased him about it since he had first come on the island.

Not bothering to hide how inordinately pleased she was with the offer as well as his memory, Stormy grinned widely. "Yeah? Well maybe I'll steal your coat while I'm at it and look doubly cute. Or you can keep the shirt and I'll keep the coat and everyone goes home with a prize~" It was most certainly his fault for putting on nice looking things and having a girlfriend who had already self-identified herself with a raccoon.

She hummed thoughtfully, briefly puffing her cheek against his hand as it travelled. "December 6th. Twelve-six . . . That'll be easy to remember." Although now there was the dilemma of figuring out what to get him within a few weeks, with nothing but shopping for a division leader as an excuse to get out. Crap. Maybe she ought to push it back with the Christmas gifts to give herself more time . . . "Mine's technically February 29th by a few minutes, but since that comes only four years, it's always a choice of the end of the month or beginning of the new one. I'll let you know what I feel like this year once I've decided~" she said with a wink, oblivious to his hesitation. "We'll turn eighteen together."

But oh, Gale was blushing so very hard and now she had to find a way to prolong it. Not only would it be payback for making her so red faced earlier, but she found far too much pleasure in seeing him flustered (just as she was sure Gale enjoyed it vice versa at this point). So when he turned his head away, Stormy pulled herself closer and lifted her head. "And where are you going, flaco?" she teased, trying to whisper into his ear again. "Why the red face? Was it something I said? Or something I sang~?" Sure, she had a light blush for continuing to press against shirtless Gale, and sure her hands were laced against his bare skin, but maybe--just maybe--these were things she ought to start getting used to.

Gale snorted. "Shirt, yes," he said. "Coat, no, that's my only good one, silly. What would I wear if I gave it to you?"

His eyebrows rose at her own comments. "You were born on a leap year?" he asked, quite fascinated by the concept of someone only having a few birthdays once every few years. "I never knew that. We'll have to figure something out for you, then, something really special."

The red flush to his cheeks only served to grow brighter and warmer the more she talked. Which, Gale soon realized, she was doing on purpose, her lips against his ear, her fingers warm against his skin. He rolled his eyes - a gesture she wouldn't see, but was more for his own benefit - and exhaled a long breath, feeling shy and hesitant and totally red in the face, despite all of his efforts to stay calm and collected.

"Nothing," he mumbled, and squirmed a little. "Nothing at all, nope. I'm totally fine, really. You have no effect on me whatsoever, I am totally fine."

Which was totally not true at all.

"'No'? Well if I had it and the shirt, I suppose you'd have nothing to wear~" Stormy answered airily, though it was clear without having to look that she was barely keeping back a fit of laughter at the thought. Note to self: get Gale some clothes.

She bobbed her head at his question, which ended up half nuzzling him due to their proximity. "Mmhmm~ Born on a day that comes and goes, right between two months, two worlds, two decans! I was split in personality from the start like the two fish of Pisces," she stated factually, which probably would have sounded wiser if she still wasn't wrapped up in her attempt to keep the pressure up on Gale.

Which, judging by the color of his face, was absolutely working. She grinned wickedly.

"Liar," Stormy accused in a most confident whisper as she kissed his ear. "What happened to being honest with me, huh? Now the cuddlemonster has to punish you!" But how . . . As Gale wiggled and her arms instinctively tightened their hold, she got an idea.

Time to see if he was ticklish. And look, he was conveniently shirtless for the experiment.

Her fingers started to explore as she gave an almost evil laugh.

"Yes, well," said Gale dryly. "I do need some clothes every now and then. I can't just go around wearing my knickers and trainers and nothing else, now can I?" A soft snort escaped his lips, which curved into a smile against Stormy's hair. "People would look at me even stranger than they already do."

He liked the fact that she was of two worlds, that she was somehow magical in this universe, but that appreciation was somewhat squashed by her attempts at making him squirm (which were succeeding). The ear she pressed a kiss to was now a bright red, Gale's face pressed determinedly into the pillow as he tried to keep his calm.

A calm that totally did not last very long, as Stormy would discover that he was, in fact, much more ticklish than he had ever let on before.

Gale jerked almost automatically the moment her fingers started moving, and then he froze stock still. Stupidly he hoped she hadn't noticed this very obvious gesture, but then her fingers moved again, and a snort escaped Gale's lips, though he tried to hide it, muffle it in the pillows.

"Not...fair," he mumbled, but then gave a shout of laughter, his cheeks pink as he rolled over, batting at Stormy's hands. "That is totally unfair, you're a dirty cheat!" More laughter bubbled over, Gale fighting to keep her off, his fingers grappling for her wrists.

When Stormy had said she had a problem with letting go, this apparently also applied to the physical realm: her grip was terribly secure as Gale rolled and attempted to pull her off. "If you did run around like that, I guess I'd have to keep you indoors!" she replied, trying to sound smooth but breaking into a bit of laughter herself. "Make it so that only I can give you looks~" Oh no no no, this was just too good to stop; now she had to know exactly how ticklish her boyfriend was for future reference. And the more she pursued making him fluster and melt, the less time she'd have to sit back and realize what exactly she was talking about.

At the back of her mind, a small part of her scoffed at how relentlessly she pursued childish, silly things, especially given what had happened today alone--that she ought not to be acting so blasé. But that was the beauty of Stormy's escapism: she made it look less like running away and more like running towards something better, like that was the natural path. She could pretend, if for a moment, that Gale had never seen her turn into a dark and sobbing mess, or that he had confessed anything to her in return, and that they were just spending time together like a regular couple stuck on a military island.

"I never said I played fair, cariño," she purred, continuing to explore and tickle him (ticklesplore?) as she breathed in his ear. "Just think! I can tell Ms. C that not only did I get you running to take your clothes off, but that we had a nice roll around in my bed that left you breathless~ And you called me dirty!" And she broke into more raucous laughter, the effort slowly draining the strength in her arms and hands as she fought for breath. There was no shame at this point; she was just gunning for it.

Being silly, being childish - it was exactly what he needed because Gale had never really gotten to be a child. He'd gone straight from one thing to the next without stopping, shooting to an adult way before his time; or at least, the appearance of an adult. He was not even really an adult, not legally, at least, no matter how much he tried to.

He loved when she slipped into Spanish, because it was another world she lived in, another beautiful little detail about her that he could file away to remember later. Everything about her was beautiful, vibrant, so full of life and energy and strange facts and mesmerizing words and elegancies that he couldn't even begin to fathom.

Gale reached up, his fingers curling around Stormy's wrists. "Candace is going to kill us both," he said breathlessly, and laughed, entwining their fingers together. "And you always leave me breathless."

With a strength he'd forgotten he had, he pushed upwards, pulling Stormy with him into his lap, letting go of her hands in favor of winding his arms around her waist to pull her close. "Now it's my turn," he said, and kissed her soundly, smiling against her lips.

"Killed, huh?" she managed between pants, grinning like an idiot. Stormy's fingers curled weakly over his hands, trembling from the exertion of her laughter. "I haven't even sent the message yet~ Maybe I never will now. Maybe I'll just keep it to blackmail you--make do everything that I say or I'll send it off to Candace and my brothers~"

She wouldn't ever go that far because she knew Evan would take it as a sign to pull out all the brotherly guns, and Tuck might follow suit. It wouldn't be too much fun to have an accidental battle on their hands. But Gale didn't need to know that.

"Then again, I've got you wrapped around my finger already," Stormy mused with a satisfied, if rare smug look.

She was far too weak to fight back and gave a half-formed, half-hearted protest as she was pulled in, expecting for Gale to retaliate by tickling her until she literally couldn't breathe anymore. When his arms came around her waist instead, she happily flopped against him instead, still recovering and finding that the best place for one to recover from anything at all was most definitely while huddled against someone else.

Yet when Gale pulled her into a kiss, she still found the energy to return it, her head and heart starting to ache from the simple but sweet happiness of the moment. The world began to tilt in a wonderful way, and she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled herself closer to avoid turning with it, because, though drained from laughing, she'd always scrounge up a little more strength for him. Heart beating erratically, Stormy eventually pulled away to gulp down air once more, her forehead and nose still touching his, each breath heavy and loud enough that she would have been embarrassed if she hadn't been busy feeling so stupidly pleased.

"Stay," she implored him in a breathy murmur, running a few fingers through his hair at the back of his neck. "Stay the night. We can forget about everything else for a little while, huh? Just you, me, and our personal universe." Stormy paused, then gave a wheezy chuckle. "And a third of a bottle of booze if you want."
