A Dance With Dragons

Dear Journal,

Casseth and I traveled to Soudul in hopes of reuniting him with his grandfather. We encountered a good bit more than just family along the way, however - and, in fact, have not even successfully tracked said family down - but we did manage to be attacked by dragons at sea, get denied stay due to persons assuming we were both hybrid, lose our hastars and half are luggage, and then get attacked by dragons twice more. It has so far, needless to say, been an interesting and exhausting journey. At least we've made it successfully to Obsidian City, however, more or less unharmed, and hopefully we will have some luck in tracking down Casseth's family via his surname.

Sincerely,
Lithian Bhardvaris

Blood of My Blood

Dear Journal,

We caught up with Casseth's grandfather today, with disastrous results. In retrospect I can barely stomach my naivete, but I suppose there is little I can do about it now. I simply could not imagine a man so full of hate that he would turn his own blood away. Not only that, but I feel certain that if it had not have been for Kilian's timely arrival, the older man would have seen both Casseth and I dead. I owe my life to Casseth's father. Again.

One day, I will need to repay the man in full. For now, I am simply grateful that my stupidity and blind faith in the world's goodness did not get both Casseth and I killed. We owe everything to our good luck and his father's quick blade.

Sincerely,
Lithian Bhardvaris

Part of Your World

Dear Journal,

I met the strangest oblivionite the other day - or, well, I suppose he was likely a hybrid, since he went to such great extents to hide most of himself, and there are a great number of odder ones out there. Regardless, though, we met by the most curious of happenstances: he had taken into his company a young khehora that I met a matter of perhaps just over a year earlier. The khehora still recognized my scent, it seemed, if vaguely, though I can hardly blame him, since he was much smaller at that point.

Raemos was the boy's name, I believe. He was very helpful, and generous, and we bought materials together. I have to wonder if the fates might ever bring us to meet again.

Sincerely,
Lithian Bhardvaris

A Prayer to the Dragon God

A ring of unlit candles stood in elaborate sconces: cold, silent, and still like patient soldiers waiting for the match. Come dawn, they would be lit by the priests of Abronaxus and fill the long, sloping halls of the Celestial Fortress with their flickering light, wreathe it in the rich, earthen scent of incense. The scent of prayer. Once upon a time Lithian had thought that he might like to join their ranks when he grew to adulthood, but as ‘adulthood’ grew ever nearer, his conceptions of what he intended for himself grew progressively vaguer and more convoluted.

On this morning, Lithian arrived well before the morning priests.

Before dawn and hours before anyone in his household had awoken, he slipped from his room and out to the stables on his parents’ estate. He saddled and prepped his hastar, mounted, and rode her directly to the temple of his god. There, with her safely tethered outside, he made his way in, knelt before his god’s altar, and he dipped his head. Lacing his fingers together, he prayed.

“Forgive me, Abronaxus,” he began quietly enough that even he, alone in the empty temple, could barely hear his own words. “I regret having to come call on you again so soon, and I hope not to be a burden on you, but I…am in desperate need of your wisdom, and guidance. I realize that I have spoken to you near every night and morning for the past three seasons, but I feel as lost as ever in ways difficult to explain, and I hope you will listen here, in your house of worship.”

The shadows lay dormant around him, the stone of the alter before him cool under his fingers, and Lithian suppressed a shiver.

“Something is…terribly wrong with me. Something unlike any sickness I have dealt with in the past, and though I have tried, I do not understand how to fight it, I…”

Lithian shut his eyes, biting his lip momentarily before letting it slip loose again and releasing a slow breath to gather his thoughts back together. When he spoke again, his words were back to a murmur.

“I feel things that I oughtn’t for my friend, Casseth. I suppose I have for some time, perhaps even for as long as I’ve known him, and perhaps to some extent they were always unnatural, but I had hoped these thoughts would move on with time, but…they have yet to, and as of late, they feel only as if they are worsening. My most recent trip to Soudul with him seemed only to solidify that notion. I…think of him, in ways that I should not, I want things of him that I know I should not, and I dream of him in…”

Lithian’s tongue tripped on him, throat constricting a half fraction and cheeks flaring to life as he thought of how, exactly, he had dreamt of Casseth last. Releasing another shuddery exhale, Lithian swallowed and rubbed his fingers along the ridges of one of his horns before lacing his hands back together and composing himself.

“Please,” he murmured. “Please, Abronaxus, help me to find interest in a woman — any of the young women my parents or siblings bring before me. Help my body in conducting itself appropriately, no longer holding me hostage to these…lewd and unasked for fantasies of the mind. I do not wish to want to kiss Casseth as he wishes to kiss girls, and I fear that if I cannot find a way to right my interests before he finds out, I…” Lithian curbed the instinct to stall again. “I could appal him, and scare him from me forever. I fear losing his friendship as I fear death…please do not let my anomaly harm those relationships which I value most. In your name I pray, may the elements guide me.”

With a flick of magic, Lithian drew up a single droplet of water, letting it hover above the small bowl in front of peisio’s blue candle before releasing it with a near-silent splash. A tribute to his clan and his god. Then, after a single bow and a touch of two fingers to his forehead in farewell, he left the temple behind him. His troubles, though, remained stretched out before him like an approaching storm, too full of tumultuous clouds for him to even begin to understand their full depth or what lay within.

Fire Song

Dear Journal,

At the insistence of my siblings, I went out for one of the first of the spring festival celebrations this evening. Admittedly I conceded to doing so entirely in the hopes of culling their pestering for some time, but as it happened, I did meet a fellow student there - a firani approximately in my age range who went by Vyren. He seemed a little fire happy, personally, though not terribly much worse than either Adela or Ysette. It was interesting to have a conversation with a stranger and have things go smoothly.

Perhaps my parents are right in thinking I ought to branch out more.

Sincerely,
Lithian Bhardvaris

Irida and the Pit

Dear Journal,

I trained hard with Casseth today, working over moves we were comfortable with and testing them on each other, then through some we were less practiced at. Exhausting as it is, I always feel I learn a lot when I spar with him. It's also never an unwelcome sight to see him [words are scratched out here and incoherent]

I enjoy watching Casseth fight, even when it is with me. Perhaps especially when it is with me. That is beside the point, though.

Our training was interrupted by a girl, Irida. She is in some form of relationship with Casseth and seems quite infatuated with him - and, I suppose, he with her. Casseth took her - and myself, since I was there at the time - down to an underground arena known colloquially as simply "The Pit". It was...an experience I hope not to duplicate, though unfortunately it sounds as though that wish is a fantasy. I watched a hybrid woman die, and listened to the crowds cheering in the aftermath, only to learn that Casseth intends to one day sign up for this atrocity himself.

I fear for him, and it hurts my heart in ways words cannot express to imagine what might happen if he is not as strong or lucky as he imagines...

Sincerely,
Lithian Bhardvaris

Dust in the Eves

Dear Journal,

I met with Vyren again, in the library of all places. Unsurprising to find me there, but I hardly anticipated running into him. Last I met him, he seemed far more the type to prefer testing his blade and fire on dragons, not scanning over text. The time with him revealed, though, that he did at least seem genuinely interested in some degree of research, though I still don't think he took particularly well to the idea of pouring over books. He asked for company on a dragon hunting mission, on Serenia specifically, and - partially since Ysette has been eager to get me back there regardless - I happily accepted. I can't say my word choice was the best, but embarrassing slips of the tongue aside, he didn't seem bothered.

It will be interesting to see Serenia again, and better to have company while at it than solely my sister.

Sincerely,
Lithian Bhardvaris

Admittances to the Wind

Dear Journal,

I had a conversation with Araceli this evening on the windy peaks of Ayr - one I never supposed I would necessarily have with anyone for fear of what the information might reap. Preceding it, she got the wrong impression, but once the words were out of me, it was oddly satisfying, in a way, but dreadful in a number of others, as though letting my thoughts have voice makes them truer than they were before I dared to admit them aloud. It feels almost as though I've given up - conceded some great struggle I wasn't entirely sure I was still fighting.

She accepted me, though, a blessing for which I have no words adequate enough to thank the gods with. I never knew there was anyone who could be as I was, assumed it was an illness or a twist in my mind somewhere where I ought to have turned left but somewhere in my far past I took a misstep and ended up walking right. To have her speak of it, though - to hear that it is not just me, and, if what she says is true, that it is no disease at all, is equal parts comforting and terrifying. As great a relief as it is to not be alone with this anomaly of mine I still wish it on Abronaxus to help me rid myself of it, lest I damage the relationships with those I prize most before I can help myself.

Sincerely,
Lithian Bhardvaris
