Why was he laughing now? Mimsy was growing increasingly concerned that her sense of humor was broken, or just hadn't come back yet. Did she have one? It kind of didn't feel like it.
"Well, even if you do that, you make me really happy too, okay?" She turned back to smile at him. "Be safe. Don't eat all of your stuff right at the start. That way you won't be too hungry to live when you make it to the end."
With that advice (which she suspected would not be followed), she blew him a kiss and waved goodbye, her attention returning to Shiloh.
"Hi! That was sweet. Um, everything that you were saying to your alpaca - er, Penny, I mean." Her smile was shy but persistent, and it bothered her that it was more and more difficult to have friendly conversations. She didn't want to be awful. "I guess it makes the trip easier, huh?"

The threat might have been empty or it might not have been but he certainly wasn't going to allude one way or the other - if she had protested, forced him...He likely would never follow through on his threat.
But all he did was n** her nose. Light and gentle, playful as could be.
It was a line being drawn in the sand. He didn't want to get carried away. Get caught up, drown in all of the beautiful emotions only to be shoved away again in the end when Freya felt he'd gotten too close for her liking again.
He looked over at the trail and then at her and he wavered for a moment, "A..Alright. Whatever happens at the end, Freya...If you...Whatever we uncover..Um.."
There was a quiet pause as his head bowed down. He wanted to tell her that it'd be okay if she wanted to stay the way they are now it would be alright, that he'd be alright with that change but yet ... It felt like there was something there and there was something missing between them. Just he couldn't put a finger on it. He either wasn't doing enough or too much.
"I want you to stay safe so I can see you again," this he could say with confidence.
"Don't eat all of my... aww maaaan.." The alpaca was already wandering away, but Robert had turned to keep his gaze on her, even afterward. How was he supposed to not.. eat.. all the things..
This trip was already a bust.
He waved his fingers at her, a very small, precious gesture. And he smiled.
"Bye, Mimsy."
At least it wasn't Mildred. (Which, Robert would later recall, was information he'd never known about her.. until now.)

Shun nodded to the ones who agreed to do the same. Then, feeling that he had rested well enough, he left to go on his way.
He laughed again, brushing his hair back out of his face sheepishly. "You heard that, huh?"
But she seemed kind and her smile was far shyer than his own, and he smiled back, pushing past her gently to rummage through his pack. "I guess it makes it easier, having someone to talk to. But you know, she's carried me all this way without complaint, so I owe her a lot. Don't you talk to your alpaca?"
He pulled several apples from his pack, and tossed one for Penny before offering another to Mimsy. He kept the third for himself, biting into it then turning to her with curious smile. "Or maybe you talk to... him? Is he your boyfriend?" he asked, nodding his head in the direction Robert had just left.

He was starting to get weird. Freya thought this was about the time she would try to escape, but she just listened to him stumble on his words, and try to get something out that she knew she should have been scared of.
But he didn't say anything. And she wasn't really scared, anyway.
One side of her lips rose in a smile, and she nodded, reaching out again to squeeze his hand. "Don't worry so much. I'd like to see you again too. We're friends, remember? We look out for each other." Her blush was finally fading, and she was settling back into safe territory. "I'll try to be real careful. And if I'm not.. I'll give you a holler. Sound fair?"
Even touching his hand felt almost dangerous and yet Kettil managed to put on a face of a easy smile, "Yes. We are friends, we look after each other," he agreed softly.
"..Very fair. And I'll ... call you if I get in trouble. So...We're there for each other," these felt like good words. Safe words. Words that would keep her from running away.
He wanted to hug her but he was afraid to and so he stood there awkwardly for a second before he started to head toward his Alpaca again, "I...will see you soon."

She wanted him to hug her, but she was afraid.
"Real soon." She assured him, letting go of his hand with an awkward smile.
He got on his alpaca after he was sure everything was settled and he sort of shifted uneasily in the saddle for a moment. This parting felt awkward, strange. Kettil wanted to say more to her. Spend more time with her.
Yet, there was time passing and it brought him no closer to the end goal.
She was more important but ....
He gave her a smile this time more confident now that they weren't so close and he wasn't in danger of overstepping any boundaries, "Real, real soon," he promised and then he was off.

Freya patted her fluffy alpaca, watching him go. Her smile seemed to fade, and turn just a touch cynical.
"Real, real, real.."
She just rolled her eyes and left it at that, hopping up on Foofoo Cuddlypoops and setting her walking.
"That's true! I didn't think of it that way." Mimsy's gaze found her alpaca, which didn't even have a name. "Well, I...no. But I'll try it this time! You make it sound so nice."
This time the food offered to her wasn't jerky, and it seemed as if he had plenty to go around. He'd even shared with Penny! She graciously took it with a nod and a smile.
"Oh! Thank you!" She turned the apple over in her hands, carefully nibbling on the skin. Bitter. The taste stayed in her mouth as she considered how to answer a question when she didn't want to think about the answer.
Because she already knew the answer was 'no'.
"Yes." But she could pretend. "We're on separate journeys, though! Do you have anyone you care about like that? It feels sort of weird, knowing how...you know. We forgot them."

"You should try it," he agreed, "It's good to have a bond like that, especially when you have to trust each other over tough terrain."
He smiled again, full of them it seemed, as she turned the apple in her hands before gently biting into it. By contrast, his was almost finished, and he offered what was left of the core to Penny, who'd eagerly devoured hers. It was a moment before Mimsy responded but he waited, patiently. After all, he had no where pressing to be quite yet.
"Ah, that's wonderful though," he exclaimed when she finally admitted it. "Even if you are on separate journeys, you are together in spirit... No wonder you don't need to talk to your alpaca, you two look very happy together."
He laughed then, before grinning at her question, his smile lopsided and toothy yet entirely endearing.
"Ah, no, no one that I know about. It's just me, Penny and the open road. But I agree, it's definitely strange that we forgot important people to us, and even our names. I wonder why..."
Mimsy continued to nibble at the apple, finally making it past the skin; shortly after, Shiloh offered the core of his own apple to Penny, and she wondered if she'd been doing it wrong. Maybe she just wasn't hungry.
"Yeah," she agreed, smiling down at the slightly-chewed apple. "I think so too."
She looked up just in time to catch his smile. It was a pity she already had a boyfriend, because his smile was as cute as everything he'd said to Penny.
Thinking that last thought made her mind feel a lot like a train that put on its emergency breaks.
"Maybe you'll still remember someone! I guess there's still time left. It seems like we have a way to go, at least." Stretching, she moved to offer the remainder of her apple to her alpaca. It cheerfully took the treat and seemed to look at Shiloh appreciatively.
"It must be for a good reason. It seems so dangerous to involve that many memories if it's not something important, right?" Laughing, she shrugged. "I don't know much, though, so anyone's guess is as good as mine."
She felt as if she should probably think differently, but it was hard to say she knew anything when she didn't remember what to know. Memory loss was a tricky thing.

Olivia was nearly asleep on Cotton's back, exhausted from the wares of travel, being attacked by bandits while on the road and then being saved by what seemed to be in memory a dear friend. His steady pace, because wow had it been pretty slow during that last stretch, had lulled her a little. Letting her rest her wounds as he continued to the next pitstop. It was like he knew where to go and a simple shake of his head was enough to alert her of their arrival.
She opened her eyes, blinking and staring into the twinkling lights that lined the trees. A small smile spread on her lips, they made it to the next pit stop. They were almost done. "Yay," she said weakly, sliding off Cotton to lead him to an area where he could regain himself while she did do herself. There were tents. She utilized one and decided to take a short nap.
