Shangyue's attention stayed on the crowd, though he was listening to the little confrontation to his side- it was an unexpected delight, he knew Halili and he knew Uchanjaa. It was a good sign for him and should send a strong message to those who doubted him- he wasn't just a violent usurper, he was a capable politician and he had support within the pride.

His eyes had a second to linger on Aysu and Caritas, considering the parts their families played tonight. But he didn't get to think about it too long before Tysu appeared, bringing with her the shaman's apprentice.

"Lailah," he greeted her amiably, "I'm happy you could join us, do you happen to know where your teacher is tonight or are you going to have to stand in?"

Aysu was growling quietly as she watched the group of slaves stand between Uchanjaa and Shangyue, her eyes still on Nina but her thoughts were wandering back to an encounter with Ikwezi earlier in the night. At least Xwaya still seemed to be thinking straight but she had no idea where Radimi was.

And then an unfamiliar guard appeared, guiding Lailah K'chol into the midst of the chaos. Her stomach twisted angrily and finally her attention was turned away from her youngest daught and she focused entirely on her eldest. She took half a step out towards Lailah and Tyfu, frozen when Shangyue spoke.

"Lailah," she murmured nervously, looking over to Shangyue.

Sitha was disappearing into the back of the crowd but the announcement of Lailah K'chol made her start and push her way back through toward the front again. The voice was familiar, another guard, but not one she knew by voice. Seeing Tyfu didn't help, she looked like a stranger. A new recruit of the king, perhaps.. how long had this been going on? Could nobody be trusted?

Looking around nervously, Sitha was beginning to lose her nerve. Shangyue seemed extremely calm and confident, barely fatigued from the .. confrontations of the earlier evening. It was rather intimidating, the best she could say of the situation at that moment was that so far she had no personal stake in this. Her entire family were relatively unimportant background characters in day-to-day life around the pride, they were safe.. but without any of them here now, she was feeling very alone.

Lunik refused to falter as Uchanjaa's eyes sized him up. He took comfort from the lionesses beside him and Shangyue behind him, safe. Zuri, at his side was bothered again, but Lunik didn't change his defensive stance to one of aggression. Enough blood had been spilled, he thought.

Mvushi caught up to him and he spared the lion a quick glance. No surprise, with Mvushi as a slave, he took Shangyue's side. The king spoke, and his words further filled Lunik with strength, but uncertainty returned with the face of the Shaman's apprentice.

User Image The white lioness did not answer right away, instead taking the time to look over Shangyue, his supporters, and the rest of the crowd around them. There seemed to be a decent number of lions gathered from all walks of life, ranging from the mysterious and unfamiliar male standing like a shadow behind the usurper, to the array of slaves and others standing between him and one of the Guards. She recognized most of those present, including her mother and two of her younger siblings.

It was impossible to tell, at a glance, whose side everyone was on. She knew that Shangyue had the support of his shadow, as well as the four lions sitting between them and Uchanjaa, who was clearly against the Prince. But the rest of the crowd...

She could make guesses, about her mother, about Caritas, about Nina, Najisi, Kin, Atsuko, Sitha, Hyousa, Upenzi, Akemi...but those would only be guesses, backed only by what she knew of those individuals and in no way supported by real facts.

The white lioness could easily guess what Shangyue wanted from her, given that he didn't seem to know where her mentor was. She hadn't yet decided what she thought about that, but she wanted to hear what he had to say for himself. First, however, she should at least answer his question.

"My guess is that you've seen Stellaluna more recently than I have, Shangyue," Lailah replied calmly. "I've not spoken to her since before your grandfather died." She hoped, fleetingly, that her teacher was okay. The fact that Shangyue didn't seem to know her location was somewhat promising.

"But tell me, Shangyue," she persisted. "Why? Why this...and why now?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
User Image Caritas felt her heart sink within her chest as the other black lioness brought forward Lailah K'chol. She had hoped, perhaps naively, that someone would come along and say "Surprise!" and that the Queen would still be alive, along with Selene and Fuu and this was all just a horrible prank...
...even as she thought it, she knew it could never be. And while she despaired of what seemed likely to happen next, she still had to be impressed by the younger female. Lailah was calm and poised, everything that they could want in a Shaman. Caritas wondered if she remembered the discussion they'd had long ago, when the white lioness was a young cub, about how she needed to share her blessings with the pride...and wondered how it would affect her judgement tonight.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

User Image He'd been about to think of some way to respond to Halili's not-quite taunt when there was a murmuring rustle in the crowd and in came a lioness he recognized as Tyfu, one of the newer Guards, followed by...

Lailah K'chol.

Damn. Was it really all over already? There was no doubt in Uchanjaa's mind what Shangyue wanted with the Shaman...or her Apprentice. This way he could legitimize his rule and at that point even the brown lion would have to bow to the inevitable or leave the pride. He couldn't, wouldn't! do that again. Not to Kibi.

But how he wished and hoped and prayed to the Great Lion that there was some way out of this, that Lailah would stand firm and refuse to help the Prince.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
User Image Satisfied that the Apprentice wasn't going to try and escape now that she was here, the Guard relaxed slightly and began to examine the crowd around them. Most seemed shocked to some degree, including the big brown lion not too far from them. He also seemed to be in a position of some defiance. Uchanjaa, she thought his name was.
Well, she'd keep an eye on him, as well as watching out for more trouble. But overall, the situation seemed to be under control.
She looked when the black and green lioness brought the apprentice. She watched as they approached Shangyue, and he spoke to them, listening intently. The gray-marked white lioness spared a glance at the lions around. Lailah was Aysu's daughter... An older daughter, at that.
She remembered being a cub, fascinated with the fact the older lioness' first litter bore a resemblance to one of the guards, but his inexperience around lionesses had told her that it was, quite literally, pure chance. Then again... Both Aysu's first litter, and the young guard, had unknown fathers... There was always the chance, in her mind, that they shared a father. But then... There were lions with cloud markings unrelated to Kin. It was all a matter of chance.
Nina wasn't missing the look her mother was giving her. She glanced at Najisi, quietly asking him if he could stand her not being there as another body between Shangyue and attack, only stepping away when he nodded. She glanced at her older half-sister, jealousy apparent in her eyes, before she walked up to Aysu, eyes now.. Apologetic. "Mother... Please understand... My half-sisters don't get bad looks for their ranks. They get praise. And my brothers can marry out of this rank... I'm doing what I'm doing... Because I want a chance, too, a chance I can't have because I'm female." Her brothers, if they didn't want to be and could find a lioness willing to help, could cease to be slaves. Without Shangyue's help... Nina-dini was trapped.
Bili didn’t hear most of Shangyue’s words but he quickly got the general idea from the actions and comments of the lions around him. He looked shocked and confused but surprisingly still though his inaction didn’t seem quite so strange if one took into consideration that was hunter and not a guard and that he was outranked by the presence of the head huntress.
“The Great Lion is almost asleep but still watching. We must not attack one of royal blood.” It was a tricky situation but the thought of attacking a prince felt like an unforgivable sin no matter what he had done. The hunter watched the tense exchange between Uchanjaa and one of his daughters feeling a great amount of empathy for the brown lion. “But royal blood has already been shed tonight. I will trust Hyousa’s judgment and follow her orders.” Unless his family seemed to in immediate danger, Bili decided he would stay in place unless the head huntress commanded him differently. His purple gaze followed the blue lioness whenever he wasn’t assessing the situation.
More slaves had formed a protective wall around the murdering prince who spoke without shame to the crowd, giving words of encouragement to the slave class in general. One slave even dared to speak aloud of the deaths of the prince’s parents as a matter of necessary “pruning” and that really had Bili looking shocked and disgusted. Just like his brother, Bili’s claws were visible and ready to strike. If the order was given, he already knew who his target was.
Then the Shaman’s apprentice was brought forward by a dark guard who seemed loyal to Shangyue and Bili quickly tried to meet his brother’s gaze. He had a feeling that whatever happened next would mark the end of this whole mess.
Onalim had been so busy running between her two parents, making sure her sibilng's (at least the ones she could find) were alright and being thrown half way into a panic attack not knowing where Stellaluna was. Her relationship with her little Shaman sister had never been a close one; but when the murdered happened and people were starting to become agitated; Onalim had sought out her sister for guidance. And after that had been with her almost continuously until now.
She didn't know where Stellaluna was specifically but the Shaman had given her a clue to where the location may be; it was somewhere that the brown lioness had found as a child. She said she was going into hiding with her apprentices brother; Iah for protection.
Onalim had stayed beside her dark mother almost exclusively during this confrontation and when Lailah was approached; she had ducked down lower in the back of the crowd to avoid any possible sighting of her.
Mawu had been a mess since all of this had rained down upon them. It seemed all at once things were happening. First her ex mate had joined the pride and sired cubs with a female here; much to her undecided feelings dismay; and now a murder and now her own child's wellfare. She was busy tucked under Onalims paw, cuddling against her white child's chest and looking like a deer in the head lights. She hadn't spoken a word at all for a few days and now that the apprentice to her daughter was being questioned; she was releived to know that Shangyue had no idea where Stellaluna was.
She felt her winged daughter duck slightly when the conversation began in the direction of Stellaluna and she couldn't help but duck down as well.
Now that Lailah was here, Shangyue seemed very focused on the conversation he was striking up with her. She was obviously avoiding the second part of his question while still behaving as though she was more than happy to use her status to get her answers, indeed standing in for Stellaluna in this situation. The crowd seemed awestruck by her capture, which made this very (intentionally) public conversation easy.
"I'll admit things progressed much more quickly than I expected, but when you start gaining momentum it's best not to fight it or you may miss your opportunity," he said, almost sounding thoughtful but using the same confident voice. The prince had trained for public speaking, of course. It was almost impossible not to see some of Selene in him as he stood calmly before this emotional crowd, just as she had the night before. If not for the wicked circumstances, it could have been a proud moment.
"My grandparents were old but healthy, they would have lasted long yet. I'm not sure my parents were even older than half of this crowd gathered here tonight. I would never make it to the throne without some intervention," he went on, "Surely you know how it feels, Lailah K'chol." Suddenly, he was glad he had the apprentice here. She might not be so easily manipulated but none of what he said was truly false. They were certainly distorted views compared to the way things were around here but that didn't make them untrue or wrong.
"You're young, you're an excellent student and a faithful member of the pride, surely you have views and ideas of your own. Things you're sure you would do differently, better than Stellaluna," he said, smiling, "But Stellaluna is young, too. She is healthy, well-liked and, if tonight's search is any indication, well protected by the pride. The different between us is that your position is elected, you are not born with a right to that power and so you can't just take it."
Aysu was frozen until Nina appeared, putting on an apologetic face and muttering some sob story about why it was necessary to side with a psychopath. She didn't trust Nina-dini's sad eyes anymore and she hated herself for it. This wasn't how the slaves were supposed to feel, they were not hated, they were loved- that was why the pride kept them here, kept them safe, rather than sending them out into the world without any divine protection.
She sighed loudly, realizing she had stopped breathing while staring at her young daughter. Still frowning, she looked back to Lailah and Shangyue, catching only bits and pieces of what the prince-king said. He was impatient and arrogant, that's why this happened.. and he was clearly hoping Lailah felt something similar from her own position. Aysu couldn't even be sure how her own daughter would respond.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 05, 2013 5:08 pm
User Image Her impression, as Shangyue talked, was that he was earnest and eager to win her over to his side. And yet, she knew as well as he did that the Prince was putting on a performance for the crowd. It was obvious in his bearing, in his projection. Which made her wonder what the lion truly thought. He sounded so casual, so blithe, even while talking about the deaths of his grandparents and parents. She hoped that this was part of the act, that he did regret their deaths on more than an academic level.
"Regardless of how I do or don't feel," Lailah replied at last, "I would not kill for power." Her voice was flat, as dispassionate as she could make it. That didn't make her own words any less true. Yes, she was different than Stellaluna and sometimes resented her own position. But she would never wish for her teacher's death.
The white lioness had to keep herself focused. She knew what Shangyue was doing, what he was offering. And while she hadn't yet decided that he was right...she hadn't decided that he was wrong either.
Shangyue only smiled at Lailah when she responded. Their situations were similar but very different, and not just for how they responded to them. Perhaps she would not kill for power but her position didn't truly offer her the opportunity to consider it, making her opinion (in his) less than final.
"Since nobody is able to present Stellaluna to me, I am going to speak to her through you," he said, changing his tone from almost cheerful and conversational to more serious, there was definitely a threat in his voice, "The violence will end here, nobody else needs to be hurt and we can resume a peaceful existence. Of course, the pride cannot be at peace while its leaders are not at peace with each other. I need the Shaman's support."
It was very similar to the conversation he had with Ianthe, though less outwardly threatening. He did indeed need the cooperation of the spiritual side of the pride if he was going to manage the society, and it would be so much easier if Stellaluna and Lailah would agree.
"The entire pride will benefit from my rule, I have not taken power without any idea of how I will handle it from here."
PostPosted: Mon Aug 05, 2013 5:38 pm
User Image If Lailah had been a female version of Shangyue, she probably would have taken the time long ago to figure out how to engage someone else's assistance in luring Stellaluna out of the pride and disposing of her in such a way that it seemed a completely innocent tragedy and allowing the Apprentice to advance.
But since Lailah was a different type of person who happened have similarities in her position to his, based on the duty she was chosen for as a newborn cub, she never even considered such actions. Violence was something that other people practiced, it was not something she resorted to.
However, even an idiot had to hear the implicit threat in Shangyue's voice as he spoke. She knew that he needed the support of the Shaman - even realized that he needed the support of the position, not necessarily Stellaluna.
If he thought that she would submit because of his implied threat, well, she was made of sterner stuff than that! Lailah considered what she had been told and formulated her own response.
"If you are speaking to Stelluna through me, then I must be obliged to speak for her to you, Shangyue. The Shaman is responsible for the spiritual well-being of the pride and so I ask you, on her behalf and on the pride's, to clarify. How will the pride benefit from your rule, that has begun with such bloodshed?" Yellow eyes gazed squarely into brown, silently demanding that he describe how this coup d'etat could possibly be worth the deaths that had already occurred.
She was apparently determined not to just go along with it, he wasn't yet convinced it was a problem but he wasn't exactly thrilled to have to explain himself. This was better, at least, than her shutting up and refusing to speak even for herself, let alone for Stellaluna.
"I have done no harm except to those who stood between me and the throne. I am not violent, I am strategic. I have been respectful of the Great Lion, acting when he is not forced to watch his rulers, his most favored lions, perish" he said, obviously twisting the situation but there was no point arguing the sides, he clearly knew them and everybody would settle on their own view of it, "The specifics of where it goes from here very much depends on the pride itself, which depends on the Shaman. Though we may start out divided because of this, you can count on my devotion to mending that. I understand the power of our pride and I know I now have to prove I deserve what I have taken."
He wasn't a fool, there was no right answer to her question. Evasion was not a right answer but he was acknowledging the complicated situation and saying things he could live up to. Still no lies.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 05, 2013 6:20 pm
User Image Hmmm. He was being careful with his words, and she could understand that. But that didn't exactly inspire faith or confidence in him. Shangyue seemed to be, by his own admission (even if it wasn't in those terms) a schemer and manipulator. That didn't mean he'd be a bad King, but it wasn't exactly what she wanted to see from a ruler.
But...if he was serious about mending the divide he'd made in the pride, that was a good starting point, at least. Lailah exchaled sharply.
"Very well. I will convey your...request...to Stellaluna," the lioness answered at last. "But I make no promises beyond that."
She still wasn't certain she could trust him. At least...not as much as she wanted to.
User Image Tyfu watched the exchange with interest. She had known the Shaman was important to Shangyue's plans, but she could see that the purple lion clearly wanted this Apprentice on his side. From what he said, it seemed that Lailah K'chol was in a similar position - a young lioness ever waiting for the far-flung future day when she would step into the role she'd trained all her life for.
But she had to give the white lioness credit for not yielding to the new King on the matter of loyalty. The kid was definitely sticking to her guns and refusing to allow Shangyue to manipulate her. Not bad.
Then again, given her ranking within the pride, this girl had probably been involved in politics most of her life.
The rumors and commotion had the lionesses interest. By luck she'd happened upon a group of lions. The whole pride was in disorder and chaos and every second of it was ... exciting. Zalediti hated to admitted given the fact many lives had been lost but it was interesting. She had come to the pride for her sister and agreed to lower ranks. The lioness held no loyalty either way.
Still , lions lives being lost was horrible. But Zalediti wasn't here to judge.
By the sounds of Shangyues words he sounded like he'd put some thought in to this. To Zalediti he sounded humble despite the lives lost.
User Image
It had been a pleasure to witness this chaos that Shangyue had unleashed on his own pride. He'd taken his own bloods lives just to obtain what it was he wanted. That was beyond stepping on a few heads. That was skull crushing a way to what you wanted and Chosimba had to admit that this lion had earned his deepest respects and loyalty.
Still the white lion carried his trademark frown and sat quite silently as he observed with cold restless eyes. Chosimba was extra interested in the apprentice though this not translate to his cold distant features. His eyes kept a steady stare upon her.
User Image
Akahana had come to the pride as a slave per Shangyues request. She had kept her head down and awaited for what ever it had been the purple lion was planning. And in the end it seemed it paid off. Quite excitingly actually.
Lives were lost. A pity she supposed but they weren't of any importance now. That wasn't the exciting part of this tale. The exciting part was that Shangyue had pretty much gotten what he wanted. Now he could stand up and be a greater lion than those that came before him. What ever that meant.
Akahana didn't really care what conditions he had in mind for the pride. What she cared about was how fun it had been. There she stood with the others with a self satisfied smirk despite all the blood that had been shed.
Besides, all of this was for the greater good she supposed. Yeah. Wow, all of a sudden Akahana felt really good about her self. Wow. She was a really good lioness for believing in Shangyue. She closed her eyes and focused her belief a bit more. There, she helped. She'd pat her self on the back if she had hands.
((Sorry for jumping in late. It took me a while to get m y groove back after vacation but im here now!!! : D !))
Ianthe was beginning to wonder what percentage of the pride knew that this coup was coming. Perhaps she'd been oblivious; after all, she wasn't particularly close to many of them. She spent most of her time assisting the huntresses or in quiet meditation; she really wasn't much of a socialite. Perhaps... perhaps this had been a mistake. She was seeing now that while yes, Shangyue was guilty of regicide, matricide, and patricide, his actions had popular support. What all had he promised them? That he'd raise their standing in the Great Lion's eyes? He was a king. Not a god. Or was that what the shaman's role in this was to be? All she could do was watch wide-eyed from her position behind her brother as he brought the shaman's apprentice into his fold.
There was so much she'd never considered. Her naivete could have killed her tonight, and silently she resolved that she'd never let herself be put in this position again. Whatever Shangyue was planning... could it really be worth all this? She could only wait and see. For now, she stood by her brother, too nervous to leave. If his supporters saw her supporting him, then perhaps they'd not turn against her as they clearly had against the rest of the royal family.
