There it was again: that weird high. She'd felt it only a few times before, always while wielding Thane: against her brothers, with Jake in the desert, and now here fending off Gale's attack, remembering the stunned look on his face when she had come at him with a flaming sword. It was . . . probably not a good sign knowing that her pleasure came from a twisted source, but it was like the comfort the Book of Pride gave her: a guilty pleasure to steel her sometimes wavery nerves. It was something small, something manageable. She could handle it since it wasn't very common at all.
That's what she told herself at any rate.
Stormy made a note to tell him about the artifact some time nevertheless, given that it might have a horseman connection she was not yet aware of.
For now, she kept her weapon steady and braced herself against the slam of Gale's rifle, still grounded when she pushed him off (though only just). "Much better! You almost got me there."
She did look winded still, but there was forced energy in her voice as she raised her greatsword once more.
"Again!"

Gale leaned on his rifle and studied Stormy, carefully examining the look on her face. He still wasn't entirely certain this had been a good idea in the first place, but at least she wasn't thinking about other things that could be worse.
"All right," he said, and readied the rifle, taking a breath. "Here goes nothing!"

Thane rattled with amusement as once again she fended him off, once again only just. Stormy felt proud of herself that her training was beginning to show--it was hard to tell when it was only in intense combat or against motionless dummies. "Still close! Okay, third time's the charm and your last shot, Sherlock."
Her body might have looked like it was waning, but her eyes were bright with newfound enthusiasm as she grinned at Gale and braced her greatsword once more. "Come on and give me everything this time, not nothing!"

He laughed. "Third time is never the charm for me, Watson," said Gale, as he spun the rifle around in his hands. "I seem to get in these streaks of terrible luck where I do nothing but miss. It's rather pathetic, actually."
This time he managed to crack against her FEAR shield. It wasn't shattered, but it at least did more than he had before.

The slam was more forceful this time, and sadly as excited as Stormy was getting for herself, there was only so long she could hold out for before something happened. This time the crash had their weapons bounce off each other, a graze of her shield telling her it had been a close one this round, even if it ended as a stalemate. Thane rumbled with a full charge, but she knew better than to even think of trying this time and thus desummoned him back to his ring form before the dracolich could fill her head with all sorts of satisfied growls and coercions.
Rather, she got a disgruntled and most displeased noise instead when he lost the Fear he'd been clutching at.
"Whew!" Stormy swiped at her forehead with the back of her hand, wiping it off as she approached Gale. "That was intense for a moment there. But don't feel bad, defending has been one of my solid points from the beginning. I actually met Jake because I helped pull his butt from the fire once by defending him from, like, this mob of monsters." She was never, ever going to let that go, not when it was one of her prouder moments as a Hunter.
"Never say never, though. The third time was the charm--you broke past my defense! And you were holding back even, I bet," Stormy added with a teasing tone. "And that's fine if you were, I'm not taking offense; really I'm glad that my training's starting to show at all. But if you get into your streaks of bad luck, then . . . deep breath, right? And focus." Rising a little on her feet, she gave him another little kiss to his cheek and settled down with a smile, without hesitation this time. "You said on the ship I was helping keep you sane, so . . . if you want, you can think of me if that helps."
< < That makes absolutely no sense to take your mind off the battle. > >
He wouldn't say something like that unless he meant it.
< < Your soft brains have so little logic to them. > >
Stormy pressed a hand to her waist with a wince, glad the shield had taken the brunt of damage but still able to feel the impact from his gun. "How about we take a breather, get some water, and after our shields recover we go in for some long range practice?" she suggested.

Gale desummoned his own weapon just as quickly as Stormy desummoned hers, the ring forming in a soft glow of light around his right index finger. He rubbed absently at it and peered carefully at Stormy, trying to see if she was really all right, or if she was just doing that thing where she said she was, but wasn't really.
"I need to work more on my defending," said Gale, as she stepped towards him. "And I need to talk to Jake more, it seems he keeps getting his arse stuck in places they shouldn't be."
The last part was said with a little dry affection, Gale giving a small sigh. He glanced down at Stormy and smiled a little. "Deep breath and focus," he repeated after her, his cheeks flushing a little at the kiss. "And you do help to keep me sane, because hearing you is what grounds me, gives me something solid and fixed to hold onto. It doesn't distract me, it keeps me more focused, actually."
He returned the kiss to his cheek with one to her own, an expression of concern flickering across his face at her wince. "Come on," he said, and slid an arm around her waist gently. "Let's go get something to eat. Maybe we can make smoothies in the kitchens?" he added lightly.

Tired, yes, but at least not bruised or banged up despite the weakened shield; her defending had prevented actual harm from coming to her. The original ball of twisted satisfaction inside of her was completely gone, leaving Stormy with just a simple beam to give Gale at the returned kiss; like she hasn't just fought with Thane internally. "You're getting used to this," she mentioned with a small flush and a proud undertone, sliding an arm around his waist in turn. "I'm super flattered I help at all, you know, even though I think it's funny that something stormy keeps you grounded. Just don't get caught in those dreamy thoughts, okay~?"
And don't get distracted when I get hit.
"We can start off with you defending when we get back," she added with a nod. "Now that you've watched me do it and all. And then I'll back off and defend against your bullets and be a moving target and stuff." She tried not to sound even remotely antsy about being shot at, which was different from being swung at because she was used to it by now. "If you do go see Jake, though, tell him I said hi~" She would have asked for an update on the thing with Sherry, but...Hmm, they might not have met yet. She didn't want to put pressure on him after all!
Catching Gale's concerned look, she decided on impulse to be stubborn on this topic; perhaps she had developed a hint of ego after all. "Mmm...fruit'll churn in your stomach if you do workouts right after," Stormy mused as they walked. "Or at least, thats 's what happened to me before. Smoothies, my dear Sherlock, sound more like a prize than a break anyway. I suggest we do water for now, cool off a few minutes, and then finish up! Promise I'm not too banged up for a little more work. And I will happily make whatever smoothie you want then for finishing the Stormy Strict Course of Multi Sniper Use~"

"Getting used to what?" Gale asked, arching a brow, the corners of his lips quirking upwards in a small smile. "Being affectionate with you?" He squeezed Stormy's side, laughing a little shyly. "You make it easy for me to be comfortable around. Unless you meant getting used to fighting against you, in which I will just take a moment to get my foot out of my mouth."
"And I promise," he added, with a sideways glance. "No dreamy thoughts unless I'm outside of battle."
He may or may not have pouted a little. "Fiiiiiine," said Gale, exaggerating the word out long. "No smoothies yet. Smoothies will come after more training - and some water. We'll take a ten minute break, get back to sparring, and then once we've got that down, we'll go make smoothies."

"Oh...I should try and learn to be more specific!" she noted with a little laugh. "But I suppose that's accidental Stormy Speak for you: meaning multiple things at once. I did mean the affection, but the battling reason is just as sound! "
She gave Gale a pitying pat on the back at his pout, smiling sweetly at him. "The smoothie is better at the end of the road," Stormy told him. "You are Hercules, and I am Phil, and Olympus is the smoothie: once you prove you're a true hero, you can get it!"
The pat turned into a light slap on the back, like "bros" did. That was right, right? She'd seen Evan and Tuck do it sometimes sorta..."Take ten, rookie," she added with a grin, trying to sound gruff like the cartoon satyr.

Ten minutes later, and Gale was still attempting to convince himself that this was the right course of action.
"Well, let it just be said, I'm not that good at defense," he said, face flushed a little as he got into position, the sniper rifle resummoned and held within his grasp. He shifted his feet, trying to find a better balance, and then gave a deep breath, nodding at Stormy.
"All right," he said. "I'm ready."
He almost said come and get it, but somehow that did not quite seem right.

After ten minutes, Stormy had barely overridden Thane's constant suggestions to try just one more time on that charge. Being a perfectionist, it bothered him immensely that their first time resulted in failure, and they needed to fix that right now.
This is a friendly practice spar, not a real fight.
< < And how will you know what to do once we do need it? > >
You'll feed it to me easy and simple and not try to toss it all at once.
< < That was never how this attack worked, and why you believe it would now I cannot understand. You either act or you flinch, Hatchling; let us hope you learn how to quash the former as an instinct. > >
"Alright, on your guard!" Stormy answered with a dapper look, resummoning the greatsword and immediately pulling it up in a horizontal cut.

As Stormy swung down the sword, Gale, gripping the rifle sideways, thrust it upwards, the metal shrieking as it slid along the blade. He pushed forwards, throwing her away from him, and then backtracked several steps, gritting his teeth.
"Oy vey. This is harder than it looks."

"Oy vey"? She laughed a little as she backed away. "Only in the beginning! You're just probably used to swinging it more than you are holding it in place." Mind you, she figured holding a sniper rifle like that at all was probably awkward, so she commended Gale for figuring out a way to divert her attack.
This time she swung the greatsword from above with greater force behind it. "The trick is in the stance more than just your arm strength, that's where most of the sturdiness comes from. And also seeing if there are any places you can naturally catch attacks!"

"Well, the rifle isn't exactly a weapon easy to hold," Gale said, a little dryly, and gave a hiss as Stormy's sword collided with his weapon again, stumbling back a few steps. "Being shorter is also a disadvantage, my arms tend to be a little too short to reach, especially in retaliation to older and taller hunters."

"True. This is a bit unnatural as far as wielding it goes." She beamed regardless. "Good thing we're used to weird and unnatural~ Don't think of your height as a shortcoming though!"
Yes she paused to snicker at her own pun it was a good one okay.
"It means being a smaller target too, and being faster and lighter. That's what Death needs anyway to go undetected and stuff."
Stormy studied his form for a moment, clutching at the handle before trying the overhand swing one more time.
