Lacey shook her head. "No mama. Its fine." She smiled warmly.

Beta nodded slowly. "Alright. Oh! Maybe when you're settled, you can meet your Uncle Gamma." Lacey hadn't met Beta's brother yet...

Lacey tilted her head but simply nodded and smiled after a moment. It was turning dark and she was getting tired. "Maybe in the morning Mama. I just wanna sleep right now." She said with a soft smile.

Beta nodded and gave her daughter one last nuzzle before getting up. "Alright. Sweet dreams, Iota." Then she turned to go find Cairbre and settle down for the night herself.

Grimm watched from the trees as the Azrien in the area all settled down for the night, though a few went to patrol the perimeter one last time before drifting off. He silently made his way towards Iota and her foals. He was sure they were probably fine, but...

Lacey was stretched out, her wings over her babies, Roman and Remus on one side, and R-- on the other. All three were tucked safe and sound and were sleeping with their sweet baby sounds being the only soft things Lacey heard. Her neck had been flat against the ground until she saw hooves. She looked up, her eyes taking in the sight of that strange azrein. "Can I help you?" She asked, careful to keep any edge out of her voice.

He'd been caught. Grimm shook his head to her question. "No, I am fine. Seeing the four of you well is more than enough to satisfy me." A piece of him wished for her story, but he couldn't ask Iota to give it. It was still fresh and it was likely an agonizing tale.

Lacey studied him for a moment, trying to read his expression but unable to. Finally she motioned for him to lay down in front of her so they could talk on the same level. "Who are you?" She asked softly.

Grimm obeyed and laid down in front of her before replying. "Grimm Fate. Deal maker, straw spinner..." Smiling as he brought attention to the golden thread he'd spun from the straw. "And one of the stars of a rather interesting fairy tale."

Lacey tilted her head and smiled. A fairy tale? Now this she had to hear. "Okay you've got me intrigued, deal maker. What's this fairytale?"
PostPosted: Wed Jul 03, 2013 10:46 pm

Grimm smiled.

"Once upon a time, there was a poor miller with a beautiful daughter. He wished to get the attention of the king, so one day, when he was in the king's presence, he proclaimed, 'I have a daughter who can spin straw into gold.' This, of course, intrigued the king. 'Bring her to my palace,' he commanded, 'And we shall see if your daughter is truly as talented as you say.'

So the next day, the miller's daughter was placed in a room full of straw. Given a spinning wheel and reel, the king told her, 'Spin all of the straw in this room into gold. If it is still straw upon my return tomorrow morning, you will be put to death for lying to the king.' And with that, he locked the miller's daughter in the room and left.

Of course, the miller's daughter could not spin straw into gold, and began to weep. All of a sudden, she heard a voice speaking to her. 'My dear lady, what ails you so?' She looked up and saw a small, impish creature. 'Alas,' she replied, 'I must spin all of this straw into gold for the king, but I cannot. If I fail, the king will kill me.' The little man looked thoughtful. 'I can spin this straw into gold,' he informed her. 'But you must give me something in return.' That seemed fair, so the miller's daughter gave him the necklace around her neck, a memento from her mother. Accepting this payment, the manikin proceeded to spin all of the straw into gold. Once he was done, he vanished into thin air.

The next morning, the king entered and was amazed to find the straw had indeed been turned to gold. Greedy for more, he put the miller's daughter in a larger room with straw and gave her the same instructions: 'Spin this straw into gold; if you fail, you will be killed.' And after the door was locked, the little manikin appeared with the same offer. This time, the miller's daughter offered him the ring on her finger, a memento from a deceased fiance. Accepting the payment, he spun the room's straw into gold and disappeared again.

The king was overjoyed to find the room once again full of gold. But a king is always in want of more gold, especially in hard times. He brought the girl to an even larger room full of straw and declared, 'Turn all of this straw into gold before I return in the morning. If you succeed, you shall be my wife.' For even though she was a commoner, a miller's daughter, he could not ask for a richer wife.

But when the door was locked and the little man returned, the miller's daughter lamented. 'I have nothing to give you to spin the straw,' she told him. The manikin thought for a moment, then made an offer, 'Then promise me, if you do indeed marry the king, that you will give me your firstborn child.' The miller's daughter hesitated for but a brief moment before agreeing. And so the little imp-like creature spun the gold as he'd done the previous two nights, and once more vanished like smoke once the deed was done.

When the king came in the morning and the straw was gold once more, the king happily married the miller's daughter. It was not long before she gave birth to a beautiful baby. But she couldn't bare to give the child to the imp-man like she'd promised. So when he appeared to collect the child, she pleaded with him to change their agreement. But the deal was made, and could not be changed. Instead, he proposed a new one. 'If you can guess my name within three days, I will let you keep the child. If not, our previous agreement stands.'

So the queen thought the whole night of all the names that she had ever heard, and she sent a messenger over the country to inquire, far and wide, for any other names that there might be. When the manikin came the next day, she began with Caspar, Melchior, Balthazar, and said all the names she knew, one after another, but to every one the little man said, "That is not my name."

On the second day she had inquiries made in the neighborhood as to the names of the people there, and she repeated to the manikin the most uncommon and curious. Perhaps your name is Shortribs, or Sheepshanks, or Laceleg, but he always answered, "That is not my name."

On the third day the messenger came back again, and said, 'I have not been able to find a single new name, but as I came to a high mountain at the end of the forest, where the fox and the hare bid each other good night, there I saw a little house, and before the house a fire was burning, and round about the fire quite a ridiculous little man was jumping, he hopped upon one leg, and shouted -

'To-day I bake, to-morrow brew,

the next I'll have the young queen's child.

Ha, glad am I that no one knew

that Rumpelstiltskin I am styled.' '

You may imagine how glad the queen was when she heard the name. And when soon afterwards the little man came in, and asked, "Now, mistress queen, what is my name?"

At first she said, 'Is your name Conrad?'

'No.'

'Is your name Harry?'

'No.'

'Perhaps your name is Rumpelstiltskin?' ..."

He paused, then continued.

"The ending of the story varies on the teller, but a common one is... 'The devil has told you that! The devil has told you that,' cried the little man, and in his anger he plunged his right foot so deep into the earth that his whole leg went in, and then in rage he pulled at his left leg so hard with both hands that he tore himself in two." His story done, he focused his attention back on reality. "And that is the story of The Miller's Daughter and Rumpelstiltskin."

Lacey gasped. How many times had Rogan told her this tale as a discouragement from lying and making deals. You're Rumplestiltskin?" She asked incredulously, her wings instinctively tightened over her babies.

"In the immortal flesh." Grimm looked down at his thread again, moonlight shimmering off the gold wrapped around his hooves. "Though quite frankly, the fairy tale left out quite a bit of the after story... and I definitely didn't tear myself in two."

Lacey was quiet. digesting the information. She had always thought him to be evil.. but.. This stallion.. There was nothing evil about him. She looked down at her babies and gave them all a quick nuzzle. "Why did you help me then?" She asked, looking up at him curiously

"If I must have a reason..." Grimm's gaze went to the three blankets under Iota's wing. "I have a soft spot for children." Glancing up at Iota herself, he added, "And possibly a soft spot for you." The mare likely didn't know it, but he'd had an eye on her for a long time...

Lacey blushed and resisted the urge to look away. "But you don't even know me." She said disrupted by Roman's sneeze which set the grass beside her on fire. She reached out a wing and covered it, snuffing it out and ignoring the burning sensation.
