Ralvyn was, at the moment, infinitely grateful for the calming presence of Masterhealer Bereck. It was outright bizarre, true, to be lying on the sands while the Hatching went on around him. He uncurled enough that he could at least see a little section of sand and sky clearly: things happening in his peripheral vision, Bereck bending over him, Malta coming over – Malta!

“I’m all right,” he told her, although his voice sounded confused and uncertain even to his own ears. There was an awful lot of blood around, and he suspected that most of it might even be his. His head hurt horribly, and so did his arm and shoulder. Deep breaths, Bereck had said. Deep breaths. He could do that. He tried to focus on breathing, because breathing was easy: there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with his lungs, at least.

Something terrible had happened. He could hear the dragons keening and Weyrlingmaster V’tyai shouting at someone, and he knew that one of the hatchlings had gone between because dragons only keened like that when someone went between. “What’s going on?” he asked, because lifting his head to look for himself would definitely contradict Bereck’s order to stay still, and some part of his healer training instinctively informed him that moving one’s head with possible head injuries was a Bad Plan.

Ralvyn, are you all right? The new voice, soft and female, came from not a person. It was a dragon. A tiny golden head had wandered into his peripheral vision, and was now peering down at him with worried rainbow eyes.

“I’m all right,” he repeated, puzzled by this odd turn of events, “but hold on, why are you talking to me?” He hadn’t suddenly metamorphosed into a girl. All teasing by the other Healer apprentices aside, Ralvyn would have noticed if that had happened. That was the sort of thing that caught one’s attention.

“Congratulations, Malta…?” Well, she was the nearest girl. Perhaps the new gold was just being nice to him? “I’m not a girl,” he told the dragon, in case she hadn’t realized it yet and just needed a little gentle guidance in this department.

I know, Zenaith explained patiently. (He knew her name was Zenaith. How had he known that?) I’m not a gold.

Some people said that when you fell in love, the world went silent and fireworks burst through the sky. Well.. This was so much better than that. Marue bit her bottom lip as she watched the Noisy Sociolite egg burst, and the beautiful hatchling came forward. She commanded attention, dominated those puny little greens with beauty and ferocity. Now that was a dragon. Saain's presence fell out of Marue's mind completely as the girl waited, and rightly so.
Marue. How the shards did all this happen while I was still stuck in an egg? I'm not missing anything ever again, and you need to work on not getting yourself mauled. The dragon looked down at Saain, and a lip half lifted. What was this dirty little creature doing near Hers? Well. It seemed like she was helping. Sturnuth would allow it.
Marue bit her lip, smile widening more so than she ever thought it could.
Well, my darling, maybe if you hadn't taken your sweet time getting out of that shell of yours, this wouldn't have happened. Her tone was laced with love as she reached out and wrapped her arms around her wonderful gold--Oh please.
I'm not some run of the mill gold, thank you very much. Everyone knows Yellow is so much better.

Marue gave a small laugh, Quite Right too. Everyone knew gold was the softest metal. Why would anyone in their right mind prefer gold?

Marue took hold of Sturnuth's neck, pulling herself to her feet. She straightened her posture as best she could, and smoothed her hair back in place. Her legs trembled beneath her, but she'd be damned if she was going to bumble about like some sharding cripple. She was a Du'Lace, and now, she was a dragon rider. Sturnuth arched her back under Marue's weight, both rider and dragon pure examples of posture and everything else that was awesome, with their heads held high as they made their way toward the meats. That's right. All of you. Suck it.
Such words Marue would never be uncouth enough to say out loud, but she didn't have to. They knew, and if they didn't, they were daft.
We're going to rule the world, Mine.
Damn Straight, my darling.

Needless to say, No one in the Weyr was ever going to hear the end of this.

Zareen of Brown Zyxth

The brown rider had almost left the stands when the little grey had been killed, not wanting to see anymore hatchlings murdered, but her curiosity got the better of her and so she stayed, her bronze curling up on her lap to offer her comfort.

She had impressed far too recently for it not to break her heart, she was supposed to be remembering impression, not thinking about what might not have happened. Hopefully he hadn't impressed before being shot, but since it seemed as if the only ones who had fallen were the injured ones, she was fairly certain he hadn't. That was the only good thing about that.

It will be alright, her dragon commented. And I am here for you.

I know.

She was rather pleased that she had stayed when the gold, no, make that golds hatched, the first claiming one of the prisoners, and the other claiming a boy? Something was seriously strange about this clutch.

First the grey, now a boy impressing gold? She was fairly certain that golds didn't impress boys, but maybe he was really girly? Huh. Hopefully M'onk wouldn't kill her, she had impressed, and hadn't hurt anyone.

Oh, boy. What else was this clutch going to throw at them?

Joscelin

Joscelin lift an eyebrow in polite inquiry as the Noisy Socialite finally hatched. Gold? He wasn't really sure, everyone said that gold eggs were clearly gold and the purple shell while large wasn't right with the stories. He snorted as she screamed, head tipped slightly to show his disdain for the screaming gold on the sands. Again? This one shrieked more than his sisters after a bad breakup.

Ooh look, she chose the girl that got mauled earlier and screamed just as high pitched and ear deafening as herself. How very appropriate. He was rather glad they didn't co-ed the barracks, at least he didn't think they would considering the age gaps and he rather pity who ever ended up bunking with those two.

Screech, screech, flapping lips and all.

Wait... was that a second gold? Joscelin blinked, looking over the clutch and back at the paler hatching. Had she hidden eggs? He had been so sure there had been thirteen but the eggs were all accounted for. He watched the surprise move off to a small group of healers... the master he recalled and he believe the mauled boy and the girl were apprentices. Hmm, this was so very intriguing.
______________
Saain

And she was being ignored again. Saain clicked her tongue, irritated the girl and well life in general at the moment. She sighed and giving up, wrapped the wound tightly in the sash and paused as something gold -yellow?- brushed pasted her. A hatching?

She looked up and then back at Marue and smirked slightly. "Well, it seems you are going to be able to get medical help sooner than I thought." And get out of my sights. Saain ignored the hatching, standing gracefully and absently brushed sand from her clothing. Marue was to twitter pat to notice her and Saain did not care to bother. Leave it alone...

Two golds? She paused, looking over the healer corner and the second gold-yellow?- they didn't seem shinny enough to be golds but she never had really seen a gold up close. Not one healthy so how was she to judge what was normal? Still, at least it seems that both of them had impressed without much fanfare. Good.

Canoake watched as not one but two gold dragons hatched from the eggs on the Sands. She didn't remember the one egg when she went through the touching but there had been so many eggs and candidates on the Sands, she might have missed one or maybe two.

Maybe they should let blues catch small golds more often?

Things were already weird with that poor gray dragon being murdered on the Sands. And now as the two golds stalked forward, she secretly hoped and wished for one of them to approach her. She even crossed her fingers, some silly thing left over from a childhood she wished to forget at times. But noises from the other side of the sands caught her attention again and Canoake turned back to watch C'ross and V'tyai glare angrily at each other. She was pretty sure they were about to come to blows when a wher handler stepped forward to try to.. stop the fight? Calm the Weyrling Master down? She wasn't sure. Either way it was bound to be interesting. But the Hatchlings were doing something. Turning back, she watched just in time as one of the golds impressed to that crying, sniveling girl who had been injured.

Really? To her? She guessed gold must like whiny girls. Or maybe, it took pity on her. Either way, Canoake's blood pressure was rising again. Not only was the hatching going poorly or was it going well? She wasn't even sure at this point, but now what the sharding... Canoake actually growled outloud. She was positive of it and her nails bit into her skin as she clinched her fists even tighter. A gold was sitting in front of the mauled boy.

And since there was only the older medic who had a green and was that a sniveling healer heading towards him? Yes, Canoake definitely saw red. A gold was NOT supposed to Impress to a boy. A stupid boy who had nothing better to do than get mauled by a gray that didn't deserve to die. If she actually allowed herself, the teen might have actually had tears in her eyes. But she refused to be seen as weak. Canoake would get hers, oh yes she would... And if she had to actually swallow pride, or at least, tone it down a little to be nice to one of the gold riders. Well, after this ordeal was over, she was going to have to reevaluate several things.

Including, it seemed, V'tyai. But curse it! To a bloodied boy of all things!! She wanted to stamp her feet in anger but managed to hold very still.

Nicoth was not at the Hatching. As far as I'saak was concerned, this was a good thing. Frankly, the very last thing he needed was his foul-tempered, dragon-aggressive green getting too close to hatchlings. And the longer the Hatching stretched on, the gladder I'saak was that the green hadn't attended. Because he didn't trust Nicoth's genetic programming against harming humans, and the actions he had seen...

It had been going so well, too. The greens hatching, Impressing without incident. And then...there had been a glimmer of gold in one egg, and a burst of - he still wasn't sure. White, or grey, or a deformed green or blue, perhaps. But it had gone after Candidates - nothing I'saak hadn't seen before. Run of the mill mauling.

Until C'ross.

At first, I'saak wasn't sure if he had seen what he thought he saw. There were no real formal Stands, so he was at enough of a distance that it had looked - strange. Confusing. He had been able to pretend he hadn't just seen his wingsecond lift his crossbow and -

The dragonet flashed between.

I'saak stood stunned, staring at C'ross's hands. Maybe it had been the deformity, the fact that there had been something clearly wrong -

And then V'tyai was screaming in C'ross's face, and Taavetti was getting between them, and I'saak stood, and watched, and panicked. His wingsecond had shot a hatchling. Had deliberately shot a hatchling. He had not seen M'onk, had not seen anything other than the man holding the crossbow, and the grey flashing out of sight. C'ross had killed a hatchling.

His hands shook. He said nothing. In the back of his mind, Nicoth curled fierce and protective.

[Malta]

Malta was just happy he was talking! And awake! And alive! She didn't even know she was smiling with relief. He was alive. He at least was alive!

A pretty dragon came over, a hatchling. She didn't even notice until it asked if Ralvyn was all right.
"I don't...
Wait, rainbow eyes meant the dragon had impressed, but it was a gold and golds went to girls and... it wasn't her, right.
No. No no? She stopped talking.
Wait, would it get hurt too!
Malta wasn't sure quite where to turn.

Clearly the only answer was back to Ralvyn to help the masterhealer, though the most she was probably allowed to do was hand him stuff.
"Just... Stay still, Ralvyn..." she pleaded anxiously, glancing at the dragon for a moment before she went back to helping.

[Emmitod]
Emmitod winced and had to lie back from the pain.
Noooo, he was missing the show.
He managed to sit up in time to see two... golds? break their shells.
interesting!

[Raolan]

Raolan's gaze didn't leave the cluster of healers and...
Gold?
Dragon.
He hoped the kid would be all right. The other one, the whiny headache-inducing girl had also impressed.
good for them. He was not having happy feelings about this clutch though.
He could see Canaoke fuming. That one was full of vinegar.
'Yeah. His stomach agreed. Not happy feelings.
But there were more important things to deal with than his stomach.

To say that Descanth was devastated would be an understatement. The crippled green did not scream or lunge at Merceth or lash out – but when the Kestrel took a fatal bolt, she keened a low heartbreaking note as if one of her own eggs had been destroyed in front of her.

And M’ska? M’ska was not a man to raise his voice. V’tyai was the kind of man who could stride up to C’ross and shout at the squadsecond and snarl and nearly come to blows. But the greenrider was quiet. Even when Brakiheth died, he was not among the shouting arguers; his place had been with the Weyrwoman, offering what comfort he could. There was no comfort to be offered today, but there were quiet words to be had.

M’ska did not miss much that happened on the sands, and he saw the hesitation. He saw who the brownrider had looked to before he leveled a weapon. And so while V’tyai dealt with the executioner, M’ska deftly edged his way along the sands to lodge a protest with the judge.

He stood by M’onk, pleasant and seemingly unassuming as always. “Have to get your new favorite dog to do the dirty work for you, Warden?”

M'onk's face turned an interesting shade of pink when wherhandling filth stepped out to calm the fierce bluerider and C'ross, dear obedient boy, snapped back at him. The pink crept to his ears when those two Golds appeared n the Sands. One drifted to a .. shaffing prisoner and one to a Healers apprentice. The apprentice was at least acceptable, even if she looked a bit too young.

Except she talked to the boy.

The boy that talked to the gold.

People were going to die.

The flush faded with M'ska's approach, the old Warden having calmed himself with a few slow breathes easily passed off as an old mans weakened attempts to breathe. He smiled at the greenrider, eyes once more crinkled at the edges, and he chuckled.

"My hands are old and weak, M'ska. You know how it is." The bronzerider looked to the eggs on the sands and the dragons already Impressed instead of the scene with C'ross and V'tyai and Taavetti. "It's for the safety of everyone involved."

Movement in the sand and the upheaval of it's siblings sent the Strawberry Wine skittering closer to the Candidates. The eager young dragon within trembled, audible squeaks coming from inside the hard shell. It jerked in place near to Joscelin, red and bright on the Sands. Sure, people bled in some places but that was alright, the egg didn't mind. It did, after all, match.

M'onk's issues with dragons of color meant jack to the little dragon. The egg crackled in several places before the shell fell away to reveal a very squarely built dragon. It had a barrel chest and thick legs and neck. When it bugled (and it did), the noise resounded through the Sands. The Fruit Crow Hatchling arrived in style: decorative shells at it's feet, a dull pink hide and magenta around its muzzle and wingtips.

Awwwwwright.

User Image

The hatchling preened, licking some of the egg goo from his claws before that oh so important trek among the Candidates started. He bumped his head against Joscelin perhaps a bit harder than required and pounced at Raolan. The pink did not try to bite or claw, simply jumped at, teeth snapping in amusement at the idea of causing some sort of activity.

Dance, puppets, dance! Or something suitably dastardly!

Lin

Lin kept her eyes on the grey hatchling. There might be other eggs rocking, other hatchlings hatching.. shells, eight dozen golds could spring from their shells at once (that seemed a ridiculous thought at the time, but considering what was about to happen..) but still, Lin would not remove her eyes from that thing until it was Impressed or gone!

Then.. Lin blinked. And it was gone. Just like that. She blinked again, starring at the spot where it had been. What just happened? Were hatchings always like this?

She heard the Candidatemaster's roar and jumped (she couldn't help it, she just assumed when he was angry it meant they were in trouble), but a quick glance in the direction he was moving revealed the source of the trouble. Lin might not be clever, but she was quick; she didn't miss the crossbow in the rider's hand, or its implications. So that's what happened to the little grey. Poor thing. Even if it was a crazy murderous beast. She felt tears pricking at her eyes, but pushed them back. This is exactly what she'd promised she wouldn't let happen that day when the gold died. Her dark eyes shifted to the scuffle that seemed to be happening between the two riders. And poor V'tyai, who had always been fighting for them. If she ever impressed a dragon.. if she ever got rid of that red jumpsuit and became someone important.. Then, maybe, she could pay him back.

But for now, her attention was called somewhere else. Lin might have missed the flash of golden hide before, but when the egg exploded, no one could miss that. Lin turned to look at the gold and watched it going up to the injured girl. Before she realized what she was doing, her hands were clasped in front of her as she held her breath in anticipation. Would it stay with the girl? It wouldn't -couldn't- hurt the poor girl again, could it? she thought. But taking note of herself, Lin quickly unclasped her hands and replaced her smile with a scowl. I mean, like, not that she cared.

To prevent a relapse, Lin crossed her arms firmly in front of her, but before long, her attention was swept away again. A egg she hadn't even noticed before began to rock. "Wow!" Lin breathed in awe as a second golden hide emerged. Two Golds? That had to be rare! "Oh, wow!" Lin repeated, forgetting herself in the moment. Oh! It looked like it was going to impress too. It was walking over to another one of the injured candidates and.. Wait, wasn't that a boy?

That couldn't be right! Lin might not know much about dragons, but golds impressed girls. That much she knew. An old saying came to mind; "Not all that glitters is gold." she muttered to herself. She knew something was fishy here. Two golds in one clutch? This had to be some kind of trick, right?

Oh shards, not her. Rokana groaned as a gold waltzed up to Marue and impressed. The girl would intolerable now, with a schreeching gold at her back. He was sure of it. His surprise only deepened as yet another gold hatched and then impressed on.. On a boy? And now.. And now a pink. What the shards was going on. Someone had to be pulling a joke. Maybe someone slipped something into his tea when he hadn't been looking. That had to be it, it was the only plausible explanation. He did note, with no slight degree of amusement, that the newest hatchling rather acutely matched the shade of M'onk's face. Now that, that was priceless. He winced as the pink dragon sent up a call that made his ears hurt. Seriously. There had been so much screaming through out this entire event that he was fairly sure he would be deaf by the end of it. He watched the newest dragon, occasionally looking up to see what shade M'onk's face had deepened to. It had been a rough start, but at least something amusing had happened.

Jaykkial

If he kills him I'll kill HIM! Atheth snapped her jaws down on the piece of meat offered, red eyes promising death if another bolt was loosed on her siblings. The loss of one brother for his hide color was one too many. Of course the golds had been left alive though Jaykkial was having one of her more stupid moments as she was sure the young man had Impressed one. How, she wasn't sure...but it looked like he had. The pink dragonet was snapping around, though with less malice than the previous mutation had.

Jaykkial didn't have to remind Atheth that she couldn't harm a human, between the two of them there was a subconscious knowledge that they would be able to come up with something. Maybe not death... but Jaykkial was used to skirting the rules while still getting away with exactly what she wanted. Given a moment, they could make the lives of those responsible miserable.

Luka

If she had to Impress to get out of here, a gold wouldn't be that bad. She wouldn't be expected to fight or be a guard or any of that nasty stuff. Instead she'd be desired as a mate, her dragon for breeding babies. Sure if she wanted to leave, a gold wasn't as easy to hide as a smaller dragon, and probably missed a lot more, but she had no desire to stay here. It actually brought a smile to her face as she slowly came out of hiding, not seeing the monstrous little grey thing anywhere. Wouldn't that just burn? If she went back home and told her ex that he could have been with a gold rider and instead he chose some backwoods dimbrained baby maker.

She spared a thought for her own child. She'd received a couple letters, letting her know the girl was healthy and being raised with her sisters children. It was doubtful she'd take the child back if she went home. She had no real desire to be a mother, especially an unmarried one.

The loud bugle drew her attention back to the Sands and she blinked hard, wondering again if she were asleep or crazy. She hadn't paid attention to who the gold's had Impressed, only knowing that it wasn't her. The draconic face presented to her was not gold. Nor Green. Nor any other color of the known spectrum, like the odd grey hatchling before it this bright pink one was making it's way through the Candidates. Luka slipped around a few, putting distance and bodies between herself and it.

Still torn between watching the drama of Warden's so called leaders and the Hatching, Canoake had really lost count on how many eggs had hatched and how many were left.

Especially when she managed to catch a look at M'onk's face. Oh goody, this had to be driving him crazy. A green rider approached the Warden just at the egg that had been rolling about came to a stop and decided to hatch. And it hatched out...

Pink??

And what a lovely shade of pink too! One that she wouldn't mind replicating for some of her clothing designs. In fact, Canoake looked over the almost rose colored hide and darker magenta markings with glee. She knew what she could do. As the green rider had no problems getting in M'onk's face, she could get back at him in her own little Weaver way. Who said pink couldn't be made to look good. On everyone. In the entire Weyr. Who wasn't a prisoner. Pink would be the new black or brown.

Of course, she would have to make it manly for some of the other riders. Maybe if she added in each rider's or wher handler's dragon or beast colors, it could be more appealing. Yes, she nodded to herself. That was a most suitable idea. Silently, she cheered the pink dragon, hoping it would Impress to the manliest, biggest guy out there. One who was gruff and angry looking.

Someone who probably shouldn't have a pink dragon. But who cared so long as it was allowed to live and Impress before C'ross decided to test his aim again. But hopefully with M'onk distracted and super pissed, and the rider still caught up with V'tyai and the wher handler, perhaps the little beast.. He, she? Canoake wasn't sure. But maybe it had a good chance.

And she was sure that she could get a few people to go berry hunting for her.

There was a egg by his feet. What did he do? Joscelin stepped back lightly, looking over the red shell of the Strawberry wine egg, slight bemusement crossing his face. He had not touched this egg so he wasn't sure what sort of hatching laid inside. He hoped it was an decent tempered one since he wasn't going to run away. It would be horribly undignified. Was he suppose to be doing something? Or just wait here till it hatc-

Ooh, there it went. Wait, why by blunt quills and ink sticks was it pink? That wasn't normal or dignified or anything he wanted apart of. He would be a blazing laughing stock if he impressed a PINK dragon. It was sort of cute but he had enough gender indentify issues without tossing a pink dragon on top of them. Thank you, ohh gracious elder sisters for that mess of problem-

Do not touch me! He managed to bite down his shriek of displeasure as the dragon bumped against him, staggering slightly at the over enthusiast head bump. Don't want, don't want... go awwaaay.

It went away? Joscelin swallowed, attempting to collect himself and fiddled with his sleeves, uncomfortable. At least the pink was distracted with someone else now.

[Bereck]

"Nothing good, but there's nothing we can do about it," Bereck murmured in reply to Ralvyn's woozy question. C'ross had shot the hatchling. He could feel Berath raging against the walls of concentration he had put up in his mind; it was only her concern for the remaining hatchlings that stopped her from attacking the brown there and then....

Golds? Bereck didn't look up but he saw a flash of them through Berath's eyes. Two golds in one clutch, sired by a blue and laid by a sickly gold. Two golds and a grey dragon. What was going on here?

"Well you're not going to be running around in a hurry but all of this should heal well," Bereck went on, seeking to reassure the apprentice and sparing a nod to Malta. "Don't you worry though, I can find plenty of work to occupy you while you're in be-"

Gold dragon, right by his elbow. Rainbow eyes. Bereck looked up sharply at Malta but her face didn't show the shock of joy of Impression. And then Ralvyn spoke up.

Why are you talking to me. I'm not a girl.

Bereck looked from the baby dragon to the wounded candidate and back again. Ralvyn definitely was not girl, but he definitely had just Impressed that dragon. The healer allowed himself a few seconds of confused staring before getting back to work. "Just a few moments and we'll have you ready to move to the infirmary.... I'll see to it that meat is brought for your dragon too." He had no idea how or why this had happened but the fact that it had was indisputable and there was no point wasting time claiming that it couldn't have happened.

****************

[C'tis]

When the bolt was fired C'tis' eyes widened. As the hatchling - the grey hatchling? - disappeared between a red veil of rage descended over his mind. C'ross had fired the bolt but it was M'onk he who had given the order, and M'onk was going to pay for that with his life right here and now. The dragon had been executed, but this would not be an execution. This was extermination of a vile beast, and it was going to feel good!

Just as the blue rider made to move towards the Warden to snap his skinny old neck like a twig, Malcarreth slammed into his mind. It was almost as if his dragon had physically grabbed hold of him, he couldn't move! kill him and C'ross is next!> C'tis snarled to his dragon, that vicious mental tone just barely manifesting visible in a twitching his lips.

live you damn fool!> Malcarreth growled back. restrain yourself C'tis I will do it for you.>

kill him Malcarreth if it's the last thing I do!>

<...>

Malcarreth was right. The rage bubbled back at least enough for him to get a grip on it, and as he did so he felt Malcarreth release his grip on his mind. C'tis blinked, shook himself, raised a hand briefly to his head as he became aware of the rest of the world again in a great rush of sensations. It seemed that he had missed a great deal, there were two breeders down on the sands freshly Impressed by the look of it and a....

Oh, and M'ska was here being Polite at M'onk. C'tis wished he could have mustered the ability to speak, but right now he didn't trust himself. It was as Malcarreth said, they had to wait, but sooner or later M'onk's time would come and when it did he was going to enjoy it.
