Wrathful Shapeshifter

That was all, no she had missed on. Mari gave a soft sound, looking over the egg in question and approached it. White and red and seeming to burn and when she reached and touched it, the shell seemed to bite. Angry, angry little baby. Hostile like the feral canines and vermin and generally unpleasant. SHe pulled back, humph and walked off, head high and skirt swirling around her feet.

Cary was instinctively leery of anything that was too bright or shiny or cheerful looking. It clashed with her badass image. She wasn't about to touch that shiny looking egg. Something that shiny was obviously trying too hard.

Instead she moved to the deep purple Regal Egg. She liked purple. It was a difficult color to dye clothes and she would never have gone to the trouble, but she liked purple. It looked good with black. Not that she wore black clothes, either. Her black clothes had mostly turned grey with age and abuse.

She touched her knuckles to the egg's shell and gasped at the sensation. She had never actually felt anything like that before. Not...firsthand. She only had the faintest inkling from being in the Weyr during several queen flights. It was...really amazing. If there hadn't been other candidates present, she probably would have lingered a long time. Instead she bit her bottom lip to keep silent and forced herself to step back.

Jennes headed for the last egg, one that was pink and blue with markings in pale green. It was certainly the egg with the most detailed markings, and the largest at that. He rested a hand on its shell of the Effervescent Egg. Immediately he was engulfed in a rush of excitement and confidence. This egg seemed quite happy with itself, that was certain. He smiled at the egg before withdrawing.

And that was the end of the touching for him. He bowed to the distant queen again before exiting the sands.

Tacelon filed into the Hatching Grounds with the rest of the Candidates. He hadn't been at the Weyr long, but something seemed odd to him about this clutch. Everything about it seemed, hushed, furtive. Like if he made one misstep he'd get caught...at what? Doing what he was told? It made no sense. But that was how it was, so he had to live with it. He just kept his head down and went to the Hatching Grounds when instructed.

There was another oddity when he got there: the queen was as far away from the clutch as she could get. Weren't golds typically protective of their clutches? He was distracted from these thoughts by the instructions they were being given. Thankfully he'd instructed Clarion to stay back at the barracks, and he was always quiet and respectful. He bowed to the queen and headed for the eggs.

He started to head for the egg in front, but noticed it was the largest and hesitated. Larger eggs meant the larger colors of dragons, like browns and bronzes. One of those certainly wouldn't want him. But they had been instructed to touch all the eggs, so he slowly went up to brush his fingers against the shell of the Effervescent Egg.

Immediately there was a burst of feeling, so strong it almost made him stagger and certainly made his eyes widen. He hadn't known eggs would do that! Well, he'd heard you could generally feel something from the eggs, but the force and energy of it surprised him. This egg was so confident, so excited. He hadn't felt those feelings in a long time. Well, excited a little bit when he'd Impressed Clarion, but with nowhere near this force. The egg seemed to want to show him something (how, he had no idea), but he couldn't take it any more. He dropped his hand away and stared at the egg woodenly for a moment. He tried to sort though his feelings about it, and eventually arrived at: how could an egg have more self-confidence then me? Then he turned and trudged on to another egg.

Cary cast a last glance at the Regal Egg before moving to her right to touch her fingertips to the primarily white shell of the Glowering Egg. She had not observed the malevolent redness beneath the otherwise mundane egg, and so when she felt that initial snarl of anger she was unprepared. Not that she would have expected the egg to be angry based on a red underside any more than she would have expected the purple one to feel so...sensual. Faced with the egg's bestial rage Cary fell back on her old habit of feigning indifference until she felt it, but she also stepped back. Whatever. She felt sorry for the candidate who Impressed that raging hellbeast, and certain it wouldn't be her. Screw that.

This was it. She'd been anticipating this one event since she'd arrived at the Weyr. Granted, Aislyn really should've been looking forward to the hatching, but with the possibility of maulings this event seemed a bit better. The red head shifted eagerly as she went over the rules in her head. Bow to the golden mother, be very very careful around the eggs, and don't do anything stupid. Sounded easy enough. There was no way she had any plans on getting the Queen angry at her for anything. Nothing good came out of getting any gold angry.

Her full attention then shifted to the eggs with a curiosity that came from a first timer. What would they feel like? Smooth, rough, warm to the touch? The red head was pulled from her thoughts by the other candidates as they headed towards the eggs. Oh, so just head on out and touch the eggs? Lovely! Grinning faintly, the girl made her way onto the sands only to be surprised at just how hot they actually were. Shards, they were expected to wear these flimsy sandals out here? It was hot! Stifling a groan, the girl pushed such thoughts away as being the price of getting a chance of Impressing.

It was these thoughts that drew her gaze towards the eggs. They were so pretty! Chewing on her lip, she watched a few of the other candidates head off towards the eggs. Which one should she pick? Oh wait, couldn't forget! Pausing, she made sure to give a bow to the distant gold. When she straightened, Aislyn tilted her head and eyed the mother of the clutch. Now why would she be so far away? Did all the mothers keep such a distance from their eggs? Oh, no need to question that the eggs were the reasons she was here in the first place.

Making sure to be extra careful as she made her way around the eggs, she finally came to a stop right in front of the Glowering Egg. It was a bit like it's mother and was keeping away from the rest of the eggs. Poor thing. A hand reached out to press against the egg only to have her eyebrows almost shoot straight off her face. This egg was angry! Or at least it was, as soon as it seemed to register her touch it seemed to calm down slightly. Well, that was interesting. Were all the eggs like this? What had this egg so angry though? Her fingertips stroked the shell, slightly amazed at the touch. "Try to behave, hm? Getting into trouble so early wouldn't be much fun." Grinning, she gave a final pat before turning to head to the next egg. This was actually turning out to be very interesting.

Ovate Egg was the next in her visitation line. While not as attention pulling as it's siblings, it was close to Aislyn's starting point and she would have to touch all the eggs. Almost eager to see what this egg was like, she placed her palm against the plain shell and waited. After several moments, she raised an eyebrow. Well, it didn't seem like it was going to give any kind of response. Which was somewhat disappointing after the first exciting egg reaction. Hmm. Was it sleeping? Could be, or maybe it just didn't want to have anything to do with her. Oh well. Wishing it luck, she moved on to the next egg.

Only three eggs remained that needed her attention and Quindrife was dead set on finishing up as quickly as possible, there was reason to linger, if she failed to Impress it would only make things worse if she remembered exactly how exquisite it felt to have the heat of the shell beneath her palm and be denied the wonderful beast that lurked within. How many hatchings had she attended, how many friends had she lost to the social ladder climb, how much weight had she lost from sorrow? She wasn’t even certain anymore and the longer she lingered upon the thoughts that clouded her mind the less excited she was to be in the exact spot that she stood upon.

Flinging her forearm across her brow Quindrife all but threw the sweat from her forehead as she stepped up to the next egg in line giving it a rather scrutinizing leer. The Shiny surface of the hardening ovum was reminiscent of slick whetstone, there was a smooth glossy quality to its shell almost reflective in a way, among the last three eggs the little shimmering one was the most attractive physically of the trio and because that fact Quindrife wanted to get the formalities over with as soon as possible.

“Smug aren’t you, I figured as much.” The hoarse whispers pulled at the base of the girl’s throat making her voice scratchy and dully ache. Quindrife didn’t take kindly to being judged and the enigmatic blank screen that the little dragonet pushed between itself after weighting her like a prized ham made the stiff candidate wince away from the glimmering shell. It wasn’t revealing what it thought of her, it probably didn’t care, honestly it was a very unsettling feeling that she didn’t like whatsoever. Huffing loudly the tall brunette back-peddled from the glossy, inviting shell and turned towards its sibling that held a less appealing hue to its exterior.

It was plain, dark, small, and the most wonderful one out of the batch as far as she was concerned. Whatever was within stared deeply into the very mortal fabric that made her who she was and said nothing, it wasn’t judging but it was also curious about her, craving to know exactly what its flashy clutchmate thought of her for some unknown reason. Calloused thumbs brushed over the smooth, lackluster surface of the brownish egg affectionately, no matter how much she tried every hatching she had a favorite and every hatching a new heartbreak, this one would be no different. Biting her bottom lip Quindrife pulled away from the little Murky egg, she didn’t need to say anything to the un-born dragonet for it to know exactly how she felt.

Suckling down a deep breath between barely parted lips the slightly dazed candidate swaggered off towards large crown jewel of the Touching ceremony. Noble shades of heather greeted the embarrassingly tall brown-haired girl, if she had been the one to choose her own path she almost could have sworn that the Regal egg had summoned her presents. The majesty wished for an audience with such a lowly creature, how could she refuse such an honor? Taking her stance in front of the deep purple shelled dragonet Quindrife readied herself for whatever the little one inside was going to force upon her.

Pinpricks of chills raced along hot leather confined flesh, every inch, every fiber of her being awoke with the most explosive of carnal needs. Gasping sharply the muscular teenager leaned into the firm resistance that the egg providing against her touch, whatever color the little creature was that stirred underneath her palm knew exactly how to make a girl feel good, so good that she ached all over and trembled visibly. The sensation wasn’t exactly one that Quindrife had been expecting and the way her nipples went rigid under the heavy layers of clothing that she wore proved that fact. Mental images flashed in her head of various female candidates, Emora, Mari, Aislyn, Seikih and others all exposed and revealing themselves to her willingly. It was too much! Far too much for Quindrife’s nerves to handle thinking about such things much less having her body betray her at the simple whim of a purple confined dragonet. Staggering backwards with giant uneasy steps the lumbering brunette sank into the hot sands upon her knees, lifting her hands to her mouth Quindrife covered her quivering lips as her stomach lurched upwards into her throat and threatened to spill the contents of her breakfast onto the hot grit of the hatching grounds.

Disgusting! How could the dragonet be so cruel as to remind her of how utterly disgusting she was?

Heaving loudly Quindrife forced herself back onto her feet while choking down the bile that continued to rise up her insides, giving a bow towards the Queen Gold as best and as quickly as she could manage. Scrambling off the sands in the most unbecoming of manners the towering brunette disappeared from sight before retching into the shadows away from prying eyes but not out of earshot.

Cary was only interested in touching the Ovate Egg at this point, but it looked so boring and the other candidates' reactions to it had been so blah that she really felt no particular urge to do so. Instead she returned to the wall right beside the entryway and surveyed the clutch for another moment or two, watching as an impressively tall brunette left the sands in a distressed hurry. Cary took that as her cue to leave, too, and followed Quindrife out. Perhaps when she wasn't tearful Cary would seek her out and see what about the Regal Egg had upset her so badly.

Tacelon headed for another of the eggs at random, ending up by the yellow Shiny Egg. He barely looked at it though, just put a hand on the shell, hoping whatever he felt from it would distract him from his thoughts about the first egg. The feeling was much less blatant, and hard to describe at first. After a moment he decided it was watching him, looking him over somehow, like a Master who was evaluating his performance. He felt the urge to stand straighter and try harder at...something. What was it judging him on? When he noticed that this egg wanted to be closer to the big one, he immediately dismissed the thought. Forget the big egg, not worth thinking about. He slipped his hand off the shell and moved on.

Next he went to a dark-colored egg nearby. When he rested his hand on the Murky Egg, he felt as if someone were looking at him very sharply. He hunched his shoulders at the indignant edge of it, then noticed the inquisitive part of it. It was curious...but not about him, specifically. About what the yellow egg thought of him? How should he know? The dragons could compare notes when they hatched, perhaps.

He turned away from that egg to head for the next-closest one, then noticed another Candidate leave in a hurry after touching it, followed by a retching sound from outside. He was really hesitant to touch the egg now, and stared at it with some trepidation. But they had been told to touch all the eggs, and there weren't that many...slowly he reached out his fingers to brush against the Regal Egg. The rush of an inexplicably good sensation was not at all what he'd expected. He was frozen there for a moment, enjoying the unfamiliar feeling. The reactions of the other eggs were pushed out of the forefront of his mind for a moment, letting him relax slightly. He couldn't stay here forever though, so he gave the egg a small pat and moved on.

Moving to the next egg didn't take but a few footsteps to reach the egg that seemed to be holding the Ovate egg up. Tropical Egg was certainly colorful and bright, pulling a small smile onto her lips. Wasn't this a pretty shell? Whistling quietly to herself, she reached out and brushed her fingers against the shell. Once again marveling at the fact that she was here and touching actual dragon eggs. Pressing her palm down gently, she cocked her head at what she felt. This one seemed to think she should have something for it. Should she have brought a gift for the little ones? At least that was this one's thought. And how disappointed was it that she had nothing for him. "Well, you'll be able to get something the next time we're here. Okay?" Smirking slightly, she gave a very gentle pat before dropping her hand back to her side and turning away.

Effervescent Egg was almost as colorful as the Tropical egg, but in a more...girly way. Not that it meant anything; like the dragon inside being of the female persuasion. But interesting to look at anyways. She smirked faintly and circled the egg, taking in the unique coloring. Very nice. Stopping, the red-head put a hand to the shell and had to quickly stifle a bit of laughter. As much as it looked girly on the outside, this one had to be a male on the inside. She had yet to meet the female who could boast this much. It also seemed to want her to wait and watch it, as if it would end up doing something awesome. Really? Arching an eyebrow, she had to keep a straight face as she pulled away. "Can't wait to see you hatch. I'm sure it'll end up being a blast." Chuckling quietly to herself, she gave a final goodbye before heading to the next egg.

The most attention getting egg was next in line for Aislyn, because who could resist an egg that seemed to shine so brightly. Once her hand was against it, however, she had a small frown. Was this egg judging her? On if she'd be a good partner for the one inside, or just her in general? It didn't seem to want to give up what it's conclusion was, but jeez. She wasn't sure if she liked it or not. Well that was enough of the Shiny Egg, if she stayed much longer her curiosity on what the egg had decided would get to her.

Tacelon headed next for a egg that seemed white at first, until he noticed a red tint to its underside. He was wondering at the curious coloration as he placed his hand on the Glowering Egg. The immediate feeling was of some violent beast lying in wait, like a chained watchwher lurking in its kennel and watching for anyone to some near. An instant after his hand touched the shell, the feeling started to surge forward, like the watchwher lunging out, but it quickly checked itself. It paused as if considering him before drawing back into itself and leaving him be. It seemed to have an ill will towards something, but it wasn't him. Deciding that was probably a better reaction than being snubbed like another egg he could think of, he let the angry egg be and moved on.

There were only a couple eggs left, one plain and one bright. He went for the bright one first and reached out for the Tropical Egg's shell. This egg seemed to be looking not at him but his hand, and was disappointed that it didn't have something. What could it possibly want? It was an egg, nothing he could be holding would make any positive difference to it. Shouldn't it be paying attention to the Candidates and not whatever they may or may not be holding?

He left that egg be and turned to put a hand on the last egg, the Ovate Egg. He half expected this egg to be unfavorably judging him too, like so many of the eggs had. But this one gave him no feeling at all, not at first and not after staying there for several moments. It was like touching a rock. Was there even a dragon in there? He was trying to decide if being completely ignored was better or worse than being snubbed as he took his hand away.

Well, that was all the eggs. Judging by the reactions, Tacelon didn't think it was likely that any of those dragons might want him. So he just trudged out of the Hatching Grounds to get back to his work for the day.

At the far end of the cavern the queen stood up abruptly with a sound of distress. Her eyes, too, swirled in the colors of anger and worry all at once. She began to pace in obvious agitation, completely ignoring the candidates standing near her eggs. They weren't close enough to her to be in any danger and they certainly were of secondary importance to her at the moment.

Alaia hurried onto the sands and placed herself in the distance between the eggs and their mother. Given that this was not her dragon, it undoubtedly took a great deal of courage to do this, even knowing that adult dragons do not knowingly injure human beings. In her most firm, no-nonsense voice she scolded the queen: "Serith! Stop that!"

Her scolding didn't have much of an obvious effect, but the dragon didn't seem inclined to move toward her eggs anyway, and so to the candidates Alaia said, "Carry on. She'll not hurt you."

When Jadros heard the queen start to make a fuss, his initial reaction was ‘oh no, it’s because of me, isn’t it?’ But, upon snapping his head in the direction of the large gold, he realized that it likely had nothing to do with him, or indeed any of the other candidates, at all. It looked like she was distressed about something, certainly, but she wasn’t looking over at her eggs. She didn’t seem to be concerned about them, or the younglings touching them gently in the sands.

That didn’t do much to comfort the mind of the young boy, however, who was worried about what was bothering the dragon. It wasn’t every day he got to see a dragon looking bothered, and he had to admit, he wasn’t the biggest fan of it. Maybe she needed a nice song? Or perhaps a joke or two to brighten the mood?

Or… maybe he should leave her rider to tend to her and not get himself in the way. Still, though he knew his place and that he really should listen and get back to the touching, he couldn’t help but ask a simple question.

“What’s wrong?” He squeaked, his voice louder than he probably would have liked it. It would have been fine if his question had passed unnoticed, but speaking from the diaphragm was something second nature to him, projecting his voice even when he would rather be seen and not heard. Damn his natural tendency to be loud.

Clearly his throat, he looked back at the eggs. Regardless of whether or not he got his question answered, he knew he still had a lot of work ahead of him. There were still plenty of eggs for him to interact with and get a sense for. And some of the other candidates had finished already! Meh. Nothing to worry about- it wasn’t a race. He was happy they had gotten to feel each and every egg, and he couldn’t wait to delight in the memories with them later.

Just had to make sure he had the memories to share.

Auri came to the Hatching Sands confused about what was going on. This didn't seem like the normal Hatching she had been told about, but hey, there were dragon eggs here!

Auri waited impatiently for her turn to touch them.

"What's taking so long I want a turn..." she mumbled to herself.

She could see Dagner up at the clutch. He was making a stupid face while touching the purple one. "Idiot."

Soon it was Her turn. She bowed to Serith and approached the clutch.

She started with the bright orange-ish one, the Tropical Egg. Auri closed her eyes and placed her palm on the egg. The egg seemed to want something from her, but what? Who was this eggs to demand something from her, surely this egg hadn't done anything for her to warrant such a request.

"Maybe if you bring something for me first." She stated to the colorful shell. She pat it gently and moved to the next one.

When Dagner heard queen sound off, he turned - and noticed someone very familiar on the sands.

"Auri." He snorted.

"Someone doesn't like you," he called flippantly, gesturing to the queen.
