Oh.
Oh. Yeah, that was a pretty good point. But a pretty good point they didn't have time to factor in. Not when they were so close. "You're right," Elcca said in a hurried whisper. "If you can step on stones, step on them. But its too late now, we'll just have to hope it will be morning by the time they notice them."
Always one to overdo things, Elcca quickly took to trying to hop-foot onto Morag's footprints. But it was still dark, and her attempts were haphazard at best. Maybe they'd think a giant lion roamed around here in the dark, fueling ghost stories for years to come.
That might have been more wishful thinking on her part.
Quiet as a whisper, she felt the sudden beat of wings ahead of them. Yoan was circling, watching the movements of the guards as they still searched for the sounds that had distracted them. "They are otherwise occupied," he reported. "But we've got other problems."
"What kind of other problems?" Elcca angrily whispered through clenched teeth.
"Looks like the guards have been pushing stones to fortify the pass. You'll have to scale it."
Sure enough, as they rounded the corner the way was blocked by a meager avalanche. Judging by the claw marks on some of the stones, it hadn't been a natural one. It would be no problem at all for the otherwise able bodied group to climb over, but the stones might be a problem if they fell and made noise...
I hope you like climbing!
arrow Each lion crossing the 'wall', roll 1-10.
It takes 5 points to scale the wall Landing 3 and below causes a stone to fall!
More than three stones will alert the guards!

Mkazo's ears pinned back, almost disappearing into his thick mane. A false guard patrol? What if a real threat arose while someone was here pretending? A soldier or two was one thing--their role wasn't that far off from a guard's--but a pair of hunters could be in pretty shitty shape if the Nergui also wanted through the border tonight. Tense muscles relaxed a fraction as the idea was dismissed and his...altered? Not bad--using one of the birds as a distraction wasn't all that much different than what some of the more slave-hoarding lions back in the mountains had done. He flashed Serkan a look that might have held a hint of approval. In the dark, it was hard to tell, and that was just fine with him.
He was about to note the two he could glimpse at the guard post, but the loud screech of one of the birds made it unneccessary. The guards went to investigate, and Mkazo took off. He kept pace with the group, paws digging into the sand slightly with each stride. He remained silent--talking could wait until they were well out of earshot.
The wall was...a complication. But it wouldn't stop him--he'd done his fair share of climbing on rocks in the mountains. He barely paused to gather himself before leaping up, crossing with the occasional faint scrape of claw on stone.

Serkan scowled at the wall, finding it more than just an annoyance and far more than irritating. It down-right pissed him off to be this close and find a wall in his way. Another blockade between him and knowing if Pele was okay, how many of his children still lived, and many other things. The red lion paced for a moment while others moved, before he finally moved, starting a careful climb up the wall. The red, white, and black male soon made it to the top, happy to find no rocks fallen. He shifted around, reaching a paw down in offering to anybody who might need help up. He'd seen the way at least Elcca moved. If they were all making this trek together, they'd need everybody present, not have the group dwindle down because someone got left behind at the wall. As he leaned, he ended up slipping right back down, thankfully landing not only on his paws but not knocking any rocks down. A frustrated growl sat low in his throat as he glared at the confounding wall.

Morag paused in her dash, giving the wall a look over. A complication, but if they were careful, they could make it.
Gathering herself, the dark lioness leaped as high as she could, paws outstretched to catch herself and scramble up the rock pile. She managed a formidable distance, but there was a bit of misjudgement in the landing and she slipped, sliding back down the pile with a grimace of annoyance and the crash of a stone falling with her.
Damn it!
Backing up, she eyed the wall again, looking side to side to see how the others fared before she tried again. This ascent was trickier than it looked, and with her perception thrown off by the sightless eye, it might prove more than she was capable of before the guards were upon them.

Elcca lingered only a moment, watching Yoan drift overhead and past the wall. Maybe there was some benefit to his predicament after all. He didn't have to deal with this nonsense at least. She took a quick glance behind her to watch the rest of the group approach before starting up the incline herself.
Just as she'd feared, the stones were loose. At least one had already clattered to the ground below. Better get moving.
Luckily, while Elcca might not have been much of a fighter, she was a small lioness. Her weight let her scale the lose stones with ease. She paused occasionally though just to be sure she wasn't getting ahead of herself. She could be a bit brazen, but at least she knew when to reign it in.
Once she reached the top, she quickly made a few short downward hops to the bottom. She hadn't dethroned any stones, but the landing could have been better. A lace of pain sliced up her paw as she landed on the old wound. It was about all she could do to simply hiss out a rough owch, and dart to the shadows behind the others.

The avalanche was good and bad news. They wouldn't leave tracks on the stones, but...he winced as one crashed down under another's paws. That was the downside. They could be LOUD. Well, nothing for it...up he went...And over, with ease. Whew. He breathed a sigh of relief, and turned to watch the others. "Almost there, come on..." He quietly encouraged. "Step gently, but quickly. No footprints here. But no more falling rocks, okay?" He felt himself ready to bolt once they were all over the barricade.

A rock catches right upon a scar, causing the dark lion to wince as he grasped for a grip. Eyes close and ears pinned as he heard the faint tumbling of pebbles give away beneath his feet. He cursed himself. It would appear, though he had crossed these mountains once before, it had a grudge for letting him pass through. With a growl under breath, as he stood against the wall and back to those who remained with him. If things continued as they were, surely someone would have heard them.
The dark Hongshan paced silently as he looked up at the wall, he would surely try again, but for now, the pain running through his paws needed to subside first.

Aithne was very surprised by the sound of the bird. She wasn't expecting something that long but as it started to scream and make a ton of noise but as she watched the two guards rise to their feet it made her feel better. She watched as they wandered and before she could start moving the body of a snake caught her eye. Her attention turned toward the black serpent and as the others started to wander she followed the snake. Part of her felt it was necessary to keep an eye on the snake to make sure it was safe. She wasn't even that sure why she felt like she needed to keep an eye on her but she felt like she needed to anyway.
At the comment about the foot prints she rolled her eyes. She was so used to the lands and she really knew better about that. "The sands of the desert are never settled. They are always moving by any touch, they won't last long." She said simply. The sands would heavy and would collapse over themselves in no time. She wasn't that worried.
she slowed however at the wall that was in front of her. She had no clue what was up with this but as she watched the others start to get over it she knew what she must do herself. She backed up keeping a little distance from the others. She knew that she too had to be careful along with everyone else and she was excited to see what would happen. She moved as quickly as she could before pushing herself off of the ground and over the land trying to hold her footing as she landed.

Watching the others, Serkan paced, contemplating the problem. After a moment, he let out a huff, looking over his shoulder. The guards would be back soon... Even if they didn't make more noise. The distraction wouldn't hold forever. Finally, he turned to Morag. "I forget name, but climb on back..." He went over to the wall, standing next to it and crouching slightly. "Might have better time getting up." As long as they all made it up and over, he didn't care if he had to hoist EVERYBODY up. Green eyes turned again towards the path back, watching and listening for guards.

Nyimak had held her breath when the bird had gone out to try to steal the guards away. When his cries actually worked, she couldn't help but feel relief. Moving as quickly as she could, attempting to make as little commotion (or leave as few tracks) as she could, the lioness swiftly followed the group.
It would be smooth sailing from - - -
A wall.
A damned wall of rocks.
Why she wasn't surprised that they were attempting to do what they could to keep others out, it was irritable for now because it further hindered her cause! Still, it was merely a temporary setback. Following the others, she bunched her muscles and made a spring at the wall, hoping that her paws would land true.
Unfortunately, the lioness found her first attempt landing on loose rock. Some rocks crumbled and slipped, and she bit back a snarl. Her ears instantly were alert as she lept back down, glancing behind her, and hoping upon hope she hadn't caught the guards attention.
Damnit.
Her eyes fell upon Thabiti, though now wasn't the time to speak. Instead, she turned to regard the wall. Perhaps if she followed in the tracks of a more successful lion? Either way, she had to hurry.

Mkazo watched silently, tail swishing idly behind him the only sign of any uncertainty that they would make it over the wall undetected. At least, until the first lion failed to make it up the wall. That caused a frown to set in upon his face. Then, a rock fell. His ear twitched at that, and at each rock that followed, as his frown deepened and became positively thunderous. If they kept on like gods-damned bumbling cubs, they'd have the guards on top of them! And since nobody had suggested, 'just walk across since we have a good story to tell them for why we're here' earlier, he had his doubts as to whether there would be any such story to pull out of thin air now.

Tarsa had been doing a patrol sweep when the first screams shouted. They'd startled him, more than he'd like to admit, but he knew a wild animal from a lion. Maybe some rock hopper. Eh, the kind of silliness he was sure Hraga would have under control. Silliness was practically his profession. Tarsa? Tarsa jumped for no one.
But as the rather round male concluded his lingering stroll about the perimeter, the sound of rocks brought that icey feeling back down his spine. This time, for completely different reasons. Had Hraga chased the dying thing across that damn wall they'd been pushing rocks around? That didn't sound like his friend.
He was moving before he even realized he'd decided to confront them on his own. There were jokes around the pride about the big lion's size- but when he wanted to move, he sure could fly. As he passed the guard post, he noticed it vacant with a passing glance. Hraga and Mizuka were gone, hopefully not because he hadn't responded to the first disturbance of the night.
The lion rounded the corner, a threatening snarl ripping from his throat. He was more than ready to face these monster invaders on his lonesome- but just as he was about to plow into the nearest one who had yet to scale the wall, his voice cut short and he staggered to a stop. It was an invasion! It was-
...a bunch of people he knew. He recognized Nyimak and Morag immediately. He was out of breath. "What- what the hell are you guys doing?"
Uh oh, busted! Think quick! Do we lie, or do we tell the truth? Someone better try to explain this fast!
--
From the other side of the wall, Elcca made a face. Ugh! They'd been discovered! That meant she had to climb back up the damn thing, didn't it? Hopefully the others would have the situation under control!

Thinking on his paws, Serkan rose back up from where he'd been crouching, slowly approaching the other lion. "Appologies, ah... I forget name." So many names... He really HAD forgotten a chunk of names. "We out hunting, some get practice in... Found REALLY good prey, but go this way, we chase. Thought night hunting be good practice, prove frustrating." He looked up toward the guard post, expression confusion in his face. "Heard animal sounds in distance, see no guards... So figure they go after other thing in dark." His gaze turned back to Tarsa. He'd seen that shade of gold in a few eyes around the pride - In particular, a lot of lions that, as he dimly recalled, were related to an old bag of bones that hug on to life despite his obviously advanced age and lack of physical abilities remaining. Perhaps Tarsa was related to... Well, almost every gold-eyed lion.

"Tarsa!"
Morag swallowed her surprise at suddenly being discovered and turned, shifting closer to the large male, plastering a welcoming smile on her face.
"What are you doing here? Aren't you on patrol at the Northern Outpost?" She glanced back at the others who hadn't made it over the wall, her tail flicking as she hoped they'd catch on too and support the story. "We were chasing down this huge wildebeast when it went up and over this wall... I didn't know there was anything like this out here. Nyimak and the others were helping me hunt tonight, trying to back into the swing of things since my injury, you know?" She shrugged as she rocked on her paws, her shoulders rolling. "I missed my jump when it went over. Caused a bit of commotion when the rocks fell... the stupid thing is probably a mile away by now."

Mkazo barely suppressed a groan, but he did let loose a disgusted sigh as Tarsa's voice rang out. It just had to ******** figure, didn't it? Successfully distract the guards from their post, only to be tripped up by a simple wall. He could hear Serkan talking--it was a good enough story, if Tarsa believed it. If he overlooked the utter lack of sense it would take to hunt in the direction the Nergui came from. Or the fact that prey of any decent size would make a hell of a lot more noise than they'd been, climbing over the rocks. He glanced at Elcca, face twisting in a grimace. Even if the story slid, it didn't mean the rest of them were getting over. They could all just be ordered home.
