Sesina. She's dead.

"Yeah," Aleck confirmed after a pause. "Yeah, they did. I'm sorr-" He blinked when Bereck started on about needlethorns, switching to a different topic entirely.. topic? No, time. And while Becka sobbed relief and played along, Aleck wasn't quite as heartened. The state of his father's mind was as important as that of his body - maybe more, if Bereck had anything to say about it. "I patched Berr, Dad," she said quietly, in a bid to bring him back to reality. "She-"

Another person!

Just one again, a girl as freckled as she was domineering, and Aleck quickly registered the knots on her shoulder. Another apprentice. Where was everyone? Journeymen, riders - even 'handlers? This girl seemed to be trying to make up for their absence by sheer force of personality though, and the brunet's brow furrowed slightly as interactions began in a less than harmonious manner. Loyalties seemed sorted out at least.

"Master Healer Bereck's dragon sent the message. She's guarding the dragon side. Bereck is here." Keeping his eyes on Cai, he indicated the wounded man on the bloody bed. "I'm his son, Aleck. He gave us instructions."

It was rare for the weyrbrat to use his father's full title or make a claim of allegiance more formal than 'Oh yeah, he's my dad.' But this was his Weyr, and his father, and if that wasn't enough to feel legitimately responsible in the absence of rankers then so be it. He'd stopped qualifying as a child some turns ago, now being fully twenty and six feet tall, but he would've felt more authoritative if he was wearing a proper shirt. Oh well. Aleck adjusted his glasses and kept his tone calm and serious. Bedamned if brewing bickering was going to compromise Bereck.

"Right now he needs to be moved to another bed. We could use your help, Cai."

Cai's eyes lit up and bright flares of red spotted her heavily freckled cheeks. She'd been all for her weyr relaxing some of their long held traditions and accepting the ideas held by these new weyrs but judging by her encounters here maybe her elders had been right. Rochelle was first to be dealt with. She smiled back at the glasscrafter. Hers was less bright and more condescending. "I don't think you need to worry about me. I appear to have found the creche just fine on my own." Her smile faded into a hard glare as she quietly hissed. "As for you; you'll count yourself lucky if your children are still alive and not wher chow right now."

She lifted her voice back to a normal level. "I had no idea the people of Malvren were so insufferably rude! It's no wonder your Weyr's at odds with everyone else if this is how you treat strangers. Particularly one brought here against her will! Now I HAD come here to help you ungrateful arses but I can just as easily take myself right back out there!" She flung her arm to the door. "I'm sure there are PLENTY of folk who don't care about the age, gender or origins of the hands that tend them!"

She paused, glancing at Aleck as he gave her the answers she'd asked for, even if they weren't the ones she wanted to hear. Weyrhealer's dragon? Oh Shards. She took a solid look at the man laying before the smart mouthed girl. That was the Weyrhealer...Oh Shards. Her demeanor calmed and she turned away from Carltis and Rochelle, shooting them a scathing glare as she brushed past to Aleck's side. "I know my duties as a healer. Tell me where you need me." She spoke calmly to Aleck, he at least had earned a fraction of her respect for now.

Becka sighed and rubbed her face, Aleck was right... they needed her help despite how prickly Cai was, "Look i'm sorry... it's been..a very....bad day for everyone... we're all a little highly strung" she said, running her hands over her head before letting them drop. While she had similar concerns about Bereck's mental state, his physical state was what mattered right now and unless they moved him from the wet, sticky bedding that he was laying on he could get a very bad infection. "Keep him as still as possible, and move him to a clean cot, i'll need to change those stained bandages when he's moved too" she said, more to herself that to the other Apprentice Healer. "Cartlis!" she called "Come and give us a hand?" she asked him "The more people moving, the smoother it will go and the safer it will be for him" she explained to Aleck. "Master Bereck, we're going to move you now, it might hurt but i've put as much numbweed on as i can, and you know i can't give you Fellis right now" she said to him, if he was awake enough to hear her, he'd want to know what she was doing. He'd give her hell if she let patients know what was happening to them, that's for sure, even if the patient was himself.

[Carltis]

Heh. Now he remembered why he had sometimes liked Rochelle. What she'd said wasn't strictly true, but he was damned if he was going to contradict her in front of this interloper. He was, however, preparing to say something really nasty when Aleck cut in.

He scowled, not at Aleck, just scowled in general; it was something of a default expression and he'd probably have lines on his face from it by the time he was thirty.

Right, okay, moving Bereck; practical stuff, not getting pissy with the pissy Benden girl especially as she seemed to be calming down anyway; he coiled his whip back up in a very deliberate manner and tied it to his belt once more.

"Right," he nodded at Becka, "you do the directing then, keep us all going in the same direction and that."

**************

[Bereck]

...Berath was hurt?

He tried to reach her again, and this time managed some fuzzy communication. She wasn't in much pain now, but she was afraid. For him. Guarding the dragon side. Whers. Yes. People trying to take his Weyr....

Apparently he'd given people instructions. He didn't remember doing that. Well, good for him in any case he supposed....

His eyes had drifted closed again; he opened them. "What?... Oh. Moving. Right. Get on with it then." Claws, ripping his flesh like nothing more than gossamer. Fangs sinking deep into his leg. He closed his eyes again - deliberately this time - and waited, trying to keep his grip on the situation. He must have lost a great deal of blood. He would be confused. Loss of consciousness common, should keep awake as much as he could. Easier thought than done.

That was more like it. She'd probably stick around Aleck for now as he seemed to be the one people here listened to. She herself wasn't sure of his position but if he was the Weyrhealer's son then she could assume he knew at least some of his father's craft. "Apology accepted." She moved around to Bereck's other side, pushing the edges of her sleeves up to her elbows. "Master, I'm Cai. I'm going to be helping. Don't be alarmed." His speech was choppy. That wasn't a good sign. She jently placed her hands on his side. Even if her personality was tougher than a wher's hide, she was never deliberately rough with a patient.

"Once he's settled. I'd like to go see his dragon." His incoherence could be caused by something wrong with his dragon, though from the amount of blood everywhere, she somewhat doubted it. Still, the problems of one affected the other.

Becka nodded when they were ready to lift, in acknowledgement of her aplogy being accepted, shards she'd hoped for another healer and when one had arrived she'd snapped at her.... today.. was not a good day for the apprentice Healer. "That would be great Cai, Aleck did his best but he's not a healer and i haven't had time to go and check on her, she seemed .....tired, when i came in but that could have been reflected off master Bereck" she said, "There's been no one but me to do all of this, when you're done with Berath, could you check my work?" she asked the other girl "I know you're only an apprentice too but it never hurts" she added.

Aleck did what he usually did with rising conflict: he avoided it. He was going to ignore the barbed remarks coming from Rochelle and Cai, not wade in with the foolish notion of fixing things. You picked your battles. Most of the time. "Thank you," he told Cai quietly as she came alongside him; it could've been for coming to help or for halting the snappy comments, but he meant it.

The young man frowned faintly at the notion of sitting the healer up. "He's got wounds in back. And he got kind of.. tossed around." He couldn't finish the sentence without his gaze flickering away. "We could lift him onto a stretcher and carry it to another bed. Carltis and-" glass baubles and worried blue eyes- Rochelle, her name's "-Rochelle, you're the strongest. Take his shoulders and feet? And Becka and Cai, if you hold up the middle, we can keep him straight." Lacerations were one thing but he'd seen that wher toss him away like a rag doll before he could turn its attention, and who knew what that might've done to his spine. He felt inclined to be methodically cautious. He raised blue eyes to Cai and looked at her over the top of his glasses. "And if you could look at Berath after this, I'd appreciate it. I'll get a stretcher." Aleck gave the healer's hand a squeeze before he reluctantly loosed it and headed for the main room.

Not long after he returned, carrying a pole and canvas contraption under his good arm like a malnourished battering ram, which he laid down next to the bed.

[Rochelle]

She sneered, full lips pulled back. Before Rochelle could get out a word to the little nit of a Healer, th freckled girl already changed her direction, past the Glasscrafter without even allowing Roche the scant second to say anything back.

Rude Benden-- Rochelle muttered a few choice words, eyes narrowed into dark daggers at the Healers back. Being only 5'7" meant she could sometimes be mistaken for a kid but even under her rather gross work tunic, voluptuous curves could only be hidden so much. Another curve of her lips, a grumble, but Roche kept from snarling at her. She looked instead to Carltis.

"Someone pulled her Flouncing Panties on for the wherhandlers today," She shifted from her injured foot to the other, uncomfortable again when the dull thud of pain reminded her that, haha, blowtorches falling had the tendency to hurt. The cozy healer group cuddled around, adorable and bloody and-- Wait. "Shards."

Huge awkward marks, right. Aleck spoke to her, the same calm young man she'd been something like friends with four turns back. Him remembering her name surprised her more than the fact the skinny short nerd exploded into a skinny tall nerd. Her eyebrows arched but, he asked. Bereck had been kind o her, when her Teacher became ill. Aleck spoke with her when her father figure lay dying and ill; time to return the favor.

"...C'mon, wherwrestler," One last glance at Carltis and Rochelle headed to Bereck. She ignored the Healers, crouching by Bereck's legs. Hells, she ignored Bereck himself; this man in front of her was not the healer that tended to Rocham or had those bright bright eyes. Not even a little. Rochelle stared down at his feet instead of his face, looking up only when Aleck came back. "Surprised you remembered me."

She talked when dealing with things like guys in sickbeds. Coping mechanism, it's a thing.

[Bereck]

"Mmmh...." He didn't know anyone called Cai did he? He opened his eyes and tried to focus on her. Hmm. She'd just introduced herself so maybe not. "Right."

Kind of tossed around. "Understatement'v th'turn," he mumbled vaguely, closing his eyes again.

Abruptly he realised that Aleck wasn't holding his hand anymore and opened his eyes again, a jolt of panic shooting through him; how long had he been gone? "Aleck?" Oh, there he was, putting something down by the bed. "Don't wander off like that," Bereck mumbled, a frown lining his face as a reflexive reprimand floated to the forefront of his mind which concluded with; "You'll get lost."

...Did somebody just call him wherwrestler? He wasn't entirely sure what he thought of that nickname, but there were a lot of things he wasn't entirely sure of at the moment so he supposed that wasn't a surprise.

***************

[Carltis]

Flouncing panties. He smirked at Rochelle for a moment, but Aleck's words swiftly dragged him back from fun snark land to uncomfortable reality. He almost moved to touch the other young man's shoulder when his eyes flickered away like that, but only almost; probably wouldn't be appreciated, and in any case there were people all over the place now. Instead he just muttered; "Sure, no problem." He could easily lift the healer by himself but shifting him using a stretcher was no doubt safer and all that, and he really didn't want to be responsible for damaging the man any further.

He more or less ignored Bereck's mumbling, but the last comment when Aleck returned did get a slight raise of the eyebrows. Get lost? Really? Shaking his head slightly he moved into position at the healer's shoulders.... Wherwrestler? Had that been directed at him? Probably not the time to ask. "You ready then Rochelle?" he looked at the curvy woman "Healers?" the pair of girls "Shift him on three?"

Aleck gave Rochelle a wan, tired smile from where he knelt on the floor. "Kind of hard to forget." Then he paused, gaze dropping away as Bereck cautioned a young child from turns past. "I'm not going anywhere, Dad," he said quietly, keeping his hands and eyes focused on laying out the stretcher before he rose and backed away. "I'm staying right here with you." He didn't look at the faces of anyone as they lifted Bereck, fading into the background while the healer was transferred to the new bed.

[Rochelle]

Situation aside, Rochelle still smiled - brightly, at that. "And you still say the sweetest things." Her hands slid down to Berecks knees, lips pursed hard in concentration now. Blowtorches, she could lift. Heavy-a** pieces of glass? Delicate baubles? Of course, easy as pie. But this was Bereck.

She kind of respected the old guy.

"On three, Carltis. And one..."

(Posting from phone
Sorry for being short)
"Yeah. I'll check it after I'm done with Berath." She didn't add much more to the conversation, instead she just listened and tried to remember her lessons. All healers were trained in basic human aid but this was far beyond that point even if she hadn't branched off to study beast healing instead. Cai wouldn't admit it but she feared she wouldn't be able to do much for the Master. She slid her hands beneath Bereck and braced herself to lift.

Becka could have facepalmed herself "a stretcher.... i should have thought of that, Bereck would have had my hide for forgetting something like that" she muttered to herself. She nodded, glad that Aleck was telling her what to do. Her gut wrenched at the slurred voice of Bereck, she hoped that he'd start to improve soon though, even mumbled talking was better than complete unconciousness.

Becka nodded to Carltis when he said 'lift on three' and waited for the others to be ready. She felt so bad for Aleck, she knew how she felt and Bereck was only her master, not her father, so Aleck must be feeling so much worse. When they had moved Bereck, she'd check on his stitches and bandages where she could. The one on his back definitely needed to be changed.
PostPosted: Thu Jul 12, 2012 12:22 pm

[Carltis]

On 'three' Carltis lifted carefully and moved with the others to set the healer down on the stretcher, trying to just focus on the physical task and to ignore the injured man's quiet hiss of pain. Once he was on the stretcher it was easy enough to get him up onto a clean bed at least; thank whatever for small mercies.... Actually no, he wasn't feeling thankful for damn well anything at the moment; matters could be worse, but that didn't mean their current situation wasn't utterly s**t.

With the stretcher set down on the bed Carltis turned to the pair of healers. "Should leave the canvas on there until you two have done anything you need to do to him; no damn point getting blood on the clean sheets." Opinion stated he glanced over at Aleck, and wondered if there was anything he could say to make him feel better. After only a moment's thought he decided there probably wasn't; he couldn't exactly promise that everything was going to be sunshine and rainbows. For all he knew any second now a large force of revolutionists would break the door down and slaughter the lot of them, and wouldn't that just be a bloody perfect ending to a bloody wonderful day?

*************

[Bereck]

"Damn right I would," Bereck muttered in reply to Becka, "just ask Bant what I did t'him when-" pause, a few breaths, "-he confused th'numbweed with... with th'borage. Stupid boy."

Just as he had been warned it did hurt when he was moved, but though he was not focused enough to be totally sure of where - or when - he was, Bereck was very much himself enough to want to be stoic about it. Clenching his jaw and squeezing his eyes shut he managed to avoid crying out, but he couldn't help a hiss of pain as he took in a sharp breath. It eased off somewhat when he was set down again, but he kept his eyes shut as he was shifted again - less painfully this time - and put down on another bed. After a few moments however he opened his eyes again and peered around for Aleck; he had said he was staying here, and he trusted that.

That's right; she could smile like that.

Against the backdrop of blood the expression felt oddly discordant, and the smile for a pretty friend he hadn't seen in several turns refused to appear as he lifted his gaze. She was already counting to three, though, and Aleck focused on the scuffed tips of his boots again, hearing the little hiss of pain as the healer was shifted.

He realized he was biting the inside of his cheek.

It was.. odd. Humans, if you thought about it, were just a sort of complicated thinking machinery, propelled by rather squishy pulleys and gears- all right, the metaphor was breaking down. The point was that he'd never had issue with bodies or injuries before, but now the remembered red and pink-slicked white twisted in his gut and he couldn't look, because the sight was wrong, and that was not how his father was supposed to be. He heard Carltis say something practical, about blood and clean sheets, and now they'd be changing his bandages again and think rationally, boy, and use your head; you had it just a moment ago.

He owed them. He owed all of them.

He heard them set the stretcher down. Bereck needed him.

Aleck made himself approach the new bed, coming within range of searching eyes, and found himself smiling at the familiar face with its familiar frown lines while his mind quietly blocked out the damaged body below. The bright red hair was messy; he reached in between the healers and smoothed it back, righting a little piece of the universe.
